In Hainan, whether on the streets or in the countryside, you can see the coconut trees everywhere. More than 2, 000 years of planting history has inspired people’s imagination to use coconuts and left them with traditional coconut carving(椰雕) crafts. On July 23, 2007,
Hainan coconut carving was included in the second batch of Hainan Provincial intangible cultural heritage list. With a history of over 1,000 years, coconut carving is a treasured heritage in Wenchang city, Hainan Province.
Zhang Bidi was a 54-year-old coconut carving artist. He set up a big market for small coconut carvings. Zhang has developed a deep love for coconut carving since his childhood. In 1991, after graduating from high school, Zhang went to Shenzhen and worked in a company. He has made gamepads there for years. In 2010, an idea
suddenly popped into his head. From nowhere, he was thinking of making blue-tooth loudspeakers out of coconuts. Zhang believed that the loudspeakers would be popular, and he continued to dig into the industry. It turned out to be the best idea ever.
In 2015, Zhang returned to his hometown with his wife. Then he started a coconut carving company. However, few people knew about coconut carving and the industry scale(产业规模) was small. To solve the problem, he decided to add modern designs(设计) to traditional coconut carvings to keep the skill alive. Zhang set up a carving workshop in 2018. He taught young people
coconut carving skills and designs. His company provided jobs for students and helped farmers make money. More than 300 different kinds of carved coconut products were produced, such as tableware, tea sets, ornaments and so on.

Beijing Opera is the most representative(具有代表性的) of all Chinese traditional dramatic(戏剧的) art forms. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other dramatic forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”. It is a dramatic art including music, performance, literature, and face painting.
Dramatic forms in many other countries do not present singing, dancing and spoken parts in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage. There are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play. In a dance drama, the dancer has no speaking role and does not sing either. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, includes spoken parts, singing, dancing and wushu.
In addition to its presence in China, Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all time, was the first person to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will be puzzled all the way through and a little bored from time to time, but you will be interested. You will be strongly engaged by Beijing Opera even if you know nothing about the dramatic background. ” This is how one American traveller described his first experience of watching Beijing Opera.
