Malta Though English is still widely spoken as one of Malta’s official languages — set during 150 years of British rule, which also left behind left-hand driving — calls for revival saw Maltese become the official language again in 1934. There’s hardly a time of year when the Maltese aren’t celebrating something, but modern history lovers should head out for 21 September, which marks Malta’s Independence Day. The island nation’s sovereignty (主权) was hard-fought for and finally won in 1964. Crete, Greece The Minoans — a Cretan people widely credited as Europe’s first recorded civilisation — are believed to have brought olive oil production to Europe around 4,500 years ago. See for yourself on a cookery experience with Minoan Tastes, where you’ll wolf down the food inspired by old recipes. If you’re hungry for more history, head for the Olive Tree Museum in Vouves, which dives into the history of the industry. Sardinia, Italy The Giants of Mont’e Prama — 15 large sandstone heads said to be 3,000 years old — were unearthed in 1974 by two farmers who worked in the field. Their age connects them to the island’s mysterious (神秘的) Nuragic civilisation. See the figures at Cagliari’s National Archaeological Museum. Within the same museum lie other important finds, which help to paint a picture of the civilisation’s livelihoods. Isle of Skye, Scotland It’d be a surprise that a lyre said to be about 4,000 years old was found on Scotland’s Isle of Skye in 2012. The discovery tugged (拨动) on the heartstrings of islanders whose past has been underpinned by a love of traditional folk music, often featuring stringed instruments. The islanders host many live music events every year. See a variety of acts at Skye Live, the island’s annual music festival with hours of traditional Scottish songs. 1. When did Malta become independent? A. In 1814. B. In 1934. C. In 1964. D. In 1974. 2. Who discovered the ancient stone figures in Sardinia? A. Painters. B. Local farmers. C. Tourists. D. Museum workers. 3. Which might attract music lovers? A. Isle of Skye. B. Sardinia. C. Crete. D. Malta. B It wasn’t until Yash Gupta broke his glasses in taekwondo practice that he realized just how much he depended on them. He had to wait a week to get a new pair. “I couldn’t see clearly in the classroom,” said Gupta, now 17. However, Gupta’s eyes were opened to a much larger problem. He saw on the Internet that more than 12 million children worldwide don’t have the corrective eyewear they need. “It’s just a total disadvantage for them, because if you can’t see anything, you definitely can’t make the most of the education you’re being given,” Gupta said. “It would be impossible for them to fully achieve their potential (潜力). I had this problem for one week, but these kids have these problems for their whole lives.” So at just 14, Gupta started Sight Learning, an organization that collects used eyeglasses from optometrists (验光师) and donates them to organizations that can deliver them to children in need. For Gupta, who has worn glasses since he was 5 years old, the idea of repurposing old eyewear made sense. Most of his family members wear glasses, and just searching his own home yielded positive results. “I found 10 to 15 pairs just lying around the house in the drawers,” Gupta said. With the help from his father, Gupta approached local optometrists, who agreed to put out drop boxes where patients could donate their used eyeglasses after getting a new pair. Since 2011, Gupta has donated 9,500 pairs of glasses, worth nearly $500,000, to young people in Haiti, Honduras, India and Mexico. Gupta knows that the glasses he’s providing can make a big impact. “A lot of times, these families are in poverty (贫困),” he said. “With a good education, they can get a good job. Right now, we partner with international organizations. I’d like to bring this service to more countries.” 4. What led Gupta to start Sight Learning? A. A local organization. B. His failure in a test. C. A nearsighted student. D. His broken glasses. 5. Which is closest in meaning to “yielded” in paragraph 5? A. Reduced. B. Missed. C. Produced. D. Reused. 6. What does Gupta plan to do in the coming days? A. Benefit more children in need. B. Donate money to poor families. C. Create jobs in his home country. D. Sell new glasses at a lower price. 7. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Turn Weaknesses into Strengths B. Help Children See Clearly C. Bring Kindness to the Classroom D. Protect Eyesight Properly C Hummingbirds have long held a deep attraction among the public, whether being observed flying at amazing speed around bird feeders or admired as symbols of love and peace. On a practical level, hummingbirds eat hundreds of flying insects each day, and provide pollination (授粉) for reproduction of flowers and plants. However, this important bird species is dropping in number worldwide. Holly Ernest, a University of Wyoming researcher, tried to find out the reasons as well as possible ways to protect hummingbirds in the future. Hummingbirds are a group of birds with the second-highest number of species worldwide, ranking only behind flycatchers. Most species are found in South America and Central America. Now 191 hummingbird species are put on the red list of threatened species for falling population trends and 71 other hummingbird species with “unknown” trends as of July 2023, according to Ernest’s paper. Two Caribbean hummingbird species are listed as extinct, and other species likely are never identified to written science before their extinction, the paper says. Despite several hummingbird species seen at feeders in North America during the summer, a wide range of threats has caused many hummingbird populations to drop, including climate change, wildfires, habitat pollution and loss. “Climate change affects them in a number of ways that we know about and probably many more that we don’t,” Ernest says. “One example is a mismatch of migration (迁徙) timing with plant flowering that hummingbirds depend on. Some hummingbird species are generalists in that they get nectar (花蜜) from all flowers, but many are specialists, even to one or a few species of flowering plants. If those plants disappear, so do the hummingbirds. Air, land and water pollution is a problem in many ways, including the intersecting threat of large wildfires.” However, there are some methods that can be useful in leading the best direction for the future protection of hummingbirds, the paper says. 8. Why do people admire hummingbirds according to the text? A. They carry good wishes. B. They can be raised easily. C. They move in a funny way. D. They draw flying insects. 9 What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about hummingbirds? A. Their migration journey. B. Their rising population. C. Their main food source. D. Their tough situation. 10. Which of the following are key to hummingbirds’ survival? A. Hilly lands. B. Flowering plants. C. Dead leaves. D. High temperatures. 11. What might the author continue talking about? A. Approaches to finding directions. B. Tips on where to watch hummingbirds. C. Possible ways to save hummingbirds. D. The purpose of the study led by Ernest. D California’s beaches are world-famous. But new research indicates many could disappear by the century’s end due to erosion (侵蚀) from sea level rise. “The shoreline is probably going to move landward about 30 meters or more for every meter of sea level rise,” says Sean Vitousek, lead author of the report. “When you get into three meters of sea level rise, you’re talking almost 300 feet of erosion.” Using nearly four decades of satellite images and computer models, the researchers say 25 to 75 percent of California’s beaches may become completely eroded by 2100. So how much sea level rise will the state get in the coming decades? Anywhere from two to 10 feet, depending on two major factors. One is ocean warming, which causes the water to rise. Another is the melting (融化) of land ice. “The ice in Greenland holds about seven meters of sea level and the ice in Antarctica holds about 70 meters of sea level. So the big uncertainty is really understanding what the global temperature is going to be like and how much of that ice melts,” Vitousek says. The findings will help state and local officials plan for the future and look for ways to protect coastal communities, roads and railroad tracks. Vitousek thinks a lot about possible solutions for problems like erosion. He says the most successful long-term solutions will likely be ones that work with nature. Some short-term solutions, such as trucking in more sand, can be expensive. A medium-term solution is building barrier islands off the coast to weaken and slow incoming waves. They will also provide habitat for wildlife but require maintenance (维护). The best long-term solution is to fight climate change. “The ocean is going to do what the ocean is going to do and we can stop it to a certain degree. But we’re nowhere near as powerful as the ocean, so we’re under its cover,” says Vitousek. 12. What mainly accounts for the possible erosion of California’s beaches? A. Sea level rise. B. An overcrowded city. C. Water pollution. D. The growth of tourism. 13. How is the second paragraph developed? A. By showing differences. B. By listing figures. C. By following time order. D. By giving examples. 14. What can we know about the findings of the study? A. They have been put into practice. B. They make little sense for the locals. C. They definitely stop land ice melting. D. They push the authorities to takes steps. 15. Which statement will Vitousek probably agree with? A. It is an easy job to fight climate change. B. Trucking in more sand is the first choice. C. Humans should live with nature in peace. D. Cutting the cost of maintenance is a must. At some point in most people’s fitness journeys, they hit a plateau(停滞期) — it seems difficult to move forward. ___16___. In fact, the key to progress in your works is more likely doing less. Below, I’ve outlined some strategies to help you jump-start your progress in working out. Put recovery first Overtraining makes it difficult for you to make progress because you are continually breaking down muscle (肌肉) without allowing time to recover and rebuild. Although quality sleep contributes much to recovery, it isn’t the only factor. ___17___. They help your muscle recover on time. When you’re finished, drink water and cool down. Finally, give your body the energy it needs to rebuild with a balanced diet. Mix up your training One of the most common reasons for hitting a plateau is sticking with the same workout for too long. Your body naturally adapts to repetitive movements, leading to few returns. ___18___. Cross-training involves a variety of activities and exercises intended for different muscle groups. It’s like giving your body a wake-up call, leading it to progress. ___19___ When you’ve exercised for some time it can be easy to lose sight of how far you’ve come. Monitoring your exercise activity with a smartphone app or a fitness journal can help you recognize markers of your progress. Tracking a variety of measurable markers, such as weights lifted and distances you walked, will enable you to focus on the smaller yet significant goals that make progress more visible. Remember, hitting a fitness plateau doesn’t mean you aren’t doing enough; it’s a natural part of the journey. ___20___. A. Track your progress B. Make exercise part of your daily business C. You can take longer breaks during your workouts D. Pushing harder is not the answer when you reach the point E. Celebrate your achievements no matter how small they seem F. Parents are not to ride with children on the bus, and not allowed to come to the school, whether to drop off their children or to take pictures. Parking is tight(有限的), even for teachers. And additional cars are strictly forbidden(禁止) at the beginning or end of the school day.” That was all understandable but they didn’t know my five-year-old twins. Shy and sensitive, they hid whenever the doorbell rang. They couldn’t walk out of their hiding places with ice cream, candy or new toys. Their paternal grandparents could hardly get a good look at them. They clung to(依恋) me whenever we went out in public—one girl per leg. My fear on that first day of school was that my girls would hide under a bus seat, or somehow get lost. The day came, and it was sunny and beautiful. The girls were lovely in their new dresses. The bus was late, and they were nervous, but they smiled for the camera. I stood near the bus stop for a minute, and their father finally took his eye off the camera lens and took in what I was wearing. “Oh, no, you’re not,” he said. I wore my gym clothes and favorite long-distance running shoes. The school was a few miles away. “I am going to run to the school, if that’s what you’re thinking,” I said. Our conversation was cut short when the bus approached. I watched Morgan and Chloe get on, turn and wave on the top step, and then... OK, then I ran before the bus, so I wasn’t lying to my husband. I took a short cut and reached the school earlier. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My face didn’t light up until the last bus was coming. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023~2024学年高一期中质量检测卷 英语 考生注意: 1. 1.What did the man do last night? The discovery tugged (拨动) on the heartstrings of islanders whose past has been underpinned by a love of traditional folk music, often featuring stringed instruments. The islanders host many live music events every year. See a variety of acts at Skye Live, the island’s annual music festival with hours of traditional Scottish songs.(2012年,在苏格兰的斯凯岛发现了一把据说有4000年历史的七弦琴,这让人感到惊讶。 故选A项。 B It wasn’t until Yash Gupta broke his glasses in taekwondo practice that he realized just how much he depended on them. Protect Eyesight Properly 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. 9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about hummingbirds? A. Their migration journey. B. Their rising population. C. Their main food source. D. Their tough situation. 10. Which of the following are key to hummingbirds’ survival? A. Hilly lands. B. Flowering plants. C. Dead leaves. D. High temperatures. 11. What might the author continue talking about? A. Approaches to finding directions. B. Tips on where to watch hummingbirds. C. Possible ways to save hummingbirds. D. The purpose of the study led by Ernest. A 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Hummingbirds have long held a deep attraction among the public, whether being observed flying at amazing speed around bird feeders or admired as symbols of love and peace.( 蜂鸟长久以来一直深受公众喜爱,不论是在鸟食盆周围以惊人速度飞行被公众观察,还是被人们赞赏为爱与和平的象征,都说明了这一点)”可知,人们赞赏蜂鸟,因为它们是爱与和平的象征,承载着人们美好的愿望。故选A项。 根据第三段“Now 191 hummingbird species are put on the red list of threatened species for falling population trends and 71 other hummingbird species with “unknown” trends as of July 2023, according to Ernest’s paper. Two Caribbean hummingbird species are listed as extinct, and other species likely are never identified to written science before their extinction, the paper says.( 目前有191种蜂鸟物种因种群下降趋势被列入濒危物种红色名录,还有71种蜂鸟物种的趋势被归为“未知”,数据来自Ernest的论文。 根据倒数第二段 “One example is a mismatch of migration(迁徙) timing with plant flowering that hummingbirds depend on.( 一个例子是迁徙时间与植物开花时间不匹配,开花植物是蜂鸟所依赖的) ”可知,开花植物对蜂鸟的生存至关重要。 根据最后一段“However, there are some methods that can be useful in leading the best direction for the future protection of hummingbirds, the paper says.(然而,论文指出,有一些方法可以在指导未来保护蜂鸟的最佳方向上发挥作用)”可知,作者有可能继续谈论可能的保护蜂鸟的方法。故选C项。 D California’s beaches are world-famous. 12. A 13. B 14. D 15. ___19___ When you’ve exercised for some time, it can be easy to lose sight of how far you’ve come. That’s why cross-training is important for overall fitness success G. Using the strategies above, you’ll get back on the road to your fitness goals 【答案】16. D 17. C 18. F 19. A 20. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I took a short cut and reached the school earlier. There were several cars in the parking lot of the school. I noticed a large car near the school gate. So I made my way to it and hid safely behind it, where I had a good view of every child that got out of the bus and walked into the school gate. As each bus emptied, it would drive away, and the next bus would stop in front of the school. I held my breath and tried not to miss anything. My face didn't light up until the last bus was coming. Now my face was running with sweat mixed with the sunblock I had thoughtfully applied hours before. A few minutes went by. And then there they were! Chloe smiled shyly as the principal gave her a big smile and "Welcome!" Morgan stayed tightly behind smiling and holding her sister's hand. I said it was the sweat and the sunblock that made me tear up. 词汇激活 行为类 停止:stop /pause 给:give /offer 微笑:smile/beam 驶离:drive away/bear off 情绪类 害羞地:shyly / coyly 深思地:thoughtfully/ pensively 【点睛】[高分句型1] As each bus emptied, it would drive away, and the next bus would stop in front of the school.
