In his spare  time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.” Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage. “A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained. Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner. But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.” Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage. “My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.” 4. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner? A. Read music. B. Play the piano. C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments. 5. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage? A. Boring. B. Well-paid. C. Demanding. D. Dangerous. 6. What does Titterton need to practise? A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”. C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style. 7. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”? A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience. C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job. C I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library. My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old .It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time. As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them. I always read ,using different voices ,as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it !It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books . Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation. As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and 1 think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can. 8. Which word best describes the author’s relationship with books as a child? A. Cooperative. B. Uneasy. C. Inseparable. D. Casual. 9. What does the underlined phrase “an added meaning” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Pleasure from working in the library. B. Joy of reading passed on in the family. C. Wonderment from acting out the stories. D. A closer bond developed with the readers. 10. What does the author call on other writers to do? A. Sponsor book fairs. B. Write for social media. C. Support libraries. D. Purchase her novels. 11. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Reading: A Source of Knowledge B. My Idea about writing C. Library: A Haven for the Young D. My Love of the Library D Allison Guallpa concentrates on following the video directions for an unusual painting at home — the eighth-grader must draw a face using fruits or vegetables. She chooses peaches for rosy cheeks and a banana for the mouth. That’s just one project Guallpa and other children are participating in during a 10-week, free, virtual art education series led by Marie Saint-Cyr, owner of Saint-Cyr Art Studio. Other challenges have included drawing a black-and-white still life of bottles, creating a watercolor landscape (风景) and copying works of artists like Van Gogh. Saint-Cyr began the program during the summer of 2020 to give children an opportunity to express themselves and their feelings during dramatic changes in their lives because of COVID-19. Saint-Cyr 25, moved to Long Island at 8. The programs she attended after her arrival were free and influenced her so much that she wanted to create something alike for the next generation. Parents first contact Saint-Cyr through her website, Saintcyrartstudio.com. Saint-Cyr works with program supporters who pay her and provide the supplies for the children, which parents can pick up or have delivered. Saint-Cyr then provides 30-minute videos through Google Classroom that walk students through creating their artwork projects. At 4 p.m. meetups Mondays through Thursdays, whoever can make it attends a Zoom meeting where children show off their works in progress, give each other feedback (反馈) and ask questions. They also do 5-to 10-minute small exercises to improve their skills. It might be “Find an object and draw it without lifting the pencil off the paper”. At the conclusion of the series, Saint-Cyr displays students’ work in the “walk-through” virtual gallery online. It looks as if viewers are really walking through a museum display with all the kids’ professional artwork hanging on the walls. Instead of being bored the students participating in the program have got something to do — create things, see all the students’ works and get ideas. Saint-Cyr is considering bringing the program to nearby schools as an optional after-school activity. 12. How does Guallpa learn to create the unusual painting? A. Through TV programs. B. Through picture books. C. Through school courses. D. Through video instructions. 13. Why did Saint-Cyr start the program? A. To strengthen teacher-student relationship. B. To help kids express emotions artistically. C. To provide parents with painting supplies. D. To sharpen kids’ organizational skills. 14. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about? A. How the art program works. B. How parents react to the art program. C. What kids do at the regular meetings. D. What viewers think of kids’ creations. 15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the program? A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Opposed. Should We Create More National Parks? Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of extinction? ___16___ And I think the best way to do this for governments is to create more national parks. ___17___ If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down for making money-many animals are unable to survive. and more species are likely to become extinct. ___18___ A major reason why many species are endangered is that the animals are killed by hunters. They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks. All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks, because these parks allow animals to live in a safe environment. ___20___ A. I personally believe that we must save these animals. B. To begin with, animals are important to our humans. C. National parks protect the animals’ natural environment. D. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up. One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meeting, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meeting tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.” The next day we arrived at the swim meeting late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I should be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she expected me to take part. As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were all here to do just one thing — beat me. All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head, “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself. The match began! I swam harder than I had ever swum before. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力:1—5 A C A C A 6—10 B C B C A 11—15 B C B B A 16—20 C B A C B 1. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段“I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.(我不是受过训练的音乐家,但我学会了识谱,这样我就可以在Maria的表演中帮助她)”可知,因为Titterton识谱,所以可以在Maria的钢琴表演中为她翻页。故选A项。 根据第三段“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.(这项工作需要很多技能。你必须确保你不会一次翻两页并且必要的时候确保你回到前面找到音乐重复的部分)”可知,为钢琴家翻页这项工作很需要技巧,所以Titterton的工作要求是很高的。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.(无声的舞台交流是关键,每个钢琴家都有自己的“点头”风格来表示翻页,他们需要和翻页者进行练习)”可知,Titterton需要练习识别钢琴演奏者的“点头”示意来翻页。 根据最后一段“He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’(他对音乐很感兴趣,感受着每一个音符,所以我不得不说:“翻页,翻页!”)” C I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. B. Support libraries. D. Purchase her novels. 11. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Reading: A Source of Knowledge B. My Idea about writing C. Library: A Haven for the Young D. Saint-Cyr, 25, moved to Long Island at 8. A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Opposed. 12. D 13. B 14. A 15. After the first turn, I was surprised to find that I had a half-body length lead over other girls. However, they soon sped up and narrowed the gap. Halfway through the race, the girl to my left almost drew level with me, while I already began to feel tired. At that moment, the powerful words of my grandma echoed again in my ears, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” I waved my arms and legs to keep swimming and used every last bit of strength to swim the last 50 meters. As soon as I touched the wall, I looked the screen, waiting anxiously for the result. It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I saw my time in the screen but could hardly believe it - mine was at the top of the list! My coach ran to me and hugged me tightly when I got out of the water. Narrow victory as it was, I did win my first real trophy that day. Everything felt like a dream as I stood on the winner's podium, weeping tears of joy. Back at home, I delightedly replaced the “Honorable Mention” on my shelf with the new trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.” 加速:speed up/ accelerate ②.拥抱:hug/hold in one’s arms ③.代替:replace/take place of 情绪类 ①.
