I called my brother, Larry. “I have good news, and I have bad,” I said. “Which do you want to hear first?”
“Good news first.”
“You can go to sleep early tonight.”
“Okay. What’s the bad?” he inquired.
“We’re going to the opera!”
The joke was, the last time I made him go, he fell asleep. Even I had to admit it was a boring production. But when someone gave us tickets to the all-time favourite Carmen, I really thought he might enjoy it. When he nodded off again, I let him sleep. I only woke him when his snoring (打鼾) became louder than the performance.
Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as, well, opera and hockey (冰球). I love the arts, and he’s a huge sports fan. His big passion is NHL hockey. He’s shared season tickets with his friends for years. I must admit there have been times I’ve been tempted (诱惑) to sell my ticket online. Tempted, but I’d never do that. Instead, if he wanted to go, we went. I would complain, “Oh, not again!”
When the game started, my phone would be on my lap. Most of the time, I’d be texting or daydreaming. Sometimes, my texting would be interrupted when the home team scored. I knew they scored because everyone jumped up and exchanged high-fives and fist bumps.
As I looked around at thousands of people cheering and getting increasingly excited, I decided to at least give it a try—for my brother’s sake, if not for my own.
It took a few games, but soon I was hooked. When the other team scored, I eventually felt a bit disappointment with the rest of my crowd.
My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! I didn’t keep glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until we got out. Time flew. The game was over before I knew it.
4. Which best describes Larry’s attitude towards opera?
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Casual. D. Objective.
5. What do we know about the author?
A. She had a passion for sports. B. She had prejudice against sport fans.
C. She decided to enjoy opera. D. She developed an interest in hockey.
6. What does the underlined word “hooked” in Paragraph 10 mean?
A. Touched. B. Addicted. C. Annoyed. D. Confused.
7. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. From Opera to Hockey B. The Power of Sports
C. A Beautiful Encounter D. A Passion for Sports
C
A role shift—whether a promotion, a move to a new organization, or a fresh challenge in your existing job—can be a huge boost to your career and a chance for you to succeed. You know the drill heading in: Apply your experience and talents to the position, make sure you are accepted by the hierarchy (高层), and get a few big wins in the first couple of months to demonstrate what you can do.
But in today’s hyper-collaborative and dynamic workplaces, successful moves aren’t as easy as they once were, even for the most qualified and hard-working people. Too often, transitional managers and employees don’t live up to their organizations’ expectations. Gartner surveys indicate that a full 49% of people promoted within their own companies are underperforming up to 18 months after those moves, and McKinsey reports that 27% to 46% of transitional executives are regarded as failures or disappointments two years later. They have the right skills and experience. They understand the company’s goals. So why didn’t they quickly excel in their new roles?
We analyzed employee relationships and communication patterns across more than 100 diverse companies and interviewed 160 executives in 20 of them. Our research points to one overlooked prerequisite (先决条件) for transition success: the effective use of internal networks. The people who are the most productive, innovative, and engaged in new roles — the “fast movers” — are those who establish extremely broad, mutually beneficial, uplifting connections from the start. Specifically, they surge rapidly into a broad network; identify how they add value, where they fall short, and who can fill the gaps; create scale; and shape their networks for maximum thriving.
In most cases, individual managers must do these things on their own. Only 43% of people surveyed said their organizations ensured that transitional employees were offered guidance and support. Only about a quarter said their employers encouraged them to build connections early or create networks to address skill gaps. But that should not be the case.
8. What does the author say about job moves in today’s society?
A. They are a boost to our career. B. They require ability demonstration.
C. They may not produce good results. D. They need to be guided by managers.
9. Why didn’t transitional executives succeed in their new roles?
A. They are inexperienced. B. They lack the needed skills.
C. They misunderstand the company’s goals. D. They fail to use internal networks effectively.
10. How does the author make his points convincing?
A. By using exact numbers. B. By conducting surveys.
C. By making contrasts. D. By listing examples.
11. What does the author think of the phenomenon in the last paragraph?
A. It’s common. B. It’s unexpected.
C. It’s acceptable. D. It’s unsurprising.
D
Wildlife conservation is the practice of protecting plant and animal species and their habitats. As part of the world’s ecosystems, wildlife provides balance and stability to nature’s processes. The goal of wildlife conservation is to ensure the survival of these species, and to educate people on living sustainably with other species.
The human population has grown exponentially (呈指数地) over the past 200 years, to more than seven billion people today, and it continues to rapidly grow. This means natural resources are being consumed faster than ever by the billions of people on the planet. This growth and development also endangers the habitats and existence of various types of wildlife around the world, particularly animals and plants that may be displaced for land development, or used for food or other human purposes. Other threats to wildlife include the introduction of invasive species from other parts of the world, climate change, pollution, hunting, fishing, and poaching (偷猎).
International organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the United Nations work to support global animal and habitat conservation efforts on many different fronts. They work with the government to establish and protect public lands, like national parks and wildlife refuges They help write legislation (立法), such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 in the United States, to protect various species. They work with law enforcement to prosecute (检举) wildlife crimes, like wildlife trafficking and poaching. They also promote biodiversity to support the growing human population while preserving existing species and habitats.
National Geographic Explorers, like conservation biologists Camille Coudrat and Titus Adhola, are working to slow the extinction of global species and to protect global biodiversity and habitats. Environmental filmmakers and photographers, like Thomas P. Peschak, are essential to conservation efforts as well, documenting and bringing attention to endangered wildlife all over the world.
12. Which is a goal of wildlife conservation?
A. To limit population growth. B. To manage natural resources.
C. To promote land development. D. To encourage harmonious coexistence.
13. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Rapid population growth. B. Resource consumption.
C. Wildlife conservation. D. Climate change.
14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The role of international organizations. B. The importance of biodiversity promotion.
C. The activities of conservation organizations. D. The impact of wildlife crimes on ecosystems.
15. Why are some figures mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To emphasize the importance of law enforcement.
B. To show the achievements of wildlife conservation.
C. To provide statistics on wildlife conservation efforts.
D. To recognize the contributions of certain individuals.
If you live in a city that gets lots of snow and ice, then you might be familiar with road salt. Your local government likely has several ice-removing trucks that spread road salt on the roads to get rid of ice. ___16___
To figure that out, you first need to know what road salt is. Road salt is simply rock salt, which is table salt in its natural form. Table salt goes through a very long purification (净化) process. ___17___ As a result, rock salt isn’t pure — besides salt, it contains some minerals like lead, iron, etc. And for this reason, rock salt doesn’t look that bright.
Now, let’s look at why road salt can remove ice on roads. Ice forms when the temperature of water reaches 0℃. The freezing point of the water is lowered once salt is added. ___18___ A 10 per cent salt solution (溶液) freezes at -6℃, and a 20 per cent solution freezes at much lower degrees.
However, rock salt has its limitations. For instance, if the temperature of the roadway is too low, the salt won’t have any effect on the ice. ___19___ As we mentioned earlier, rock salt can contain lead, iron, etc. When rock salt is spread, these minerals are also spread, harming soil and underground water.
___20___ That’s because there are many salt mines around the world, which makes rock salt relatively affordable and accessible. Additionally, rock salt can be stored easily and for very long periods without losing its ability to remove ice.
A. But rock salt does not.
B. Then how exactly does it work?
C. The long purification process is costly.
D. In such cases, cities will use sand instead.
E. So the salt makes it harder for the water to freeze.
F. Rock salt also has major environmental problems.
G. Even so, rock salt is still widely used to remove ice.

As an old saying goes we make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give.
I truly believe that a job is definitely not a job if you love what you are doing. Many years ago, I worked in an employment and insurance office, which helps people find jobs, apply for employment and insurance, and return to school for training. What could be more rewarding than to help someone find a job or change their career?
I have always said that people are at their worst when they are unemployed or sick. I must admit that some days were challenging. But I have one amazing story that I would like to share.
One day a lady came to the office with a dream to become a registered nurse. According to my client, her family did not approve. She was a mother with young children, and her husband had returned to school for training. It was not economically practical for her to return to school.
It was clear that this lady had a passion for the nursing profession, so I encouraged her to realize her dream. I equipped her with the information necessary to apply for nursing school, and she left the office. She went on her way, and I never knew whether she followed her dream or not.
Many years later, I was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer of the stomach and was admitted to the hospital for an operation. I must admit I was scared. My mother had died of cancer at age forty. I had a husband and two beautiful children. I was only forty-eight years old. The surgery was successful. It was, however, very painful. Days flew smoothly as I recovered from the pain.
注意:
But one night the pain began growing stronger.

C 5. D 6. B 7. A

由文章第六段中“But when someone gave us tickets to the all-time favourite Carmen, I really thought he might enjoy it. When he nodded off again, I let him sleep. I only woke him when his snoring (打鼾) became louder than the performance. (但当有人给我们最受欢迎的《卡门》的票时,我真的以为他会喜欢。他又睡着了,我就让他睡了。我只是在他的鼾声比演出还响的时候叫醒了他。)”可知,他对歌剧的态度是较为随意的。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。由文章倒数第三段“As I looked around at thousands of people cheering and getting increasingly excited, I decided to at least give it a try—for my brother’s sake, if not for my own. (当我看到周围成千上万的人在欢呼,越来越兴奋时,我决定至少试一试——为了我哥哥,如果不是为了我自己。)”以及最后一段“My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! I didn’t keep glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until we got out. Time flew. The game was over before I knew it. (我哥哥看到我参与进来很惊讶。我自己也惊呆了!我没有一直看钟,数着时间,直到我们出来。时间飞。我还没反应过来,游戏就结束了。)”可知,作者决定至少为了她哥哥试着去欣赏曲棍球比赛,她开始对曲棍球感兴趣,时间飞逝,比赛结束时她还没意识到。这说明作者对曲棍球产生了兴趣。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。由倒数第二段中“When the other team scored, I eventually felt a bit disappointment with the rest of my crowd. (当对方球队进球时,我和其他人一样,也感到有点失望。)”和最后一段“My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! I didn’t keep glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until we got out. Time flew. The game was over before I knew it. (我哥哥看到我参与进来很惊讶。我自己也惊呆了!我没有一直看钟,数着时间,直到我们出来。时间飞。我还没反应过来,游戏就结束了。)”可知,几场比赛后,作者很快就迷上了。因此带下划线的单词hooked的意思是“上瘾的,着迷的”。A.
通读全文,尤其是由文章第七段中“Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as, well, opera and hockey (冰球). I love the arts, and he’s a huge sports fan. (拉里和我的基本价值观一直是一致的,但我们的兴趣爱好相差甚远,就像歌剧和冰球一样。我热爱艺术,而他是个超级体育迷。)”以及文章最后一段“My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! I didn’t keep glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until we got out. Time flew. The game was over before I knew it. (我哥哥看到我参与进来很惊讶。我自己也惊呆了!我没有一直看钟,数着时间,直到我们出来。时间飞。我还没反应过来,游戏就结束了。)”可知,本文讲述了作者从喜欢戏剧到喜欢篮球的经历。说明了作者的转变,可知,选项A“From Opera to Hockey (从歌剧到篮球)”。故选A。

But in today’s hyper-collaborative and dynamic workplaces successful moves aren’t as easy as they once were, even for the most qualified and hard-working people.
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

根据第二段“But in today’s hyper-collaborative and dynamic workplaces, successful moves aren’t as easy as they once were, even for the most qualified and hard-working people. Too often, transitional managers and employees don’t live up to their organizations’ expectations. Gartner surveys indicate that a full 49% of people promoted within their own companies are underperforming up to 18 months after those moves, and McKinsey reports that 27% to 46% of transitional executives are regarded as failures or disappointments two years later.(但在当今高度协作和动态变化的工作场所中,即使是最有能力和最勤奋的人,成功地进行职位变动也不像过去那样容易了。
根据第三段“We analyzed employee relationships and communication patterns across more than 100 diverse companies and interviewed 160 executives in 20 of them. Our research points to one overlooked prerequisite (先决条件) for transition success: the effective use of internal networks.(我们分析了100多家不同公司的员工关系和交流模式,并对其中20家公司的160名高管进行了采访。我们的研究指出了成功过渡的一个被忽视的前提条件:有效利用内部网络)”可知,成功转型的先决条件是有效利用内部网络,而转型高管没有成功利用内部网络,因此他们在新角色中没有取得成功。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“We analyzed employee relationships and communication patterns across more than 100 diverse companies and interviewed 160 executives in 20 of them. Our research points to one overlooked prerequisite (先决条件) for transition success: the effective use of internal networks.(我们分析了100多家不同公司的员工关系和交流模式,并对其中20家公司的160名高管进行了采访。我们的研究指出了成功过渡的一个被忽视的前提条件:有效利用内部网络)”可知,作者通过进行调查来使他的观点更有说服力。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In most cases, individual managers must do these things on their own. Only 43% of people surveyed said their organizations ensured that transitional employees were offered guidance and support. Only about a quarter said their employers encouraged them to build connections early or create networks to address skill gaps. But that should not be the case.(在大多数情况下,单个管理者必须自己去做这些事情。只有43%的受访者表示,他们的组织确保为过渡期的员工提供指导和支持。只有大约四分之一的人表示,他们的雇主鼓励他们尽早建立联系或创建网络来弥补技能差距。但情况不应该如此)”可知,作者在最后一段中提到“但情况不应该是这样”,这表明作者对于大多数情况下,单个管理者必须自己完成这些事情感到意外,因此可以推断出作者认为这个现象是出人意料的。故B项。
D 13. A 14. A 15. D

B 17. C 18. E 19. D 20. G
由上文“Your local government likely has several ice-removing trucks that spread road salt on the roads to get rid of ice. (你所在的地方政府可能有几辆除冰车,在路上撒融雪盐以清除积冰)”可知,接下来可能会探讨融雪盐如何发挥作用的问题,因此B选项“Then how exactly does it work? (那么它究竟是如何工作的呢?)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选B。
【17题详解】
由上文“To figure that out, you first need to know what road salt is. Road salt is simply rock salt, which is table salt in its natural form. Table salt goes through a very long purification (净化) process. (要弄清楚这一点,你首先需要知道什么是道路盐。道路盐就是简单的岩盐,它是天然形式的食盐。食盐要经过很长的净化过程)”以及下文“As a result, rock salt isn’t pure — besides salt, it contains some minerals like lead, iron, etc. (因此,岩盐并不纯净——除了盐之外,它还含有一些矿物质,如铅、铁等)”可知,此处在对比食盐和岩盐的净化问题,因此C选项“The long purification process is costly (漫长的净化过程代价高昂)”指出了岩盐未经这样的净化过程,导致含有杂质,能承上启下,符合题意。故选C。
【18题详解】
由上文“The freezing point of the water is lowered once salt is added. (一旦加入盐,水的冰点就会降低)”可知,接下来的内容应继续解释这一现象的结果或影响,因此E选项“So the salt makes it harder for the water to freeze. (所以盐使水更难冻结)”说明了加盐后水不易结冰的原因,能承接上文,符合题意。故选E。
【19题详解】
由上文“For instance, if the temperature of the roadway is too low, the salt won’t have any effect on the ice. (例如,如果路面温度太低,盐对冰没有任何作用)”可知,此处提到融雪盐在某些情况下失效的情况,因此D选项“In such cases, cities will use sand instead. (在这种情况下,城市将改用沙子)”提出了这种情况下的一种替代方法,能承接上文,符合题意。故选D。
【20题详解】
由下文“That’s because there are many salt mines around the world, which makes rock salt relatively affordable and accessible. (这是因为世界各地有许多盐矿,使得岩盐相对便宜且容易获取)”可知,这部分内容是在解释为什么尽管岩盐有环境问题但仍被广泛使用的原因,因此G选项“Even so, rock salt is still widely used to remove ice. (即便如此,岩盐仍被广泛用于除冰)”引出了下文的解释,符合题意。故选G。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As an old saying goes, we make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give.
One day, a lady came to the office with a dream to become a registered nurse.
注意:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
But one night the pain began growing stronger. A nurse was sent for special medical help. After that, I felt more relieved. “Thanks to your timely care, I feel much better,” I said gratefully to the nurse. “It is you that I should express my sincere thanks to actually. Remember the struggling mother many years ago?” she asked. Amazed and surprised, I recognized she was the young lady who had been interviewed by me. “How did you make it?” I asked, wondering how she pursued her dream.
“You never know what impact your encouraging words had on me,” the nurse said. She told me that she was determined to achieve her goal following my advice. Having overcome tremendous difficulties in economy and got support from her family, she returned to school for study and eventually fulfilled her dream as a registered nurse. So fantastic was this encounter. How blessed we were to have met each other! What could be more rewarding than to help someone fulfill their dreams. Helping others will benefit yourself as well.
