The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is one of the best books I have read in years. This is a page turner with complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, good and evil, betrayal, etc. It is intense and a great book by many measures.
On one level, The Kite Runner is the story of two boys in Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants in America. It is a story set in a culture that has become of increasing interest to Americans since the September 11, 2001 attacks. It also explores the history of the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On this level, it provides a good way for people to learn more about Afghan history and culture in the context of the story.
Looking at The Kite Runner as a story about culture, however, misses what the book is really about. This is a novel about humanity. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption, and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal.
The Kite Runner looks at how the main character, Amir, deals with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amir’s childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society. I was drawn in by Amir’s voice. I sympathized with him, cheered for him and felt angry with him at different points. Similarly, I became attracted by Hassan and his father. The characters became real to me and it was difficult for me to put the book down and leave their world.
I highly recommend this book, especially for book clubs. For those of you who are not in a reading group, read it and then loan it to a friend. You are going to want to talk about it when you finish.
4. The underlined words “a page turner” probably mean that the book is ________.
A. abstract B. thrilling C. ridiculous D. tough
5. The greatest charm of The Kite Runner lies in ________.
A the beauty of language B. the history of the Taliban
C. the reflection of humanity D. the culture of immigrants
6. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. The story can provide inspiration for readers of various cultures.
B. The author always feels sympathy for the main character, Amir.
C. The story is set in the September 11, 2001 attacks in America.
D. The secret helped Amir to grow up in a privileged place in society.
7. What type of writing is the passage?
A. An advertisement of a book. B. An introduction to a book.
C. A summary of a book. D. A review of a book.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

The invention of the 1D barcodes revolutionized supermarkets and general market management. But shortly after their introduction, their disadvantages were clear. There was an instant demand to be able to encode (编码) more than 20 alphanumeric characters (字符) that the traditional barcodes could hold.
Denso Wave, a Japanese company, at the time, was in the business of manufacturing 1D barcode scanners. Listening to feedback from users of the 1D barcode scanners they were selling, they put together a development team to come up with a solution.
One of the key targets was to ensure that no matter what barcode they designed, it can be scanned very fast. It took the team nearly 18 months, and eventually they came up with a barcode that could hold up to 7,000 alphanumerical characters and could be scanned up to 10 times faster than any other code at the time. In 1994, the QR Code was born.
The QR Code quickly spread outside of Japan and were approved for many standards globally. But that wasn’t the end of the development of the QR Code. After all, nothing is perfect at its beginning and people soon began to present more requirements to Denso Wave. The variations (变体) of the QR Code were soon developed.
One of the biggest reasons why the QR Code has been able to be used widely is that Denso Wave made the decision to make the QR Code publicly available. This means anyone can use it without paying any fees. Denso Wave do hold a patent for the QR Code, but have declared that they have no intention to exercise it.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the first smartphones came to market with the QR Code scanner, and this really accelerated the technology. Once widespread on phones, almost anyone can read these codes and doesn’t require expensive hardware to do so. It is believed that Nokia is the first to bring this technology to a mobile device.
8. What is the disadvantage of the 1D barcodes?
A. The information they store is too little.
B. They sometimes encoded wrong characters.
C. They disturbed general market management.
D. They could only be used in some supermarkets.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A character. B. A scanner. C. A barcode. D. Denso Wave.
10. What is a reason why the QR Code spreads so quickly?
A. It has been protected by a patent.
B. The public are permitted to use it for free.
C. It has been perfect since its first appearance.
D. People have fewer demands for its variations.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. An introduction of the QR Code.
B. The disadvantages of the 1D barcodes.
C. A famous development team.
D. The reasons for developing the QR Code.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. A

Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies on both sides of the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Its highest peak is called “Clingmans Dome”. But before it got that name, the Cherokee people called the mountain “Kuwahi”. It sits on ancestral Cherokee homelands. Since the ancient times, the landscape, including mountains and streams, has shaped the history of Cherokee people. They used that name for hundreds of years. Now, tribal members are hoping to return to the Kuwahi name.
The Cherokee Nation once spread across what is now Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. In 1838, the tribe was forcibly relocated to present-day Oklahoma—in what was later known as the “Trail of Tears”. Through sickness and terrible travel conditions, nearly 4,000 Cherokee people died during the forced removal from their homeland. Some Cherokee managed to avoid relocation to Oklahoma by going into hiding, including on Kuwahi. “We’re here today because our ancestors hid in those mountains, specifically in Kuwahi,” Hill said.
The name change of the Cherokee’s mountain came in 1859, when geographer and professor Arnold Henry Guyot labeled Kuwahi “Clingmans Dome”. The peak was named after Thomas Lanier Clingman, who was a strong supporter of slavery. Clingman was not connected to the Cherokee people in any way. “Naming the mountain after Clingman erases everything that the Cherokee people are in order to rename it after someone with zero ties to our community. He didn’t even live here,” said Hill.
In June 2022, Yellowstone National Park’s Mount Doane was renamed to First Peoples Mountain. “That was a huge victory for our brothers and sisters,” Hill said. “I hope it’s just the beginning of accurately recognizing and honoring numerous historically significant sites for tribes and native people nationwide. There were so many places that were special and important to native people prior to colonization. I want to be the voice for my people, for my ancestors.”
12. What do the Cherokee people intend to do according to Paragraph 1?
A. Save their language. B. Go back to their homeland Kuwahi.
C. Reshape their history. D. Change the name back to “Kuwahi”.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The sad history of the Cherokee people.
B. The sheltering place for the Cherokee people.
C. The causes of the decrease of the Cherokee people.
D. The traveling route of the ancient Cherokee Nation.
14. What does Hill think of “Clingmans Dome”?
A. It is related to the culture of the Cherokee people.
B. It reminds the Cherokee people of their ancestors.
C. It removes everything about the Cherokee history.
D. It reflects the slave position of the Cherokee people.
15. What does Hill actually mean in the last paragraph?
A. To add great honor to her ancestors. B. To make his homeland well-known.
C. To express the opinions of her people. D. To name more historically significant sites.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C

Many of us spent our childhoods dreaming of becoming astronauts. However the hard reality is that only a select few will make it. ____16____Not necessarily.
In fact, some of the space jobs are not only for astronauts and they all sound just as cool. One of the most interesting space jobs that you may have never heard of is “chief sniffer(嗅探员)”. NASA has already hired a chief sniffer named George Aldrich, whose job is to smell materials before they are used in spacecrafts.
____17____A spacecraft is of limited size and relatively high temperature, which makes smells stronger inside of it. “Once a spacecraft is launched, astronauts have no way of escaping unpleasant smells,”Aldrich told The Telegraph. More importantly, smelling objects can help identify dangerous chemicals that could threaten astronauts' health.
Another job, the “space tour guide” , may seem a little ahead of its time - after all, what's the point of hiring a tour guide when there aren't any tourists there? But now, many private companies are starting to provide space trips, and wealthy space enthusiasts such as Justin Bieber and Sarah Brightman have already signed up for tours. ____18____
Being a space tour guide requires rich knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics, geography and history to help passengers get the most out of their journey.____19____
Astronauts often spend weeks or even months in a small capsule with the same group of people, which is why a “space psychologist” is also needed to help astronauts overcome mental challenges, like feeling bored and lonely.
Rohit Talwar, chief executive of US company Fast Future Research, said, “___20___Things we've seen in the past in movies are now becoming real career opportunities. ”
A. But does that mean you'll never get the chance to work in space?
B. Modern astronauts feel less helpless when working as a group.
C. It is impossible that normal people will be able to be a space travel.
D. It may not be long before space becomes a top travel destination.
E. Tour guides also need to be good storytellers to help space travel.
F. We're crossing the boundaries between science fiction and reality.
G. Using your nose at work sounds a little strange, but the job is very important.

A. the beauty of language B. the history of the Taliban
C. the reflection of humanity D. the culture of immigrants
C
D People have fewer demands for its variations.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. An introduction of the QR Code.
B. The disadvantages of the 1D barcodes.
C. A famous development team.
D. The reasons for developing the QR Code.
D
A It is related to the culture of the Cherokee people.

Many of us spent our childhoods dreaming of becoming astronauts. However, the hard reality is that only a select few will make it.
Another job the “space tour guide” , may seem a little ahead of its time - after all, what's the point of hiring a tour guide when there aren't any tourists there? But now, many private companies are starting to provide space trips, and wealthy space enthusiasts such as Justin Bieber and Sarah Brightman have already signed up for tours. ____18____
Being a space tour guide requires rich knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics, geography and history to help passengers get the most out of their journey.____19____
Astronauts often spend weeks or even months in a small capsule with the same group of people, which is why a “space psychologist” is also needed to help astronauts overcome mental challenges, like feeling bored and lonely.

I hated to fail in any sport, but I continued to try and final managed to go all the way down a slope (斜坡) with an accident. It was then that I realized how a great sport it was.
