The Nautilus expedition to the Cayman Islands
Hi! I’m Talita and this is my blog! Enjoy!
Day 1: August 15th
Wow! I can’t believe I’m actually here on Nautilus. I’m one of five very lucky students chosen to go on Nautilus’s four-day expedition (探险) to the Cayman Islands. We had a talk from the expedition leader Dr. Katy Croff Bell, about where we’re going and what we’ll be doing. Oh, and all the safety rules as well, of course!
Day 2: August 16th
What an amazing day! In the morning, we met Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck (残骸) of the Titanic! After lunch, we had a tour around Nautilus. We looked at the labs, and we went up to the bridge — that’s where the captain of the ship works. I even got a chance to guide the ship! Later we learned about Hercules. This robot is sent deep into the sea to look for shipwrecks, to study the plants and animals, and to look at the rocks in an area.
Day 3: August 17th
This morning we appeared on the Nautilus Live website and talked to students around the world about our expedition. It was amazing — I feel like a real famous person now! The afternoon was NOT cool, however. There was a big storm, and we all felt very seasick!
Day 4: August 18th
This morning was beautiful, and the sea was peaceful. Perfect for a dive. Unfortunately, it was Hercules, not us, who got to go diving. In the afternoon, we arrived at Grand Cayman. Although I’m sad to leave the Nautilus team (especially Hercules), I’m excited to explore the islands and the waters!

B
My Ph. D. adviser called me into his office, saying I needn't bring my notebook. After 15 minutes of listing my positive things, he looked me in the eye and said,“You are fired from the lab.”
I had moved to Israel from my native India the year before, excited to experience a new culture and study for a Ph. D. At first things went well in my new lab. Then, 3 months before I was fired, I ran into some problems. I made a few mistakes in the lab that slowed my research, but I wasn't aware that my adviser noticed them, and he never spoke to me about any concerns. I’m still not sure why he fired me, but I guess it was because of those mistakes. He wasn't confident that I could complete my research in time as we'd planned.
The first few days after I was fired were especially difficult. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, unable to get anything done. One day all I could do was sit on a beach, crying. I tried to change his mind with promising results, but he stuck to his decision. I could not break the news to my family in India, as the fear of disappointing them overwhelmed (压垮)me. I soon got into a state of sadness and anxiety. Meanwhile, the date for me to leave the country was drawing near, as my visa required me to be registered as a student. I was lonely and without hope.
Around that time, I watched Dasvidaniya, a Bollywood movie that's about a man who has 3 months to live. One line from the movie stuck out to me :“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade(柠檬水)” .What kind of lemonade could I make out of my present situation? My desire to complete a Ph. D. was never in doubt. After much reflection, I told myself that one failed attempt was not the end of the world, and that I needed to give it another try. With renewed confidence, I emailed expected advisers and applied to other programs. Within 2 months, I landed an offer from a Ph. D. program in Italy. I accepted it and relocated to Europe, happy that my goal of completing a Ph. D. was alive once again.
I’m thankful that I didn't give up on my dream and that I found another professor willing to take me on.

A. He applied for a new visa.
B. He got addicted to computer games.

A. Persuading the adviser to let him stay.
B. Being responsible for different programs.

An international group of electronic music composers is taking beats from the dance club to jungles and forests and back, all to help save nature’s greatest singers. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean is a new album that includes the sounds of endangered birds. The album will come out next month, whose proceeds will go directly towards efforts to save birds.
The whole project was born out of this idea of trying to combine birdsong, electronic music and conservation. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean was organized by activist, music producer, Robin Perkins. He invited artists from each of the endangered birds ‘homelands to build their own songs around the birds’ songs. There are contributions from ten artists in eight different countries.
First single Black Catbird was created by The Garifuna Collective, from Belize. Al Obando, guitarist and producer of the group, always took in national parks and viewed birds when on the road with the band. “There are no trails, and there are no signs there to tell you about what you’re seeing,” Obando says. “So we’re trying to do something for the birds and nature tourism.”
Another musician who responded to Robin’s call is Tamara Montenegro, an artist from Nicaragua. She was shocked to hear of the serious situation of the Guardabarranco after being approached: “This beautiful creature I grew up adoring also faced the influence of the systematic human activities”. In response, she created a song inspired by this bird and the challenges it faces to live naturally.
The new album is the second edition, following on from A Guide to the Birdsong of South America, produced by Robin in 2015. That first album has raised, to date, over $15,000 benefitting conservation projects in South America. As with the first album, all of the money from the sales of the new album will support specific organizations, including Birds Caribbean.
8. What does the underlined word “proceeds” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Profits. B. Budgets. C. Challenges. D. Effects.
9. What do we know about Al Obando?
A. He created a hit single himself.
B. He was fond of observing birds.
C. He was the organizer of the new album.
D. He did a lot for birds in South America.
10. Why was Tamara astonished to learn of the Guardabarranco?
A. It was friendly to humans.
B. It was living in bad conditions.
C. It was beautiful in appearance.
D. It was facing challenges from other birds.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To collect money for a project.
B. To popularize electronic music.
C. To recommend some famous artists.
D. To introduce a new album of electronic music.

In China, tea has become an important part of everyday life for thousands of years. As the tea-processing methods and tea culture have evolved over the years, tea sets have also changed to meet the practical and cultural needs.
During the Tang Dynasty(618~907AD), tea leaves were traded across the country and Asia. For the convenience of transportation and storage, tea leaves were pressed into bricks. To prepare tea, drinkers had to cut them into small pieces and boil them in heat-resistant teapots.
By the Song Dynasty(960-1279), drinkers started to turn the hard bricks into powders (粉末) that could be whipped (搅打) in a cup with boiled water. This whipped tea is most commonly associated with Japanese tea ceremonies today.
By the 1500s, tea bricks gave way to the form of rolled leaves. This innovation led to the invention and use of teapots as we know them today. These teapots originally came from the Yi Xing region of China and were soon copied throughout the world. Then Japanese teapot-makers moved the handle from the side to the top of the teapots.
Tea finally reached Europe in the 1600s, along with the necessary tea sets made in Japan and China. As English teapot-makers began to adapt the tea sets to their country men’s tastes, they eventually added a handle to the tea bowl because of the English habit of drinking hot black tea, which was consumed at higher temperatures. The size of teacups also grew to accommodate milk and sugar in their tea.
By the early 1900s, innovations in tea drinking became an American affair. The most revolutionary one was the tea bag, which was accidentally commercialized by Thomas Sullivan. He had been sending customers tea wrapped in silk bags. Rather than take the leaves out of the bags, as Sullivan intended, the customers put the bags into their teapots instead. Not only did the tea bags push the teapot back to the sidelines of tea service, they were also too large for teacups and led to the modern practice of drinking tea from mugs.
12. Which was used to make the whipped tea in Japan?
A. Rolled tea leaves. B. Freshly picked tea leaves.
C. Powdered tea leaves. D. Loosely pressed tea leaves.
13. Which innovation was first introduced by the British?
A. Tea bags and mugs. B. Tea bowls with handles.
C. Heat-resistant teapots. D. Teapots with top handles.
14. What can we learn from Thomas Sullivan’s story?
A. Customers are very creative. B. Innovations are relatively easy.
C. Marketing strategy is critical. D. Good ideas can be born by accident.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Development of Tea Sets B. Varieties of Tea Leaves
C. Various Tea-making Methods D. The Spread of Tea Trades

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this? The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.

My Ph. D. adviser called me into his office, saying I needn't bring my notebook.

I made a few mistakes in the lab that slowed my research….I’m still not sure why he fired me, but I guess it was because of those mistakes. He wasn't confident that I could complete my research in time as we'd planned.(在解雇前三个月,我在实验室犯了一些错误,延缓了我的研究进度......

C 13. B 14. D 15. A

This whipped tea is most commonly associated with Japanese tea ceremonies today.
根据文章第五段“As English teapot-makers began to adapt the tea sets to their country men’s tastes, they eventually added a handle to the tea bowl because of the English habit of drinking hot black tea, which was consumed at higher temperatures. (随着英国的茶具制造商开始根据英国人的口味调整茶具,他们最终在茶碗上加了一个把手,因为英国人习惯喝热红茶,这种茶要在较高的温度下饮用。)”可知,带有把手的茶碗是英国人最先提出的创新。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The most revolutionary one was the tea bag, which was accidentally commercialized by Thomas Sullivan. (最具革命性的是茶包,它被托马斯·沙利文意外地商业化了。)”可推断,有的创意是偶然的。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“As the tea-processing methods and tea culture have evolved over the years, tea sets have also changed to meet the practical and cultural needs. (随着多年来茶叶加工方法和茶文化的发展,茶具也发生了变化,以满足实用和文化的需要。)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要是讲茶具的衍变,A项“茶具的发展”适合作文章标题。故选A。

根据前文“Slow travel is about connecting deeply with your travels. Rather than rushing from one place to another, slow travelers treat each experience as an opportunity to learn and feel more deeply to the people, culture, and food they want to explore.(慢速旅行就是与你的旅行紧密相连。慢速旅行者不会匆忙地从一个地方跑到另一个地方,而是把每一次经历都当作一个学习的机会,更深入地感受他们想要探索的人、文化和食物)”可知,本文主题是讲述慢速旅行,结合后文小标题,可知本文介绍尝试慢旅行的一些原因。所以E项“Here are some reasons we think you need to try slow travel(以下是我们认为你需要尝试慢旅行的一些原因)”能承接上文,并总领下文。故选E项。
根据前文“Once, a vacation provided relaxation from the stress of everyday life. But over time, we began trying to put everything we want into a checklist.(曾经,假期能让人从日常生活的压力中得到放松。但随着时间的推移,我们开始尝试把我们想要的东西都列在清单上)”可知,此处是在讲述曾经假期能让人从日常生活的压力中得到放松,但是现在开始尝试把我们想要的东西都列在清单上,可知C项“This created more stress than we were escaping.(这比我们逃避的压力更大)”是对前句的结果描述,说明了上文的不良影响。符合文意,其中stress为同词复现。故选C项。
【18题详解】
分析设空,位于句首,应是总领本段,根据后文“If so, the idea of slow travel may feel like you’ll miss the latest Top 10. (如果是这样的话,慢旅行的想法可能会让你觉得你错过了最新的十佳)”可知,空处应是提到一种和慢旅行不同的方式,所以G项“Maybe you’re used to jumping from one attraction after another(也许你已经习惯了从一个景点跳到另一个景点)”符合文意,和慢旅行相悖的方式,引出下文,后文的if so代指本句提到的方式。故选G项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“When you decide to take the slow travel route, you free yourself up to meet and spend time with others. You can meet locals at a park or restaurant and enjoy a conversation. Learn about the people on your food tour. You may even decide that you like someone enough to meet him/her later for lunch or a coffee.(当你决定走慢速旅行路线时,你就可以腾出时间和别人见面。
分析设空可知,空处是本段小标题,根据后文“Traveling by plane, train, and bus has a bad effect on the environment. We can transport ourselves to one location and spend more time exploring it on foot, by bike or on horseback. That’s less harmful to the planet than rushing to the next thing on the list with whatever vehicle that will get us there in a hurry.(乘飞机、火车和公共汽车旅行对环境有不好的影响。我们可以把自己带到一个地方,花更多的时间步行、骑自行车或骑马去探索它。这对地球的危害要比开着任何能让我们快速到达那里的交通工具匆忙去做清单上的下一件事要小)”可知,本段主要讲述了慢速旅行会更环保,所以A项“Be more eco-friendly.(更加环保)”是本段小标题。故选A项。

Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.

Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.”
①开始:began/started/initiate
②大喊:shout/yell/bawl/exclaim
③承诺:promise/commit/make a commitment/give one’s word
①热泪盈眶:be filled with tears/cry one’s eyes out/tears well up in one’s eyes
②道歉:made an apology/apologized to sb./said sorry to sb.

[高分句型2] It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me.
