On Christmas Eve morning I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been months since she’d disappeared, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all.
My dad and I spent the last holiday searching for her in the park nearby. Dad was the family’s “realist,” which meant he spent time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith!
Though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. Even after I lived without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited one day.
Now, again for the holidays, I made up my mind to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter.
“Sharon, be realistic!” my dad said as we headed to the garage. “She’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find her.”
“Well, I just have a feeling,” I said. “Don’t you believe in Christmas miracle?”
At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad said.
I insisted on stepping into the room. Suddenly, there came a familiar meow (猫叫). I followed it and my eyes fell on a little cat with big green eyes. Skinnier than I remembered, it was Baby-Girl! My eyes welled up with tears. I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms.
24.What did the author’s father think about the lost cat?
A.It could be stolen. B.It wasn’t lovely at all.
C.It could be seen again. D.It was impossible to be found.
25.Which word can be used to describe the author?
A.Ambitious. B.Indifferent. C.Determined. D.Considerate.
26.Where was the cat found?
A.The shelter. B.The garage. C.The park. D.The car.
27.What did Christmas miracle refer to in the text?
A.The lost cat came home on her own.
B.The father decided to retake the pet.
C.The lost cat and the author reunited.
D.The father got together with the author.

Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.
Her poems described conditions in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.
In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago, where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions of the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen. Annie Allen is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms. Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.
Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.
In some of her poems Gwendolyn Brooks described what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curing Sky.
By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks’ poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.
28.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The life of Gwendolyn Brooks. B.The poems of Gwendolyn Brooks.
C.The struggles of black women. D.The understanding about black culture.
29.What can we learn about Gwendolyn Brooks from the second paragraph?
A.Her writing skills were a little worse than her ability.
B.She mainly wrote about the struggles of black women.
C.She was good at using the language of poetry.
D.Her poems were mainly about the African experience.
30.The author develops the passage mainly by ______.
A.providing examples B.using statistics
C.comparing opinions D.describing her experiences
31.In the next part, the author would most probably talk about ______.
A.the difficulties Ms. Brooks would meet B.the struggles that the black had to face
C.the awards Gwendolyn Brooks gained D.the poems related to political issues
D
The printed book is back. Recent studies have shown that students remember more information when they read a paper book compared to reading an e-book. One school responded to these findings by ditching its e-readers. The students found that “the ease of navigation (导航)” was greater when using a traditional book.
I love the way we now judge printed books using the language of the digital world. E-books may come with “navigational tools,” but it turns out the best navigational tools are the “devices” at the ends of your arms. You can use them to flip the pages forward and backward.
Fans of digital books may point out that e-readers have a handy “search” tool. Old-fashioned books also have a search function, in which you turn back to the opening part to help you remember the hero’s name. They even have a “bookmark system,” which uses something called a “bookmark.”
Can a traditional book offer all the features of an e-book? Alas, no. It has no “progress bar (进度条)” indicating how much of the book has been read. Luckily, a clever tip is available: turn your book so that it can be viewed from the side or top. It will naturally form two parts joined in the middle. If the left part is thicker than the right one, you are more than halfway through.
Admittedly, e-books are lighter than paper books, but one must question whether this is really an advantage. In secondary school my body figure was actually transformed by the daily need to carry textbooks. For me and my fellow students, these weighty books would draw our shoulders back and our chests forward.
Educational fashions come and go, so maybe the return of traditional books won’t last. But for the moment, I find myself welcoming their wonderful return.
32.Which can best replace the underlined “ditching” in paragraph 1?
A.Referring to. B.Getting rid of.
C.Getting used to. D.Making use of.
33.What can serve as the “navigational tool” of printed books?
A.Bookmarks. B.Fingers. C.The progress bar. D.The opening part.
34.What purpose does the example in paragraph 5 serve?
A.To explain an opposing idea. B.To provide additional information.
C.To support the author’s argument. D.To connect paragraph five and paragraph six.
35.What might be the best title?
A.Why the Printed Book Is Back?
B.How the Printed Book Benefits us?
C.What Future the Printed Book Faces?
D.Which Is Better, Printed Book or E-book?

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in Grade 10, my family had a tough time. My parents lost their jobs during the Depression. Dad was too ill to work outside, while mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We relied on our community assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second-hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through for sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our shoes were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
New Year was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar fund for social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for New Year.
Unknown to Mum, I had been shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of gloves. I knew exactly which gloves I wanted. They were made of genuine leather and they had a price of twenty-three dollars. Well, the big day came on the last day of that year. I was very excited, as I hurried up to catch the bus. It was only a half-a-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for goodies. I knew then that we would have no delicious food for New Year, and I felt sad.
As I continued walking, I began to feel bewildered. I was sixteen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of gloves while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents.

1.续写词数应为150左右:

The bus drove off without me.

M: You’ve got a degree in finance. Why did you apply for this job?
W: I read the job description and discovered a few interesting programs that I’d like to be a part of. They’re challenging yet rewarding. Just the sort of things I consider to fit me best.
M: I see. But given your educational background, wouldn’t you want to work for some bigger companies?

M: That’s very interesting. When will you be available for employment?
W: In two weeks. I’ve promised my parents a ten-day visit. I can start work immediately after I’m back.

One school responded to these findings by ditching its e-readers.(最近的研究表明,与阅读电子书相比,学生在阅读纸质书时记住的信息更多。一所学校对这些发现做出了回应,ditching电子阅读器)”可知,最新调查说明电子书不如纸质书,所以这里指一个学校“放弃”电子书,从而推测 ditching为“放弃”的意思。故选B项。
33.推理判断题。由文章第二段“E-books may come with ‘navigational tools,’ but it turns out the best navigational tools are the ‘devices’ at the ends of your arms. You can use them to flip the pages forward and backward. (电子书可能会附带‘导航工具’,但事实证明,最好的导航工具是你手臂末端的‘设备’。你可以使用它们向前和向后翻页)”可推知,这里手臂末端的“设备”应指的是手指。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。由文章第五段“Admittedly, e-books are lighter than paper books, but one must question whether this is really an advantage. In secondary school my body figure was actually transformed by the daily need to carry textbooks. 39.根据前文“To overcome your fear of what others think and of their non-approval, you should start talking about your plans.(为了克服你对别人的想法和不赞成的恐惧,你应该开始谈论你的计划。)”和后文“By talking to them, you’ll be able to organize your plans and ideas.(通过与他们交谈,你将能够组织你的计划和想法。)”可知,此处是指和朋友谈论自己的计划和想法,所以选项G“例如,你可以和你的朋友分享你的意图”切合文意。故选G。
40.根据后文“You’ll find barriers along your way.(你会在前进的道路上遇到障碍。)”可知,此处是指凡事也不会都一帆风顺,所以选项F“不可避免的是,并非所有事情都会一帆风顺”切合文意。故选F。

66.Dear Jim,
I’m delighted to know you’re preparing for the Asian Cultural Exhibition. I’d like to recommend a fascinating and culturally significant festival: the Dragon Boat Festival.
It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, commemorating the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, a loyal minister to the king of Chu. After he drowned himself in the river, people rowed dragon boats to scatter rice to prevent fish from eating his body. From then on, people began to make rice dumplings and race dragon boats annually.
It will provide you with a unique and engaging experience to learn about Chinese culture. I hope my recommendation is helpful.
Best regards,
Li Hua

67. The bus drove off without me. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I went into the store and bought a turkey, ham, oranges and other goodies. I spent every dollar of my hard-earned money. The owner of the grocery store said, “Girl, the groceries have packed up like a mountain, and you can’t carry them home by yourself. So I asked two boys with carriers on their bicycles to run them the half-mile down to my house. With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door.
When Mum opened the door, she surprisingly found that some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor. Holding back the tears I whispered “Happy New Year! A big surprise!” “Can you tell me what happened?” Mum was so excited that she cried out. I had a lot of explanation as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. Even though I failed to get a new pair of gloves, the smile on Mum’s face made it all worthwhile. It was an unforgettable New Year for us after all!
