Four Historic American Theatres
Today, theatres remain a key part of a city’s lifeblood. The following are four historic theatres in America.
Pantages Theatre, Minneapolis, MN
The Pantages Theatre, which now seats 1,014, opened in 1916 as part of Alexander Pantages’s well-known group of theatres. It was designed by the local firm Kees and Colburn. In 1922, the theatres was rebuilt by Scottish theatres architect Benjamin Marcus Priteca. After going through several owners, in 1984, it was closed and remained unopened until 1996. Some theatre supporters had it repaired and improved, resulting in its reopening in 2002.
Saenger Theatre, New Orleans, LA
New Orleans’s Saenger Theatre was built two years before the Great Depression, in 1927, and cost a then unheard-of $ 2.5 million. It was designed by Emile Weil, featuring a 15th-century Florentine courtyard and gardens, and Greek and Roman statues. Although the theatre was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, after a $ 53 million renovation (修葺), it reopened in 2013.
Thalian Hall, Wilmington, NC
Thalian Hall has been in almost continuous use since its opening in 1858. It is the only surviving theatre designed by John Montague Trimble, one of America’s foremost 19th-century theatre architects, and originally housed the town government, a library, as well as an “Opera House”, seating 1, 000 people. Some repairs in 1909 led to the removal of the side balconies and the installation of electric stage lights.
Providence Performing Arts Center, Providence, RI
It was originally opened as a movie palace in 1928, and the silent movies it showed were accompanied by a $ 90, 000 Robert Morton organ. After several decades, the theatre suffered from the increased popularity of television, as well as damage by two hurricanes. Over the past decade and a half, it has undergone extensive renovations and modernization.
21. What can we know about the Pantages Theatre?
A. It has a seating capacity of 1, 916. B. It will be turned into a movie house.
C. It was designed by Alexander Pantages. D. It was once shut down for over a decade.

Torbjorn Pedersen is a Danish traveler who recently finished a trip around the world. But this wasn’t just any trip.
In 2013, Mr. Pedersen read an article about someone who had visited all the countries of the world. It made him realize he could set a record by doing the same thing, but without flying.
He hoped that he could live on a budget of about $20 a day. He had originally anticipated it would take four years to reach countries, but the world had other plans.
Though he did have to quit his job and leave his parents and girlfriend behind, the first part of his trip was pretty easy, but as he moved on to other parts of the world, things began to get hard.
To cross large bodies of water, Mr. Pedersen took boats. Sometimes it was hard to find a boat. At other times, Mr. Pedersen was on a boat for days, being tossed (摇摆颠簸) by strong waves during a storm. He traveled by taxi, bus, train, and even walking. With a limited budget, sometimes people invited him into their homes. At other times, he had to sleep outside. Mr. Pedersen says he had many difficult experiences. He was once held at gunpoint and thought he might be killed. He also became severely ill with a serious disease.
But he also had many good experiences. Mr. Pedersen says that one reason why he didn’t give up was the help he got from people all over the world. On July 26, Mr. Pedersen arrived back in Denmark after a 33-day boat ride. He was met by about 150 people, including friends and family members.
In the last 10 years, he’s covered around 260,000 miles — roughly 10 times the distance around the Earth. Mr. Pedersen says he’s looking forward to some quiet time to think about his trip. After that, he plans to write a book and share what he learned in his travels around the world.
24. What inspired Torbjorn Pedersen to start the trip around the world?
A. The dream of setting a world record. B. The knowledge of a stranger’s experience.
C. The desire to experience different cultures. D. The encouragement of his parents and girlfriend.
25. How can we understand the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?
A. He failed to carry out his plan.
B. He finished his trip smoothly as expected.
C. He spent more than four years travelling around the world.
D. He changed his plans over the course of the trip intentionally.
26. What’s the main idea of the fifth paragraph?
A. The help Mr. Pedersen got from others.
B. The challenges Mr. Pedersen met on the way.
C. The efforts Mr. Pedersen made to achieve his goal.
D The inconvenient transportation Mr. Pedersen underwent.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Mr. Pedersen?
A. Courageous and determined. B. Ambitious and helpful.
C. Sincere and independent. D. Amusing and strong-willed.
C
A storm hit Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. It brought heavy rains and rising flood-waters. By Tuesday night, some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain. Police and firefighters helped people move to safe places. They also saved people from cars and buses that were stuck on roads.
Certain areas around Houston were hit really hard. In just four hours, more than seven inches of rain fell in Sugar Land in the southwest of Houston. Cars could not pass through any of the areas main roadways. On Twitter, Sugar Land city officials asked people to get to high ground.
Tuesday’s rain hit parts of Texas that Hurricane Harvey had already damaged almost two years ago. Hurricane Harvey in August, 2017 was the second most costly hurricane in US history. It caused $125 billion worth of damage in Texas. In the Houston area, 36 people died and about 150, 000 homes were flooded.
A spokesman for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management spoke with the Houston Chronicle. The spokesman said that this week’s rain is “not in any way a Harvey-level event.”
But the worst may not be over yet. People will have a break from the heavy rain on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week. "Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,” said Don Oettinger, a National Weather Service meteorologist (气象学家).
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peia warned, “As there is too much water on the ground, these are perfect conditions for flash floods, so we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and encourage them to stay home. There’s no sense in putting yourself, firefighters or anybody in danger needlessly.”
28. What are Paragraphs 1 and 2 mainly about?
A. Flood damage in Houston. B. Flood prevention in Houston.
C. Heavy floods hitting Houston. D. People fighting floods in Houston.
29. What do we know about Hurricane Harvey?
A. It caused no deaths or injuries. B. It did a lot of damage to Texas.
C. It was less serious than this week’s rain. D. It was the biggest hurricane on record.
30. What can we learn from the weather report of the National Weather Service?
A. Fine days are coming. B. It will rain a little non-stop.
C. A hurricane is unavoidable. D. Floods will continue.
31. What did Samuel suggest local people do?
A. Stay indoors. B. Join firefighters.
C. Give up needless things. D. Comfort those who lost homes.
D
Even though water covers about 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, not all of it is safe to drink. In fact, less than three percent is fresh water, according to the United States Bureau of Reclamation. Most of the water is contained in the oceans and must be desalinated (脱盐)for use. Now researchers from MIT have developed a suitcase-sized desalination device that could be used to produce clean drinking water.
The new portable device produces water that actually goes beyond the World Health Organization standards, just by pushing a button, according to a press release from MIT. There are no filters required. The device powered by a small portable solar panel uses electricity to remove salt and other particles from the saltwater. This eliminates the need for repeatedly checking or repairing it.
Now most available portable desalination units use filters that require high-pressure pumps to push the water, which makes them heavier and less energy efficient. The filterless feature of the new device will allow it to be used in faraway places or places with limited resources like small islands and ships, and even for emergencies.
“This is really the highest point of a 10-year journey that I and my group have been on. We worked for years on the physics behind individual desalination processes, but pushing all those advances into a box, building a system, and testing it in the ocean were really meaningful experiences for me,” says Jongyoon Han, the senior author of the study.
After the researchers ran tests in the lab, the device was ready for field tests. At Boston’s Carson Beach, the device filled a plastic drinking cup with clear, drinkable water in just half an hour. Now the researchers are still working on a final design that could use cheaper materials so that it can be available to the general public, and a new model of the device could be ready by the end of 2022. This small but powerful desalination unit may be the key to bringing safe water to a thirsty world.
32. What does the underlined word “eliminates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Proves. B. Creates. C. Satisfies. D. Removes.
33. What can we infer about the device from Paragraph 3?
A. It allows high production of clean water. B. It makes a breakthrough in application
C. It may provide power for faraway places D. It can replace most desalination devices.
34. What do Jongyoon Han’s words suggest?
A. The public thinks highly of the device
B. The testing system for the device has been out of date.
C. Developing the device is challenging but worthwhile.
D. Further studies are needed before marketing the device.
35. Which aspect of the device are the researchers trying to improve?
A. Its affordability. B. The energy it needs.
C. Its performance in dry areas. D. The purity of the water it produces.

Anybody passing by the school’s football ground wouldn’t miss noticing Jake Harvey and his friends talking about soccer. The boys always thought they would merely select those who had the physique(体格)and skills to represent their team.
One day, the team’s “head”, as they called him, Jake, was busy playing soccer with his friends when the newcomer, Sam, in their class walked over. The little boy called out saying he was ready to play, but Jake’s team paused and turned in disbelief, staring at the boy’s artificial leg. “How on earth will you play for us with that artificial leg?” Jake said. Sam got depressed when Jake’s words echoed in his ears. He almost cried but he didn’t want his tears to weaken him in front of the boys.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jones, the school’s physical trainer, saw the whole thing from his office window. After the practice session, he walked over to Jake and took him aside for a word in private. “I saw what happened, and if I’m not wrong, you sent away that newcomer, right?” Mr. Jones asked Jake. “Do you have any idea who he is?” Jake was shocked after Mr. Jones revealed Sam’s background.
As it turned out, Sam was captain of the soccer team in his previous school. He was also an excellent goalkeeper who had won several gold medals for his team. “Maybe, Mr. Jones... But I don’t see any hope of having him on our team. Just look at his leg,” Jake said to the teacher.
Seeing that Jake felt dissatisfied with Sam’s condition, Mr. Jones unfolded another story about how Sam lost his leg.
One day, Sam’s school bus met with a car accident on the way back from a trip. The school bus was set on fire;though Sam got out and reached safety, he realized one of his classmates was still on the school bus. He risked his own life to save her without hesitation. With all his strength, he carried her out of the bus. As a result, the girl was saved but Sam’s leg was severely injured and had to be amputated(截肢).
Paragraph 1:
Jake was deeply moved by Sam’s bravery and became teary-eyed.

【解析】
【原文】M: What is life like for today’s students? How do they treat money? As the university and college terms began, I interviewed a few students. Sarah is a second-year biology student. She says that money is a big problem. She can eat cheaply at university but she spends quite a lot on transport. She also spends quite a lot on stylish clothes. Colin who is studying engineering says that he doesn’t spend anything on clothes unless counting climbing shoes and special tools, some of which are very expensive. Not much of his money goes on transport because he likes to ride his bike around. Diana is a first-year designing student. She makes all her own clothes. This should save her money. But in fact, the materials are very expensive. She does not know how she would manage if she did not sell some of the dresses and hats she made to other students. She says that everything is expensive. That includes rent, food, transport and heating for the flat in winter. Jack is a science student. He doesn’t spend much money on clothes but his rent is high and he spends quite a lot on books. So he is doing part-time jobs to afford all of these.

A He failed to carry out his plan.
B He finished his trip smoothly as expected.
D. The inconvenient transportation Mr. Pedersen underwent.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Mr. Pedersen?
A. Courageous and determined. B. Ambitious and helpful.
C. Sincere and independent. D. Amusing and strong-willed.

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. A

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲麻省理工学院的研究人员已经开发出一种手提箱大小的脱盐装置,可以用来生产清洁的饮用水。
【32题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第二段“There are no filters required. The device powered by a small portable solar panel uses electricity to remove salt and other particles from the saltwater. (该装置由一个小型便携式太阳能电池板供电,利用电力去除盐水中的盐和其他微粒)”以及第三段“Now most available portable desalination units use filters that require high-pressure pumps to push the water, which makes them heavier and less energy efficient. (现在大多数便携式脱盐装置都使用需要高压泵推动水的过滤器,这使得它们更重,能效更低)”可知,与以前的设备对比,新设备更简单更轻更有效,能“消除”反复检查或维修这些问题。所以推测eliminate是“消除,排除”的意思。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第三段“The filterless feature of the new device will allow it to be used in faraway places or places with limited resources like small islands and ships, and even for emergencies.(新设备的无过滤器功能将允许它用于遥远的地方或资源有限的地方,如小岛屿和船只,甚至用于紧急情况)”可知,新设备在运用的场地方面有了突破。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段“‘This is really the highest point of a 10-year journey that I and my group have been on. We worked for years on the physics behind individual desalination processes, but pushing all those advances into a box, building a system, and testing it in the ocean were really meaningful experiences for me,’ says Jongyoon Han, the senior author of the study.(该研究的资深作者Jongyoon Han说:“这真的是我和我的团队十年旅程中的最高点。我们多年来一直致力于个体脱盐过程背后的物理研究,但把所有这些进展都推到一个盒子里,建立一个系统,并在海洋中进行测试,对我来说是非常有意义的经历。”)”可知,整个研发过程持续十年说明这项目很有挑战性,但Jongyoon Han也认为这很有意义,是值得的。故选C项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段“ Now the researchers are still working on a final design that could use cheaper materials so that it can be available to the general public, and a new model of the device could be ready by the end of 2022. (现在,研究人员仍在研究最终设计,该设计可以使用更便宜的材料,以便公众可以使用,2022年底,该设备的新型号可能会准备就绪)”可知,现在研究者正在考虑价格问题,准备使用更便宜材料以致于公众能够购买得起。故选A项。

Reflecting on these words, Jake felt more regretful. He then gathered the members of his team, and after a short discussion, they reached an agreement that they believed would be a surprise to Sam.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, Jake went to the classroom, saying he had an important announcement to make. All the classmates turned to him, including Sam. Hearing he had been selected as the new goalkeeper of the team, Sam could hardly believe his ears. Then Jake walked up to Sam, making a public apology to him. Realizing what was happening, Sam smiled and said with gratitude, “Thank you! Jake.” Mr. Jones watched them from outside the classroom, feeling relieved at the scene.
