Their first book came out in 1812. Why are German fairy tales so interesting? Maybe it’s because they come from a great place famous for its stories—the Black Forest. The Black Forest is in southwest Germany. It’s the largest forest in the country and one of the most beautiful. It’s famous for its trees and lovely views. There are valleys and waterfalls there. It’s a good place to start a story. Don’t forget to bring something back if you visit it. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms. Dawn sees saturated reds; The town’s heavy with blooms. ——Translated by Xu Yuanchong This famous poem, with four couplets (对句), was written by Du Fu (712—770, the Tang Dynasty). He was living and farming in Chengdu at that time. His farming experience taught him to be thankful to the nature. The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough and it comes in time for the farmers’ busy season. The farmers are happy to welcome the rain. When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known. In the third couplet, the poet describes a peaceful scene to us. In the sky at night, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the river boat makes the dark scene a bit livelier. Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful. Because all of the flowers bloom after the rain. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 25. What’s the Chinese title of the poem Happy Rain on a Spring Night? A. 《春晓》 B. 《春夜喜雨》 C. 《夜雨寄北》 26. Which word can be used to describe the rain in this poem? A. Heavy. B. Busy. C. Quiet. 27. Which of the following uses personification (拟人)? A. With wind it steals in night. B. It will fall when comes spring. C. The town’s heavy with blooms (blooming flowers). 28. What does Du Fu want to show in this poem? A. He’s thankful to the nature. B. He loves and enjoys farming. C. He expects the flowers to bloom. C Have you ever felt like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you hurry from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it’s easy to get lost of what you’re doing or learning. It’s important to stop yourself to think about what you’ve been doing or learning. Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and cooling yourself down, including calming (平静) your mind. By being calm and not going quickly, you give your brain a chance (机会) to think about what is already received. Some people like to do self-reflections only in their mind. Others write down in diaries or notes. Either way works, depending on your own personal learning. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection. First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are divided (划分) into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection. Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you’ve written before and make some connections (联系). Finally, think about things that you’re not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic. Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now. 29. According to Paragraph 2, people CANNOT do self-reflection by ________. A. taking notes B. working quickly C. keeping a diary 30. What does the underlined word “complete” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Stop. B. Start. C. Finish. 31. The structure (结构) of this pass age can be ________. A. B. C. 32. Which can be the best title for this passage? A. What is Self-reflection? B. Why is Self-reflection Important? C. How to do Self-reflection? D The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule. Between 221 and 210 B.C., he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers (兵马俑). These, he hoped, would protect his tomb (坟墓) after his death. Lost in Time The soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren’t always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After they were exposed (暴露) to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history. New Technology Now new technology is starting to show the army’s true colors. Archeologists (考古学家) have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features (特征), including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid (液体) to help save the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic (塑料). Back to Life Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt (灰尘) around the soldiers. It’s important not to do anything with the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. “We are treating the dirt as an art piece,” says Rong Bo, the museum’s leading archeologist. The next challenge (挑战), says Rong Bo, is to find a way to use the colors onto the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to its full, bright colors. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 33. Why was the Terracotta Army built? A. To help Emperor Qin rule the country better. B. To protect Emperor Qin’s tomb after he died. C. To show Emperor Qin’s ability to other countries. 34. Why are the soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum today light brown? A. Because they are too old. B. Because they lost their time. C. Because their paint fell off. 35. What does the underlined word “They” in the passage refer to (指的是)? A. Archeologists. B. Soldiers. C. Researchers. 36. Which statement (陈述) would Rong Bo probably agree? A. The soldiers should stay in their present color, light brown. B. People are working hard to bring back the army’s bright colors. C. Archeologists can only guess at the soldiers’ true colors. E In England, students need to take cooking classes at school. It sounds unbelievable, right? This is how the story began. One day, Jude’s father, Isaiah, heard a noise coming from the basement(地下室). Then he found Jude playing the old electronic keyboard(电子琴) there. And to Isaiah’s surprise, the boy played it well. “It’s a miracle(奇迹) because no one taught Jude how to play,” Isaiah thought. After checking many times, he found that Jude could play any song he heard. Then he realized that Jude was talented in music. The happy father shared a video of Jude playing the keyboard on the Internet. Soon it became popular. Bill Magnusson , a piano tuner (调音师), read the story about Jude online and heard him play. He learned that Jude’s parents came from Ghana and were raising four children. They lived a hard life, so they couldn’t buy a piano for Jude. “This boy is a talent. I need to do something to help him,” Magnusson thought. Then Magnusson bought the piano for Jude and promised to tune it once a month for the rest of his life. He’s also paying for Jude to get piano lessons. Jude was very excited when he saw the piano in his house.
