B Six-year-old Amar Lal was never concerned with what year, month, week or day it was. His routine was the same. Every morning the family would pack their belongings and move from quarry (采石场) to quarry, where they began a day’s work. As the colours of the sky changed from blue to orange to black, the family would break stones. Needless to say, school was a distant dream as was permanent housing. But one day in 2001, Lal’s destiny changed when Nobel Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi paid a visit to the quarry. Recalling the fateful day in 2001 when Satyarthi was conducting a gathering in his village — an education march part of the “Save Childhood Movement” — Lal says Satyarthi spotted him carrying heavy stones. A short conversation later, Satyarthi had convinced Lal’s parents that their child was meant for greater things. “I vividly recall Satyarthi asking my parents whether I went to school. But not my parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents had ever been to school. They looked at him with a puzzled look because a nomadic (游牧的) lifestyle was the only one we knew. Work was all we were taught to do,” the 27-year-old lawyer Lal shares. His parents were interested by this “angel” who assured them that a better world lay outside this quarry — a world where their children could play, laugh and learn. They decided to trust Satyarthi. And several days later, Lal went to Satyarthi’s centre for children. Thus began Lal’s second chapter of life. “My education at Satyarthi’s centre taught me that child labour is a serious problem and children around India are subjected to cruelty under the banner of ‘work’. I was really grateful that I was given a chance at a new life which thousands of children dreamed of. I wanted to give other children the same.” Since Lal graduated as a lawyer in 2018, he has been working with Satyarthi on cases and practical assistance, and in turn, giving hope to many more children. 24.How was Lal’s life before meeting Satyarthi? A.He worked as a labourer. B.He led a comfortable life. C.He was abused in the family. D.He liked to observe the sky. 25.Who is Satyarthi most likely to be? A.An advocate for children’s rights. B.An owner of a big quarry. C.A Nobel Prize winner in medicine. D.An expert in children’s behavior. 26.How might Lal’s parents react to Satyarthi’s question? A.They felt annoyed. B.They were confused. C.They felt unhappy. D.They were disappointed. 27.Which of the following can best describe Lal? A.Grateful and generous. B.Reliable and determined. C.Ambitious and modest. D.Lucky and responsible. C Rolland and Adeline are proud parents to nine beautiful children. Their youngest two, daughter Lanto, and son, Rindra, were both born with cleft lip (唇裂) conditions. In Madagascar, many families have never seen a cleft lip before, so it’s a condition often greeted with fear and misfortune in some rural communities. However, the news of Lanto and Rindra’s cleft lip wasn’t much of a shock for Rolland and Adeline because Rolland’s cousin—a man in his fifties — had lived his entire adult life with an untreated cleft lip. Although seeing a relative with a cleft lip meant the family weren’t fearful of the condition, they knew the negative impact an untreated cleft lip can have on a person’s health and life. As all loving parents would, Rolland and Adeline wanted a better future for their children. Rolland heard an advertisement on the radio about an Operation Smile surgical programme in Antsirabe, Madagascar. Finding out that Rindra and Lanto could have the cleft lip surgery they needed, for free, was a dream for the family. Unlike here in the UK, health services aren’t free in many parts of the world, and the costs of treatment — or even travelling to reach medical facilities — are out of reach for most families. When Rolland and his children arrived at the patient village, they were surprised to see so many other families in the same position. After a thorough medical evaluation by medical volunteers, Lanto was found to be fit enough for surgery, and later got the new smile her parents had dreamed of for her. But, for younger brother Rindra, the journey to a new smile would take a little longer. Operation Smile has provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for children with cleft lip conditions worldwide. For more information about our work or to find out how you can help, visit www.operationsmile.org. 28.What do most people think of cleft lip in Madagascar? A.It is incurable. B.It is normal. C.It is unavoidable. D.It is unlucky. 29.What kept the couple from being scared of their children’s situation? A.Their relative’s experience. B.Their children’s smile. C.Their love for their children. D.The advertisement they saw. 30.What should be done just before deciding on the surgery according to the text? A.Paying for the surgery. B.Staying in hospital. C.Having a health check. D.Seeking for a doctor. 31.What is the main purpose of the information in the last paragraph? A.For donations. B.For copyright. C.For commitment. D.For clarification. D Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees. In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities. They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity! Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.” 32.Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research? A.To grow more trees. B.To protect plant diversity. C.To reduce tree losses. D.To predict forest disappearance. 33.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research? A.Its theoretical basis. B.Its key procedures. C.Its scientific evidence. D.Its usual difficulties. 34.What does the finding suggest about the plant materials? A.The hormone levels affect their rigidity. B.They are better than naturally grown plants. C.Their cells’shapes mainly rely on their density. D.Their growth speed determines their characteristics. 35.Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain? A.It uses new biological materials in lab experiments. B.It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth. C.It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry. D.It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products. A paid internship (带薪实习) is a job often in your chosen field of work that offers a salary and is combined with training in your field. Paid internships are common for college students, who may work part-time during the school year and full-time during the vacation. The duration of the internship is not fixed. 36 Sometimes, it can last for a year or two as knowledge increases. Certain fields may require that you obtain internship experience in advance before getting a license. 37 Students might seek out paid internships to increase their chances of getting hired in their chosen career. A few paid internships may be completely unrelated to jobs you might want to be in but are attractive because they’re fun or have flexible scheduling. 38 They allow you to make some money while learning more about the jobs you might later apply for. In addition, engaging in a paid internship allows you to establish connections with professionals and peers within your industry. These networking opportunities can prove invaluable in the future. Some work opportunities are known as partially paid internships. These typically offer a stipend (生活津贴) or a fixed and regular payment that is less than a standard salary. Stipends range greatly and may include housing as part of their offer. 39 Paid internships have the potential to lead to permanent employment. 40 Because the transition from an intern to a full-time employee depends on several aspects, including the intern’s performance, organizational needs, and the availability of suitable positions. A.Not all internships are paid. B.However, this outcome is not guaranteed. C.There are many advantages of paid internships. D.Usually the money offers just enough to live on. E.It can be of short duration, lasting only several months. F.This is common in the teaching field and many scientific fields. G.Moreover, paid internships tend to attract a broader pool of applicants. On my way back home I was stopped at traffic lights by some people who asked for help. Having followed 18 years of conservation efforts, staff members from the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy reached a milestone this year — the first baby mountain bongo was born in the wild. Native 57 equatorial forests, the mountain bongo is the largest and most colorful of the forest antelopes. The species 58 (see) a dramatic decline in numbers in the last few decades from 59 estimated population of 25, 000 to less than 100. It was mostly humans who caused its population to decrease 60 (dramatic). Now the Conservancy is making efforts in partnership with the Kenyan government to help the mountain bongo through one 61 (create) breeding (饲养) and rewilding program. “Due to the massive decline, we 62 (leave) with less than 100 of the species in the wild. The mountain bongo is only found in Kenya and its decline in this area therefore means its decline in the world. That explains 63 taking immediate action here is so urgent,” Robert Aruho from the Conservancy said. He added that 64 (enable) the animals to adapt to life in the wild, they had taken a series of measures. As she turned the corner, she called back over her shoulder. “Zac, PLEASE. We’re going to miss it!” They were walking from their hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Zac was dragging behind. It was hot and his bag was heavy, but Steer kept up the pace — they’d be left behind otherwise. “My stomach hurts!” Zac’s voice came from too far behind her. She turned, impatient. “I know, but we really need to keep going, OK?” “OK …but it really hurts …” She turned to keep walking, assuming that if she kept up the pace he’d speed it up, too. She felt bad. Her nine-year-old son was rightfully uncomfortable under his backpack and the hot sun during a long walk, and a stomach ache on top of that couldn’t be pleasant. Still, they needed to make this bus to Ho Chi Min City. He’d be able to rest once we sat down. She sped up as they neared the bus stop, eyes searching the platforms until they landed with relief on their bus. She turned to see Zac dragging himself up the sidewalk, leaving her pack on the ground before walking back toward him. She took his bag off so she could carry it the rest of the way. “Does it still hurt?” asked Steer. He nodded. “I don’t feel good.” Steer handed Zac some water and told him he would feel better if they got on the bus and she carried their backpacks to the bus, leaving them in the pile with the others while she searched her pocket for their bus tickets. On the bus and in their seats, she handed Zac the water bottle one more time. He leaned his head on her shoulder, closing his eyes. Suddenly, Zac doubled over, vomiting onto his feet. “Oh no — hold on!” she moved quickly to get him a bag to vomit (呕吐) in, saving his feet and the floor from some of the mess. He looked up, apologetic, and Steer felt the eyes of everyone on the bus on them. “Don’t worry about it honey, it doesn’t matter — do you feel better? Here — have some water.” As she twisted off the cap, Zac began to throw up again — only this time, there was no bag. Moving quickly to help him, Steer knocked over the two-liter water bottle. She felt flurried (慌乱) as the bus attendant came up to see what was happening. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Learning about Zac’s serious conditions, all other passengers did what Steer unexpected. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null 16选择性必修第四册暑期学习成果阶段检测卷 英 语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1.What does the man say about the film museum? M: Well, I think about my job, which is to look into space, look at planets and discover what knowledge they offer. W: Yes, but what are your private thoughts about what you see? M: That is a good question. What is your name? W: Jenny. M: Well, Jenny, even after a quarter of a century in this job, I am still filled with wonder when I look at planets and stars. W: Do you wonder whether there is life there? M: It depends. When I look at Mars, Venus or the planet I am viewing today, the Moon, I am pretty sure there is nothing living there. Further away…well, maybe. W: At my school, we had a competition to draw what we thought a space creature would look like. M: Ha-ha. That is fun, as long as it doesn’t scare you too much. Because the fact is, scientists and explorers have never found evidence that such things exist. W: Oh, I see. M: So, Jenny, what will you and your friends be doing next? Going back to school, or going home? W: I think we are going to have our lunch at the cafe here. M: Would you like to look through my telescope before you go? W: Ooh, yes please. 18.What do we know about the Burj Khalifa? A.It is an ancient man-made building. B.It is the tallest man-made building. 【答案】24.A 25.A 26.B 27.D 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段“Every morning the family would pack their belongings and move from quarry (采石场) to quarry, where they began a day’s work.(每天早上,这家人都会收拾好行李,从一个采石场搬到另一个采石场,开始一天的工作)”可知,Lal每天和家人一起在采石场做苦工。故选A。 25. 根据第三段中“Recalling the fateful day in 2001 when Satyarthi was conducting a gathering in his village — an education march part of the “Save Childhood Movement” — Lal says Satyarthi spotted him carrying heavy stones.(Lal回忆起2001年那个灾难性的日子,当时Satyarthi正在他的村子里组织一场集会——“拯救童年运动”的一部分教育游行——拉尔说,Satyarthi发现他扛着沉重的石头)”以及最后一段“Since Lal graduated as a lawyer in 2018, he has been working with Satyarthi on cases and practical assistance, and in turn, giving hope to many more children.(自从Lal于2018年以律师身份毕业以来,他一直与Satyarthi一起处理案件和实际援助,反过来又给更多的孩子带来希望)”可推知,Satyarthi最有可能是反童工运动的活动家,儿童权益的倡导者。故选A。 26. 根据第四段““I vividly recall Satyarthi asking my parents whether I went to school. But not my parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents had ever been to school. They looked at him with a puzzled look because a nomadic (游牧的) lifestyle was the only one we knew. Work was all we were taught to do,” the 27-year-old lawyer Lal shares.(“我清楚地记得Satyarthi提问我父母我是否上学。但我的父母、祖父母甚至曾祖父母都没有上过学。他们不解地看着他,因为我们只知道游牧的生活方式。工作是我们唯一被教导要做的事情,”27岁的律师Lal分享道)”可推知,当Satyarthi问到他们的孩子是否上学时,Lal的父母是感到困惑的。故选B。 27.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“I was really grateful that I was given a chance at a new life which thousands of children dreamed of. 【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.A 【导语】本文为一篇记叙文,讲述了一对夫妇为患有唇裂的孩子求医,带着他们参加“微笑行动”免费医疗活动,并成功完成手术的故事。 28.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“In Madagascar, many families have never seen a cleft lip before, so it’s a condition often greeted with fear and misfortune in some rural communities.(在马达加斯加,许多家庭以前从未见过唇裂,所以在一些农村社区,这种情况经常伴随着恐惧和不幸)”可知,在马达加斯加,人们认为唇裂是不幸的。故选D。 29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“However, the news of Lanto and Rindra’s cleft lip wasn’t much of a shock for Rolland and Adeline because Rolland’s cousin—a man in his fifties—had lived his entire adult life with an untreated cleft lip.(然而,兰托和林德拉唇裂的消息对罗兰和艾德琳来说并没有太大的震惊,因为罗兰的表弟——一个50多岁的男人——成年后一直患有未治疗的唇裂)”可知,罗兰和艾德琳这对夫妇不是很害怕唇裂,因为他们的亲戚也有类似的经历。故选A。 30.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“After a thorough medical evaluation by medical volunteers, Lanto was found to be fit enough for surgery, and later got the new smile her parents had dreamed of for her.(经过医疗志愿者的全面医疗评估,兰托被发现适合做手术,后来她得到了父母梦寐以求的新笑容)”可推知,确定手术之前要进行全面的医疗检查和评估。故选C。 31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Operation Smile has provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for children with cleft lip conditions worldwide. 【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.D 【导语】本文是新闻报道。文章主要介绍麻省理工学院的研究人员为了减少树木损失而进行的一项研究。 32.推理判断题。根据第一段“Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. (运用了which引导非限制性定语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Natasha Steer and her son Zac were about to miss their bus. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 She felt flurried (慌乱) as the bus attendant came up to see what was happening. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Learning about Zac’s serious conditions, all other passengers did what Steer unexpected. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 She felt flurried (慌乱) as the bus attendant came up to see what was happening. Fearing that they might not let them stay on the bus if they thought he was sick, Steer explained to the attendant that maybe it was motion sickness that made Zac vomit, regretting to him and the passengers for making the floor of the bus dirty. However, the attendant was very warmhearted and asked them move up to the front. She supported the kid into Steer’s shoulder and told him to close his eyes or stare straight ahead so he wouldn’t get sick. But it didn’t make sense. Learning about Zac’s serious conditions, all other passengers did what Steer unexpected. They begged the driver to rush Zac to the nearest hospital, which made Steer’s welling up in her eyes. Despite kicking against the rules, the driver eventually accepted their request and sent Steer and her son to the nearest hospital. On arrival of the nearest hospital, Zac was diagnosed with food poisoning and was given appropriate cure. The kid was safe, making her relieved a lot. She was very grateful to the attendant and the passengers on the bus and a great warmth filled her that day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①担忧,害怕:fear/ worry about/ be afraid ②解释:explain/ account for/ make clear ③乞求:beg/ require/ demand ④冲:rush/ dash 情绪类 ①宽慰,松了口气:make her relieved a lot/relieve her a good deal ②感激的:grateful/ thankful 【点睛】【高分句型1】Fearing that they might not let them stay on the bus if they thought he was sick, Steer explained to the attendant that maybe it was motion sickness that made Zac vomit, regretting to him and the passengers for making the floor of the bus dirty.
