This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat’s quick thinking may have just saved her babies. In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital bolding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens. The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren’t able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, “We consulted with vets (兽医) and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited.” Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes. When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger. Without the mother cat’s help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood. As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother’s love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy. 4. Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital? A. To beg for food. B. To get her babies treated. C. To express thanks. D. To give birth to her babies. 5. How did the doctors help the baby cat? A. They built them a home. B. They adopted all of them. C. They operated on them immediately. D. They gave them right medicine. 6. What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers? A. Their physical state. B. Their eating habit. C. Their appearance. D. Their behavior. 7. What can we learn from the story? A. cat has nine lives. B. One good turn deserves another. C. Love makes a difference. D. God helps those who help themselves. B 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段“The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time.(母猫哭了很长时间,来寻求帮助)”以及第三段“After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, ‘We consulted with vets (兽医) and gave medicine as described.’(医生看了小猫之后,发现它们患上了眼部感染。其中一名医生回忆说:‘我们咨询了兽医,并按照描述给他们开了药。’)”可知,母猫带者刚出生不久的小猫去医院是为了让人们帮她治疗小猫的病。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“One of the doctors recalls, ‘We consulted with vets (兽医) and gave medicine as described.’(其中一名医生回忆说:‘我们咨询了兽医,并按照描述给他们开了药。’)” 根据第四段“Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger.(因为它们在两到三周大之前都是盲的,几乎是聋的,所以母猫必须保护它们不受任何威胁或危险)”可知,小猫刚出生时的身体状态让它们必须依靠猫妈妈生活。故选A项。 根据文章内容,结合最后一段“As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother’s love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.(从土耳其的猫妈妈身上可以看出,母亲的爱和保护是无止境的。不管妈妈是人还是猫,妈妈们总是会照顾他们的孩子,确保他们的安全和健康)”可推知,这个故事中是母猫的爱让小猫活了下去,所以无论是人还是猫,他们对孩子的爱可以改变一切。故选C项。 C When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well. Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).” The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need — and what they don’t. However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination. “We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well - and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred acres(英亩), so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.” Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment. 8. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Challenges. B. Features. C. Benefits. D. Solutions. 9. What particular usage is the drone designed for? A. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides. B. Helping to determine the chemicals needed. C. Assisting to monitor the state of crops. D. Measuring the areas of the fields. 10. What technical issue of the drone shall be tackled? A. Its camera capacity. B. Its data collection ability. C. Its durability and control. D. Its material and efficiency. 11. What can best describe the students? A. Disciplined and realistic. B. Experienced and reliable. C. Humble and reserved. D. Responsible and creative. C 9. B 10. C 11. 根据划线词句子“We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).(我们想帮助小农户,其中一个perks就是不用把钱花在化肥和杀虫剂上)”可知,不用把钱花在化肥和杀虫剂上这应该是好处,益处,由此猜测perks意为“好处,益处”,和C选项“Benefits”同义。 根据第三段“The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need - and what they don’t.( 他们的想法是设计和建造一架无人机,它可以拍摄田地的视频图像,以确定生产最好作物所需的条件,同时节省资金,并通过减少水径流中的污染物来保护环境。理想情况下,获得的数据将帮助农民更好地确定他们需要什么化学品,不需要什么化学品)”可知,无人机的具体用途是帮助确定所需的化学品。故选B。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.(然而,为这个项目找到合适的设备是一个挑战,首先是团队将为这种特殊用途设计什么样的无人机。Samantha说,她研究了无人机的耐用性和控制能力,以帮助做出正确的决定)”可知,制作无人机遇到了挑战,需要解决无人机的耐用性和控制能力。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段““We really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).” (“我们真的很想帮助农业和农业。这对美国和我们的经济都非常重要,”Blayde说。“我们想帮助小农民,其中一个好处就是不用把钱花在化肥和杀虫剂上。” )”可推知,他们是有责任心的;再根据第三段“The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need — and what they don’t.(他们的想法是设计和建造一架无人机,它可以拍摄田地的视频图像,以确定生产最好作物所需的条件,同时节省资金,并通过减少水径流中的污染物来保护环境。理想情况下,获得的数据将帮助农民更好地确定他们需要什么化学品,不需要什么化学品)”可推知,他们是有创造力的。故选D。 D Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18. The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States. Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age. So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences. The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older. 12. Old people may be happier probably because _________. A. their children have grown up B. they don’t have to work every day C. they can do whatever they like best D. they are most likely satisfied with life 13. According to the survey, when will adults feel most stressful? A. In their twenties. B. In their fifties. C. In their seventies. D. In their eighties. 14. What may make Arthur Stone a bit surprised? A. Women usually live longer than men. B. Middle-age men mostly are very rich. C. Old people usually have a better sleep. D. Most of old people can’t sleep well at night. 15. Which of the following may be the topic of this passage? A. The difference between men and women. B. Old people’s feeling of happiness. C. The young people and the old people. D. The connection of sleep and happiness. 12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. D Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? D.
