Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.
1. Why are Oxford Street’s festive lights just on for 8 hours a day this year?
A. The public ask to turn off these lights.
B The quality of these lights is not good.
C. The government wants to save energy
D. The country expects to differ from previous years.
2. In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit Of Christmas?
A. Oxford Street. B. Kew Gardens. C. Regent Street. D. Covent Garden.
3. What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden?
A. Take a shower.
B. See snow every day.
C. Pick out the favourite lights.
D. Enjoy many different kinds of wines.

It all started with a post on social media. Returning home from the grocery store, then 25-year-old Simone Policano felt compelled to help the elderly in her neighbourhood to practise safer social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. With this in mind, she reached out to her friends via the social media, inquiring about existing volunteer opportunities in the state of New York. Unexpectedly, many responded to her post, expressing their interest to volunteer as well. As a result of that outreach, one of her friends, Liam Elkind joined Policano. They decided to start an initiative called Invisible Hands Deliver.
Just two days after conceiving(想出)the idea, Policano and Elkind had a website up and running. This site allowed the elderly and other at-risk individuals to make requests for groceries and prescription medicines to be delivered to them. Volunteers left the bags of groceries outside the doors. The webpage also included a call for volunteers, which gained more than 2,000 sign-ups within the first five days.
As the pandemic began to take its toll on New York in March 2020, Invisible Hands Deliver witnessed a massive outpouring of support from like-minded individuals in the community. Besides volunteering to deliver groceries for free, New Yorkers also reached out to translate the Invisible Hands flyers into over a dozen languages, enabling the organisation to reach out to more members of the community.
Following its success in New York and New Jersey, the organisation has expanded its operations to Philadelphia and there are plans to expand to other areas of the United States. Their acts of kindness have also inspired similar networks to sprout up worldwide. Invisible Hands Deliver is also supported by other organizations.
Helmed by a team of college students and recent graduates, Invisible Hands Deliver has shown that one is never too young to make a difference and give back to the community. In a time when the pandemic has forced people apart, the young are in a prime position to take advantage of technology and bridge the gap, bringing communities together.
4. Why did Simone Policano setup “Invisible Hands Deliver”?
A To practice outreach on the social media.
B. To bring volunteers of the same interest together.
C. To help the elderly with their daily chores contactlessly.
D. To sell groceries and prescription medicines to the lonely elderly.
5. What does the underlined phrase “take its toll” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Cause great damage. B. Reduce the impact.
C. Fill a huge gap. D. Recover slowly.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Invisible Hands Deliver has drawn wide attention.
B. People responded to Simon’s post in actively at the beginning.
C. Invisible Hands Deliver has existed in many areas of the United States.
D. Young people pull the elderly together when the pandemic pulls them apart.
7. What does the author want to convey through the passage?
A. Great minds think alike. B. All the people gather the fire.
C. Great things never come easy. D. Kill two birds with one stone.

The Guilford County Department of Public Health is hosting two rabies (狂犬病) clinics this month in honor of World Rabies Day on Sept. 28. The rabies vaccination (接种疫苗) will cost $5 per shot and will protect your pet for one calendar year. Dogs mustn’t get loose and cats must be kept in cages.
The State of North Carolina requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated. The health department recommends that other animals that have regular contact with humans, such as horses, should be vaccinated as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rabies virus causes approximately 55,000 human deaths worldwide each year, with most of the deaths occurring in children under 15.
The rabies virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. When an animal has rabies(or is rabid), the virus circulates throughout its body and is transmitted to other animals or humans through its saliva. The most commonly infected animals are raccoons (浣熊), bats, skunks, and foxes.
The best ways to keep your pet from becoming rabid are to keep it tied when in public, as unchained pets are easily exposed to wild animals. Feed your pet indoors if possible. Wild animals will break into your basement, outbuildings, or garage to seek food, so be sure the storage location you select for your pet food is secure. Moreover, do not try to touch, feed, or rescue wild animals. Do not pick up dead animals as the virus could still be present.
This year in Guilford County, the majority of the animal rabies cases have involved raccoons, with foxes in a very close second place. Guilford County has recorded fifteen cases of animal rabies thus far this year.
8. Which of the following is required to have a pet vaccinated for rabies in Guilford County?
A. Food for pets. B. A cage for dog.
C. Fee of five dollars. D. A permit for pets.
9. What does the underlined word “circulate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Spread. B. Cycle. C. Move. D. Pass.
10. Which of the following animals would most likely be a carrier of rabies?
A. A raccoon. B. A shark. C. A squirrel. D. A fox.
11. Which is a good recommendation for people to keep their animals free from rabies?
A. Feed your cat in the kitchen.
B. Allow your pets to go outdoors alone.
C. Let your dog run free at the local pavement.
D. Store your dog food in a container without lid.
C 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据第一段中的“The rabies vaccination (接种疫苗) will cost $5 per shot and will protect your pet for one calendar year.(狂犬病疫苗每次注射费用为5美元,可保护您的宠物一个日历年)”可知,在吉尔福德县给宠物注射狂犬疫苗需要付5美元。
根据画线词所在句“When an animal has rabies(or is rabid), the virus circulates throughout its body and is transmitted to other animals or humans through its saliva.(当动物患有狂犬病时,病毒会在其全身……,并通过唾液传播给其他动物或人类)”可推测出,病毒传播到体内之后,会在身体内循环,然后通过唾液传播。
根据第三段中的“The most commonly infected animals are raccoons (浣熊), bats, skunks, and foxes.(最常见的感染动物是浣熊、蝙蝠、臭鼬和狐狸)”和第五段中的“This year in Guilford County, the majority of the animal rabies cases have involved raccoons, with foxes in a very close second place.(今年在吉尔福德县,大多数动物狂犬病病例都涉及浣熊,狐狸紧随其后)”可推知,浣熊最有可能是狂犬病携带者。故选A。
故选A。

Imagine being able to go to your local park and pick some tomatoes, potatoes or even bananas to take home for dinner. Sounds too good to be true, right? For residents of Andernach, a German city, it’s not just a Utopian dream — it’s their reality. In 2010, Andernach began its “edible city” project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. Every year a new type of plant is introduced. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012 saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties. The town’s motto (座右铭) is, “Picking is encouraged — help yourself!”
It’s a community effort, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialize as well as to learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting food. “I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need. The only thing is you have to be quick once the fruits are ripe or they’ll all be gone!” said a local historian.
Andernach may be the first, but it isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, an EU-funded project connecting green urban food initiatives (倡议) around the world. Other edible cities include Carthage in Tunisia, Havana in Cuba and Šempeter-Vrtojba in Slovenia. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr. Ina Säumel, Principal Investigator of the Edible Cities Network, called it, “a unique opportunity to invite researchers and practitioners (从业人员) of Edible City Solutions to the same table and unite theory with practice”.
Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to create “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities”. It is a response to the pressures of climate change, and a cause for hope.
12 What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The process of Andernach’s growth.
B. The green food project in Andernach.
C. Methods of planting vegetables in Europe.
D. The popularity of Andernach’s city design.
13. What is the attitude of the local historian mentioned in paragraph 2 towards the project?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent.
C. Positive. D. Negative.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Green urban food has drawn more attention.
B. German rural areas will follow the trend too.
C. Asia will join the Edible Cities Network soon.
D. Edible cities hold meetings on a regular basis.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Start a Green Food Campaign Now
B. Gain Easy Access to German Food
C. Quick Response to Climate Change
D. An Incredible “Edible City” Initiative
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第一段中“In 2010, Andernach began its “edible city” project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. Every year a new type of plant is introduced. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012 saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties.”(2010年,安德纳赫开始了“可食用城市”项目,在市中心周围的公共绿地种植了101种西红柿。
根据第二段中的“I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need.”(我经常顺便去摘一些我在家缺的草药。
根据第三段“Andernach may be the first, but it isn’t the only edible city. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文以及最后一段“Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to create “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities”. It is a response to the pressures of climate change, and a cause for hope.”(“可食城市网络”的最终目标是打造“更绿色、更可食、最重要的是更宜居的城市”。

Four Common Communication Mistakes
It can be embarrassing to make mistakes in communication. For example, if you send an email with a grammatical error, you can end up looking unprofessional. ___16___ For example, they can push away colleagues or customers. Now let's look at some common communication mistakes.
___17___
Spelling, tone and grammatical mistakes can make you look careless. That's why it's essential to check all of your communications before you send them. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see errors in your own work. So consider asking a colleague to look over key documents before you distribute them.
You always deliver bad news by email.
Would you announce something bad to others by email? If you did, you could upset them! Written communication channels don't allow you to soften difficult messages with non-verbal(非言语的)clues, such as body language. ___18___ So if you need to deliver bad news, do this in person.
You tend to avoid difficult conversations.
At some point, you will need to give negative feedback(反馈意见). It may seem wise to avoid such conversation. ___19___ For instance, you may find that a small problem you “let go” soon grows into a big one. Preparation is the key to handling difficult conversations. Learn to give clear, actionable feedback.
You are reacting instead of responding.
Have you ever shouted at a colleague in upset, or sent a brief and unfriendly reply to an email, without thinking your point through? If so, you're likely to have reacted emotionally, instead of responding calmly. The kind of emotional reaction can damage your reputation. ___20___
A. You fail to have your work edited.
B. But this can cause further problems.
C. Difficult conversations can cause upset.
D. You assume others understand your messages.
E. You may give others the impression of lacking self-control.

由上文“It can be embarrassing to make mistakes in communication. For example, if you send an email with a grammatical error, you can end up looking unprofessional.(在交流中犯错误可能会让人尴尬。例如,如果你发送了一封语法错误的电子邮件,你最终可能看起来不专业。) ”可知,上文提到邮件中的语法错误会给人留下不专业的印象,且下文进一步说明其他错误交流方式会造成更严重的后果。G项Other communication mistakes can have more serious consequences.(其他沟通错误可能会产生更严重的后果。)
由下文“Spelling, tone and grammatical mistakes can make you look careless. That's why it's essential to check all of your communications before you send them. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see errors in your own work. So consider asking a colleague to look over key documents before you distribute them.(拼写、语气和语法错误会让你看起来很粗心。这就是为什么在发送之前检查所有通信至关重要的原因。有时,很难看到自己工作中的错误。因此,请考虑让同事在分发关键文档之前先查看这些文档。)”可知,本段主要陈述了一种常见的交流中的错误行为:在将文本发出去之前未对其进行校对。A项You fail to have your work edited.(你的作品没有被编辑。) 故选A项。
由上文“Would you announce something bad to others by email? If you did, you could upset them! Written communication channels don't allow you to soften difficult messages with non-verbal(非言语的)clues, such as body language.(你会通过电子邮件向别人宣布一些不好的事情吗?如果你这么做了,你可能会让他们不高兴!书面沟通渠道不允许你用非语言线索(如肢体语言)软化困难的信息。)”可知,这里主要陈述了书面沟通渠道传达负面消息的缺点。F项And they don't allow you to immediately deal with strong emotions.(它们不允许你立即处理强烈的情绪。)
根据段落标题“You tend to avoid difficult conversations.(你常常会避免困难的谈话。)”可知,本段阐述你会避免困难谈话,由上文“At some point, you will need to give negative feedback(反馈意见). It may seem wise to avoid such conversation. (在某个时候,你需要给出负面的反馈。避免这样的谈话似乎是明智的。)”可知,有时我们应给出负面的反馈,似乎避免困难的谈话是明智的,B项But this can cause further problems.(但这可能会导致进一步的问题。)
由上文“Have you ever shouted at a colleague in upset, or sent a brief and unfriendly reply to an email, without thinking your point through? If so, you're likely to have reacted emotionally, instead of responding calmly. The kind of emotional reaction can damage your reputation.(你有没有在心烦意乱的时候对同事大喊大叫,或者在没有考虑清楚你的观点的情况下给一封邮件发了一个简短而不友好的回复?如果是这样的话,你可能会有情绪上的反应,而不是平静地回应。这种情绪反应会损害你的声誉。)”可知,有时我们回复只是在释放我们的情绪。E项You may give others the impression of lacking self-control.(你可能会给别人留下缺乏自制力的印象。)

Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young boy talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young boy would be happy with something else.
“No, I have to have roses,” he said, “My mum was badly sick last year and there isn’t much time left for her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Tom was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a hospital nearby.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Tom stopped his car and followed the young boy. The moment Tom went into the hospital room, he saw a woman lying on the bed unconscious. The boy held the flowers tightly and sobbed, “Dear mum, I love you. I bring your favorite roses. But now how I regret I didn’t tell you I love you so much. ”Tom came up and patted the boy on his shoulder, saying that his company and love is the best gift. But he suddenly realized that he hadn’t visited his mum for a long time. The burden of guilt weighed on his mind.
Tom went into the car with a deep sense of shame. His mother’s home wasn’t far from here, but he hadn’t seen her for too long a time. He didn’t have a talk and say how much he loved her for so long a time. Reflecting on what he had planned, Tom felt a flush of shame burning his face. He turned the car and drove towards the road quickly to the flower shop. He asked the girl to give back the flowers because he wanted to send them personally to his mum. He could hardly wait to knock at the door and give a warm hug to his Mum.

B. The quality of these lights is not good.
C. The government wants to save energy
D. The country expects to differ from previous years.
2. In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit Of Christmas?
A. Oxford Street. B. Kew Gardens. C. Regent Street. D. Covent Garden.
3. What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden?
A. Take a shower.
B. See snow every day.
C. Pick out the favourite lights.
D. Enjoy many different kinds of wines.
B
A. To practice outreach on the social media.

8 Which of the following is required to have a pet vaccinated for rabies in Guilford County?
A A raccoon. B. A shark. C. A squirrel. D. A fox.
11. Which is a good recommendation for people to keep their animals free from rabies?
A. Feed your cat in the kitchen.
B. Allow your pets to go outdoors alone.
C. Let your dog run free at the local pavement.
D. Store your dog food in a container without lid.
