South America has a long and interesting coastline. When it comes to beaches, there are some excellent options to be found across the continent.
Sancho Beach
This beach is an amazing stretch of sand with peaceful waters. The clear waters are perfect for swimming but it is difficult to access. It can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the rocky hillsides on each end, so it isn’t particularly good for younger children or people who are physically challenged.
Vichayito Beach
Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora, this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones. A little further out, the waves pick up, making for fine surfing and windsurfing surroundings, while the charming village offers nice accommodation.
Copacabana Beach
The cold water here means it isn’t an ideal swimming location, but there are good spots for surfing and windsurfing. Various water activities make it a great beach. Visit early, especially in the busy tourist seasons, not only to avoid crowds, but also to gain admittance — visitors will be turned away once the park reaches peak capacity.
Jericoacoara Beach
Located near the city center, this beach is very popular among surfers thanks to its great waves. It isn’t too rough to swim for experienced swimmers, although a slightly rocky seafloor means you should be careful. With large crowds of people, the best time to visit is sunset-arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
1. What may make Sancho Beach difficult to reach?
A. The great waves. B. Its unique location.
C. Lack of boat services. D. Large crowds of tourists.
2. Which beach is the most ideal place for young children to swim?

The Music Educator Award, this year, went to Annie Ray, an orchestra(管弦乐队)director at Annandale High School. She was recognized for her efforts to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with disabilities.Ray got to attend the awards ceremony in Los Angeles and bring home a $10,000 prize.
Ray created the Crescendo Orchestra for students with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as a parent orchestra that teaches nearly 200 caregivers a year to play the same instrument as their child.Ray also works with a local charity to give damaged instruments a second life in her classroom.
The orchestra is about much more than just making music. The most important is to give students a chance to develop their cooperation skills, make mistakes and learn the art of refining something.Ray pushes her students to be brave, go outside their comfort zone and realize they have to learn how to make bad sounds before learning how to make good sounds. And they teach her a lot in return.” They changed my educational philosophy.I understand what it truly means to meet a student where they’re at and apply that elsewhere,” she said.
The warm reception on the ceremony was meaningful.Actually, not many people understand what exactly music educators do or how much their work matters. While her administration is supportive, that lack of understanding is a problem facing the profession in general.Another is resources. She says her school “desperately” needs new instruments. She will use some of her prize money to buy more.
Ray also plans to put some of the money towards an ongoing scholarship for students who want to pursue music when they graduate. She knows of several, those particularly interested in music, and aims to offer financial support needed to realize their musical dreams” It is hard but truly satisfying,” Ray said.“And there’s nothing else like it for them.”
4. What can we learn about Ray from the first two paragraphs?
A. She hosted the award ceremony. B. She brought music to more people.
C. She gave away instruments to the poor. D. She founded a local charity for children.
5. What do students benefit most from the orchestra?
A. They acquire in-depth musical knowledge. B. They make friends with the like-minded.
C. They gain personal growth from playing music. D. They improve their connections with educators.
6. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A. The reception on the ceremony. B. Importance of music education.
C. Challenges for music educators. D. Plans to obtain resources.
7. What does Ray find satisfying according to the last paragraph?
A. Winning a scholarship. B. Developing interest in music.
C. Making musical achievements. D. Transforming dreams into reality.

The human body possesses an efficient defense system to battle with flu viruses. The immune system protects against the attack of harmful microbes (微生物) by producing chemicals called antibodies, which are programmed to destroy a specific type of microbe. They travel in the blood and search the body for invaders (入侵者). When they find an invasive microbe, antibodies attack and destroy any cell that contains the virus. However, flu viruses can be a terrible enemy. Even if your body successfully fights against the viruses, with their ability to evolve rapidly, your body may have no protection or immunity from the new ones.
Your body produces white blood cells to protect you against infectious diseases. Your body can detect invading microbes in your bloodstream because they carry antigens in their proteins. White blood cells in your immune system, such as T cells, can sense antigens in the viruses in your cells. Once your body finds an antigen, it takes immediate action in many different ways. For example, T cells produce more antibodies, call in cells that eat microbes, and destroy cells that are infected with a virus.
One of the best things about the immune system is that it will always remember a microbe it has fought before and know just how to fight it again in the future. Your body can learn to fight so well that your immune system can completely destroy a virus before you feel sick at all.
However, even the most cautious people can become infected. Fortunately, medical scientists have developed vaccines (疫苗), which are weakened or dead flu viruses that enter a person’s body before the person gets sick. These viruses cause the body to produce antibodies to attack and destroy the strong viruses that may invade during flu season.
8. Why does flu pose a threat to the immune system?
A. Microbes contain large quantities of viruses.
B. Antibodies are too weak to attack flu viruses.
C. The body has few effective ways to tackle flu.
D. It’s hard to keep pace with the evolution of viruses.
9. What does the underlined word “antigens” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. The cell protecting your body from viruses.
B. The matter serving as the indicator of viruses.
C. The antibodies helping to fight against viruses.
D. The substance destroying cells infected with viruses.
10. How do vaccines defend the body against the flu viruses?
A They strengthen the body’s immune system.
B. They battle against weakened or dead viruses.
C. They help produce antibodies to wipe out viruses.
D. They expose the body to viruses during flu season.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Antibodies Save Our Health. B. Vaccines Are Of Great Necessity.
C. Infectious Flu Viruses Are Around. D. Human Body Fights Against Flu Viruses.
D
Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.”
12. Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research?
A. To grow more trees.
B. To protect plant diversity.
C. To reduce tree losses.
D. To predict forest disappearance.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research?
A. Its theoretical basis.
B. Its key procedures.
C. Its scientific evidence.
D. Its usual difficulties.
14. What does the finding suggest about the plant materials?
A. The hormone levels affect their rigidity.
B. They are better than naturally grown plants.
C. Their cells’shapes mainly rely on their density.
D. Their growth speed determines their characteristics.
15. Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain?
A. It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.
B. It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.
C. It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry.
D. It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my dear. Come on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”
From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice. By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.

【答案】1. B 2. B 3. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇应用文,文章主要介绍了美洲大陆的一些海滩。
【1题详解】

A. They strengthen the body’s immune system.
B. They battle against weakened or dead viruses.
C. They help produce antibodies to wipe out viruses.
D. They expose the body to viruses during flu season.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

D To predict forest disappearance.
D It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.

【答案】On the exam day, a fear of failure upset her stomach. Aliya's heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs. Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew. By the end of the exam, Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had aced it, but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. It wasn't just a grade. It was a testament to her hard work, her teacher's unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself. Aliya left the room with her head held high, no longer the student who dreaded math, but a young woman who had conquered her fears and believed in her abilities.
