Eugene O'Neill, who was born in 1888, in New York, was a leading American drama writer and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His father was a successful touring actor. Because of that, Eugene spent his early childhood in hotels, on trains, and backstage. Although later in his life he grew to hate his father for not giving him security in his early years and a loving, comfortable family, he had the theater in his blood.
As a student, O'Neill went to boarding schools but spent the summers in a moderate house his family owned. He left Princeton University in 1907, only about one year after he entered it, to start what he later called his real education in "life experience". At the age of 24, he was hired as a reporter and poetry column writer for the New London Telegraph.
O'Neill didn't cut a figure in playwriting until the summer of 1916. Before that, he had written awkward plays that were hardly accepted by the mainstream of American theater. While O'Neill was only one of those whose plays were produced by the theater, he led the group to success because of his contribution within the next few years. Between 1916 and 1920, the theater produced all of O'Neill's one-act sea plays. By the time his first full-length play, Beyond the Horizon, was produced on Broadway on February 2, 1920 at the Morosco Theater, the young playwright already had a small reputation.
Theater critics spoke highly of Beyond the Horizon for its tragic realism. The play brought O'Neill more public attention, as well as his first Pulitzer Prize, apart from which he won another three for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day's Journey into Night. Over the next two decades, O'Neill continued to gain reputation nationally and globally. He became the most widely produced dramatist after Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw.

I once asked people what it meant to be a good listener. The typical response was a blank stare.
Of course, technology plays a role. People find phone calls interrupting them, preferring text or wordless emoji. Besides, schools and colleges rarely offer classes or activities that teach careful listening. The loud unpleasant mixture of sounds of modern life also stops us from listening.
Generally, listening goes beyond simply hearing what people say. It also involves paying attention to how they say it and what they do while they are saying it, in what context, and how what they say is related to you. It's not about merely holding your peace while someone else holds forth. Quite the opposite.
Good listeners ask good questions. They engage in exploring the topic, not to divert attention. There are curious questions like “Wouldn't you agree...?" or "Don't you think...?” These questions have strong tendencies. They will greatly influence the other person to change his or her view. And you'd better stay away from some personal questions like “What do you do for a living?" or "What part of town do you live in?” Just try to find out what excites people. Ask about the last movie they saw or for the story behind a piece of jewelry they're wearing. Also good are expansive questions, such as, “If you could spend a month, where would you go?”
The reward of good listening will certainly be more interesting conversations. Researchers have found that attentive listeners receive more information from speakers, even when they don't ask any questions. We are, each of us, the sum of what we attend to in life. The gentle voice of a mother and the criticism of a boss both ultimately form and shape us. And to listen poorly, selectively or not at all limits your understanding of the world and prevents you from becoming the best you can be.
8. What's the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. The great influence of technology. B. The factors causing fewer good listeners.
C. The lack of classes to teach listening. D. The two opposite sides of modern life.
9. Which question may a good listener ask?
A. Isn't it wise to choose a foreign university?
B. Are you satisfied with your present salary?
C. How can you afford such a costly house?
D. What do you think of Eminem's new song?
10. What does the author probably agree with as for listening?
A. Asking adequate questions is necessary.
B. Keeping silent is of greater benefit to both sides.
C. Listening attentively will be rewarded a great deal.
D. Listening selectively will bring limitless possibilities.
11. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. The Art of Asking Questions
B. Take Action Against Technology
C. Bad Listening Leads to Failure
D. Try to Be a Good Listener
D
A four-wheeled pod shaped like a space capsule on riverside roads trundles slowly among people who run, walk, cycle and lead dogs. At a maximum speed of 10 mph, the car beeps as it moves regularly between the Inter Continental Hotel in the west of the peninsula and apartment blocks in the east.
The biggest surprise about the vehicle is not its futuristic appearance but how it is controlled. While current safety rules require a human to monitor the vehicle’s performance and step in to avoid crashes, the pod largely drives itself. It is one of several experiments worldwide aimed at exploring how autonomous vehicles might mesh with city transport systems. All are looking at how a technology being developed mainly for US highways can work in the more confined, chaotic space of city streets.
At the heart of these efforts is an attempt to work out whether driverless vehicles will ease or worsen the impact that private car travel has had on many cities following the highway-building craze of the mid-20th century.
Some fear the technology could prompt more journeys by private motor vehicles rather than more space-efficient public transport. If the technology provides comfortable, stress-free, private journeys, it might also prompt people to commute daily from further afield, generating yet more traffic.
Experts concerned about such impacts on behaviour argue it is vital that the roll-out of autonomous vehicle technology goes hand-in-hand with a rethink of how it is used
David Begg, a former chairman of the UK’s Commission for Integrated Transport, accepts that autonomous vehicles will use road space more efficiently but says the problem remains that cars take up too much space for the people they carry. On average, most vehicles contain little more than one person — the driver.
“There’s no doubt autonomous vehicles can allow us to squeeze more vehicles into a given amount of capacity because they’re bumper-to-bumper and side-by-side,” prof Begg says. “Unless we can increase vehicle occupancy up from 1.1, we’re moving too much fresh air and not enough people.”
12. What do we know about driverless vehicles?
A. Driverless vehicle travels at an average speed of 10 mph.
B. Driverless vehicle drives itself to a great degree.
C. Driverless vehicles’ appearance is the same as common cars.
D. Most driverless vehicles contain more than one person.
13. What does the underlined word "confined" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. deserted B. tidy. C. straight. D. narrow.
14. What is the David Begg's attitude to the future of driverless vehicles?
A. Disapproving. B. concerned C. Positive. D. Sympathetic.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.

根据第一段中“His father was a successful touring actor. Because of that, Eugene spent his early childhood in hotels, on trains, and backstage.”(他的父亲是一位成功的巡回演出演员。 以及“he had the theater in his blood”(他的血液中有戏剧元素)。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“He left Princeton University in 1907, only about one year after he entered it, to start what he later called his real education in life experience.”(1907年,他进入普林斯顿大学,大约一年后就离开了普林斯顿大学,开始他后来所谓的“生活经历”真正的教育。)
根据第三段中“Before that, he had written awkward plays that were hardly accepted by the mainstream of American theater.”(在那之前,他写过一些尴尬的戏剧,而这些戏剧几乎没有被美国戏剧界所接受。)
根据倒数第二段中“By the time his first full-length play, Beyond the Horizon, was produced on Broadway on February 2, 1920 at the Morosco Theater, the young playwright already had a small reputation.”(1920年2月2日,在百老汇制作了他的第一部剧作Beyond the Horizon时,这位年轻的剧作家就已经小有名气。)。

所以“What do you think of Eminem's new song?(你觉得艾米纳姆的新歌怎么样?)”

Experts concerned about such impacts on behaviour argue it is vital that the roll-out of autonomous vehicle technology goes hand-in-hand with a rethink of how it is used.
B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.
B 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第二段第二句“While current safety rules require a human to monitor the vehicle’s performance and step in to avoid crashes, the pod largely drives itself.
根据最后一段最后一句“Unless we can increase vehicle occupancy up from 1.1, we’re moving too much fresh air and not enough people.”(除非我们能把车辆占用率从1.1提高,否则我们就会输送太多的新鲜空气,而没有足够的人口。)

根据上文“However difficult you find it to arrange your time, it will pay off in the long run if you set aside a certain part of the day for studying—and stick to it.(不管你觉得安排时间有多困难,如果你抽出一天中的一部分时间来学习,并坚持下去,从长远来看,这是值得的)”以及后文“As part of your weekly schedule(作为你每周计划的一部分)”可知,本句是在建议最好制定一周的日程表,B选项中a weekly schedule对应后文中weekly schedule。
根据上文“As part of your weekly schedule, it is also advisable to consider exactly what you have to do in that week, and make sure that you handle the most significant tasks first.(作为你每周计划的一部分,也建议你仔细考虑一下这周你要做什么,并确保你先处理最重要的任务)”可知,上文提到确保先处理最重要的任务,可知把工作容易些的,不那么紧急的放在后面是明智的。
根据上文“On a physical level, make sure you have an area or space for studying.(在物质层面上,确保你有一个用于学习的区域或空间)”以及下文“If you always study in the same place, preferably a room of your own, you will find it easier to adjust mentally to the activity when you enter that area.(如果你总是在同一个地方学习,最好是一个你自己的房间,当你进入那个地方的时候,你会发现在心理上更容易适应学习活动)”可知,上文提到要确保有学习的区域或空间,即不要随便在什么地方学习,后文则说明了这一做法的好处。
根据上文“Make sure that all the physical equipment that you use, such as a desk, chair etc. is at good height for you. If you use a personal computer, there are plenty of guidelines available from the movement on angles, lighting and the like.(确保你使用的所有物理设备,如桌子、椅子等都处于适合你的高度。
根据上文“If you are working on topic your teacher has set, but finding it hard to concentrate, it may be that you actually need to take your mind right off it for a period of time.(如果你正专注于老师布置的题目,却发现很难集中注意力,那么你可能需要暂时把注意力从它上面移开)”以及后文“After a period away from the test, having not thought about it at all, you may return to it refreshed and full of ideas.(在离开测试一段时间后,在完全没有考虑过这个问题的情况下,你可能会重新回到测试中,并充满了想法)”可知,上文提到把注意力从题目上移开,后文则说再次回到测试中充满了想法,可见本句是在说明适当走神有时是很有用的,故D选项“‘放空头脑’有时能创造奇迹”符合语境,故选D。

A cashier who has a changing sea of ____48____(customer) every day will only remember names for a short amount of time.
The researchers point out that the motto is true: If you don’t use it, you lose it. But as this review paper shows, it can be ____49____ good thing. Clearing out the information you don’t need can help make room for the important stuff, ____50____ can make you become more intelligent.

分析句子可知,此处运用的是固定表达make it+adj+for sb to do sth.(让做某事对某人来说……),其中it为形式主语,真正的主语为后移的动词不定式,故填to make。
What and how much we remember与decide之间为被动关系,所以应使用被动语态结构be done,结合空前的can可知后接动词原形,故填be decided。

My father is a driver and my mother is a teacher. All of them work hard during the week. No matter what busy they are, they always manage to take us to my uncle's home at the weekend and work on the farm. The farm is not very big, and there is always so much to do. I like looking after the animal, taking them to the field, giving them food, and play with them. My parents help with my uncle in the field, while my aunt prepare dinner for us. Sometimes I help in the field, too. It is on the farm what I get to know the meaning of the saying, “A grain, a sweat”. After several hours' hard work, we are all hungry and tired. We usually have big meal, and then go back home in the evening.
1.All→Both
2.what→how
3.us→me
4.and→but
5.animal→animals
6.play→playing
7.去掉with
8.prepare→prepares

10.big前加a
故All改为Both。
故what改为how。
故us改为me。

故去掉with。
故what改为that。
故big前加a。

Dear Jack,
Knowing that you are rather interested in Chinese traditional opera, I am writing to invite you to join the opera club of our school set up recently.
The club begins every Friday after school, which starts from 5:30 to 7:30, lasting 2 hours. What’s more, there will be regular activities for the members of the club to participate in. Some well-known masters of Chinese traditional opera will be invited to give performances. Besides, members of the club are also encouraged to put on some performances themselves. There is much chance that you will learn a lot about Chinese traditional opera.
I do hope you will sign for it as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
