I stood behind the curtain, my hands shaking. As I listened to the crowd laugh at the host’s jokes, I just thought why I believed I could do that. Two months earlier, I had signed up for improv(即兴表演) classes at a local theater, along with four other graduate students.
When I first heard about the improv classes, I was torn. I feared getting on stage and performing in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to improve my communication ability and gain confidence.
During our first class, we learned the key concept of improv: “yes, and”. If someone says monkeys are librarians, for example, then monkeys are librarians. We don’t question the logic; we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. To do this well, we have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv happens when performers stay open to different possibilities. Over time, I started to enjoy our classes. I also became better at listening and communicating clearly in the moment.
That training was put to good use when I was giving a lecture about my science. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused, I used the “yes, and” method, and it helped me find proper answers. Last year, I came across confusing data. Instead of getting discouraged, I kept exploring the data and ended up discovering a new type of cell—one that wasn’t behaving as expected. If I hadn’t stayed open to the possibility that the results were real, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my Ph.D. so far.
4. Which word can best describe the author’s feeling in paragraph 1?

A. Acting in a clever way. B. Communicating with others.
C. Accepting others’ ideas. D. Asking others some questions.
7. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A. He failed in getting his doctor’s degree.
B. He was confident about giving a speech.
C. He became more open to unexpected things.
D. He got stuck after hearing unexpected questions.

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a firm of art dealers in the large city of The Hague. He eventually realised that dealing with others’ artwork was not his profession. His true love was to become an artist himself.
He devoted much of his time to learning the fundamentals of drawing. Van Gogh believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when he developed a style and talent for colour that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.
Van Gogh’s paintings are amazing representations of his view of the world. The colours jump off the canvas (画布), not only because of their brightness but also because of the brush strokes (笔触). Van Gogh avoided light, feathery strokes, which would portray (描写) typical subjects. Instead, he used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional.
Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of Van Gogh’s use of colour and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls (打旋) across the canvas, while the stars shine with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke creates the image of movement. The Starry Night shows Van Gogh’s great ability to create a powerful image with simple subjects.
Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. He is believed to have sold only one of the 900 paintings he created during those years. Yet today Van Gogh is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is evident; many painters mimic his style and use of colour. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world and is valued in millions of dollars, an evidence for Vincent Van Gogh’s talent.

A To praise Van Gogh’s ability. B. To prove Van Gogh’s respect for nature.
C. To show Van Gogh’s style of painting. D. To indicate Van Gogh’s feelings about his art.

Scientists are now digging into precisely why exercise holds so many benefits for our mental health and memory. The answer, studies say, lies in our brain chemistry.
Each time you work up a sweat, your body releases feel-good happy hormones (荷尔蒙), including endorphins, dopamine and endocannabinoids, the latter being responsible for the so-called runner’s high. Now researchers are also pointing to myokines (肌肉因子) as an important contributor to the mental health benefits of exercise. When our muscles contract, myokines are released into the bloodstream, helping your muscles and organs communicate. They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression.
A 2021 scientific report published in Neuropharmacology showed evidence that myokines boost brain function, like improving memory and mood. “Myokines reduce systemic inflammation (炎症), which is especially beneficial for people with drug-resistant depression whose low mood is linked to high inflammation,” explains Dr Jennifer Heisz, an expert in brain health and associate professor in the department of kinesiology at McMaster University in Canada.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that treatment for depression can be much more effective when physical activity is added to the usual care. Participants found benefits after 12 weeks of exercising for 30 to 60 minutes a day. “While exercise is not a replacement for professional mental health treatment, physical activity can complement and enhance the effects of the treatment,” says lead researcher Ben Singh, a research fellow at the University of South Australia.
“It is amazing to consider how moving our bodies can heal our minds,” says Heisz. Whether you’re cycling, walking around your neighbourhood or doing yoga, getting sweaty is good for your body and mind. To get the biggest overall health boost, the key is to zero in on sports and activities you enjoy, so you’ll keep going back to them.
12. How do myokines boost our mental health?
A. By bonding muscles with organs.
B. By slowing down our bloodstream.
C. By contracting muscles through the body.
D. By releasing happy hormones in our brain.
13. What is Ben Singh’s attitude towards physical activity in treatment for depression?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative.
C. Uncertain. D. Approving.
14. What does the underlined phrase “zero in on” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Adapt to. B. Give up.
C. Focus on. D. Put off.
15. How does the author develop the text?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By presenting research findings.
C. By offering suggestions.
D. By conducting some experiments.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried.
Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you’ve got a problem.”
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry but I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into a young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲的是研究发现运动有利于我们身心健康的原因在于运动时大脑里面所产生的化学发应。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“When our muscles contract, myokines are released into the bloodstream, helping your muscles and organs communicate. They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression.(当我们的肌肉收缩时,肌肉因子被释放到血液中,帮助你的肌肉和器官进行交流。他们认为,这种交流增加了对压力的弹性,减少了精神痛苦和焦虑的症状,并对抑郁有直接影响。)”可知肌肉因子通过将肌肉与器官结合来促进我们的心理健康。故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““While exercise is not a replacement for professional mental health treatment, physical activity can complement and enhance the effects of the treatment,”(“虽然运动不能替代专业的心理健康治疗,但体育活动可以补充和增强治疗的效果,”)”可知Ben Singh’s认为体育活动可以补充和增强治疗抑郁效果,所以Ben Singh’s对于治疗抑郁的体育活动的态度是赞同的。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段划线短语之前““It is amazing to consider how moving our bodies can heal our minds,” says Heisz. Whether you’re cycling, walking around your neighbourhood or doing yoga, getting sweaty is good for your body and mind. To get the biggest overall health boost, the key is to(海兹说:“考虑到移动我们的身体如何治愈我们的大脑,这令人惊讶。”无论你是骑自行车,在附近散步还是做瑜伽,出汗对你的身心都有好处。要获得最大的整体健康提升,关键是)”以及划线短语之后“sports and activities you enjoy, so you’ll keep going back to them.(你喜欢的运动和活动,所以你会继续回到它们身边。)”
通读全文,再根据第二段“They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression. (他们认为这种沟通可以增强对压力的抵抗力,减少精神痛苦和焦虑的症状,并对抑郁症有直接影响)”和第三段“A 2021 scientific report published in Neuropharmacology showed evidence that myokines boost brain function, like improving memory and mood. (2021年发表在《神经药理学》上的一份科学报告显示,有证据表明肌细胞因子可以增强大脑功能,如改善记忆和情绪)”以及第四段“A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that treatment for depression can be much more effective when physical activity is added to the usual care. (最近发表在《英国运动医学杂志》上的一项研究表明,在日常护理中增加体育活动可以更有效地治疗抑郁症)”可推知,文章前四段集中列举了研究结果,所以作者是通过列举研究结果的方式展开文章的。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

【答案】 As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!” “Give my suitcase back to me!” Hearing this, Arthur immediately realized that the young man was the bank thief. So he continued running until he stopped a taxi. Then he quickly got into it and sat in the back seat. Out of breath, Arthur said to the taxi driver, “Please go to the Police Station as soon as possible. I have a robbery to report to the policeman.” The moment the taxi driver got the request, he drove straight to the police station without hesitation.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station. Arthur ran into it, shouting, “There is a bank robbery and I know who the bank thief is.” On hearing Arthur’s story, the policeman decided to head for the bank to investigate the case. However, just at that moment, the young man came to the police station in a hurry. Out of breath, He told the whole story. As a matter of fact, he was not the bank thief and what in the suitcase were only some clothes. How embarrassed Arthur was when he learned the truth!
