One afternoon in 2022, something on the Internet caught my eye:a tiny hedgehog (刺猬) held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school fulltime. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person through and through and had raised cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals. He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his modeling.
Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the payoff (回报) is pretty great.
4. The author got Louie from .
A. a pet shop B. a family friend
C. a hedgehog owner D. a hedgehog rescue center
5. How did Louie seem to feel at the author’s home?
A. Frightened. B. Relaxed. C. Lonely. D. Tired.
6. What can we learn about Louie from paragraph 4?
A. He disliked climbing stairs. B. He enjoyed being left alone.
C. He always refused to be in photos. D. He was active despite his difficulty in moving.
7. What does the author say about raising Louie?
A. It was easier than expected. B. It gave her a sense of safety.
C. It made her lose her patience. D. It was satisfying and meaningful.
C
Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting and great fun? Do you think you would have lots of desirable fun? Certainly, it is a new experience, one that brings the chance to discover amazing things and a feeling of freedom. But do remember that there are also some challenges, for your views may disagree with the different beliefs, norms (社会准则), values and traditions of different countries. This is called "culture shock". The following are the stages of adjusting (调整).
The first stage is called "the honeymoon", where you are excited about living in a different place, and everything seems to be fantastic. You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you. Also, the amusement of life in a new culture seems as though it will have no ending. Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears, "the hostility stage". Everything that seemed so wonderful is now terrible. Usually you protect yourself against the effects of culture shock.
Next comes the stage, "recovery". You start to feel more positive. You recover from the first two stages. Even though the cultures are different from your own, you begin to appreciate it.
The last stage is "fitting in". In this stage, you have reached a point where you actually feel good because you are able to understand the new culture.
Obviously, culture shock is not something you can avoid in a foreign country. When you have completely adjusted to a new culture, you can more fully enjoy it. Furthermore, learning about other cultures and how to adjust to the shock of living in them helps you learn more about yourself.
8. Which of the following is a challenge when studying abroad?
A. Finding amazing things. B. Feeling free from school.
C. Disagreement with teachers. D. Different ideas from others.
9. How many stages of adjusting to culture shock does the passage mention?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
10. Which statement is correct according to the passage?
A. Culture shock can be avoided in a foreign country.
B. The amusement of life in a new culture discourages those who come to a new country.
C. You won’t begin to appreciate the new cultures until the third stage of adjusting.
D. It’s impossible for people to adjust to a new culture completely.
11. Who is the passage intended for most probably?
A. University students. B. Exchange students.
C. Boarding students. D. Teenage students.
D
The easiest and least complicated way to motivate somebody is quite simply to pay them attention. What you say is not important, nor necessarily is how long you spend saying it, as long as it’s something. “Nice weather” or “How are you?” will do.
People just love attention, adults and children. Children love attention so much that they will do anything to get some. In fact, if children are not getting enough attention, they would rather be naughty and get told off than be “good” and be ignored. An interesting time in most households with young children is dinnertime-it’s the end of the day, everybody is tired, the house is in a mess and Johnny doesn’t like carrots and is refusing to eat his food. Again, the easy trap to fall into is to start getting cross with Johnny and getting into a big argument about his food. Again, he’s getting the attention he desires; even if it’s not the best sort of attention, it’s better than nothing. It’s fascinating if you are able to stand back from the situation and instead focus attention and praise on Johnny’s brother who is eating his food-after all, he is one that is doing what you want him to do. After five or ten minutes or so of being ignored, it’s amazing how quickly (usually) Johnny sees sense and obeys. I’ve watched my own children in this situation go from screaming from behind the sofa, saying “Mummy, aren’t I doing good dinner eating?”-all without having one word spoken to them by their parents, who are busily paying attention to their brothers.
This fundamental need for attention, and doing whatever it takes to get it, doesn’t disappear when we turn into adults. Sure, there are people who are “real attention seekers” in a loud and extravert (外向的) way, and there are the shy, retiring types who don’t want attention in such a “sociable” way. But everybody still wants to be recognized and seen worthwhile.
12. What will children probably do to get parents attention?
A. They will get quiet for a long time. B. They will ignore their parents.
C. They will behave naughtily. D. They will get cross easily.
13. What does the underlined phrase “the easy trap to fall into” mean?
A. A set-up situation parents are likely to go into.
B. The household work that parents can not avoid.
C. Some tempting food children easily love to eat.
D. A bad habit children easily develop.
14. An effective way to make children behave themselves may be ________.
A. scolding them severely B. teaching them what to do
C. giving them total freedom D. praising their sisters or brothers
15. What point does the author make by relating to children’s behavior?
A. Children s upbringing needs parents’ constant care.
B. Children are usually extravert while adults are sociable.
C. Both children and adults need to be seen as worthwhile.
D. The motivation of children differs greatly from that of adults.

Have you ever been so depressed that you can’t sleep? You also can’t eat. You can’t read. You have no friends to call up and nothing is good on TV. So you sigh, press your face down harder into your pillow, and shed a few tears.
This was my life two years ago. I had just turned 14 but already found life a struggle. As I lay in my bed one Saturday, Mom peeked (瞄) into my room to make her regular “Is Emily still alive” check. I knew that if I spent more time like this, she would begin dusting me. After suggesting a few things for me to do that I immediately rejected, Mom made her move, “Emily! Get dressed! I’m taking the dog out for a walk, and you’re coming with me!” “Why?” I protested. “Because it’ll make you feel better.”
The thought of moving was unbearable. I felt as if all of my body parts were weighed down by tons of bricks I couldn’t remember the last time I had gone outside. Somehow I found the strength to slip on a pair of jeans and a black sweatshirt. Mom was waiting at the door, leash (狗绳) in hand and dog at her side.
Then, we stepped outside. It was a warm March day and it had been a long time since the warmth of the sun had touched my cheeks. Mom led the dog and me down some dirt paths, through a big field and reached Halsey Pond. But the signs of spring had yet to appear and the scene was rather colorless throughout the entire journey.
“I’m tired! It’s boring, Mom! When can we go home?” “Not yet,” she’d say. Mom stopped to say hi to every jogger, dog walker, runner, and bicyclist who passed us. Sometimes she would get into a conversation. They would talk about weather, dogs, and all small talk topics. She seemed happy, and was literally glowing After walking for what seemed an age, Mom finally said it was time to go back.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: When I got home, a new feeling seemed to be awakened.

D 9. C 10. C 11. B

C 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据文章第二段“Children love attention so much that they will do anything to get some. In fact, if children are not getting enough attention, they would rather be naughty and get told off than be “good” and be ignored.(孩子们非常喜欢被关注,他们会做任何事情来获得关注。事实上,如果孩子没有得到足够的关注,他们宁愿淘气,被责备,也不愿“乖”,被忽视。)”可知,孩子为了得到父母的关注,会表现得淘气捣蛋。因此,孩子们可能会表现得淘气来得到父母的关注。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“People just love attention, adults and children. Children love attention so much that they will do anything to get some. In fact, if children are not getting enough attention, they would rather be naughty and get told off than be “good” and be ignored. An interesting time in most households with young children is dinnertime-it’s the end of the day, everybody is tired, the house is in a mess and Johnny doesn’t like carrots and is refusing to eat his food.(人们就是喜欢被关注,大人和孩子都一样。 故选A。
根据文章第二段“It’s fascinating if you are able to stand back from the situation and instead focus attention and praise on Johnny’s brother who is eating his food-after all, he is one that is doing what you want him to do. After five or ten minutes or so of being ignored, it’s amazing how quickly(usually)Johnny sees sense and obeys. (如果你能从这种情况中退一步,把注意力和赞美集中在Johnny的弟弟身上,他正在吃他的食物——毕竟,他是一个在做你想让他做的事情的人。) ”可知,通过表扬兄弟姐妹来让一个孩子行为得体是有效的方法。故选D。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“This fundamental need for attention, and doing whatever it takes to get it, doesn’t disappear when we turn into adults. Sure, there are people who are “real attention seekers” in a loud and extravert (外向的) way, and there are the shy, retiring types who don’t want attention in such a “sociable” way. But everybody still wants to be recognized and seen worthwhile.(这种对关注的基本需求,以及为获得关注而不惜一切代价的需求,并没有在我们长大成人后消失。当然,有些人是“真正寻求关注的人”,他们以大声和外向的方式(外向的),也有害羞,隐退的类型,他们不希望以这“社交”的方式得到关注。但每个人都希望被认可,被认为是有价值的。)”可知,作者认为儿童对于关注的渴求和成人一样都需要被视作有价值的。故选C。

【答案】Dear Jack,
Knowing that you are interested in the Dragon Boat Festival, I'd like to introduce it to you.
The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the most traditional festivals in China, falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month in honor of a great poet named Qu Yuan, who devoted his life to his motherland. On that day, we often eat Zongzi, a special kind of rice-dumplings. Besides, exciting dragon-boat races are usually held, through which we follow the trace of our ancestors to spread traditional Chinese culture.
As the Dragon Boat Festival is approaching, why not join us to celebrate it?
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1: When I got home, a new feeling seemed to be awakened.

Paragraph 2: A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
When I got home, a new feeling seemed to be awakened. The heaviness that had weighed me down before seemed to have lifted, if only slightly. The simple act of being outside, feeling the warmth of the sun, and hearing the chirping of birds had sparked something inside me. It was a glimmer of hope, a tiny ray of light in the darkness of my depression. I realized that maybe, just maybe, there was still something worth living for.
Paragraph 2:
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out. This time, it was me who suggested the walk. As we strolled through the familiar paths, I noticed the subtle changes in the scenery. The trees were starting to bud, flowers were beginning to bloom, and the pond was alive with the sounds of frogs and insects. It was as if nature itself was coming alive, mirroring the newfound sense of life stirring within me. With each step, I felt a little lighter, a little more alive. And as we returned home, I realized that sometimes, the simplest moments can have the most profound impact on our lives.
