She had been unwell recently and lived alone. Her sons live in foreign countries. After I called her and told about my plan to visit her, she started becoming excited and planning food at once. Nowadays, she has a lady cook coming by to help her but she does part of the work herself with her bandaged (绷带) leg. I reached her home alone after being guided a couple of times by her before. I carried little things (snacks, books etc.) for her. She had been waiting for some time when I arrived. We talked about different things from health to her life and mine, from past to future, from food to travel etc. During the discussion, her care for me became clear when she made warm suggestions or supported me. During the last few months, she had struggled with health and housework. She had got over those difficulties and here she was telling me how all of us must face some problems. She had seen a few people facing worse problems in the hospital and mentioned about their cases and was grateful for her present condition which was manageable. She wanted to gift me something—she kept thinking of a dress, watch, footwear etc. whatever was new and great in her home. I kept refusing but finally took the footwear out of politeness. She loved the snacks I had brought and wanted to eat them with her tea, I was quite happy to see the childlike interest. While I was spending time with my motherly friend, the following thought kept coming back to me—probably this is why I have lived through the 10 days in this city. The time I spent with her seemed so much needed. I felt the deep peace it could bring to me and that brought such a big joy! 24. How did the elderly lady feel when she heard the author’s visit? A. Shocked. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Embarrassed. 25. What can we learn about the lady from her talks with the author? A. She was considerate and very healthy. B. She wished the author lo live with her. C. She showed much concern to her bandaged leg. D. She was grateful compared with those less fortunate. 26. Why did the author accept the lady’s gift? A. It is impolite to turn down the warm-hearted offer. B. She happened to need such shoes to wear. C. It would be a waste to keep shoes unused. D. She wanted to exchange gifts with her. 27. How did the time spent with the lady benefit the author? A. It enabled the author to live in the city so long. B. It gave the author a lot of advice on a better life. C. It helped the author to keep a peaceful mind. D. It helped the author stay away from loneliness in life. B 25. D 26. A 27. After I called her and told about my plan to visit her, she started becoming excited and planning food at once.(我打电话给她,告诉她我要去看她的计划后,她开始变得兴奋起来,马上开始准备吃的)可知,那位老太太听到作者要来探望它后感到很高兴。 She had seen a few people facing worse problems in the hospital and mentioned about their cases and was grateful for her present condition which was manageable.(她看到一些人在医院里面临着更严重的问题,并提到了他们的情况,她很感激自己目前的状况是可控的)可知,与那些不幸的人相比,她心怀感激。 I kept refusing but finally took the footwear out of politeness.(我一直拒绝,但最后还是出于礼貌把鞋子拿走了)可知,作者最终接受了老太太的礼物,是因为拒绝热心的礼物是不礼貌的。 The time I spent with her seemed so much needed. I felt the deep peace it could bring to me and that brought such a big joy! C Macquarie Island is a tiny island that’s part of Australia. It’s about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. The island’s been made a world heritage area because it’s so untouched, but this unique environment is under threat from some unwanted visitors. It all started when seal hunters came to the island in the early 1800s. They brought rabbits with them as a source of food for the journey, and also on board the ships were rats and mice, which made their way onto the island too. They’re being blamed for destroying the homes of marine birds, causing soil loss and ripping up plant cover, as these before-and-after photos show. So what’s being done about the problem? It starts with a team of helicopters that fly across the island carrying these giant containers. Inside them are poisoned pellets (有毒饲料) which are dropped and spread across the island. For any rabbits that survived the baiting (诱饵) , there’s a plan B. This special team of dogs is being put through a final training. It’ll be their job to track down any remaining rabbits. They have to also learn to behave around the island’s native wildlife. The dogs could be here for years or until the task is complete. The dogs don’t actually kill the rabbits. They find them, then the hunters decide to either catch the rabbits or shoot them. But the program has received a bit of criticism. Some people argue 25 million dollars is a lot of money to be spending on wiping out rabbits and rodents (啮齿目动物), and in the process, some native birds will be killed because of the baiting. The reality is the problem isn’t going to be solved overnight. The people running the program say that even if one pair of rabbits is left alive, the whole task will be seen as a failure, which means these guys could be here for a long time, trying to ensure that this precious island remains protected from pests. 28. Who are these unwanted visitors? A. Seal hunters. B. Marine wildlife. C. Native birds. D. Foreign species. 29. What do the underlined words “ripping up” mean in paragraph 2? A. Advancing. B. Destroying. C. Dividing D. Balancing 30. What is being done to solve the problem of unwanted visitors on Macquarie Island? A. Poisoned pellets are being dropped on the island from helicopters. B. A team of hunters is being trained to catch or shoot rabbits. C. Native birds are being protected from the unwanted visitors. D. A special team of dogs is being sent to kill the rabbits. 31. What is the goal of the program? A. To spend as little money as possible. B. To protect native birds from the unwanted visitors. C. To ensure that no pair of rabbits survive on the island. D. To train dogs to track down the rabbits on the island. D 29. B 30. A 31. 根据第一段“Macquarie Island is a tiny island that’s part of Australia. It’s about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. The island’s been made a world heritage area because it’s so untouched, but this unique environment is under threat from some unwanted visitors.(麦夸里岛是澳大利亚的一个小岛。它位于新西兰和南极洲之间。该岛被列为世界遗产,因为它是如此的原始,但这种独特的环境正受到一些不速之客的威胁)”以及第二段“It all started when seal hunters came to the island in the early 1800s. They brought rabbits with them as a source of food for the journey, and also on board the ships were rats and mice, which made their way onto the island too.(这一切都始于19世纪初海豹猎人来到这座岛屿。他们带着兔子作为旅途的食物来源,船上还有老鼠,它们也来到了岛上)”可知,这些不速之客是指外国的物种。故选D项。 【29题详解】 词句猜测题。根据前文“They’re being blamed for destroying the homes of marine birds(它们被指责破坏了海鸟的家园)”可知,它们破坏了海鸟的家园,所以应是破坏了植被,推知ripping up是“破坏”之意,和B项意思相近。 根据第三段“So what’s being done about the problem? It starts with a team of helicopters that fly across the island carrying these giant containers. Inside them are poisoned pellets (有毒饲料) which are dropped and spread across the island.(那么针对这个问题我们采取了什么措施呢?一开始,一队直升机载着这些巨大的集装箱飞越岛屿。它们里面是有毒的颗粒,这些颗粒会掉下来,扩散到整个岛屿)”可知,为解决Macquarie Island不速之客的问题,直升飞机正在向岛上投放有毒的弹丸。故选A项。 根据最后一段“The people running the program say that even if one pair of rabbits is left alive, the whole task will be seen as a failure, which means these guys could be here for a long time, trying to ensure that this precious island remains protected from pests.(负责这个项目的人说,即使有一对兔子活着,整个任务也会被视为失败,这意味着这些人可能会在这里待很长时间,试图确保这个珍贵的岛屿免受害虫的侵害)”可知,这个项目的目标是确保没有一对兔子在岛上存活。故选C项。 D Why do we talk the way we do? It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. This environmental change pushed our ancestors out of the trees and onto the ground. Along with all of the physical and behavioral changes this may have caused, researchers also believe it may have changed the way we speak. “Open landscapes provide us with fewer objects to affect signal communication, meaning our voices can travel further compared with that in thick forests,” Charlotte Gannon, a researcher who studies language development, told Newsweek. “The move to these open spaces may have increased the effectiveness of our communication.” By comparing the vocal calls of the orangutan (大猩猩) , Gannon and her team were able to establish how different calls could travel across different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls from orangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length over an overall distance of over 1,300 feet in the South African plain. “Our results were surprising,” Gannon said, “The rule of sound spread suggests that lower-frequency (低频率) sounds (the grumphs) would have traveled further than higher-frequency sounds (the kiss squeaks). Our results actually found the opposite to this.” In these environmental settings, consonant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lot further than vowel (元音) -like calls. Actually, around 80 percent of consonant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, compared to only 20 percent of vowel-based calls. Gannon said these results highlight the importance of studying living orangutan to learn about our species’ history. “We can view them as time machines that allow us to recreate key moments of our history so we can learn more about the development of our language,” Gannon said. “Despite their popularity in modern languages, consonants have often been forgotten when discussing speech development. Our research highlights not only their presence in ancient times but their importance to the development of language.” 32. What led to the speech development? A. Behavioral change. B. Time development. C. Physical development. D. Environmental change. 33. What makes communication happening 10 million years ago more effective? A. Less block. B. Better tools. C. Louder voice. D. Larger vocabulary. 34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The results of the study. B. The process of the research. C. The purpose of the program. D. The participants of the project. 35. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. The living orangutan can recreate our language. B. Consonants are significant in language development. C. The sound of grumphs travels further than that of kiss squeaks. D. Consonant-like calls travel four times further than vowel-like calls. D 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第一段“Why do we talk the way we do? It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. This environmental change pushed our ancestors out of the trees and onto the ground. Along with all of the physical and behavioral changes this may have caused, researchers also believe it may have changed the way we speak.(我们为什么要这样说话?这可能要追溯到我们的祖先离开丛林来到开阔平原的时候。在530万到1600万年前,非洲的地貌从茂密的森林变成了开阔的草原。这种环境变化把我们的祖先从树上推到了地上。除了可能引起的身体和行为变化外,研究人员还认为它可能改变了我们说话的方式)”可知,环境变化导致了语言的发展。故选D项。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段““Open landscapes provide us with fewer objects to affect signal communication, meaning our voices can travel further compared with that in thick forests,” Charlotte Gannon, a researcher who studies language development, told Newsweek. “The move to these open spaces may have increased the effectiveness of our communication.”(研究语言发展的研究人员夏洛特·甘农在接受《新闻周刊》采访时表示:“开阔的景观为我们提供了更少的物体来影响信号交流,这意味着与茂密的森林相比,我们的声音可以传播得更远。”“搬到这些开放空间可能提高了我们沟通的效率。”)”可推知,更少的阻碍让1000万年前的交流变得更有效。故选A项。 根据第三段“By comparing the vocal calls of the orangutan (大猩猩) , Gannon and her team were able to establish how different calls could travel across different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls from orangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length over an overall distance of over 1,300 feet in the South African plain.(通过比较猩猩的叫声,甘农和她的团队能够确定不同的叫声是如何在不同的景观中传播的。在他们的研究中,研究小组播放了487个猩猩的叫声,并在南非平原上超过1300英尺的总距离上测量了它们的可听性)”可知,本段主要讲述了研究的过程。故选B项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In these environmental settings, consonant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lot further than vowel (元音) -like calls. Actually, around 80 percent of consonant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, compared to only 20 percent of vowel-based calls.(在这些环境中,类似辅音的叫声比类似元音的叫声传播得更远。实际上,在1300英尺的高空,大约80%的辅音通话都能被听到,而元音通话只有20%能被听到)”以及最后一段““We can view them as time machines that allow us to recreate key moments of our history so we can learn more about the development of our language,” Gannon said. “Despite their popularity in modern languages, consonants have often been forgotten when discussing speech development. Our research highlights not only their presence in ancient times but their importance to the development of language.”(甘农说:“我们可以把它们看作时光机,让我们重现历史上的关键时刻,这样我们就能更多地了解我们语言的发展。尽管辅音在现代语言中很受欢迎,但在讨论语言发展时却经常被遗忘。我们的研究不仅强调了它们在古代的存在,而且强调了它们对语言发展的重要性。”)”可推知,辅音在语言发展中很重要。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to help yourself relax before bed Having trouble sleeping lately? I pulled a friend towards the ice cream store, almost passing out from the burning sun on the way. As we walked on, my friend kept saying that it was too hot. She thought that she was stupid to decide to come with me to buy ice cream. I felt sorry and tried to encourage her. “We're almost there. Just think of the cool and sweet taste of ice cream in your mouth. It'll be worth the walk,” I told her. But I had to admit that the store was quite a distance from our houses. During the journey, my mouth began to become dry and I wanted to drink. When we were about a block away from the store, I noticed an old lady who was walking in our direction. She was about 70 years old. She had a big back problem, so she was unable to keep her back straight. She was struggling, pushing a shopping cart full of things like the soap, bread and water. With each step toward her, we began to see her appearance more clearly. It appeared that she was often unhappy and easy to get angry. I looked at my friend to see if she had noticed her. I could see that she had and that she disliked the old lady due to the lady's appearance. As we approached the lady pushing the shopping cart, my friend directed me away from the old lady and the cart. I began to observe other passers-by. They were also trying to avoid her. Suddenly I heard a terrible sound behind me. I quickly turned around to see what it was. I found the lady's cart had been knocked over by something on the ground. Paragraph 1: Things in the shopping cart like the soap all dropped on the ground. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then my friend continued walking on while I went to the lady. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Things in the shopping cart like the soap all dropped on the ground. I watched in shock as the lady bent down slowly and tried hard to collect her things. I turned to my friend and asked, “Shall we go and help her?” “It is not we who knocked her shopping cart over,” my friend said impatiently, walking ahead. I stood there for a moment, suddenly feeling sorry for this pitiful lady. “I'll help her,” I said with determination. Paragraph 2: Then my friend continued walking on while I went to the lady. “Let me help you,” I said as I helped her get the cart up. The lady looked up and said tearfully, “Thank you!” Then I helped her put things back into her cart. To my surprise, some passers-by joined me, including my friend. With everything put into her cart, my friend and I helped push it to her house. B Today, after 10 days of medical treatment, for the first time, I went out alone to meet a motherly lady who I had met during my stay in a program. 29 What do the underlined words “ripping up” mean in paragraph 2? A. Advancing. B. Destroying. C. D Why do we talk the way we do? D Consonant-like calls travel four times further than vowel-like calls. How to help yourself relax before bed Having trouble sleeping lately? I decided to walk to the neighborhood store where it sold my favorite thing, ice cream. When we were about a block away from the store I noticed an old lady who was walking in our direction. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
