I had never even considered being a stay-at-home dad. I worked as a broadcaster for 20 years, and to an extent, I felt defined by my job. I was also never close to my own father. After my parents divorced, my dad and I stopped speaking when I was 15, and we would never speak to each other again. I found out he died almost by chance.
Yet here I was, with no real road map on how to be a father. My wife and I read all the books and talked to friends with kids. Then our son Finn arrived and from the moment we saw him, we both finally knew what love was. With parental leave finishing, we went back to work. We tried daycare. Our son was always sick and we felt sick inside from being apart from him. We decided that one of us would have to stay at home with him. So I quit working. I am grateful every day that I did.
Staying at home with my son changed me. It takes patience to be with a child all day, and I found I had more of it than I thought. His excitement at each new discovery was infectious. Inspired by his openness and creativity, I found myself having adventures and building Lego spaceships together with him.
My son has made me a better person, and I came to realize that being a parent was also going to make me better at my job. Even though I once never thought I’d be a stay-at-home dad, now I know I was born to do it. Being a father is the great honor of my life. Finn and I are deeply close, and I feel sad for fathers like my own, who never get to know this kind of intimacy. I had to leave work to build this relationship, and it was worth it. The experience of staying home has increased my value as an employee and a person.
4. Why did the author know little about being a father?
A. He didn’t have a model to follow. B. His friends didn’t talk about it with him.

A. disappointment. B. closeness. C. excitement. D. surprise.
7. What does the author express in the last paragraph?
A. He intends to forgive his father. B. He actually wants to return to work.
C. He becomes good at balancing his work and life. D. He benefits a lot from the valuable experience.

For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic (遗传的) risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
8. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A. By analyzing a mass of data. B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity. D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
9. What does the study show about depression?
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
10. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Harmful. B. Unusual. C. Common. D. Complex.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To discuss a disease of depression. B. To explain a phenomenon of depression.
C. To analyze a genetic risk of depression. D. To introduce a method to lower the risk of depression.
D
E-cigarettes are increasingly being used as a nicotine (尼古丁) alternative (替代品) as smokers look for ways to kick their habit — and then stay off cigarettes for good. E-cigarettes work by heating a pure liquid called e-juice — made up of flavorings, propylene glycol, glycerin and often nicotine — until it changes into gas.
The use of vaping (电子烟) for tobacco stopping became especially popular in the UK after a study found that e-cigarettes helped 50,000 to 70,000 smokers in England give up smoking in 2017.
It is said that vaping cleared the 7,000 or more chemicals found in a burning cigarette and its smoke, many of which are harmful, according to Johns Hopkins medicine.
But their use has become controversial (有争议的) in the US and other countries because of warnings about possible long-term health effects, possibly from ingredients besides nicotine in the vape juice or cartridge. The US Surgeon General says vapes can contain “ultrafine substances that can be taken deep into the lungs, flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead.”
What's more, countless studies found teen use is a direct gateway to traditional cigarette smoking at a time when teenager use of e-cigarettes was increasing.
A 2019 outbreak of a mysterious vaping-related lung disease among American youth has triggered alarm as well. As of February 2020, the condition had killed at least 68 people and sickened more than 2,807, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One 18-year-old American who vaped for over a year ended up in the hospital with “lungs like a 70-year-old.”
The condition, now known as EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury), is strongly linked to e-cigarettes containing vitamin E acetate, a sticky oil substance that can cling to lung tissue.
12. What can we learn about e-cigarettes from the first two paragraphs?
A. They consist of gases. B. They contain no nicotine.
C. They take the place of cigarettes. D. They were accepted in Britain.
13. What does the US Surgeon General want to tell us about e-cigarettes?
A. They contain healthy substances. B. They are harmful to people’s health.
C. They can help people stop smoking. D. They are better than traditional cigarettes.
14. What can be inferred about American teenagers?
A. E-cigarettes hurt their lungs badly. B. They find a way to anti-smoking.
C. E-cigarettes make them look older. D. The US Center stops them smoking.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Harmful E-cigarettes?
B. Smoking or Non-Smoking?
C. The Popularity of E-cigarettes in the UK?
D. Use of E-cigarettes as Anti-smoking Assistance?

C They take the place of cigarettes.

根据第一段中的“When Yi Xiaoyang was two, he fell in love with skiing (滑雪). (当易晓阳两岁的时候,他爱上了滑雪。)”和“He started to learn how to ski from then on. (从那时起,他开始学习滑雪。)”可知,易晓阳在两岁时开始学习滑雪。表示“开始做某事”应用start to do或start doing,所以此处应用ski的动词不定式或动名词形式。故填skiing/to ski。
根据第一段中的“His first time on snow, however, wasn’t successful. (然而,他第一次在雪地上并不成功。)”可知,他第一次滑雪并不成功,所以应用succeed的形容词形式unsuccessful表示“不成功的”作表语。故填unsuccessful。
③考查名词。根据第二段中的“In 2015, Beijing got the chance to hold the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. (2015年,北京获得了举办2022年冬奥会的机会。)”可知,北京获得了举办2022年冬奥会的机会,所以应用名词opportunity表示“机会”作宾语。故填opportunity。
④考查形容词。根据第二段中的“Yi felt it hopeful to take part in the Olympics. (易认为参加奥运会是有希望的。)”可知,易对此感到非常兴奋,所以应用excite的形容词形式excited表示“兴奋的”作表语。故填excited。
⑤考查固定搭配。根据第二段中的“He decided to take training courses like a professional athlete (他决定像职业运动员一样参加训练课程)”可知,他决定参加训练课程,be determined to do意为“决定做某事”,为固定搭配。 故填was determined。

根据第四段中的“They talked to my parents and decided to give me a one-week break from training. (他们和我父母谈过,决定让我休息一周。)”可知,他向父母求助,动词短语turn to意为“向某人求助”,符合语境。根据“decided to have a week’s break from training”可知,此处应用一般过去时。故填turned to。
根据第五段中的“Luckily, during that break, he picked up his joy in skiing. (幸运的是,在休息期间,他重拾了滑雪的乐趣。)”可知,幸运的是他重拾了滑雪的乐趣,所以应用fortunate的副词形式fortunately表示“幸运的是”作状语。句首首字母应大写。故填Fortunately。
⑨考查形容词。根据第五段中的“I found that skiing had already become one important part of me(我发现滑雪已经成为我的一个重要组成部分)”可知,滑雪已经是他重要的一部分,所以应用importance的形容词形式important表示“重要的”作定语。

want to do意为“想要做某事”,所以此处应用to do不定式。
根据第一段中的“His first time on snow, however, wasn’t successful. He slept on the ski lift until the coach found him. (然而,他第一次在雪地上并不成功。他睡在滑雪缆车上,直到教练找到他。)”可知,易晓阳第一次滑雪并不成功,因为他睡在滑雪缆车上直到教练找到他。故答案为No. Because he slept on the ski lift until the coach found him.。
根据第四段中的“I even got angry with my coaches. They talked to my parents and decided to give me a one-week break from training. (我甚至对我的教练都很生气。他们和我父母谈过,决定让我休息一周。)”和第五段“Luckily, during that break, he picked up his joy in skiing. “I found that skiing had already become one important part of me, ” said Yi. After that, he moved back on his fight for his dreams .(幸运的是,在休息期间,他重拾了滑雪的乐趣。“我发现滑雪已经成为我的一个重要组成部分。”易说。在那之后,他重新开始为自己的梦想而奋斗。)”可知,对滑雪的热爱和天赋、勤勉,以及父母和教练的支持与帮助,让易晓阳成为了一名优秀的滑雪运动员。故答案为His love/interest, gift /talent /ability to learn, hard work, and support /help from his parents and his coaches.。

Dear classmates,
It is my great honor to talk about a critical issue, the protection of endangered animals. We humans are blessed with such diverse species. Losing them would not only mean losing a part of our planet’s natural beauty, but it would also disturb the ecological balance and harm our environment.
However, the current situation is alarming. Many species are facing extinction due to human activities like habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change.
Therefore, immediate measures must be taken! Firstly, we should spread awareness about the importance of conservation. Secondly, supporting organizations working towards wildlife protection is vital. Moreover, we can also adopt more environmentally friendly habits, like reducing waste and recycling.
Let’s work together to protect these irreplaceable treasures of our planet. Thanks for listening!
