What should you do if there’s an earthquake (地震) at school? How can you save yourself when you are caught in a stampede (踩踏)? March 25 this year provided you with something about safety (安全).
This day is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (NDESEMSS) (全国中小学生安全教育日). The topic of the day this year is to help students learn more about safety and make sure their lives safe. A survey shows that school accidents kill more students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries (伤害). What can we do to keep ourselves safe? Staying calm (冷静的) is the first and most important rule when facing accidents. But we have different advice on different accidents.
A stampede is possible anywhere. The more people get together, the more likely stampedes are to come. When students around you begin to push, you should stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands.
Earthquakes are common. When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoor, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ words, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
39. What should you do first when accidents happen according to this passage?
A. Run away. B. Stand there. C. Keep calm.
40. According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Car accidents kill the most school students of all accidents.
B. When there’s a fire, you should use cloth to cover your mouth and nose.
C. If you fall down in a moving crowd, you can do nothing but wait there.
41. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Be Afraid of Accidents B. The Earthquake Is Coming C. How to Save Yourself
C
Everyone has problems. When you meet something difficult, who can you ask for advice? These people may be your classmates, parents, teachers, long-lost friends or even a real stranger. They will make your life different in some ways. What they did or said may teach you a lesson or help you recognize (认识) who you are. For example, your best friend doesn’t trust you anymore. You will feel terrible and unfair at that time. But later you will find out the reasons and try your best to solve the problem. Then you will know that everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck. So the people around you and the successes and failures you have experienced will help you recognize who you are. In fact, the bad experiences are the most profound and important ones.
Please enjoy every day even every moment and learn from it because you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and listen to them. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself. Then you will have a bright future.
42. What your teachers did or said may ________.
A. make you unhappy B. help you C. hurt you
43. From the passage, we know that bad experiences can ________
A. make us meet bad luck B. help us solve problems C. make us sad
44. The underlined word “profound” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.
A. 开心的 B. 喜欢的 C. 深刻的

A. never talk to strange people B. learn from experiences C. not listen to other people

Scientists think there are between eight and fourteen million kinds of plants and animals, but we only know about 1.8 million now. They are slowly finding new kinds all the time, and that’s good news for us.
In 2009, a group of scientists went to the rainforest to search for new kinds of animals. They had to walk silently and looked really carefully. They found a tiny frog (青蛙) that is smaller than the end of your smallest finger! They found another frog, too. That looks like it is made of glass. The scientists also found seven new kinds of grasshoppers (蚱蜢). Some of them are very beautiful.
Scientists tell us that frogs and insects (昆虫) are very important. They help to keep our environment clean. We can also use them to make new medicines. Researchers all over the world are working very hard to find new plants and animals every day.

Everyone has problems. When you meet something difficult, who can you ask for advice? These people may be your classmates, parents, teachers, long-lost friends or even a real stranger.
