My name is Jimmy. One Thursday afternoon, when I was in senior one, a new boy came into my classroom. He was short and thin. He walked up to the teacher and told her, very seriously, that he was new. His name was Christian. He sat down, took a look at me, and then looked away. I didn’t think he was very nice and I was sure he wasn’t the type I would like to become friends with.
During that year, I didn’t talk to him much, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never ate lunch with anybody, and he never talked to anybody but me.
But one day I joined those unkind kids who were making fun of him. We made fun of him though I thought it was wrong.
“Haven’t you got any friends?” a kid asked Christian, who had walked past us alone, head down.
“No, he hasn’t got any friends. He’s too stupid and shy,” I said. Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest dog eyes I had ever seen. I felt very sorry at that moment.
That night, I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t get Christian’s face out of my mind. In the weeks that followed, he never met my eyes in class and never smiled at me. It was really hard for me to decide to write him a note asking him to forgive (原谅) me. But I thought I should.
The next day in class, I wrote him a note telling him how sorry I felt. About five minutes later, I turned and saw tears in his eyes. “You will never realize what your apology (道歉) has meant to me, Jimmy.” he said to me. “I hope we can become friends.”
We had lunch together that noon and we had the best talk I had ever had. Over the years at high school, we were close friends.
When I think back, I realize that, if I had not apologized, I would never have known what a lovely person Christian was.
Apologies can really change your life, so never miss the chance to tell somebody you are sorry.

D. Christian had the saddest dog eyes.
26. How did Jimmy feel after he made fun of Christian with other unkind kids?
A. Happy. B. Interested. C. Sorry. D. Bored.
27. What is the purpose of this text?
A To tell us it is important to make an apology when we hurt others.
B. To show Jimmy’s apology was unimportant to Christian.
C. To introduce Christian wasn’t lovely in fact.
D. To tell us it is unimportant to say sorry to others.

The sales pitches tempt: Blue-light-blocking glasses are supposed to protect eyes from the effects of short-wavelength light emitting from our smartphones, computer screens and LED lights. Given how much time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right? After all, eye strain is a real issue and can lead to poor sleep and even eye diseases. The glasses can cost $15 all the way up to several hundred dollars. But do they work?
Elizabeth Esparaz, an ophthalmologist (眼科专家) based in Cleveland, Ohio, says the science that manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. For starters, blue light is not just about tech devices, and it’s not always bad. “The sun emits a much higher intensity of blue light than human-made devices, of course, and it’s actually beneficial,” says Dr. Esparaz. It helps our mood, alertness and sleep-wake cycle.
The problem is blue light at night: It contains the release of melatonin. “Melatonin helps regulate our circadian rhythms (生理节奏) and makes us sleepy,” says Dr. Esparaz.
So, in theory, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses should help people who watch movies in bed or read from a tablet at night avoid sleeplessness. A 2021 review study from the University of Oklahoma that looked at 24 previous studies found that people affected by sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work fell asleep faster after using these glasses.
As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less eye strain than those using clear glasses. And a 2018 review study, also by Australian researchers, found insufficient evidence that they prevent certain eye diseases.
“These glasses aren’t going to be harmful,” says Dr. Esparaz, But, she adds, a lack of standardization in the industry means there’s no way to know if one pair is better than another. A more reliable solution: Turn on the blue-light-filtering function on your devices and limit screen time before bed. To help with eye strain, Dr. Esparaz suggests taking breaks and using lubricating eye drops.
28. What is Dr. Esparaz’s attitude toward business publicity?
A. Unclear. B. indifferent. C. Approving. D. Doubtful.
29. What can we learn about blue light from the first two paragraphs?
A. It can be beneficial. B. It may facilitate sleep.
C. It actually causes health issues. D. It merely comes from digital devices.
30. Australian studies found that wearing blue-light-blocking glasses_________.
A. helps prevent eye disease B. are not harmful to eyesight
C. contributes to no less eye strain D. benefits those with sleep disorders
31. What might be the best title of this passage?
A. Blue-light-blocking Glasses: Your Best Choice
B. Blue-light-blocking Glasses: Good or Bad
C. Blue-light-blocking Glasses: A Good Business
D. Blue-light-blocking Glasses: Smart and Cool

In a bid to reduce global electronic waste, Fairphone has created a smartphone that owners can repair themselves. What makes its technology so sustainable?
“This is my phone’s camera,” says Bas van Abel, co-founder of the Fairphone, holding a small, square component aloft. He has just removed it from his smartphone, using a tiny screwdriver.
“There are eight components in total which can be removed and replaced,” he says, as he carefully disassembles his entire smartphone, placing the camera alongside his phone battery, USB port, screen and loudspeaker.
Founded in 2013 in Amsterdam, Fairphone makes Android smartphones which can easily be exchanged, customized and repaired by their owners. By enabling and encouraging people to fix their phones, rather than throwing them away as soon as a component breaks, Fairphone hopes to help reduce electronic waste.
In 2022, 5.3 billion mobile phones were thrown away, the Belgian non-profit The WEEE Forum, which analyses electronic waste, estimates. In the US, people replace their phones every 18 months on average as new models with upgraded features are released. Most devices now come as sealed units that are extremely difficult and expensive to repair, or even produce error messages if damaged components are fixed.
Fairphone wants to break this trend by selling phones that have a longer working life.
Despite its ambition, Fairphone is still only a minor player in the mobile phone market ——since launching, it has sold around 550,000 devices. To put this into context, more than 232 million iPhones were sold worldwide in 2022. But van Abel says Fairphone is trying to prove that it is possible for companies to turn a profit selling sustainable smartphones.
Sustainability, however, comes with a high price tag. The latest Fairphone model costs £649. This is partly because Fairphone has to build everything in-house, according to van Abel. “We do all the software updates ourselves as there’s not one company in the world that supports long-lasting phones,” he says. “There’s a lot of investment needed for us to be able to do what we want to.”
32. What do we know about van Abel?
A. He was quite skillful in repairing mobile phones.
B. He created a smartphone that can repair itself.
C. He was satisfied with this sustainable smartphone.
D. He advocated recycling electronic products.
33. Why did Americans always change their phones?
A. Because the functions of the phones needed to be upgraded.
B. Because old phones were not environmentally friendly.
C Because they didn’t like using second-hand phones.
D. Because the data in the phones showed errors.
34 What can we infer about Fairphone?
A. Its various products were deeply loved by consumers.
B. Its sales profit was higher than that of iPhone.
C. It required financial and technical support.
D. It encouraged people to purchase high-capacity smartphones.
35. What can be concluded from Fairphone’s development?
A. Everything’s hard in the beginning.
B. No pains, no gains.
C. Love me, love my dog.
D. Kill two birds with one stone.

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience, watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.
Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school’s old team was to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team bad no coach, and they didn’t even practice to prepare for the game.
I was assigned (指派) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn’t believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and what I should do next.
It didn’t take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.
I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as winners could they willingly invest time and energy.
This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.

For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain, I’ve had to get used to driving on the left. What else? Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London, it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me. Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes, At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a. m till 11 p. m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a. m., but finish at 5 p. m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in America I used to go to the gym. I love sports. Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.

24. What do we about know Christian from the passage?
A. He was tall and fat. B. He was short and thin.
C. He was short and active. D. He was lovely and fat.
25. Why didn’t Jimmy talk to Christian much at first?
A. He didn’t think Christian was the type he wanted to become friends with.
B. Christian wasn’t nice to people around him after he came to the new class.
C. Christian made friends with others.
D. Christian had the saddest dog eyes.
26. How did Jimmy feel after he made fun of Christian with other unkind kids?
A. Happy. B. Interested. C. Sorry. D. Bored.
27. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To tell us it is important to make an apology when we hurt others.

D 29. A 30. C 31. B

根据第二段““The sun emits a much higher intensity of blue light than human-made devices, of course, and it’s actually beneficial,” says Dr. Esparaz (“当然,太阳发出的蓝光强度比人造设备要强得多,而且它实际上是有益的,”埃斯帕拉兹博士说)”可知,太阳散发出的蓝光是有益的。故选A。
根据第五段 “As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less eye strain than those using clear glasses. (至于眼睛疲劳,2021年澳大利亚的一项研究表明,戴眼镜的人并不比戴透明眼镜的人经历的眼睛疲劳小)”可知,戴蓝光眼镜并不会减少眼疲劳。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The sales pitches tempt: Blue-light-blocking glasses are supposed to protect eyes from the effects of short-wavelength light emitting from our smartphones, computer screens and LED lights. Given how much time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right? After all, eye strain is a real issue and can lead to poor sleep and even eye diseases. The glasses can cost $15 all the way up to several hundred dollars. But do they work?(销售宣传很诱人:防蓝光眼镜应该可以保护眼睛免受智能手机、电脑屏幕和LED灯发出的短波光的影响。

C. Because they didn’t like using second-hand phones.
D. Because the data in the phones showed errors.
34. What can we infer about Fairphone?
C 33. A 34. C 35. A
由文章第二段““This is my phone’s camera,” says Bas van Abel, co-founder of the Fairphone, holding a small, square component aloft. He has just removed it from his smartphone, using a tiny screwdriver.(“这是我手机的摄像头,”Fairphone的联合创始人巴斯·范·阿贝尔举着一个方形的小部件说。他刚刚用一把小螺丝刀把它从智能手机上取了下来。)”可知,他对这款可持续发展的智能手机感到满意。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第五段中“In the US, people replace their phones every 18 months on average as new models with upgraded features are released. (在美国,人们平均每18个月更换一次手机,因为有升级功能的新机型会发布。)”可知,因为手机的功能需要升级,美国人总是换手机。故选A。
This is partly because Fairphone has to build everything in-house, according to van Abel. “We do all the software updates ourselves as there’s not one company in the world that supports long-lasting phones,” he says. “There’s a lot of investment needed for us to be able to do what we want to.”(最新款Fairphone售价649英镑。范阿贝尔表示,部分原因是Fairphone必须在内部完成所有工作。他说:“我们自己做所有的软件更新,因为世界上没有一家公司支持耐用手机。”“我们需要大量投资,才能做我们想做的事情。”)”可知,Fairphone需要财政和技术支持。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段中“Despite its ambition, Fairphone is still only a minor player in the mobile phone market ——since launching, it has sold around 550,000 devices. To put this into context, more than 232 million iPhones were sold worldwide in 2022. But van Abel says Fairphone is trying to prove that it is possible for companies to turn a profit selling sustainable smartphones. 根据本段内容“Do some research into other artists in your area and see whether they would be interested in your exhibition. Holding an exhibition with other artists will also allow you to reduce some cost. Be sure to give other artists proper credit for their works.(调查一下你所在领域的其他艺术家,看看他们是否会对你的展览感兴趣。与其他艺术家一起举办展览也会让你减少一些成本。一定要对其他艺术家的作品给予适当的赞扬)”可知,本段的主旨主要是和其它艺术家一起举办展览,故B选项“为你的展览联系当地艺术家”符合语境,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据后文“Feel free to more works from photographers, sculptors and other artists. A wide-ranging selection will contribute to a good atmosphere. You might also consider inviting poets or musicians to perform at the event.(请随意欣赏更多来自摄影师、雕塑家和其他艺术家的作品。广泛的选择有助于营造良好的氛围。你也可以考虑邀请诗人或音乐家在活动中表演)”可知,后文提到邀请诗人或音乐家,说明展览不一定只有绘画。故F选项“你的展览不一定只有绘画”符合语境,故选F。

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Six months later, football season started.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations. We met every day and practiced passing and kicking the football. At first, some complained that even the hardest practice couldn't change the fact that they were the last. The whole team was covered by the sense of depression and failure. What I could do at that time was to company them and try to cheer them up. Encouraged by my persistence, the team gathered the spirit of trying again and practiced even harder. This time, we sweated out in the fields instead of being the audience, watching and cheering. Every inch of the field has seen the effort of my team.
Six months later, football season started. After suffering our failure on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest thrills of my life! From the game I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can influence the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves differently, and they built themselves into winners. Winners are made, not born.
