Whatever you are doing right now is determined by your thinking. All your emotions and desires are influenced by your thinking. The problem is that when you are not aware of your thinking, you have no chance of correcting it if it is poor. When thinking is subconscious, you are in no position to see any problems in it. And, if you don’t see any problems in it, you won’t be motivated to change it. What’s worse, few people realize the powerful role that thinking plays in their lives, so they don’t gain significant command of it. As a result, most people are in many ways victims of their thinking. Consider your success as a student. The single most significant variable in determining your success as a student is the quality of your thinking. Your instructors will play a role in your learning, but even the best teachers cannot get into your head and learn for you. If you lack the intellectual skills necessary for thinking well through course content, you will not be successful in school. Here is the key question we are putting to you in this book. If the quality of a person’s thinking is the single most significant determinant of both happiness and success, why not take the time to learn from the best thinkers? This book will inform you of the tools that the best thinkers use and will illustrate the activities and practice you can use to begin to emulate them, and take control of your destiny as a thinker. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of these thinking aids, helping you discover the power of your own mind and of your potential to think systematically about your thinking. This book, as a whole, introduces you to the tools of mind that will help you reason well through various challenges you face. If you take these ideas seriously and practice using them, you can improve the quality of your thinking and ultimately, the quality of your life. 4. Why do many people lack motivation to change their poor thinking? A. They are victims of emotions. B. They are unaware of the need. C. They think highly of themselves. D. They lack the academic guidance. 5. What plays the most crucial role in school success? A. The course content. B. The school environment. C. The commitment of teachers. D. The quality of an individual’s thinking. 6. What does the underlined word “emulate” mean in paragraph 4? A Make friends with. B. Win over. C. Follow the example of. D. Look up to. 7. The book is organized according to ________. A. types of life challenges B. varieties of thinking tools C. determinants of life value D. ideas of different thinkers C Last Saturday, when my grandfather got frustrated at the name of the singer of a song, I grabbed my smartphone and found it in seconds. This astonished my grandfather, who didn’t understand how I’d checked the information so quickly. I laughed and explained, but afterwards, it made me think about how much I depend on technology. When I reflected on its impact on my education, I saw that technology has been significant in many ways. Returning to the story of my grandfather, he had asked me more about how I used it and about university life. He said he thought we had an easy life compared to previous generations. I could see his point. Not only are we lucky enough to have the same educational benefits as those of previous generations, but we have so many more. We still have walk-in libraries; however, the only option for studying used to be sitting in these libraries with as many books from your reading list as you could find, yet now a single search online can immediately provide access to a huge range of resources. Interaction between students and university staff is another area that has changed considerably. We can have face-to-face time with our tutors, and also communicate using our electronic devices. The most popular means is via social media, and it has become unacceptable for messages to be unanswered for any length of time. While this puts an extra stress on the university’s academic support team, we students are greatly benefited. When we compare the student life of the past and the present, it is tempting to focus on the obvious differences in technology. In fact, students are doing what they’ve always done: embracing the resources available and adapting them to work more efficiently and to live more enjoyably. The pace of change in technology continuously gathers speed, so we have to value each innovation as it happens. 8. Why does the author mention the story of his grandfather? A. To share an interesting experience. B. To draw readers’ attention to the topic. C. To provide an example for his opinion. D. To arouse readers’ concern about a problem. 9. What is the grandfather’s attitude towards the role of technology? A. Favourable. B. Tolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 10. What is a new challenge technology brings to the academic support team? A Using various electronic devices. B. Scheduling online communication. C. Providing more flexible reading lists. D. Responding to all inquiries from students. 11. What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A. Students should make full use of technology. B. Students should value the time and enjoy their life. C. We should take technological differences seriously. D. We should resist the temptation of up-coming innovation. D We often find ourselves struggling to control our thoughts, but why is it so hard to stop our minds wandering? Research found our thoughts are less focused and under less control than we realize. In a 1996 study, participants reported more than 4,000 thoughts daily, each lasting no more than five seconds. In a 1987 study, people regarded 22% of their thoughts as strange, unacceptable or wrong. Then, is it possible to avoid unwanted thoughts, whether it’s an upcoming exam or an unpleasant conversation? The answer is: maybe. In a 2022 study, the researchers showed paid volunteers a series of slides displaying different nouns. Each noun was repeated on five different slides. As they viewed the slides, the participants wrote down a word they associated with each given noun — for example, “road” in response to “car.” Only the experimental group were told they wouldn’t get paid for repeated words. With this method, the researchers sought to create a situation when someone experiences unwanted thoughts. When the experimental group saw each noun for a second time, they took longer than the control group to come up with a new association, suggesting their first response popped into their mind before they replaced it. However, they got quicker each time they viewed the same slide, indicating that their association between the given word and their first response — the thought they were trying to avoid — was weakening. “We didn’t find evidence that people can entirely avoid unwanted thoughts,” said research leader Isaac Fradkin. “But the results suggest that practice can help people get better.” Not everyone agrees that a slideshow of random words can tell how people stop emotional thoughts. Other research suggests that avoiding thoughts can backfire. When we do it, we’re sending our brains a message. This effort labels them as something to be feared, making them more powerful. In the end, it might make more sense to take a mindful approach. “We can allow these thoughts to just be in our minds, not holding onto them too tightly and not trying to fight them,” said Fradkin. 12. What can we learn about our thoughts from paragraph 1? A. Most of our thoughts are valueless. B. We tend to focus more on negative thoughts. C. Our thoughts can occur and disappear easily. D. We can’t keep our thoughts for over five seconds. 13. Why were the experimental group told not to repeat the related words? A. To collect more associations. B. To make the task more challenging. C. To create a competitive atmosphere. D. To set up a desired experimental environment. 14. What does the underlined word “backfire” mean in paragraph 5? A. Have an opposite effect. B. Take back the wrong message. C. Reveal hidden problems. D. Cause a mental breakdown. 15. What does Fradkin advise us to do with unwanted thoughts? A. Drive them away. B. Try to understand them. C. Leave them alone. D. Learn to control them. We love our pets. In fact, for most people they are more than me re pets and become more like family members. It is likely then that their owners, at some point, are going to want photographs of their furry friends. However, pet photography presents its own special problems. ____16____ If you’re thinking of trying pet photography, here are a few pointers to get you started. Find out about your subject’s personality and habits. Where does it nod off if the sun is out? What is its favourite toy? ____17____ It’s also worth spending a little time getting to know the animal yourself. Cats dogs, horses, they all have personality, and you need to ensure they are comfortable being around you, and you around them. ____18____ If the pet is comfortable with you, and if it isn’t too nervous, fill the frame with the pet’s face. Get the eyes nice and sharp. Just like humans, this is a natural point of focus, although focusing on the nose or mouth of a dog or cat can also make for an interesting image in its own right. See the world from pets’ perspective. If you photograph a pet while you’re standing up, all you’re going to see is the top of their head and their backs, not what you want for a portrait. Get down to their eye level. Try pre-focusing your camera and just holding it at ground level so you can look up at the pet. ____19____. Bring a flash with the owner’s permission. While greeting or playing with a new pet, fire a couple of test flashes away from them to see their reaction. In daylight particularly, they never seem to mind the flash at all. ____20____. A. Think about getting in close to your subject. B. It’s worth a try just for a new angle on things. C. Animals can be unpredictable, lazy, aggressive and excitable. D. A good photograph focuses on the subject and not the background. E. If they do mind, then stick with natural light and use a white reflector. F. The more you shoot, the greater your chances of hitting that perfect shot! G. Take time to chat with the owner and observe your subject to gain some insight. I vividly remember the day when my husband and I set off on a new journey to Tanzania. I raised my eyebrows and sighed. “Mom, I don’t think this costume is right,” I said. “Maybe the makeup will add something,” Mom replied hopefully. Somehow Mom had convinced me to play the Fish Footman in Alice in Wonderland. I can’t say it’s been the time of my life. “What if I forget my lines?” I hesitated. “Oh Riley, is that what you’re afraid of? I know you’ve been rehearsing for two months, you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.” Mom said, kneeling down and hugging me. The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup room. When the makeup was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped. “Mom! I can’t go onstage like this!” I cried. “Why not?” “I’d be a laughing stock (笑柄)! ” “Riley, look around you! You’re not the only one in an odd costume.” “What if we just sneak out? No one will miss me.” I whispered. Mom’s lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. “Riley, I’m going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that’s the end of it.” Then mom disappeared into the audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on. The two boys dressed as Two of Clubs (梅花2) near me chatted casually about this and that. Suddenly, they asked, “You’re awfully quiet. Is this your first show?” I tried to respond, but my voice caught in my throat and refused to escape. I coughed and nearly yelled, “YES!” The Ace of Diamonds (方块A) sitting nearby laughed. “The audience will certainly hear you if you talk that loud. But you might have to clear your throat first, she chuckled. I gave them a weak smile. “Don’t worry about us,” the Ace said. “We’re only teasing.” “Yeah,” the Two said. “When you’ve done as many shows as we have, projecting will be second nature to you.” 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: When my name was called, I stepped onto the stage uneasily. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Suddenly I was determined to make a lasting impression. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5CBCAA 6-10CBBAA 11-15BBCCB 16-20 CABAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 江西省宜丰中学2023-2024(下)创新高二6月月考英语试卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. D. A. Using various electronic devices. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了科技对教育产生的影响和给学生的学习生活带来的便利。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段关键句“Last Saturday, when my grandfather got frustrated at the name of the singer of a song, I grabbed my smartphone and found it in seconds. This astonished my grandfather, who didn’t understand how I’d checked the information so quickly.”(上周六,当我祖父对一首歌的歌手的名字感到沮丧时,我抓起我的智能手机,几秒钟后就找到了。这让我的祖父大吃一惊,他不明白我怎么这么快就查到了这些信息。)可知,作者在第一段中提到祖父对现代科技的惊叹;根据第二段关键句“When I reflected on its impact on my education, I saw that technology has been significant in many ways.”(当我反思它对我的教育的影响时,我发现技术在很多方面都很重要。)可知,下文主要介绍了科技对教育产生的影响,由此可推断出,作者提到他祖父的故事是为了吸引读者对文章话题的注意力。故选B项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段关键句“Returning to the story of my grandfather, he had asked me more about how I used it and about university life. He said he thought we had an easy life compared to previous generations. I could see his point.”(回到我祖父的故事,他问了我更多关于我如何使用它和关于大学生活的问题。他说,他认为与前几代人相比,我们的生活很轻松。我明白他的意思。)可知,作者的祖父认为在科学技术的帮助下,我们的生活更轻松、更便捷了,由此可知,祖父对科技作用的态度是支持的,认为科技是有利的。故选A项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段关键句“We can have face-to-face time with our tutors, and also communicate using our electronic devices. The most popular means is via social media, and it has become unacceptable for messages to be unanswered for any length of time. While this puts an extra stress on the university’s academic support team, we students are greatly benefited.”(我们可以与导师面对面交流,也可以使用电子设备进行交流。 根据最后一段关键句“In fact, students are doing what they’ve always done: embracing the resources available and adapting them to work more efficiently and to live more enjoyably. The pace of change in technology continuously gathers speed, so we have to value each innovation as it happens.”(事实上,学生们正在做他们一直在做的事情:接受可用的资源,并调整它们去更高效地工作和更愉快地生活。技术变革的步伐在不断加快,所以我们必须在每一项创新发生时予以重视。)可知,学生应该接受并充分利用科技,去更高效地工作和更愉快地生活,由此可知,从最后一段可以得出的结论是学生应该充分利用技术。故选A项。 D We often find ourselves struggling to control our thoughts, but why is it so hard to stop our minds wandering? 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了我们经常发现自己很难控制自己的思想,但为什么要阻止我们的思想游离那么难呢?研究发现,我们的思想比我们意识到的更不集中,更不受控制。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Research found our thoughts are less focused and under less control than we realize. 根据第二段中“As they viewed the slides, the participants wrote down a word they associated with each given noun — for example, “road” in response to “car.” Only the experimental group were told they wouldn’t get paid for repeated words. With this method, the researchers sought to create a situation when someone experiences unwanted thoughts.”(当他们观看幻灯片时,参与者写下与每个给定名词相关的单词——例如,“汽车”对应“道路”。只有实验组被告知,重复的单词不会得到报酬。通过这种方法,研究人员试图创造一种情境,让人们产生不想要的想法。)可知,实验组被告知不要重复相关单词是为了建立理想的实验环境。故选D项。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Not everyone agrees that a slideshow of random words can tell how people stop emotional thoughts.”(并不是每个人都同意随机单词的幻灯片可以告诉人们如何停止情绪化的想法。)以及“When we do it, we’re sending our brains a message. This effort labels them as something to be feared, making them more powerful.”(当我们这么做的时候,我们是在向大脑传递一个信息。这种努力给它们贴上了可怕的标签,使它们更加强大。)可推知,其他研究表明,避免思考可能会适得其反,故可猜测划线单词backfire为“适得其反”的意思,结合选项A项Have an opposite effect“产生相反的效果”意思一致。故选A项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In the end, it might make more sense to take a mindful approach. “We can allow these thoughts to just be in our minds, not holding onto them too tightly and not trying to fight them,” said Fradkin.”(最后,采取一种有意识的方法可能更有意义。弗拉德金说:“我们可以允许这些想法在我们的脑海里存在,不要把它们抓得太紧,也不要试图与它们抗争。”)可推知,弗拉德金建议我们对于处理不想要的想法可以不管它们。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We love our pets. Cats, dogs, horses, they all have personality, and you need to ensure they are comfortable being around you, and you around them. 【答案】16. C 17. G 18. A 19. B 20. I can’t wait to inform you of the relevant details that will definitely attract you a lot. To foster students’ correct outlook on labor, two courses, planting vegetables and traditional handcrafts are available to students in each grade this year in our school. Full of curiosity, I take these courses. Making handicrafts is one of my favourite, where I gained a fundamental glimpse of essential life skills such as sewing a button and knitting a scarf. It was surely a rewarding experience, enriching my after-school life and helping me form the good habit of laboring. Most of the students are fascinated by the courses because they offer an alternative to our busy school life. Not only can we get relaxed but also we can gain a higher moral value on life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: When my name was called, I stepped onto the stage uneasily. The bright lights blinded me for a moment, and I felt the weight of the audience’s expectant gazes. Despite that, my muscle memory took over. We had rehearsed so many times that I was like a robot, reciting my lines in the most monotone (单调的) voice imaginable. A small part of my brain whispered that I had said these lines much better in rehearsal, but I pushed that voice away. I just wanted to get off stage as fast as possible. Soon, the end of my scene was approaching, and I grew uncomfortably aware that the audience had indeed been very quiet during it. Had I done something wrong? Did they not like me? Paragraph 2: Suddenly I was determined to make a lasting impression. I remembered the Two of Clubs and the Ace of Diamonds, their easy confidence. They, too, had started somewhere, likely just as nervous and uncertain as I was now. Then I straightened my spine, cleared my throat, and yelled with all the force I could muster. Obviously, the audience heard me. As the dialogue began, I found my voice, clear and strong, resonating through the theatre. I moved with purpose, embracing the absurdity of my costume and transforming it into a character that was both comical and endearing. With each passing minute, my confidence grew, fueled by the audience response of laughter and applause, their enjoyment tangible proof that I had overcome my fears. As the final curtain fell, Mom found her way backstage, her eyes shining with pride. “You were amazing, Riley,” she whispered. In that moment, I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone, despite the initial hesitation and fear, had led me to discover a strength within myself that I never knew existed. 词汇激 行为类 ①接近:approach/come near/draw near ②大喊:yell/shout ③克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 ①紧张的:nervous/strained ②恐惧:fear/dread 【点睛】[高分句型1] We had rehearsed so many times that I was like a robot, reciting my lines in the most monotone (单调的) voice imaginable.
