Sustainable Campus Initiative: Student Project Grants
The University Sustainability Office (USO) invites students to submit proposals for innovative projects aimed at reducing our carbon footprint. This initiative encourages students to think creatively about how they can make a tangible environmental impact on campus.
Grant Levels:
Seed Grant (Up to $ 500): This grant is designed for individuals who want to lead awareness campaigns or small-scale projects, such as pilot recycling programs or single-use plastic reduction campaigns. These initiatives can significantly raise awareness about sustainability issues among students and staff, providing the first step in broader environmental action.
Impact Grant ($ 501 - $3,000): For projects involving at least two departments, this grant supports collaborative efforts aimed at bringing about tangible changes in campus infrastructure. Examples include energy-saving lighting systems, waste diversion projects, or sustainability-focused renovations. The aim is to have measurable, long-lasting impact on the campus environment.
Legacy Grant ($ 3,000+): This grant supports long-term solutions that have the potential to be implemented across all campuses. Legacy projects must have clear, permanent environmental benefits and are expected to continue even after the initial funding period. These projects require the support of a faculty advisor, demonstrating their academic or institutional significance.
Key Dates (2026):
April 15: Proposal submission deadline.
May 10: Shortlisted candidates will be notified for an interview.
June 1: Funding awarded.
Evaluation Criteria:
Originality (30%): Does the project offer a fresh perspective that can inspire others?
Scalability (40%): Is there potential to expand this project to other campuses or institutions?
Cost-efficiency (30%): Do the environmental benefits justify the project’s budget and investment?
Note:
Projects that are purely theoretical without a practical application on campus will not be considered. All equipment purchased with the grant remains the property of the USO and must be used for the designated project.

The binder (活页夹) stared back at me. Yellowing papers and black-and-white photographs spilled out its sides. In handwritten Spanish, the label on its cover read Historia Antigua. Ancient History. This was clearly my grandfather’s handwriting. Within the first few pages, Abuelo had recounted centuries of our family’s history, including diaries, travelogues and letters from Abuelo’s youth — a treasure trove (宝库) of memories and research.
From that day on, I mostly read the Historia Antigua together with Abuelo. We discussed language, identity, and history; we drew and redrew family trees, and reviewed ancestors’ names and backstories as though they’d be coming over at any moment.
Recently, I began traveling the country to discuss my book about the search for traces of Abuelo’s father. What I’ve realized is that time and inertia (惰性) remain the biggest challenge to hearing our own stories. Once the guardians of the answers are gone, we are more likely to be left with heaps of documents to sort through — birth certificates, DNA results, unlabeled photographs — rather than hours of stories.
For those of us still lucky to do so, we must ask questions of our parents and grandparents now. Ask about otherwise ordinary objects that could contain clues about the past. Record kitchen table conversations or organize talk show-style interviews between older and younger relatives, with the rest of the family as the audience. If you are of an older generation, it is your turn to speak. Think about how you can make these stories come alive, and what tools you can use to spark interest among younger relatives.
Family stories are currency for survival. They make their way into the traditions we pick up along the journeys of our lives. They define who we are in worlds foreign and familiar, remembered now but forever at risk of being forgotten.
4.What is Historia Antigua mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. A story collection. B. A book on Spanish ancient history.
C. Grandfather’s diaries. D. A collection of family documents.
5.What can prevent people from learning about family stories?
A. The lack of interest in history. B. The complexity of family trees.
C. The delay of recording them. D. The absence of written records.
6.What does the author suggest readers do?
A. Reorganize family documents.
B. Spend more time reading family history.
C. Create family stories to entertain our family.
D. Engage older generation to preserve family stories.
7.What message about family stories is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A. They are hard to understand.
B. They are best left as mysteries.
C. They are essential for personal identity.
D. They are necessary to honor old generations.
Nowadays, various forms of technology and their applications have transformed our teenagers’ lives and our experiences as parents, most often not for the better. As the parent of a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old, I can say that not a week has gone by in nearly a decade that the use of such technologies hasn’t led to some form of disagreement. And at this point it’s clear that such is the experience of households all over the country. Endless elements of day-to-day life, including especially for young people learning and socialization, have been negatively impacted.
That’s why I am drawn to Jonathan Haidt’s work, The Amazing Generation. The first part includes background information on the rise of smartphones and the “attention economy”. It also has many infographics (信息图) and visuals, including one of my favorites, “Screen Time Calculator That You Can Use to Shock People. ” “1 hour per day=15 full days per year. 2 hours per day=1 full month per year. Etc.” This is a page I wouldn’t mind seeing hung on classroom walls, including the college classrooms where I teach.
The second part is a fictional story about six young people. In one scene, heavy social media user Alex finally joins his phone-free friend Jax at a skate park. Then, we see Jax trying out different skating skills in the background, by the end falling onto the ground after another heroic attempt, which are in contrast to Alex’s phone screen, which he has been glued to, from a nearby bench, first searching for skating tips then watching world championship skating highlights. The author ends by noting that while it is often thrilling to have the world at your fingertips, it’s hard to deny the losses that accumulate when real life trial-and-error is replaced by passive viewing.
That’s what The Amazing Generation can do — get young people thinking more critically about the products that shape their everyday lives.
8.What can we learn about the author’s family from paragraph 1?
A. They look down upon each other’s learning ability.
B. Arguments constantly occur over the use of technology.
C. Disagreement mostly happens between the two children.
D. They envy the harmonious relationship in other households.
9.What is Screen Time Calculator about?
A. The key to learning math.
B. The value of teenagers’ time.
C. The art of classroom management.
D. The amount of time spent on technology.
10.What does Jonathan Haidt intend to show by using the story of Jax and Alex?
A. In-person experience matters a lot.
B. Training without guidance leads nowhere.
C. Too much screen time does harm to eyesight.
D. Champions’ experience is helpful for beginners.
11.Which of the following best describe The Amazing Generation?
A. Plain and amusing. B. Boring and hard to understand.
C. Practical and educational. D. Imaginative and well-received.
Black Friday isn’t what it once was. Less than 15 years ago, it was common for people to wake up at early hours to drive to a store, where they would stand in line, waiting for the doors to open in order to get the best deals.
Those people stay, but not in the numbers they used to, thanks to online shopping. But as AI becomes fixed in people’s habits, it could have an increasingly large role in Black Friday.
A growing number of buyers will be depending on AI to help them find deals. Some 33% of the people in a 2025 survey said they plan to use AI as part of their holiday shopping double the number who did last year. Many say the tech could help them with gift ideas and product discovery. A separate study from another marketing platform (平台) found that 56% of buyers say they’ll use AI tools among Black Friday.
AI can do a lot more than help people think of creative gifts, of course. GenAI can research prices and recommend the best deal, in some cases even buying the products for you. And a growing number of people are taking advantage of that. Traffic from AI platforms to retail (零售) sites in July was up by 4,700%, according to Adobe Analytics. And the company says there will be an increase in AI usage of between 515% and 550% this holiday season, compared to 2024.
To use AI for finding deals, first make a clear list or what you want to buy. Be very specific about the product details when asking the chatbot. For example, if you want a computer, mention the exact model and your preferences. The AI will then search for the best prices and may also suggest cash-back apps. However, always check the results on the store’s website yourself, as prices can change quickly. This method saves you time and makes holiday shopping easier.
12.What do we know about Black Friday from the first two paragraphs?
A. It was started about 15 years ago. B. It has been influenced by the Internet.
C. It changes people’s shopping habits. D. It has become less popular than before.
13.How does the author describe the growing trend of using AI while shopping?
A. By listing figures. B. By quoting experts.
C. By defining concepts. D. By comparing platforms.
14.What does the author suggest readers do with AI tools in the last paragraph?
A. Rely on the results entirely. B. Reconsider your own preferences.
C. Take the unstable prices into account. D. Check the cash- back apps regularly.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: a decision- maker in pricing B. AI: a game-changer for shopping
C. Online shopping: a thing of the past D. Online shopping: a booming industry
