The River Nile is the longest river in the world. It is about 6, 670 kilometres in length. It covers about 3.4 million square kilometres, which is about 10% of the area of Africa.
The main source (源头) of the River Nile is the White Nile in the small country called Burundi. In Sudan, the White Nile is joined by the Blue Nile, which lows from Ethiopia. From this point on, the river is called the River Nile. In Egypt, the River Nile runs across its flat land to Cairo, where it forms a very large delta (三角洲). It then goes into the Mediterranean Sea.
In the past, summer rains and melting snows made the River Nile flood its banks every autumn. These floods left behind water and rich mud, letting farmers grow crops along the riverbanks, in the delta, and to the south of it. By building a number of dams, the Egyptians control the low of water in the River Nile. The biggest dam is the Aswan High Dam. It holds floodwater back in Lake Nasser. The people who live along the River Nile no longer have to deal with the yearly flooding of their homes and land. Small canals (运河) have been built to carry water to the fields and villages. Water rushing over the dam wall is also used to produce electricity.
When Lake Nasser gets hot, lots of its water changes into water vapour. The fertile (肥沃的) mud that would spread over the fields while flooding now goes down to the bottom of the lake. Without this mud, farmers in the River Nile valley now have to use chemical fertilisers (化肥) on their crops. Moreover, the soils in the delta are becoming saltier because there is less freshwater flowing down the River Nile and more saltwater from the Mediterranean Sea can flow into the delta.
Most towns and cities in Egypt and Sudan are near the River Nile. For locals, the river is important for moving goods and people, especially in the flood season when road transport is difficult. Ships can travel along most of the River Nile in Egypt and Sudan, except when the water is very low.

Dragon dances have played an important role in Chinese festivals since ancient times. They have become a symbol of Chinese culture. The following facts can bring you more surprises!
Dragon dances can date back to the Han dynasty. They were then used in a special activity to show love and respect for ancestors (祖先)and wish for some good things, but they later developed into an entertainment activity. In the Tang and Song dynasties, most people began to celebrate festivals like the Chinese New Year with dragon dances.
The dragon dance costume (戏服) is made up of a large dragon’s head, and a long tail-like body in a number of parts, which are raised on poles. The dragon body, sometimes covered with a huge red cloth, is woven (编织) with pieces of thin bamboo like long and round pipes. The costume is also made of grass, paper and so on. It can be from 2 meters to 100 meters or even over 1, 000 meters long. In our opinion, the longer the dragon’s costume is, the more good luck it will bring!
As an important part of Chinese culture, Chinese dragons have many good qualities. So people perform (表演) dragon dances in the hope that they will become powerful, lucky and rich. In ancient times, when it was dry for a long time, people performed a dragon dance. And dragon dances after planting crops were also a way to keep them safe from insects. Now, dragon dances are performed during some special events or festivals as a method of driving away evil spirits and welcoming rich and lively times. So, the meanings of dragon dances change as time goes by.
With the spread of Chinese people and culture all over the world, dragon dances have been brought to every corner of the world. Among the Chinese New Year celebrations, dragon dances are especially attractive. Along with lion dances, they are often the most eye-catching part of the Chinese New Year parades.
From Chinese New Year’s Day to the Lantern Festival, dragon dances can be seen around the world, especially in places where Chinese people gather together.
So, dragon dances are becoming more and more popular.

Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are put off by one big problem: what to play? Here are some questions to help you decide.
What kind of music do you like?
Many instruments are versatile (多用途的), but some are more suited to certain types of music. For example, there are some classical plays for the saxophone, but people connect it more with jazz. The saxophone is not a permanent (永久的) feature of many orchestras (管弦乐队). Some instruments may lend themselves to others better than to the music you like, so think twice before you start.
Do you want to play with other people?
Think about your long-term future as a musician. If you want to play with other people, what kind of instrument would be the most practical? The attraction of playing a dazzling solo instrument like trumpet (小号), violin, flute or lead guitar might fade (逐渐消失) when you realize how many other people are competing with you to get the main part with the same instrument! If you want to play rock music, there will always be a need for bass players or drummers, and if you feel like being part of an orchestra, the bassoon is a great bet to make sure you are always needed.
Where are you going to practise?
Many people live in flats and practising the drums, for example, will drive your neighbours crazy. Think about where and when you are going to practise, as well as the patience of the people you live with or near. Electric musical instruments like the piano, drums, guitar, and even violin give you the option of playing into the night using headphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. Otherwise, you may need to go to a school or a community centre to practise.
How much money can you spend?
This is quite a big factor. A lot of instruments can be bought in different price ranges, for example, guitars. But this doesn’t change the fact that many, such as the piano, are always pretty expensive. If you can’t afford your chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else’s or hire one?
Are there any physical limitations (限制)?
If you’re small and don’t like lifting heavy instruments, you won’t want to carry around a double bass. Apart from that, use your common sense, and don’t let your physical shortcomings put you off. Who says small skinny people can’t play the tuba (大号)? It’s true that some wind instruments require a lot of lung (肺) power, but with the right coaching, everyone can develop the right skill.
Still not sure?
Talk to people you know who already play instruments. They might even let you try theirs. It’s also a good idea to find an experienced music teacher, preferably one who plays several different instruments, who can give you some advice and push you in the right direction.
If you find an instrument you love and that suits your needs, you’ll find the time spent choosing was well worth it. Good luck with making your choice!

Do you want to be an astronaut in the future? Every year on April 24, it’s Space Day of China. It’s a day to celebrate the country’s growth in space exploration. The successful manned space missions (任务) are a big part of it. Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, as many as over 20 Chinese astronauts have gone to space. Being an astronaut is cool but sometimes dangerous.
What problems do astronauts face?
In space, astronauts face many problems. There is little gravity there, which influences their bodies. Also, being away from family and friends and stuck in a tiny spaceship for a long time can make them feel sad or stressed out. What’s more, if something goes wrong on their mission all of a sudden, they have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure. That’s why astronauts have to be smart, strong and ready for any challenge before they can go to space.
How are astronauts trained?
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely. “Eight types, covering more than 200 subjects of training, are set.” Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical training, it also includes basic science knowledge and mock (模拟) missions. Before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.
One of the hardest parts of the training for astronauts is the underwater training. This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space. Huang explained that astronauts wear diving suits (潜水服) that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring.
Huang said that one astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.
Train hard to work in space
China has achieved great success in space exploration. A number of Chinese astronauts have been to space 31 2003. Being an astronaut is cool but 32 , so training is necessary.

You can see cucumbers (黄瓜) hanging on vines (藤蔓). Wheat sprouts (发芽) from the soil. Purple eggplant (茄子) flowers come out. But you’re not on a farm. You are inside Yuegong, a closed lab at Beihang University in Beijing.
An important experiment was once carried out in the lab. It is called Yuegong-365. Eight volunteers took turns to live by themselves in the closed lab for a year. In January 2018, four volunteers finished spending 200 days in the lab. This set a world record for the longest stay in a self-contained (自给自足的) space, China Daily reported. Then, another four volunteers lived in the lab and the experiment ended in May that year.
The experiment could give scientists information that can be used to create better living areas for astronauts in space, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Life in Yuegong was busy. Volunteers got up at 6:30 am and went to bed at 11:30 pm. Growing food was their daily activity. There were more than 30 kinds of vegetables and fruit for them to grow and eat. They even ate insects in order to get protein (蛋白质).
They also recorded their body temperature, blood pressure and personal feelings every day. Scientists outside the lab used the information to monitor (监控) their health.
Was living in the lab boring? No! With internet, volunteers could go online to read the news or watch TV shows. They also read books, wrote and even rode bikes. “There’s no time to be bored,” volunteer Hu Jingfei said.

Learning a language is a long course that requires time, love and devotion. With the rise of language apps, it is perhaps more popular than ever. But the apps aren’t supposed to be used alone to learn a language. To language learners, apps are a kind of tool. But that doesn’t mean you have to be trapped in them.
Not everyone can attend proper language classes, what can they do? Here are some creative ways for them to learn a new language. Follow these, they will discover the truth about language learning.
Be a child, watch cartoons
One of the most common advice for language learners is to watch films and shows in the language they are learning. But to the beginners, it’s difficult to understand without the help of subtitles (字幕). They can watch children’s cartoons instead. These cartoons are often made up of basic expressions and words. Moreover, cartoons usually come with clearer and slower pronunciation, which will help learners understand without subtitles.
Let the words flow
One has the risk of making mistakes when trying to practise in public or with local people, so start small instead. Speak to your pet or an object around the house. Tell them about your day or describe how you feel.
The goal is to get used to sounding the letters and getting the words out. As you grow more confident, come up to the waiter at a real French restaurant (or whatever language you may be working on) or a local person.
A foreign stamp
A good method to test your writing skills is to keep a penfriend. Ideally, find someone who is fluent (流利的) in the language you are learning. And he is also learning your language. Through the exchange of letters, you get to practise your writing skills. What’s more, everyone gets a friend.

If our time is our most valuable thing, maybe we should be surprised how willingly we waste it.
I’ve read when smokers give up the habit, their lungs (肺) begin to repair themselves. So could it be true that our brains are boring by hours of phone use?
One day, something in me touched me and I decided to stop my phone addiction (上瘾) habit to live my life fully.
Of course, a complete change was impossible because the phone was part of our daily life. My new rules allowed for basic uses such as texting, calling, checking the news and making planned searches. Also, online shopping and social media (媒体) use should be limited. But my No. 1 rule was simple: Do not pick up the phone as a reflex (反射动作) to kill boredom.
Reducing my screen time has caused a lot, which is quite interesting. Just a few days after giving up the habit, I’ve read two books and I’ve had more creative ideas for writing projects in the last week than I had in the last year. More interestingly, I’ve also had more active communication with someone I don’t know, whether it’s giving out a praise, laughing at something funny, or taking an extra moment to hold open a door.
We’ve given the little computers in our hands far more of our time and attention than they should. They’ve become crutches (拐杖), giving us excuses. But the funny thing is, when we put them down, we’ll fill our time in a wise way.
And we may just discover a new enjoyment of old pleasures or new ones, which makes our brains fresh and new instead of being weak in ways we’d almost forgotten.

From TV to New Media
A recent report said that China’s TV usage dropped from 70 percent to less than 30 percent in 2022. Also, TV sales dropped from 48.94 million in 2019 to 36.34 million in 2022. So why do we watch less TV? Here are some interviews with some students.
“I seldom watch TV mainly because of the boring advertisements.” Song Ruiqi from Zhejiang said, “They always show up when a show or a movie is halfway through its run. So my family and I hardly turn on the TV at home.”
He Liyan from Jiangsu believes that mobile phones or computers can easily meet our needs for watching videos. TVs often have hidden fees and complex (复杂的) interfaces. These problems have led to situations where young people aren’t interested in them, while the elderly find them difficult to use.
“We have a busy day, leaving us with little time to watch TV. Also, the TV shows we enjoy are different from the ones our parents like. In my family, I can hardly get a chance to control the remote when they sit on the sofa.” said Zhang Linhui, Guangdong.
“Different from traditional TVs, which require us to be at home to watch, video websites can be seen anytime and anywhere.” Wang Hexuan, Sichuan, added, “Besides, their bullet-screen (弹幕) function allows people to express their opinions. This experience is a pleasure that traditional TV watching cannot provide.”

Will ChatGPT be good for humans?
ChatGPT is a type of AI that has been “trained” by looking at over 8 million web pages. You can ask it anything and it will give you an answer. You can also ask it to write texts. The technology is so hopeful that some people believe it will take the place of Google in the near future. ChatGPT is a great example of a modern technology that is causing mixed feelings. Below we will see some of ChatGPT’s good points and bad points.
ChatGPT: good points
Because ChatGPT is free to use and easy to use, it could make learning easier. When we use Google, we have to look at individual (单独的) web pages to find answers to our questions. With ChatGPT, we are getting information supported by thousands of other web pages with the information being given to us in simple and easy to understand language.
ChatGPT can also help people who struggle (挣扎) with language production. ChatGPT can be used to help people who don’t speak the same language communicate, and help people who have language-based disabilities to communicate better. When used in this way, ChatGPT could be a great tool for bringing the world closer together.
ChatGPT: bad points
ChatGPT is amazing, but it also makes people worried. For thousands of years, students have been required to find information using books and, more recently, the Internet. This requires a level of effort that usually rewards students who work hard and allows learners to see lots of different information. With ChatGPT, finding information becomes much easier than using the Internet or a book. This could make cheating (作弊) much easier, and make students feel their hard work isn’t rewarded.
Conclusion
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that ChatGPT will become bigger and more popular.
Will ChatGPT be good for humans?

What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns (阿尔卑斯长号角) were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why use them? Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen (牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they’re mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled (口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
Did you know it’s also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal (信号) tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.

One has the risk of making mistakes when trying to practise in public or with local people, so start small instead. Speak to your pet or an object around the house. Tell them about your day or describe how you feel.
