There are some sports events that are not so popular as football and
basketball. Some of them are even very strange. Let's have a look.
____________________________________________________________ Tug-of-war
This event started in 1900 and left the
Olympics in 1920. The team wins if they pull
the rope past the point first. Interestingly, more
than one team from a country can join in this
event. ___
10
______________________________ Rope Climbing
It was first as an Olympic sport in 1896.
The climber who spends the shortest time getting
to the top is the winner. The rope was 15
meters long at first. Years later, it became 8
meters for some reasons. After 1932, there was
no rope climbing in the Olympics.

_____________________ Race Walking
In race walking, walkers have to win the
race by walking. To make sure that they do not
run, race walkers must have one foot on the
ground all the time. Race walking has been an
Olympic sport since 1904. Men join in the 20-
kilometer race and the 50-kilometer race; women
only race 20 kilometers.

二、选择型阅读理解(D)
主题:人与社会——体育活动 文体:说明文 难度:★★★★☆
Sports can help you keep fit and close to nature. However, whether
you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should
realize that the sport you choose might have a great influence on the
environment.
15
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up
not only large areas of countryside, but also lots of water. Besides, all
sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its
courses(球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental
changes. For example, in the dry places of Portugal(葡萄牙) and Spain,
golf is often held responsible for(为……承担责任) serious water
shortage(短缺) in some local areas.
16
There are also many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is
one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special
equipment except a good pair of shoes, and you don't have to worry
about resources and the cost. Simple and free, power walking can also
help you stay healthy. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your
heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can
make you feel less anxious(焦虑的), sleep well and keep thin.
17
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using
environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled
materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better
replacements(替代物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports
centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside
or other open spaces. There are no special requirements for you to start
your membership(会员身份). And best of all, it's free.
18

Paragraph 2?( )
