For children, space is magical — a whole world is out there, with so many things to learn and stories to read. Here are some children’s books about space and the solar system.
Mae among the Stars by Stasia Burrington
This beautifully illustrated picture book is attractive to young kids. It was inspired by the first African American woman in space, Mae Jemison. It tells the story of Mae as a little girl, who always knew she had big dreams about space. This is a great addition to a young kid’s collection, as a reminder to hold tight to dreams and never give up.
Space by Libby Jackson
This beautifully illustrated book gives kids a look at 50 women from around the world who were involved in exploring space in some way, from the 19th century to the present day. This is a perfect gift for young kids who want to know more about some of the lesser-known scientific achievements related to space exploration.
Chasing Space by Leland Melvin
This is Melvin’s story about being a football player-turned-astronaut, along with his recovery from an injury that nearly left him deaf. Kids will love reading his story about how he faced challenges and advanced ahead, and he also includes DIY experiments for kids to try, and a section of full-color photographs.
System and Beyond by David A. Aguilar
The book is full of beautiful illustrations of space, and is perfect for kids of all ages, exploring various planets and the solar system. Unlike other kids’ space book, this is a National Geographic book written and illustrated by an award-winning astronomer and space artist. Aguilar is also the former Director of Science Information and Public Outreach at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
1. What do Mae among the Stars and Space have in common?

It is no secret that China has an amazingly rich history and culture. My first exposure (接触) to Chinese culture came totally by chance. One day, I entered my grandfather’s personal library and took a book named Tao Te Ching (道德经) from one of the shelves. As an 8-year-old, the book’s content completely confused me, but it provided me with an early connection to a beautiful and great philosophical (哲学的) tradition that still influences me today.
Around this time, I also came across several cartoons heavily inspired by traditional Chinese culture and martial arts (武术) such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat. Both cartoons (卡通) describe beautiful landscapes and buildings similar to those found in classical Chinese paintings. This further developed my interest of the rich and beautiful culture.
At school I began studying Chinese. My interest in the language developed early on, combining my love of travelling with my love of meeting new people. Later on, my interest in the language developed into exploring widespread Chinese culture. I wanted to challenge myself in a totally new linguistic (语言的) surroundings and listen to the lives and stories of others in their own language. I have been lucky enough to have lived in China for around three years. I loved every second I spent there and there is never a shortage of things to see and do, people to meet, and foods to enjoy.
It is safe to say that my journey to studying Chinese has only just begun and these first steps are only a drop in the ocean of lifelong learning, but as the Chinese philosopher Laozi says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

C
In the northernmost edge of Colombia sits the coastal town of Acandí. Access to the town is only by water or air; there is no road that leads there. The residents there are faced with the struggles of balancing livelihoods while protecting biodiversity.
In the past, traditional community fishing methods, passed down by the elders, focused on the reasonable fishing and management of resources. However, the introduction of large-scale trawling vessels(拖网渔船) decades ago gradually depleted the area’s fishing resources, leading to damage to marine(海洋的) life seriously.
Jesús Antonio Julio Cuestas, who serves in the region’s conservation and management of marine resources, stresses the bad impact of these developments and calls for new fishing techniques. “Fishing and conservation co-exist as long as we have good management practices and reasonable use of our fishing resources,” says Cuestas. He and other officials actively monitor fishing activities in Acandí. Each morning, they visit the fish markets to gather data on fishery resources—including prices and sizes—to monitor the state of the local fishing industry.
Along with Cuestas, the fishers work to reduce their impact on the marine ecosystem. By changing fishing methods and adopting new practices, they aim for a more balanced approach to fishing. “This year the local fishermen have not used the trawl net s that were causing the death of the leatherback sea turtles,” explains Cuestas proudly. Changes include the efforts of boats to protect the seagrass that serves as feeding grounds for marine life and an end to fishers throwing net s where turtles lay their eggs.
This marine reserve in Acandí, Cuestas believes, is their greatest treasure. He attaches great importance to working together with local residents to improve the quality of life while preserving the marine ecosystem. By doing so, he imagines a picture where individuals from the fishing community can pursue various careers, such as engineers or lawyers, proudly stating that they are the products of the fishing tradition in Acandí.
8. What does the underlined word “depleted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Reused. B. Restored.
C. Explored. D. Reduced.
9. Why does Julio Cuestas call for new fishing techniques?
A. To cut down on the costs of fishing.
B. To improve the income of local residents.
C. To promote the well-being of marine wildlife.
D. To spread traditional community fishing methods.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The aim of the changes to fishing methods.
B. The efforts to preserve marine ecosystem.
C. The results the trawl net s have brought about.
D. The impact of fishers on the local environment.
11. What is Julio Cuestas’s attitude towards Acandí’s future?
A. Confident. B. Uncaring.
C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍的是哥伦比亚最北部的沿海小镇Acandí,该地的居民在保护生物多样性的同时努力平衡生计。
【8题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“In the past, traditional community fishing methods, passed down by the elders, focused on the reasonable fishing and management of resources.(在过去,传统的社区捕鱼方法是由长辈传下来的,注重合理捕捞和资源管理。)”同时根据划线词后面的内容“leading to damage to marine(海洋的) life seriously.(导致海洋生物严重受损。)”
根据第二段中“However, the introduction of large-scale trawling vessels(拖网渔船) decades ago gradually depleted the area’s fishing resources, leading to damage to marine(海洋的) life seriously.( 然而,几十年前引进的大型拖网渔船逐渐耗尽了该地区的渔业资源,导致海洋生物受到严重破坏。)”以及第三段中“Jesús Antonio Julio Cuestas, who serves in the region’s conservation and management of marine resources, stresses the bad impact of these developments and calls for new fishing techniques.( Jesús负责该地区海洋资源保护和管理的Antonio Julio Cuestas强调了这些发展的不良影响,并呼吁采用新的捕鱼技术。)”可知,因为Jesús注意到了这种捕捞方式对海洋野生动物带来了消极的影响,因此为了促进海洋野生动物的繁荣,其呼吁使用新的捕捞技术。故选C。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Along with Cuestas, the fishers work to reduce their impact on the marine ecosystem. By changing fishing methods and adopting new practices, they aim for a more balanced approach to fishing.(渔民们与Cuestas一起努力减少对海洋生态系统的影响。通过改变捕鱼方法和采用新的做法,他们的目标是实现更平衡的捕鱼方式。)”以及“Changes include the efforts of boats to protect the seagrass that serves as feeding grounds for marine life and an end to fishers throwing net s where turtles lay their eggs.(变化包括船只努力保护海草,海草是海洋生物的觅食地,渔民不再在海龟产卵的地方撒网。)”可知,本段主要介绍的是保护海洋生态系统,渔民们与Cuestas所做出的种种努力。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“By doing so, he imagines a picture where individuals from the fishing community can pursue various careers, such as engineers or lawyers, proudly stating that they are the products of the fishing tradition in Acandí.( 通过这样做,他想象了这样一幅画面:来自渔业社区的个人可以从事各种职业,比如工程师或律师,并自豪地宣称他们是Acandí渔业传统的产物。)” 故选A。
D
Sponges (海绵) — is there anything they can’t do? For thousands of years, humans have used dried natural sponges to clean up, to paint and as containers to consume liquids like water or honey. Whether artificial or natural, sponges are great at collecting tiny pieces with their many small holes.
Recently, researchers in China published a study describing their development of an artificial sponge that makes short work of removing microplastic pieces. The tests show that when a specially prepared plastic-filled solution (溶液) is pushed through one of their sponges, the sponge can remove microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics from the liquid. Researchers tried it in everything from tap water and seawater to soup from a local takeout spot.
According to Guoqing Wang, a materials chemist at Ocean University of China and co-author of the paper, the sponge is adjustable. By adjusting the temperature, the sponge can be made to have more or fewer holes, which affects the size of the microplastic pieces collected. The sponge, if ever produced on an industrial scale, Wang says, could be used in wastewater treatment factories to remove microplastics from the water or in food production facilities to avoid polluting water.
There are shortcomings to the sponge’s possible adoption, though. The sponge is made mostly from starch and gelatin (淀粉和明胶), which are important to the food industry, meaning that there could be intense competition for the key ingredients in the future. Besides, starch and gelatin are able to break down naturally and harmlessly. However, the process developed by Wang and his co-workers to make their sponge uses formaldehyde, a highly poisonous chemical, and there were small amounts of this in the sponge itself.
When it comes to dealing with microplastic pollution in the ocean, Alice Horton at the United Kingdom’s National Oceanography Center says what she is confident about is that efforts to remove microplastics after they have already reached the ocean are probably certain to fail. “I don’t think there is anything we can do on a large enough scale that will have any impact,” she says. “We have to stop them getting there in the first place.”
12. What special characteristic of the new sponges is shown during the tests?
A. Their environmental friendliness.
B. Their operability and low production costs.
C. Their good performance in catching plastic pieces.
D. Their possibility of helping break down microplastics.
13. What will be a possible problem if the new sponges are produced in large numbers?
A. The high cost of recycling them. B. The poor quality of the products.
C. A shortage of the raw material. D. A lack of skillful operators.
14. What’s Alice’s opinion in regard to removing plastic from the ocean?
A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Many hands make light work. D. Prevention is better than cure.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To advertise a new sponge. B. To introduce a new invention.
C. To stress the damage of plastic. D. To popularize the sponge’s usage.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了研究人员发明了一种人造海绵,可以有效快速捕捉微塑料碎片。文章介绍了这种海绵的工作原理以及存在的问题。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The tests show that when a specially prepared plastic-filled solution (溶液) is pushed through one of their sponges, the sponge can remove microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics from the liquid.(测试表明,当一种特殊制备的塑料填充溶液被推过他们的海绵时,海绵可以从液体中去除微塑料甚至更小的纳米塑料)”可知,在测试过程中,新海绵在捕捉塑料碎片方面性能良好。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The sponge is made mostly from starch and gelatin (淀粉和明胶), which are important to the food industry, meaning that there could be intense competition for the key ingredients in the future.(这种海绵主要由淀粉和明胶制成,这对食品工业很重要,这意味着未来对关键成分的争夺可能会很激烈)”可知,如果新海绵大量生产,可能会出现原料短缺。故选C。
【14题详解】

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel (吵架) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

【答案】范文
Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she pushed the door open and entered the house, she found her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sunk down into the sofa. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
At that time, her mother came back and touched her hair gently, which called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, fatigued but relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’ arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently. It dawned on Jenny that Mum’s love was invisible and intangible, but always surrounded us.

This beautifully illustrated picture book is attractive to young kids. It was inspired by the first African American woman in space, Mae Jemison.
4. How does the author like the book Tao Te Ching?
A. It encourages him to go to the library. B. It improves his habits.
C. It has a long-lasting influence on him. D. It makes him know his grandfather better.
5. What makes the author more interested in Chinese culture?
A. Watching some cartoons. B. Describing Chinese paintings.
C. Living abroad for long. D. Cooking Chinese food.
6. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Chinese culture differs greatly from others’.
B. Travelling takes up much of the author’s time.
C. The author keeps a diary every day when he lived in China.
D. The author learns languages in real surroundings.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. My Grandpa’s Influence on Me B. My Exploration of Chinese Culture
C. My Travel Diary in China D. My Exposure to Language
