To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What’s that strange sound coming from the forest in the moonlight?
It’s an owl, of course!
All day long, seated comfortably on a tree, the owl is sleeping or at least he’s trying to snooze because it’s sometimes hard to close the eyes with all the sounds made by the little birds and animals in the forest! The owl hunts only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big, round eyes. Any little animal around had better watch out! The owl mostly eats small animals like mice, but it wouldn't say no to another bird if it gets the chance!
The owl uses its fantastic hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side, using its sharp eyes to follow the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special, soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls are such good hunters that they can even catch a fly(苍蝇) in the air!
The owl is quiet most of the time, except when you get too close to its home. The owl is a great mother, who will protect her babies by opening her feathers angrily. An owl will even hurt people if she thinks her babies are in danger!
An owl has no teeth, so it eats an animal whole. All the parts of the animal that the owl can't digest(消化) will end up as small pieces. If you find these small pieces, you know you are near an owl's home.

In the park, you see a group of people, all looking up at the sky. Without thinking about it, you look upwards, too. Why?In the theater, someone begins to clap hands and
suddenly the whole room joins in. You do, too. Why?
Sometimes we feel we are acting correctly when we do the same as others. The more people follow an idea, the better we think the idea is. It's the social proof(社会认同感)that works.
The scientist Asch did an experiment. It shows how social proof can influence(影响)us. In a
room, a man sees Line 1,and next to it are three lines(A,B,C). A is longer,C is shorter and B is as long as Line 1. He must tell which of the three lines is as long as Line 1. When the man is alone, he gives the correct answer B. Then, five other men go into the room, and each of them gives the
answer C as they were told to. Now the man changes his idea and gives the answer C. Asch got the same result many times among different people.
Why do we act like this? Well, in the past, following others was a way to keep away from danger. Suppose that 5,000 years ago you were hunting(打猎) with friends. Suddenly, they all ran away. What would you do? Would you stay there? No, you would run, too. We are descendants(后代) of those who copied others' action. It is so deeply planted in our mind that we still use it now.
Social proof has special power. For example, people often make use of it in their ads. So be careful when someone says his product (产品) is “the most popular”.
33. At the beginning of the passage, the writer leads in the topic by .
A. telling a story B. giving examples
C. answering questions D. showing a map
34. According to Paragraph 3,the experiment by Asch shows .
A. following others is always right
B. social proof may change people's ideas
C. it's difficult to do the experiment
D. people can study better if they are alone
35. The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refers to .
A. running with others B. hunting with friends
C. copying others' action D. doing something different
36. According to the passage, we can infer (推断) that .
A. products in the ads are the best
B. it's important to run with others anytime
C. we mustn't copy others' action to keep safe
D. we need to think twice before following others
