Before arriving in China, I had read various books relating to China, and my fascination were increasing.
Therefore, when I arrived, I couldn’t have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the big cities and everyday life — I couldn’t wait to explore.
Yet despite my passion, learning Chinese hadn’t even entered my mind. This wasn’t laziness, but
rather fear at the thought of trying to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world. Besides this, I was living in Shanghai, an international city, with many people speaking English as a second language — I decided English would be enough.
However, after a year in China I began to observe that while many foreigners did not speak Chinese, there were plenty who did. Perhaps it was achievable after all? In addition, I felt uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn’t even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.
Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me, I have also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what’s been said.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it’s not only achievable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a fascinating country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, take up the challenge and take the leap of faith.
24. Why didn’t the author learn Chinese when he arrived in China in 2017?
A. He showed no passion for China. B. He was unwilling to make the effort.
C. He avoided learning a second language. D. He avoided doing something difficult.
25. What caused the author to learn Chinese?
A. His regret about starting learning late. B. Support from many friends around him.
C. Eagerness to take up the challenge. D. A thirst to prove his gift for language.
26. What does the underlined word “insurmountable” in the 5th paragraph mean?
A. Valueless. B. Difficult. C. Unnecessary. D. Unacceptable.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Love breaks down difficulties. B. Hard work pays off.
C. Hard work is the key to success. D. Bravery opens up a new world.
C
There are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available in local markets. But while those red juicy strawberries look fresh, consumers have no way of knowing how long the fruit can be stored at home. The same goes for distribution centers and supermarkets.
Now, the food technology startup OneThird, located in the Netherlands, is looking to change that with an infrared (红外线)scanner that can accurately predict how long fresh fruits and vegetables will last. The startup is named OneThird because one-third of food is wasted due to spoilage(变质)every year.
The startup's founders were inspired by a UK company that uses this type of technology in the medical field and decided to see if it was applicable for food. “I looked at the challenges in the food-supply chain and found out that 40 percent of food waste is fresh produce. One of the biggest causes of waste is that nobody knows shelf life.” founder and CEO of OneThird, Marco Snikkers said. Quality inspections at farms and distribution centers are done manually(手动地). An inspector checks the fruits and vegetables and makes notes about the size and quality. Then the food is sent to consumers without considering travel time or how long the produce will remain usable.
Using the infrared scanner at the distribution center means that inspectors can use the information to approve shipments that will ensure the produce can be distributed on a timely basis. This means that a shipment of ripe tomatoes will not be sent long distances away.
OneThird's scanner combines the technology of optical scanners, image modeling, and Artificial Intelligence to provide accurate shelf-life predictions. The startup found that the technology can reduce up to 25 percent produce waste that was caused by spoilage. “Global food waste has an enormous environmental impact; reducing global food waste cuts global greenhouse gas emissions and promotes global food security," said Jacob Smith, a climate expert from the University of Maine.
28.What problem does OneThird aim to solve?
A.The high cost of storing fresh fruits and vegetables.
B.Inefficient quality inspections at distribution centers.
C.Food waste caused by uncertainty about its shelf life.
D.Consumers' difficulty judging the freshness of produce.
29.What inspired OneThird to come up with the idea of using infrared scanner?
A.The use of the device in another field. B.Observation of the food-supply chain.
C.Consumer demands for fresher produce. D.Experts' advice on food waste reduction.
30.What can we learn about the manual quality inspections?
A.They are time-consuming and costly. B.They are not performed at a regular time.
C.The inspectors tend to make wrong judgement. D.The shipping time is not taken into consideration.
31.What's Jacob's attitude to OneThird's effort?
A.Approving B.Doubtful. C.Tolerant. D.Dismissive.

When Mark Twain visited Florence (佛罗伦萨) in 1867, he dutifully visited the city's museums, churches, and tombs. But as he stood by the Arno, he began to sense the Italians' insistence that it was a river, not a stream. “They all call it a river, and they honestly think it is a river, do these dark and bloody Florentines,” he complained, “I might enter Florence under happier circumstances a month hence and find it all beautiful, all attractive. But I do not care to think of it now, at all.”
It's normal to feel uncomfortable outside your home culture. Feelings of discomfort, dislocation, and overload among travelers are referred to by many as “culture shock.” But Susan Goldstein, a professor at the University of Redlands says, “Though the term has existed for many years, ‘Culture shock’ implies a dramatic, unexpected, negative event. Though many travelers will experience such challenges, a real sense of shock is untypical. So untypical that many researchers no longer use the term.”
It was the vivid description of culture shock by Canadian researcher Oberg, written in 1960 in response to his own multicultural experiences, that won over audiences. The researcher spoke of the adjustment process as “an occupational disease of people who have suddenly been transplanted abroad”—a “disease” that progressed from a honeymoon phase, through rejecting the new environment, to finally adjusting fully to it. By the 1970s many researchers adopted the idea that, like physical illnesses, culture shock progressed through a remarkably consistent and universal set of stages.
Modern research, however, suggests that the experiences of adaptation are individual, not universal. “People will have their ups and downs, but for the most part, they will become increasingly comfortable and competent over time, Goldstein says. And while many connect the causes of culture shock to the host culture itself, an individual's internal expectations and differences are just as important.
As for Mark Twain, the moody author was able to ride out his feelings of upset and dislocation while traveling. He eventually finished out his European tour - and in his bestselling travel memoir The Innocents Abroad, famously remarked that travel is “fatal to prejudice and narrow-mindedness.” With the right attitude–and the willingness to seek help if you need it –it's more than likely that you, too, can adapt and grow in new settings, building new memories–and toughness— with each new stamp in your passport.
32. How did Mark Twain feel about Italians' insistence?
A. Annoyed. B. Calm. C. Uninterested. D. Curious.
33. What can be inferred about culture shock?
A. It would lead to physical diseases. B. It was regarded as an avoidable thing.
C. It was named for people's adjustment. D. It had gained wide acceptance by the 1970s.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Suggestions about culture shock. B. A change in understanding culture shock.
C. Stress of the importance of culture shock. D. A criticism of previous idea of culture shock.
35. Why is Mark Twain mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To remember him. B. To inform and anticipate.
C. To conclude and encourage. D. To make the ending humorous.

“If after the first 50 pages of a book you don't get engaged, you're allowed to stop reading and try again later when you feel ready for it,” my father told me.
My father holds this 41 responsible for his lifelong love of literature. As a busy labourer, he has regarded reading books as an almost sacred 42 . He feels a strong, perhaps irresistible 43 to read frequently and a lot.
I don't think my father 44 to hand the advice down to me. He's not the sort to give advice and I'm not the sort to 45 it. But I find it's the advice that's delivered 46 that.is most likely to be listened to.
I like this advice“reading first 50 pages”, for the generosity and respect it extends to a book's 47 and their craft. Meanwhile, this advice gives a person permission to 49 reading.Nobody, it implies, need force themselves to struggle through a book they're not 50 .
I particularly like the 51 advice to return to a book“when you feel ready for it.” It's a 52 that reading is naturally relational and that the readers need time.
Even when I'm more than ready to stop reading by page 50, 53 the exercise feels worth doing. Just like stopping swimming halfway makes the muscles in my legs ache 54__it uses them in a different way from cycling. But in both cases, it's a satisfying kind of hurt because it's a 55__ of getting stronger.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the the contest, there came the news. I had become one of the winners. Excitement raced through my heart, and a profound sense of accomplishment enveloped my mind. Never before had I tasted victory in any competition, making this achievement particularly significant. While awaiting my award on stage, an overwhelming surge of emotions washed over me. I firmly grasped the award, a deep appreciation for the efforts in this moment swelling within me.
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. Her pride radiating, she congratulated me warmly and enveloped me in a tight hug. I expressed my gratitude for her insistence on my participation in the contest. Without her encouragement, I would have never unearthed my love/passion for writing. I conveyed to her my newfound joy in writing and my aspiration to pen further tales. The experience had taught me that diligence and perseverance could pay off.

W: Bill, can you help me in the garden at the weekend?
M: Mum! I’m going to go skating with Jill this weekend.
W: Oh right. I got that mixed up with the next weekend. Are you still going to the movie this evening?
M: Yes.
Text 2
W: Excuse me. Which platform does the next train to London leave from?
M: It leaves from Platform 2 at 10:32.
W: So there’s still twelve minutes left.
Text 3
M: I thought that was boring. It was way too long. And the acting wasn’t very good.
W: It had a lot of big stars in it.
M: Yes. But the story itself was terrible.
Text 4
M: Do you mind if I leave the meeting early? I have a headache.
W: Oh, not at all. Why don’t you see a doctor?
M: I’ll make an appointment on my way home. I’ve been sick since Tuesday.
Text 5
W: Do you know what the problem is?
M: Not yet, madam.
W: I have a meeting at three and it’s a thirty-minute drive from here.
M: Give me a little more time. I’ll have you on the road again soon.
Text 6
M: Dragon Home Electronics. This is John speaking. Can I help you?
W: Hi, I saw a poster on the underground that says you’re having a sale on refrigerators.
M: Yes, madam.
W: Could you tell me the way to your store from Flora Square?
M: Certainly. First, you take the B or the F train to Broadway. Take exit 3, and head down Brich Street until you see our sign.
W: That’s B or F train to Broadway, exit 3, down Brich Street.
M: That’s right. However, we don’t open for another hour. You know it’s only 9 o’clock now.

M: Good morning. I have an interview scheduled with Mr. Black for 2 o’clock. It’s for an article I’m writing for next week’s edition of The Addington Chronicle.
W: Oh, yes. That means you’re Mr. Woods. I actually gave you a call last evening.
M: Oh, really? I didn’t notice that.
W: That’s all right. I called to say that Mr. Black had to cancel the interview. He had to attend an urgent board meeting at our main office in Dallas.

W: Wow, what’s it called?
M: The New Yam Festival.
W: Back home at this time of year, we celebrate “The Day of the Dead”.
M: The dead? It’s like Halloween in the United States, isn’t it?

W: Is it near an underground station?
M: Yes, it is. It’s about five minutes’ walk from Marble Arch station. And it’s very close to Hyde
Park. It’s one of the nicest hotels in London.
W: Great. I’d like a double room for three nights. And can you check the price?
M: Yes, sure. I’m afraid hotels in London are really expensive but of course they are comfortable. A lot of people think that London’s the most expensive city for tourists in the world.
W: Yes, last year we stayed two nights in a hotel that cost over £200 a night!
M: Right, I’ve booked it for you, £220 a night. When you come out of the underground station, go along Edgware Road for about 400 meters and it’s on the right, opposite a cinema.
W: Brilliant. Thanks very much.

Every four years I watch this amazing event. I believe that sport brings people together and the Olympics are very important. Volunteers are a necessary part of the Olympics. I’m sure that I can make a valuable contribution. As someone very interested in sport, I believe that I’m in an excellent position to help athletes and visitors with any problems they have. I’m a skier and snowboarder and I know better what they want. I think that’s the most needed. I have never been a volunteer before but I love new challenges. I’m flexible and ready to take on any tasks. By the way, I sent you an email with my personal information and some of my sports experiences for your reference. Thank you for considering my application. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
