Elephant seals spend most of their time in the ocean. For about seven ___2___ of the year, they are in the water. Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be ___3___ in the ocean. Sean Kennedy, a gas engineer in England, does this often while out on the job. One day Sean was working, as usual, while next to a busy roadside. Nearby was a rabbit hole, which caught his eye. With a closer look, the man found a letter inside. But when he picked the letter up, he realized that there were actually three in total. It would make sense to suppose that these letters were blown there by the wind or some animals took them there. But Sean was certain it was not possible. “If so, they would be scattered. But these three letters were together,” he explained. “They’d been put there.” It appears that the letters were simply a way for the sender to keep in touch with the receiver, though there’s no way of knowing whether the conversation was with a relative, friend or pen pal. In fact, the name of the sender is not clear enough to see what it is. What Sean did know is that the letters were addressed to “Miss Jane” in York and one letter was postmarked (盖邮戴于) in 1976 and others from Cambridgeshire and Kent in 1982. In an effort to solve this mystery and return the letters to their owners, Sean shared details of his find, along with pictures online. Although many have shared it, no one has come forward to claim (认领) the letters. Sean guessed that the people involved with these letters might no longer be alive, but the still thought it was worth a try and was happy to keep them safe during the time. “I’ll be happy to hand them over (把他们交出). It’s a mystery which is unresolved (未解决的) at the moment,” the man said. 11. What does the underlined word “scattered” probably mean? A Put away. B. Very dirty. C. Badly broken. D. Thrown around. 12. Which of the following is unknown about the letters? ① Who sent them ② When they were sent ③ Why they were shared online. ④ The relationship between the two sides. A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ③④ 13. What can we infer from the passage? A. These letters have been claimed. B. Miss Jane is now old but healthy. C. Sean has handed over the letters. D. Many people helped to find the owners. B Having a bloody nose can make some people nervous, but in most cases, nosebleeds are easy to stop and rarely (很少) serious. Around 60%of people will experience a bloody nose in their lifetime. Nosebleeds are most common in children from 2 to 10 years old and in adults aged 50 to 80. Common causes of nosebleeds include dry air and injuries to the nose or other parts of the head. Blowing your nose too often when you have a cold can also lead to nosebleeds. You probably already know how to stop a bloody nose right away, but it’s important to do it properly and safely. Always sit up straight when your nose is bleeding, and never lie on your back. One of the biggest mistakes in first aid is that you should lean (倾斜) back with a bloody nose, but the best thing to do is lean forward. The blood needs to go somewhere, and if the person leans back or lies down, it will most likely go down his throat, possibly causing choking. And try not to put tissues (纸巾) into your nose. Pinching (捏住) the nose properly stops or slows the bleeding. Hold the nose for at least five minutes. Do not let go to check for bleeding until at least the first five minutes are up. If you can, keep the pressure on for longer, After five minutes, see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, pinch again, but keep it up for 10 minutes this time. Remember: Don’t let go to check for bleeding until the 10 minutes are up. If bleeding doesn’t stop after that time, repeat it for another 10 minutes if necessary. Avoid activities such as heavy lifting, blowing or picking your nose for a day after the nosebleed has stopped. Remember that if you can’t stop the nosebleed with these methods, see a doctor immediately. 14. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. Usually, a nosebleed is a very serious thing. B. Children as young as 5 may often get nosebleeds. C. About three out of five people don’t have nosebleeds. D. Nosebleeds are less common in adults over the age of 50. 15. What does Paragraph 3 explain? A. Why you shouldn’t worry about nosebleeds. B. Why you shouldn’t put tissues into your nose. C. Why you should stop nosebleeds immediately. D Why you should lean forward not back with a bloody nose. 16. Which of the following does the author agree with? A. Check your nose for bleeding after 3 minutes. B. Just pinch your nose for five minutes. C. Repeat pinching the nose as needed. D. Pinch your nose as hard as you can. 17. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To show the importance of first aid. B. To tell us how to prevent nosebleeds C. To call on people to get first-aid training. D. To introduce how to stop a nosebleed properly. You can now climb down 419 meters to have the deepest sleep below ground. Guests must journey down through a slate mine (板岩矿) to reach the hotel. The hotel has four private twin-bed cabins (小木屋) and a romantic grotto (洞穴) with a double bed. Then, try and relax for the evening with a free meal to enjoy at the picnic table. After that just head off to bed. It’s also important to note it’s not exactly warm down there.
