Children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from disturbing those concentrating in the loft y seats above. The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya) To fight low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a travelling library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region’s nomadic (游牧的) people. Currently the service focuses on children, but with more funding they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the titles they carry. While living in Manhattan for some 15 years in the 1980s and early 1990s, Nannini only commuted (通勤) on the one train, given the subway system’s bad reputation. But after relocating to New Jersey for several years where subway is not an option, Nannini found that absence did make the heart grow fonder — maybe even for pizza rats. During her visit back to New York, Nannini nodded, noticing improvements in the subway’s facilities. While Nannini was waiting for a train, a bench on the platform opposite caught her attention due to the ever changing faces and characters. They were people of different accents, colors and beliefs. They were from all walks of life, a diverse mix of New Yorkers all there for their own different reasons. Having learned the teenagers’ popular “End of the Line” challenge — boarding trains at random and riding them until their final destination; Nannini decided to visit every first and last stop across the NY subway’s lines with her beloved camera. Nannini’s “End of the Line” experience saw her traveling some 665 miles across 26 routes in New York city. She took over 8,000 photos of the final stations, as well as the communities they served. In many cases, she rode the routes two or three times over to ensure she got “the shot”. “The project really shows me how important the sub way is, and how sustainable it makes our lives,” she said. “It’s often said that my photos show the end of the lines —the last stops,” she said. “But the end of the line is indeed the start for so many people. That made me think about who the people and the communities that live at the two ends are and what it is that the subway means to them.” Nannini was proud of her set of images directly challenging the traditions of story telling, which echoed both the boredom and excitement of travel on tracks. Nannini enjoyed taking her time, starting her challenge in 2013 and only shooting the final photos last year. Her first monograph on the terminal stops of the NY subway was released in April 2023. “When you drive in the suburbs, you don’t have those encounters,” she continued. “People enter your life on the subway. That’s what strikes me most on my journey on tracks, and you can’t experience this anywhere else.” 19. How did Nannini find the New York subway during her revisit? A. It turned out fascinating and encouraging. B. It takes 15 years to improve its facility. C. It holds a better reputation than before. D. It has become one of her commuting options. 20. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The diversity of New Yorkers’ daily life. B. The inspiration for Nannini’s subway shots. C. The popularity of “End of the Line” challenge. D. The challenges of Nannini’s job as a photographer. 21. What can we infer from Nannini’s “End of the Line” experience? A. Her way of telling stories was appreciated by the communities. B. Her photography is highly expected by the encounters she photoed. C. She expressed gratitude to all the subway riders at the final stations. D. She found life on tracks was more interesting than life on wheels. 22. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. “End of the Line” Challenge: A New Experience in NY Subways B. The Road Home: Rita Nannini’s Record of her Subway Ride C. Last Stop to New Start: A Photographer’s Rediscovery of NY Subways D. New Yorkers’ Routine: A Surprising Mixture of Boredom and Excitement 【答案】19. A 20. B 21. D 22. 根据第一段“During her visit back to New York, Nannini nodded, noticing improvements in the subway’s facilities(南尼尼回到纽约时,她点了点头,注意到地铁设施有所改善。)” 故选A项。 根据第二段“While Nannini was waiting for a train, a bench on the platform opposite caught her attention due to the ever changing faces and characters(南尼尼在等火车时,对面站台上的一个长椅吸引了她的注意,因为上面的人脸和角色总是不断变换着。)”以及“Having learned the teenagers’ popular “End of the Line” challenge — boarding trains at random and riding them until their final destination; Nannini decided to visit every first and last stop across the NY subway’s lines with her beloved camera.(在了解了青少年们流行的‘终点线’挑战——即随机登上火车并一直坐到终点后,南尼尼决定带着她心爱的相机,走访纽约地铁线路上的每一个首发站和终点站。)” 根据最后一段““When you drive in the suburbs, you don’t have those encounters,”she continued.“People enter your life on the subway. That’s what strikes me most on my jouney on tracks.”(她继续说:‘你在郊区开车时,你不会有这样的邂逅。人们是在地铁上走进你的生活。这就是我在轨道旅途中最让我震撼的事情。’)”可推理出,南尼尼认为乘坐地铁的生活比开车的生活更有趣,故选D项。 【22题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“During her visit back toNew York, Nannini nodded, noticing improvements in the subway’s facilities(在回访纽约期间南尼尼点头称赞,注意到地铁设施的改善。)”、第四段“It’s often said that my photos show the end of the lines — the last stops,” she said. “But the end of the line is indeed the start for so many people. That made me think about who the people and the communities that live at the two ends are and what it is that the subway means to them”(‘人们常说我的照片展示了线路的终点——最后一站。’ 以及最后一段““When you drive in the suburbs, you don’t have those encounters,” she continued. “People enter your life on the subway. That ‘s what strikes me most on my jouney on tracks.’(她继续说:‘你在郊区开车时,你不会有这样的邂逅。人们是在地铁上走进你的生活。这就是我在轨道旅途中最让我震撼的事情。’)”可知本文主要讲的是摄影师丽塔·南尼尼重返纽约后对地铁始发站和终点站拍照的经历及其感慨;C项“Last Stop to New Start: A Photographer’s Rediscovery of NY Subways(最后一站到新起点:摄影师重新发现纽约地铁)”能够概括文章主题,适合作为最佳标题。故选C项。 C Nature has the power to change an element’s identity with time and space. This is evident by the transformative effect Britain’s deep coal mines have been showing after decades of being one of the biggest reasons for pollution. Now, they’re being employed to supply green energy to the town of Gateshead. The town is the first place to experience something like this in the country, but the success of the phenomenon has encouraged the local government to apply it to other towns. In 2021, coal was just producing 2% of electricity in the UK. Most of the electricity in the country is being supplied through oil and gas. This has resulted in massive abandoned coal mines all across the country. As years went by, these mines were flooded with water, making it a source of geothermal (地热的) energy, which is used to generate heat and electricity. Gateshead hosts such a mine in its town, whose council, therefore, launched a mine water project in March 2023. The authorities put in a large central heat pump in the mine. Mine water can often sit with a temperature of 45℃. The water is then pumped using appliances to home heat pumps. The process increases the temperature further. The water then goes ahead and warms up the interior space and home water supply. After the heat from the water has been used, it’s sent back to the mine where it again goes through the same process. The project has been successful in supplying low-carbon heating to 350 high-rise buildings, a college and several office buildings. “Recovering heat from mine water below the ground within abandoned coal mines provides an exciting opportunity to generate a low-carbon secure supply of heat, benefiting people living or working in buildings on the coalfields,” said Gareth Farr, head of heat and by-product innovation at the Coal Authority. The water resources through the mines are estimated to be two billion cubic meters or half the amount of water in Loch Ness. Farr added, “With many millions of people living upon abandoned coalfields in Great Britain, the potential for mine water heat could be significant.” 23. What does the town of Gateshead feature? A. It’s been one of the most heavily polluted areas. B. It has the most deep coal mines nationally. C. It mainly relies on geothermal energy. D. It is the first one to reuse abandoned coal mines. 24. Why were many coal mines abandoned in the UK? A. They were quite remote. B. Prices of coal declined a lot. C There weren’t enough miners. D. The UK puts cleaner energy first. 25. What is implied in the last paragraph? A. The number of abandoned coal mines is stably increasing. B. The future of sourcing energy from coal mines is promising. C. The dependence on water resources in the UK is increasing. D. The technique to take advantage of mine water is impressive. 26. What is the text mainly about? A. The opportunity to generate new energy and benefit people living beside the pump. B. The possibility of generating heat and electricity from coal mines in Britain. C. The way of obtaining low carbon heating from water in abandoned coal mines. D. The future of implementing renewable energy projects in abandoned coal mines. D 24. D 25. B 26. 根据第一段中“This is evident by the transformative effect Britain’s deep coal mines have been showing after decades of being one of the biggest reasons for pollution.  Now, they’re being employed to supply green energy to the town of Gateshead. The town is the first place to experience something like this in the country, but the success of the phenomenon has encouraged the authorities to apply it to other towns.(这一点在英国深层煤矿显示出了转变的效果,几十年来它们一直是污染的主要原因之一。现在,这些深层煤矿受雇为盖茨黑德镇提供绿色能源。该镇是全国第一个体验到这种现象的地方,但这种现象的成功促使当局将其应用到其他城镇)”可知,Gateshead镇是全英国第一个重新利用废弃煤矿的地方。故选D。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“In 2021, coal was just producing 2% of electricity in the UK. Most of the electricity in the country is being supplied through oil and gas. This has resulted in massive abandoned coal mines all across the country. (2021年,煤炭仅占英国电力的2%。这个国家的大部分电力是通过石油和天然气供应的。这导致了全国各地大量的废弃煤矿)”可知,由于英国优先发展清洁能源,导致了全国各地大量的废弃煤矿。故选D。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The water resources through the mines are estimated to be two billion cubic meters or half the amount of water in Loch Ness. Farr added, “With many millions of people living upon abandoned coalfields in Great Britain, the potential for mine water heat could be significant.””(据估计,通过这些矿山开采的水资源约为20亿立方米,相当于尼斯湖水量的一半。 根据第一段中“This is evident by the transformative effect Britain’s deep coal mines have been showing after decades of being one of the biggest reasons for pollution. Now, they’re being employed to supply green energy to the town of Gateshead. The town is the first place to experience something like this in the country, but the success of the phenomenon has encouraged the authorities to apply it to other towns.(这一点在英国深层煤矿显示出了转变的效果,几十年来它们一直是污染的主要原因之一。 C选项“The way of obtaining low carbon heating from water in abandoned coal mines.(从废弃矿井水中获得低碳供暖的实现途径。)” C。 D Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language. The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies, Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture. The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity. The author’s personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting. In this book, Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects and the official “Italian” language, and the Southern “question” or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians. 根据文章第一段“Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.(移民的故事很吸引我,尤其是18世纪以来来到美国的意大利人的生活故事。 根据文章第二段“Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.(对他来说,更大的问题是“选择”哪个意大利,是他从贫穷的家庭继承来的,与他认为粗鲁甚至有些残忍的古老传统和习俗有关的意大利,还是他从文学和艺术书籍中找到的,向他展示了一个拥有现代文学文化的国家。)” 故选A。 根据划线单词下一句“These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.(这些情节突出了他父母从家乡带来的日常习俗,这与Joseph“融入”美国文化的愿望相冲突。 根据最后一段“The author’s personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting.(作者的个人变化充满了对意大利文化和政治景观的引用和评论。 If you think you’re a pessimist and there’s no hope of ever turning it around, then think again! Bishan Library (Singapore) Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises (格架), standing out for its modern art, is meant to resemble a modern glass tree-house. Glass pods of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet air y corner for reading throughout the building. Macquarie University Library (Sydney, Australia) A stunning combination of being both cutting-edge and sustainable, this building with a green roof, was made from recycled materials and designed to look like an eucalyptus tree(桉树). B It was not until photographer Rita Nannini left New York that she grew fascinated by the city’s subways. While living in Manhattan for some 15 years in the 1980s and early 1990s Nannini only commuted (通勤) on the one train, given the subway system’s bad reputation. New Yorkers’ Routine: A Surprising Mixture of Boredom and Excitement C Nature has the power to change an element’s identity with time and space. C. There weren’t enough miners. D Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. I enjoyed reading this book. It is personal, moving, educational and entertainment. I hope you will enjoy it too! 27 Why is the author interested in stories of immigrants? A. He left his birthplace to go to America. B. He was a child of Italian immigrants. C. He lived in America as an immigrant. D. He likes to learn the Italian language. 28. Which of the following is more difficult for Joseph to deal with? A. Seeking out the the true Italian within himself. B. Inheriting traditions and customs from his family. C. Bridging the gap between the rude and modern culture. D. Finding the country with a modern literacy culture. 29. What does the underlined word “clash” mean in paragraph 3? A. Interaction. B. Divide. C. Difference. D. Conflict. 30. What can we learn from Joseph’s life? A. He developed the desire of fitting in American culture after his first visit to Italy. B. Deep understanding of Italian culture and politics helped him settle inner changes. C. Joseph’s parents hardly required him to inherit traditional Italian culture and customs. D. Issues concerning Italian life had a positive impact on the relation within his family. If you think you’re a pessimist and there’s no hope of ever turning it around, then think again!
