(2024·江苏徐州·二模)This year is the Year of the Dragon, and I want to share the cool story of how dragons became part of the Chinese animal signs.
Once upon a time, dragons were strong but didn’t have horns (角). They could fly in the sky and swim in the sea. The dragon wanted to be the leader, more than the Tiger King. So, it battled with the tiger, but neither could win. The Jade Emperor decided to end their fight. So he asked them both to heaven. On his way to heaven, the dragon borrowed horns from a rooster.
In heaven, the Jade Emperor was impressed by both the dragon and the tiger. He made both of them kings: the dragon of the sea and the tiger of the land. That’s how the dragon joined the animal signs. The dragon stayed in the water, keeping the horns to show his power. After hearing this, the rooster became angry, so we can still see roosters with red faces today.
The dragon is not only the magical creature in the Chinese animal signs, but it’s very important in Chinese culture. It symbolizes power and magic. Emperors called them selves Sons of the Dragon, because dragons represent wildness, wisdom, and spirituality, with many stories about them.
I wish you all a life as grand as a dragon’s, reaching for dreams with wisdom.

Two young boys, Mose and Pete, were playing with their baby sister, Polly. Uncle Tom was sitting at the table. He was a large strong man with a kind face and an air of dignity (尊严) . However, while this was happening in Tom’s cabin, something very different was happening in his master’s house.
When they were getting ready to go to bed. Eliza, a young slave from the house, came to their door.

“Tom, why don’t you run away? The trader will sell you to a plantation, where they kill slaves with hard work and no food! There’s still time. Come on, get up, and I’ll get your things ready.”
Tom looked at her with sad eyes and said “No, I'm not running away. You heard what Eliza said! Master needs money to keep the farm and the people. I’m strong. I’ll be OK. Yao Jian has been teaching in the Sandun Primary School in Datong, Shanxi Province for more than 20 years. In 1998, he chose to teach village children after graduation. At that time, the conditions of the village school were terrible. Some students had to bring chairs from home to school because there weren’t enough chairs. The number of students became smaller and smaller because many villagers took their children to cities. Some teachers left the school to search for better jobs too. The teachers who stayed there had to teach all the subjects.
“I come from the poor countryside and know how important education is for village children. I will continue teaching in the school till the last student leaves.” Yao said.
Because of his great work, Yao was made the headmaster of the school in 2004. In the same year, his wife started working as a teacher there too. They took good care of the students as if they were their own children. Yao used to have a heart-to-heart talk with other teachers so that they could feel at home in the school and like their work.
Many of the school’s graduates have entered college. Jiao Shufeng, one of them, said, “Yao was my favourite teacher. He helped me form good study habits. I was lucky to have him as my teacher when I was young. Inspired by him, I plan to be a teacher and help more left-behind children to get better education.”
11.How long has Yao been a village teacher?
12.Were the conditions of the school poor at that time?
13.Why did some teachers leave the school?
14.When did Yao’s wife become a teacher?

(2024·江苏盐城·二模)It was a warm spring day, Chen Beier, a TV host from Hong Kong, was on her way to a small Atule’er in Sichuan.
The small village sits on a cliff (悬崖) of eight hundred meters high. People could only get up to it by climbing a 2,556-step metal ladder. Chen Beier was making a program about it.
In October, 2021, China reached an important goal. It had done away with extreme poverty (贫穷). Many people outside couldn’t believe it. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make the program No Poverty Land.
It was difficult to finish the trip. When she was halfway up the ladder to Atule’er, for example, Chen felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of heights. Some people advised her to give up on the climb. But the woman set her teeth and continued her climb. This metal ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, it wasn’t convenient to climb the mountain and villagers used a ladder made of plants. The government also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through the program No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor places of China has been improved.
China has changed a lot, but some people just find it hard to believe. Now, Chen has shown us what we can do about that: Don’t just tell people about the great changes, show them whenever you can.

There is a story in the book History as a Mirror (《资治通鉴》) by Chinese historian Sima Guang.
Zhi Xuanzi was head of a big clan (家族) in the State of Jin (770-476 BC). He wanted a clan member, Zhi Yao, to be his successor (继承人). However, another man in the clan, Zhi Guo, was against the idea. Zhi Guo listed some strong points of Zhi Yao. For example, he was good at riding and shooting. He was decisive and talkative. But Zhi Guo said that he had a big problem with his morals. He thought he had an unkind heart.
Still, Zhi Xuanzi didn’t listen to the idea. Zhi Yao became head of the clan. With his leadership abilities, he quickly made his clan the strongest in the State of Jin. However, because of his aggressive style, three other clans worked together to fight against the Zhi clan. Finally, the Zhi clan was beaten.
Sima Guang used this story to stress the importance of morals. Having only talent is not enough for a great person. He said that excellent people must have both talent and virtue.
Those who have virtue but no talent might work inefficiently. Those who have talent but no virtue might not use their talent properly. Those who have both talent and virtue were called xiancai in ancient times. If you ask which one is more important between the two, it must be virtue. Only if a person has virtue can he or she get on the right track.
In 2018, when President Xi Jinping talked with students and teachers at Peking University, he mentioned Sima Guang’s ideas. He said good education should develop both a person’s virtues and talents. Educators must follow this idea. As students, we can also make it our goal.
21.Who wrote the book History as a Mirror?
22.In Zhi Guo’s opinion, what were Zhi Yao’s strong points?
23.Why was Zhi Guo against Zhi Yao becoming the new leader?
24.What happened to the Zhi clan under Zhi Yao’s leadership at last?

The famous artist Wen Tong was considered as a master during the Song Dynasty. He was born in 1018 and died in 1079. He was famous for his paintings of bamboo. No one else in all of China could draw bamboo like Wen Tong could.
Why was he so good at drawing bamboo? Well, he loved bamboo! He planted only bamboo in his garden. He didn’t just grow bamboo. He also studied bamboo to see how it moved and how it grew in different weather.
One day in spring, a storm moved into the village. Everyone rushed home to get inside. But Wen Tong rushed outside to his bamboo garden. He wanted to see what water on bamboo leaves looked like.
One hot day in summer, most people were inside their homes, trying to stay cool. But Wen Tong was outside in his bamboo garden. He wanted to see the bamboo clearly in the strong sunlight.
One day in fall, it was so windy that some people fell over when they stepped outside. But Wen Tong went outside to his bamboo garden. He wanted to see the bamboo leaves swaying in the wind.
One day in winter, it started to snow. All the other villagers were inside their homes, staying warm. But of course, Wen Tong was outside in his bamboo garden. He wanted to see the snow on the bamboo.
After many days just like these, he knew what bamboo looked like in all seasons, in all weather, and at all ages.

Konthee, from Thailand, is specially interested in different kinds of flowers and taking pictures of the attractive ones. He lives and works in Kunming now. In Dounan Market, Kunming, the largest fresh-cut flower market in Asia, he has seen many flowers he never saw before and knows more about the relationship between flowers and Chinese culture.
There, Konthee saw phalaenopsis (蝴蝶兰) for the first time. The flower seller told him that the flower means wealth and longevity (长寿) in China. This reminded him of the knowledge of Chinese culture he had learned before. “When I was learning Chinese, I learned that in ancient China, plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums (梅兰竹菊) stood for a gentleman’s character,” Konthee said.
Konthee was also amazed by begonias (秋海棠). They represent deep love. He remembered reading about the begonia in A Dream of Red Mansions, where it stands for the sad love between Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu.
Besides the unique cultural background that gives flowers their imagery, the rich history of China also influenced the naming of many flowers. Peonies (牡丹), for example, have also been known as “the Luoyang flower” because Luoyang has had the most kinds of peonies since the Tang dynasties.
Konthee’s photography catches these natural wonders. His journey has taught him more about the flowers in Chinese culture.
39.Where did Konthee see many unfamiliar flowers in Kunming?
40.What did plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums stand for in ancient China?
41.How did Konthee feel when he knew about begonias?

Yang Ling, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Yang’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory. For example, she avoided sweating (流汗) too much during exercise in winter and would slow down because of the cold winter, according to TCM. To her, learning these skills and theories was not becoming a TCM doctor but about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
“Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM because of its effectiveness (有效性),” according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different therapies. “This is actually an advantage of TCM instead of a shortcoming, as it can be a more effective treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are welcoming TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Yang noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn the value of Chinese culture.”
44.Who is Yang Ling in this passage?
45.How long did the course Acupuncture and tuina 2023 last?
46.What has Yang learned about exercise in winter after the training?
47.Why does TCM treat the same illnesses with different therapies?
48.Would you like to learn about TCM? Why?

Jo was the first to wake up on Christmas morning. When her sisters were awake too, they all went down to the kitchen. Their mother wasn’t there but Hannah, their servant, was.
“Your mother went out early.” she said. “A poor boy came to the door asking for food. She sympathized him and she wanted to help him. She went to see his family.”
While they were waiting for their mother to come back, the girls put their presents for her in the basket. Soon they heard the sound of a key in the front door.
“Mother’s here!” cried Jo. “Hide the basket behind the sofa! Quick!”
Then they all rushed into the hall to greet their mother.
“Merry Christmas, Mother!” they cried. “Merry Christmas, little daughters!” Mrs March said in her happy voice. She hugged them all and kissed them. Then she suddenly became very serious.
“Come and sit down, girls. I want to say something before we start breakfast.”
They all sat down at the breakfast table and Mrs March continued.
“I went to see a poor woman this morning. Her name is Mrs Hunel. She lives near here in one room with her seven children. One of them is only a baby. They are cold and hungry because they don’t have a fire or any food. The oldest boy came to ask me for help. Girls, can we give them our breakfast as a Christmas present?”
The sisters looked at the good food on the table. They were all hungry. For a minute nobody spoke. Then Jo said, “I’m so glad you came back before we started eating, Mother!” Meg put the bread on a big plate without saying anything
“Can I help carry the things to the poor children?” asked Beth.
“I want to take the muffins,” said Amy. They were her favourite things.

(2024·江苏盐城·二模)Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak Putonghua, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to store local cultures. Language faithfully shows the history, the beliefs and the biases of an area, he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worries of the disappearing of dialects. “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear.” he said.
So how did China make this big library? A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen, said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers. The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

That evening, the steamboat stopped at Louisville, where Lucy’s husband worked. When they shouted the name of the place, she put her coat between her bags on the sleeping child. Then she ran to the side of the steamboat, hoping to see her husband.
Suddenly, Haley took the baby and gave it to the buyer. “Don’t wake him up.” The man took the child and got off the steamboat.
When they left Louisville, Lucy returned to her seat.
“Lucy,” said the trader, “you know you couldn’t take your child down south. I sold him to a very good family that will take care of him better than you can.”
Lucy sat down. She looked calm.
Tom saw everything, and he was crying. He went to sit with Lucy, and tried to comfort her, but she didn’t want to listen.
Night came and everybody went to sleep. But something woke Tom up at midnight. He saw something black move quickly to the side of the boat, and he heard a splash (落水声) in the water. He got up and saw that Lucy wasn’t there.
The next morning Haley wrote her name in his accounts book under losses.
Haley started to trust Tom. At night Tom had to sleep in chains, but during the day he was free to walk around the boat. He often helped the workmen on the boat, and everybody liked him.
A rich man, St Clare was travelling with his daughter, Eva, who was about five years old. She was a beautiful child, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was always busy or running around, and Tom noticed her and thought that she looked like an angel.
She often went where the slaves sat in chains and looked at them with sad eyes. Sometimes she brought them food. She liked Tom and hoped her father could buy Tom.
Later that day, Eva moved too quickly on the side of the boat and fell into the water.

Tom saw everything and he jumped into the water immediately. He caught her and swam back to the boat. Eva was saved.
The next day, St Clare bought Tom at high price.
