Alabama, to cut the lawn for an elderly soldier in North Carolina who couldn’t find anyone to help him with his yard work. That wasn’t the first time the twenty-nine-year-old Bermuda native had gained such attention. To do his good deeds, Rodney often finds leads for those in need through social media. Back to one August afternoon in 2015, Rodney Smith Jr. was driving home. That’s when Rodney saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn. He would take a couple of shaky steps, using the handle to stabilize himself, pause, then slowly push the mower again. Rodney decided to help. Mr. Brown thanked him greatly, and Rodney went home feeling satisfied. Sitting at his computer to do his homework, Rodney couldn’t get Mr. Brown out of his mind. There must be many Mr. Browns out there. He went online and posted that he would mow lawns for free for senior citizens. Messages flooded in. One day a cancer-battling woman said she wasn’t having a good day. Rodney decided to do more than mowing lawns. After he finished mowing, he knocked on her door. “You're going to win this fight, Madam”, he said. Then he asked folks to pray for her on social media. Word of Rodney’s mission spread. A grandmother in Ohio said he’d encouraged her 12-year-old grandson to mow lawns. He got a letter from a seven-year-old boy in Kansas. “Mr. Rodney, I would like to be a part of your program, and I’ll make you proud,” he wrote. That gave Rodney an idea. In 2017, he decided to establish a programme Raising Men Lawn Care Service to make a national movement for young people. The kids learn the joy of giving back. Yard work seems like a small, simple thing, but taking care of the lawn means a lot to the people they do it for. “When we mow their yards for free, they can use the money for healthcare and food etc. It means more than you would think,” Rodney said. 4. Rodney drew attention for his _____. A. mowing skills B. ambition C. driving distance D. generosity 5. Why did Rodney knock on a lady’s door? A. To comfort her. B. To pray for her. C. To share gardening tips. D. To ask about her health. 6. Where do Rodney’s decisions of mowing lawns for free come from? A. National media. B. Personal success. C. Daily inspiration. D. People’s courage. 7. What is the best title of the passage? A. Giving Free, Gaining Fortune B. Mowing a Lawn, Making a Life C. Serving the Senior, Satisfying the Self D. Changing a little, Challenging the Limits 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Earlier this year Rodney Smith Jr. made headlines when he drove eight hours from his home in Huntsville. Alabama, to cut the lawn for an elderly soldier in North Carolina who couldn’t find anyone to help him with his yard work.”(今年早些时候,Rodney Smith Jr.登上了新闻头条,他从阿拉巴马州亨茨维尔的家中驱车8小时,为北卡罗来纳州一位找不到人帮他清理院子的老年士兵修剪草坪。)及第二段“That wasn’t the first time the twenty-nine-year-old Bermuda native had gained such attention. To do his good deeds, Rodney often finds leads for those in need through social media.”(这并不是这位29岁的百慕大本地人第一次受到如此关注。 根据第五段“One day a cancer-battling woman said she wasn’t having a good day. Rodney decided to do more than mowing lawns. After he finished mowing, he knocked on her door. “You're going to win this fight, Madam”, he said. Then he asked folks to pray for her on social media.”(一天,一位身患癌症的妇女说她今天过得不太好。 故选A项。 根据第三段“Back to one August afternoon in 2015, Rodney Smith Jr. was driving home. That’s when Rodney saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn. He would take a couple of shaky steps, using the handle to stabilize himself, pause, then slowly push the mower again. Rodney decided to help. Mr. Brown thanked him greatly, and Rodney went home feeling satisfied.”(时间回到2015年8月的一个下午,Rodney Smith Jr.开车回家。 及第四段“Sitting at his computer to do his homework, Rodney couldn’t get Mr. Brown out of his mind. There must be many Mr. Browns out there. He went online and posted that he would mow lawns for free for senior citizens.”(Rodney坐在电脑前做作业,脑子里一直想着布朗先生。 根据最后一段“Yard work seems like a small, simple thing, but taking care of the lawn means a lot to the people they do it for. “When we mow their yards for free, they can use the money for healthcare and food etc. It means more than you would think, ” Rodney said.”(院子里的工作似乎是一件小事,但照顾好草坪对他们做这件事的人来说意义重大。“当我们免费为他们的院子割草时,他们可以把钱用于医疗保健和食品等。它的意义比你想象的要大,”Rodney说。)并结合文章提到的Rodney免费为有需求的人修剪草坪的故事可知,本文主要介绍了Rodney免费为有需求的人修剪草坪,对他们的生活产生了积极影响。故B项“Mowing a Lawn, Making a Life”(修剪草坪,创造生活)可概括文章内容。故选B项。 C Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees. In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities. They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity! Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.” 8. Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research? A. To grow more trees. B. To protect plant diversity. C. To reduce tree losses. D. To predict forest disappearance. 9. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research? A. Its theoretical basis. B. Its key procedures. C. Its scientific evidence. D. Its usual difficulties. 10. What does the finding suggest about the plant materials? A. The hormone levels affect their rigidity. B. They are better than naturally grown plants. C. Their cells’shapes mainly rely on their density. D. Their growth speed determines their characteristics. 11. Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain? A. It uses new biological materials in lab experiments. B. It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth. C. It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry. D. It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段“Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. (每年,全世界因砍伐树木而损失约1000万公顷森林,面积相当于冰岛的大小。按照这个速度,一些科学家预测世界森林可能在100到200年内消失。为了解决这个问题,麻省理工学院(MIT)的研究人员开创了一种在实验室中生成类似木材的植物材料的技术。这使得在不砍伐树木的情况下“种植”木制品成为可能。)”可知,麻省理工学院的研究人员进行这项研究是为了减少树木损失。故选C。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities. 根据第三段“They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. (他们发现,较低的激素水平会使植物材料的细胞更圆、更开放、密度更低,而较高的激素水平有助于细胞结构更小但密度更大的植物材料的生长。更低或更高密度的细胞结构使植物材料更柔软或更坚硬,有助于材料生长出不同的类木特征。)”可知,这一发现表明激素水平会影响它们的刚性。故选A。 根据最后一段“Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.” D。 D A new study on 26 chimpanzees (黑猩猩) from zoos around the world found that chimpanzees can recognise family members and long lost friends even after decades of separation. The participating chimpanzees were given juice while staring at a screen flashing side by side photos of other chimps. One animal from each pair of photos had lived with the group for at least a year, while the other was a stranger. An eye-tracking camera recorded where the participants were looking and for how long. Data showed their eyes rested longer on familiar groupmates, suggesting “rich recognition of each other.” There is also evidence that they became more intent when shown a picture of a chimpanzee with whom they’d had more positive interactions, compared with conflicting relationships. In the most impressive case, a 46-year-old chimpanzee named Louise repeatedly demonstrated “intense” attention upon seeing photographs of her sister Loretta and nephew Erin, whom she hadn’t seen in more than 26 years. The team said Louise’s results represent the longest-lasting social memory documented in any non-human animal to date. “We tend to see ourselves as unique special creatures with incredible intellectual (智力的) capacities that are very different from other animals on earth,” said Laura Simone Lewis, a postdoctoral fellow in Berkeley’s psychology department and lead author of the study. “This study is showing us how similar we are to chimpanzees.” She noted that the findings support the theory that long-term social memory in humans and modern day chimps has come from “our last common ancestor that lived somewhere between 5 to 7 million years ago” who also likely had long-term social memory. Now that they have definitive evidence that these endangered species possess long-term social memories, researchers have more questions, including whether chimpanzees miss the individuals they’re no longer with, especially their friends and family. “Our study doesn’t determine they are doing this, but it raises questions about the possibility that they may have the ability to do so,” Lewis said. 12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The nature of chimps. B. The method of the study. C. The analysis of the recorded data. D. The layout of experimental equipment. 13. What does the underlined word “intent” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Attentive. B. Doubtful. C. Hesitant. D. Emotional. 14. Why is the example of Louise in paragraph 4 mentioned? A. To stress chimps are as intelligent as human beings. B. To explain where chimps’ social memory comes from. C. To better demonstrate the chimps’ memory length. D. To further prove the existence of chimps’ social memory. 15. What will the research team most probably continue to explore? A. Whether chimps feel strong emotions to their long lost friends. B. How to strengthen chimps’ long-term social memories. C. How chimps recognised their close contacts after long separation. D. Why chimps possess the amazing social memories. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段“The participating chimpanzees were given juice while staring at a screen flashing side by side photos of other chimps. One animal from each pair of photos had lived with the group for at least a year, while the other was a stranger. An eye-tracking camera recorded where the participants were looking and for how long. Data showed their eyes rested longer on familiar groupmates, suggesting “rich recognition of each other.(参与实验的黑猩猩一边喝果汁,一边盯着屏幕,屏幕上并排闪现着其他黑猩猩的照片。每对照片中的一只动物与这群动物一起生活了至少一年,而另一只则是陌生人。眼球追踪摄像机记录了参与者看的地方和看了多久。数据显示,它们的目光停留在熟悉的同伴身上的时间更长,这表明“彼此之间有丰富的认同感”)”可知,本段主要介绍了实验的具体方法。故选B项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中“In the most impressive case, a 46-year-old chimpanzee named Louise repeatedly demonstrated “intense” attention upon seeing photographs of her sister Loretta and nephew Erin, whom she hadn’t seen in more than 26 years.(在最令人印象深刻的案例中,一只名叫路易丝的46岁黑猩猩在看到她的妹妹洛丽塔和侄子艾琳的照片时反复表现出“强烈”的关注,她已经26年没有见过他们了)”以及划线词所在句“they became more intent when shown a picture of a chimpanzee with whom they’d had more positive interactions, compared with conflicting relationships(当它们看到与他们有过更多积极互动的黑猩猩的照片时,与冲突关系相比,他们变得更加intent)”可知,当46岁黑猩猩在看到她的妹妹洛丽塔和侄子艾琳的照片时反复表现出“强烈”的关注,这里妹妹洛丽塔和侄子艾琳与46岁黑猩猩为亲属,不存在冲突关系,所以46岁黑猩猩看到亲人时是专注的,可推测划线词的含义为“专注的”,与attentive意义相近。故选A项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“The team said Louise’s results represent the longest-lasting social memory documented in any non-human animal to date.(研究小组表示,路易斯的结果代表了迄今为止在任何非人类动物中记录的持续时间最长的社会记忆)”可知,路易斯的结果代表了迄今为止在任何非人类动物中记录的持续时间最长的社会记忆。因而,此处提到路易斯的例子是为了进一步证明黑猩猩的社会记忆是存在的。故选D项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“researchers have more questions, including whether chimpanzees miss the individuals they’re no longer with, especially their friends and family. “Our study doesn’t determine they are doing this, but it raises questions about the possibility that they may have the ability to do so,” Lewis said.(研究人员还有更多的问题,包括黑猩猩是否会想念它们不再在一起的个体,尤其是它们的朋友和家人。刘易斯说:“我们的研究并没有确定它们是否在这样做,但它提出了一个问题,即它们是否有能力这样做。”)”可知,研究小组最后可能继续探索黑猩猩是否对失散多年的朋友有强烈的感情。故选A项。 第二节(共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) Despite what most people might think, you really don’t need much time to work out. In fact, even ten to twenty minutes of challenging exercise a few times a week is enough to burn fat, build muscle, boost strength, and contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle. ____16____ But sometimes, the resistance isn’t really about the actual time the workout takes. It’s about the energy it takes to get ready for it. Maybe your stress levels are over the top, or your energy levels have been so low that you keep talking yourself out of a workout. Or maybe you just don’t want to get all sweaty and have to take a shower afterward. ____17____ In such fast-paced life, we’re all struggling. But when it comes to exercise, being healthy and fit isn’t as black and white as the fitness world tries to make it seem. ____18____ Doing something is always better than nothing when it comes to movement. Micro workouts, like getting out for a fifteen-minute walk instead of doing the strength training workout, are significantly better than doing nothing at all. ____19____ They are time-saving, since they can be done in seconds or in as little time as 15-20 minutes. They require minimum space and equipment. Many can be done at home, in the park, or even while waiting in the checkout line. They are also money-saving as these can be done without a gym membership, coach, trainer, or class instructor. So in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, make time to move. ____20____ If all the movements like push-ups and pull-ups add up, you will still get many of the same benefits of a longer, harder workout. A. These are understandable excuses. B. Fitness can be simple, easy and convenient. C. The advantages of micro workouts are apparent. D. Try to add in micro workouts throughout the day. E. No matter how busy you are, you have time to exercise. F. Micro workouts are being backed up by trainers and science. G. Being healthy is really more important than you can imagine. 【答案】16. E 17. A 18. B 19. C 20. They require minimum space and equipment. Many can be done at home, in the park, or even while waiting in the checkout line. They are also money-saving as these can be done without a gym membership, coach, trainer, or class instructor.(它们很节省时间,因为它们可以在几秒钟内完成,也可以在15-20分钟内完成。它们只需要最小的空间和设备。很多都可以在家里、公园里、甚至在排队结账的时候完成。它们也很省钱,因为这些可以在没有健身房会员、教练、训练师或班主任的情况下完成)”详细介绍了微锻炼的优点,是对C项“The advantages of micro workouts are apparent.(微锻炼的好处是显而易见的)”内容的说明。C项为段首主题句。故选C项。 【20题详解】 上文“So in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, make time to move.(因此,为了保持健康的生活方式,请腾出时间来运动)”提出腾出时间运动的建议,D项“Try to add in micro workouts throughout the day.(试着在一天中增加一些微锻炼)”承接上文,进一步提出逐渐增加锻炼内容的要求,下文“If all the movements like push-ups and pull-ups add up, you will still get many of the same benefits of a longer, harder workout.(如果把俯卧撑和引体向上等所有运动加起来,你仍然会得到许多与长时间、高强度锻炼相同的好处)”说明这样做的结果,上下文语意连贯。故选D项。 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分 30 分) Granny fell ill before Valentine’s Day. My parents and I had spent forever researching summer camps online. Finally, we picked out one where I could design games, animate (制作动画) characters, and learn other cool coding (编程) stuff. My mom said, “I like the idea of you exercising that clever brain of yours. But I also want you to get plenty of fresh air.” “Campers can choose to hike or swim every afternoon!” I said, as I clicked on the registration form. My dad filled out the form, and weeks later, my parents dropped me off for what I thought would be a week of nonstop computer-coding fun. I arrived at the check-in table at the same time as a camper of my age named Halley, who was wearing an adorable sunhat. Halley greeted, “We are in the same group - number 7.” Led by an advisor, we followed the green arrows to the campsite. I surprisedly found that it was so cool and woodsy along the path. I exchanged ideas with Halley about what might come out of the camp. Halley excitedly mentioned the little animals he loved to observe and something about night sky watching. “You gave me the best idea,” I said. “I’ll base my characters on the animals you mentioned!” Halley laughed. “I might be missing something here. Who are these mysterious characters?” “You know, the characters we’ll be designing and animating on computers this week!” I said. “Uh, sorry. Still lost,” said Halley. “Why would we be doing computer stuff at Nature Camp?” It was then that I realised some errors must have been made. I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong online form! We immediately raced back to the welcome table to see if I could switch over to Tech Camp, but of course it was completely full. I forced a smile as we headed for our campsite. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “OK, I’ll have a try,” I looked at Halley thankfully. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: I forced a smile as we headed for our campsite. As I stepped forward, I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down. Seeing that, Halley sat next to me. For the next few minutes, regret immersed me as my treasured Tech Camp slipped away due to my inattention. Then Halley broke the silence, whispering kindly, “I guess it was the call of the wild.” I responded with a bitter smile. I was presented the stuff I could enjoy from nature, suggesting we hike and experience it. “You can discover unexpected excitement.” he encouraged me. “OK,I’ll have a try,” I looked at Halley thankfully. We reached the campsite and started to explore the nature. Nature Camp turned out amazing! We turned over stones to be amazed by the creatures beneath and hiked through woods to be greeted by the mountains behind. My favorite time came when we slept out under the stars, talking about ancient Greek stories. Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Halley was right. Try not to stay stuck in the negative for a whole bunch of amazingness really is just waiting to jump out and surprise you! 词汇激活 行为类 走上前:step forward/go forwrd/come up 出现:immerse/appear/arise 珍惜:treasure/cherish/value 鼓励:encourage/hearten/embolden/pull for 情绪类 失望的,沮丧的:disappointed/chagrined/let sb. down/despondent 惊讶的:amazed/shocked/surprised 【点睛】【高分句型1】Seeing that, Halley sat next to me.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Halley was right. 1. B Earlier this year Rodney Smith Jr. made headlines when he drove eight hours from his home in Huntsville. Changing a little, Challenging the Limits C Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. B Its key procedures. D A new study on 26 chimpanzees (黑猩猩) from zoos around the world found that chimpanzees can recognise family members and long lost friends even after decades of separation. 第二节(共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) Despite what most people might think, you really don’t need much time to work out. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分 30 分) Granny fell ill before Valentine’s Day. I surprisedly found that it was so cool and woodsy along the path I exchanged ideas with Halley about what might come out of the camp. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1-5CACBC 6-10ACBBA 11-15BACBA 16-20CBACA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
