Jim and Jack came from a small town. They were ceramic(陶瓷)
artists and good at making pots(罐子).
They heard city people liked pots, so they decided to sell their
pots to a big city. Through more than ten years of hard work, they
made the best pots in the town. They hired a ship to take all the pots to the city.
Unluckily, the ship met a strong storm on the way. After the storm, the ship landed. All the
pots were broken into pieces. The two men’s dream of becoming rich was broken along with the
pots.
Jim suggested that they should stay in a hotel for the night and walk around the city to enjoy
the sights the next day. Jack looked at Jim in pain and asked, “You still want to go around the city?
Don’t you show any care to these pots? We worked so hard to make them!” “We are unlucky
enough to lose the pots. We will be more unlucky if we lose happiness,” Jim said calmly.
Jack thought for a while and nodded. The next day, he followed Jim around the city and had
a good time for a few days. During their stay in the city, they found by accident that people there
decorated their walls with things that looked like what they used to make pots. So Jim and Jack
used the broken pots to make mosaic tiles(马赛克瓷砖) and sold them to the city people. In this
way, they made much money and returned home happily.

Last weekend, I wanted to buy a jacket in the flea market(跳蚤市场)
where people sell things at low prices and some people like to bargain(讲
价) with the sellers. At first, the seller asked $100 for it, but I bargained with him until he agreed
to take only $50. I thought I got a good deal, but my friend got an even better deal. She used
Freecycle and got a jacket for free, no cost! And the jacket was worth a lot of money!
Freecycle is an online group. People give away things they don’t need any more for free!
Other people get things they need, also for free, so they don’t have to pay an arm and a leg. It’s all
about reusing and keeping good things out of landfills(垃圾填埋). If you want to join it, you don’t
need to pay anything. The membership is free. When you join Freecycle, you choose a group that
is near you. There are groups all over the world, in over 100 countries, so there is probably a
group near your home.
At Freecycle, people list all kinds of things: furniture, clothes, artwork, electronics, and more.
You may need something that you can’t afford to buy. But on Freecycle, it’s free.
In the past, when talking about saving money, I always thought about a flea market or
second-hand stores, where you can get a good price on used things and save lots of money. But
now, I suggest an even better way to save money-Freecycle.
No matter at Freecycle, second-hand stores or at a flea market, you may have to spend some
extra time looking for what you want, but it can be a lot of fun. You can also save a lot of money.
It’s really worth it!
36. How did the author’s friend get a jacket?
A. She bought it at a flea market. B. She received it as a gift.
C. She got it for free on Freecycle. D. She won it in a contest.
37. What does the underlined phrase “pay an arm and a leg” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Protect the environment. B. Spend any money
C. Hurt yourself badly. D. Surf the Internet.
38. What do you know about Freecycle according to the passage?
A. Freecycle is a famous international shopping mall.
B. You can get what you want at Freecycle at low prices.
C. You can find anything at Freecycle except used iPads.
D. Freecycle is an online group to help cut down waste.
39. What’s the writer’s attitude towards Freecycle?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain. D. Worried.
40. Which of following can be the best title for the text?
A. Freecycle, a green way to earn money.
B. Freecycle, a special place to have fun.
C. Freecycle, a popular market to bargain.
D. Freecycle, a useful app to save the earth.

A Bright Idea
Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework
by the light of a kerosene lamp(煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made
studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school
for this reason...so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He
continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for
schoolchildren but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light
can hurt people’s eyes. Besides, it can lead to fires. Lastly, kerosene is expensive, so families have
less money for food. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and
good for the environment. Yet Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar(太阳能的) light. Sunlight is free and
solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began
to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organization heard about this and

provided money for him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers, who only
earned $34 a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled
materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money
to his team, so the lamps were usually free.
Thousands of people had safe light. Julia, a mother of three, said, “Thanks to Evans, my
children have light to read, and I have my own light to cook.” The solar lamps made a big
difference.

b. Thousands of people had safe light.
c. His first solar lamp was invented.

Years ago, green was simply a color. Now it’s much more! In the 1970s, some people began to
worry about what we did to mother Earth. (46) _________________. It is a big idea that touches
governments all over the world, and a small idea that touches us all in our homes.
Architects(建筑师) and building engineers are thinking about how to make buildings greener.
These days, green architecture is becoming more and more popular. (47) _________________.
We need to be very careful about the materials (材料)we use. It is better to choose renewable
materials-those that the Earth replaces quickly. (48)__________________. Also, for those
materials that are not renewable, we need to use them as little as possible. Our mother Earth has
offered us many other possibilities, such as wind and solar power. Planners must think about the
needs of those who will spend time in green buildings. Usually, green energy is more comfortable
for people. (49) _________________. Natural lighting is often kinder to the eyes than electric
lighting. In fact, many people who live or work in green buildings report feeling happier and
healthier.
(50) __________________. For example, they might try to use as little land as possible. If a
building covers a large area, there will be less space for plants and trees. They also have to think
about cutting down waste and pollution while the building work is going on.
Although green buildings are more expensive to build, they are less expensive to run.
A. Or we can reuse some materials.
B. As a result, green thinking was born.
C. To understand it, we have to look at three different areas.
D. For example, natural wind brings people cleaner and fresher air.
E. Architects must think about what the building will do to the environment.
F. Protecting ourselves is very important.

五、阅读表达 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,计 10 分)

Years ago, I interviewed a successful advertising man. He told me that he dreamed of being a
writer. In fact, I never believed he could make it. About ten years later, however, I was surprised
to see the man on TV, holding up his new book. He has published more than 100 best sellers.
His ability to see himself as a writer shows a concept(理念) known as “possible selves”. It
describes how people picture their future life: what they may become, or want to become, or even
fear to become.
A possible self can take you beyond daydreams. What you imagine can come true if you build
a bridge from your “now self” to your “possible self”. But how do we build that bridge? Here are
a few steps you can try.
First of all, just take action. If you’re dreaming of a certain job, attend a course, follow
someone who does what you want to do and start by taking up that type of work as a hobby or a
side job. You should tell yourself that these are the steps you can take to achieve that goal(目标).
A study of adults aged between 23 and 72 found that more than 70 percent of those who sent
weekly progress to a friend completed their goals, twice the percentage of those who didn’t share
written goals. So secondly, when you have a goal, share it. More friends knowing about your goal
makes it more likely to be achieved. That finding held true for all goals.
In the end, it’s a good idea to ask for advice from people you’re not super close to or haven’t
talked to for a long time. Studies show that friends you’re not super tight with can sometimes give
you really good advice. So, don’t be afraid to talk to people you know a little bit for help when
you need it.
