To bring that one step closer to reality, Zhiyong Fan, a materials scientist of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, developed a new artificial eye recently. The device, which is about as sensitive to light and has sharper vision and a faster reaction time than a real eyeball, may outperform human eyes. 1. Why does Zhiyong Fan develop the artificial eye? A.To replace people’s real eyeballs. B.To gain a sharper vision. C.To help the blind regain their eyesight. D.To help normal eyes perform better. Passage B Soap (肥皂) might seem like a reasonable way to avoid mosquito bites (蚊子叮) on the basis that if mosquitoes can’t smell you, they can’t bite you. However, a recent study has found that rather than protecting you, certain soaps might actually make you more attractive to mosquitoes. 2. What has the study found? A.Soap attracts many mosquitoes. B.Male mosquitoes feed on blood. C.Some plants drive away mosquitoes. D.Not all soap can stop mosquito bites. Passage C Developed by a team of WSU researchers, the robots’ tininess largely relies on a material known as a shape memory alloy (合金). Although shape memory alloys change form when heated, they can “remember” their original shapes and return to them after cooling. Because of this, the two micro-robots do not require standard motors, and they use light and small ones instead of bulky moving parts. 3. What does the underlined word “bulky” mean in paragraph 2? A.Cheap. B.Huge. C.Cool D.Fast. Passage D Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)? Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team. “Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment. “In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by. 4.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.Possible application fields of the robot. B.Different types of the robot. C.Several important features of the robot. D.Working process of the robot. 5.Which of the following can best describe mCLARI? A.Valuable but uncontrollable. B.Modern but high-cost. C.Heavy and time-consuming. D.Advanced and effective. 6.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B.mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C.CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D.A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries Section D—高考真题链接 Passage A Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills. Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said. The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age. “The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转)and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement. The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls. The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science. 1. In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play? A. Building confidence. B. Developing spatial skills. C. Learning self-control. D. Gaining high-tech knowledge. 2. What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment? A. Parents’ age. B. Children’s imagination. C. Parents’ education. D. Child-parent relationship. 3. How do boy differ from girls in puzzle play? A. They play with puzzles more often. B. They tend to talk less during the game. C. They prefer to use more spatial language. D. They are likely to play with tougher puzzles. 4. What is the text mainly about? A. A mathematical method. B. A scientific study. C. A woman psychologist D. A teaching program. Passage B When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn’t sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short. Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked. It’s a plant’s way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Apparently. Because we can watch the neighbors react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers. Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors. The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking, stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do. Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth. Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的)than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There’s a whole lot going on. 1. What does a plant do when it is under attack? A. It makes noises. B. It gets help from other plants. C. It stands quietly. D. It sends out certain chemicals. 2. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraph 3? A. The attackers get attacked. B. The insects gather under the table. C. The plants get ready to fight back. D. The perfumes attract natural enemies. 3. Scientists find from their studies that plants can. A. predict natural disasters B. protect themselves against insects C. talk to one another intentionally D. help their neighbors when necessary 4. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The world is changing faster than ever. B. People have stronger senses than before. C. The world is more complex than it seems. D. People in Darwin’s time were more imaginative. Section B—课后阅读训练 Passage A I waved goodbye to my senior high school life just six months ago and now I am a college freshman. However, my memory of high school life is so fresh that I feel as if it were only yesterday. My senior high school is called Yantai No. 1 Middle School with a long history, which can date back to 1931. When I recall my memorable high school life, I feel blissful and impressed. To be honest, my senior high school life was very tiring but I really enjoyed it. I was asked to put study in the first place all the time by both my parents and my teachers. At that time, I got up at 5:30 a.m. and went to bed late in order to have more study time to review what I had learned in the day. In addition to study, I also took part in some activities like English speech contests, calligraphy competitions and so on. Our class was like a big family. I got along well with my classmates. We always discussed issues of all kinds after class. I made many friends in the family and we still keep in touch with each other after we graduated. Luckily, my teachers were also very enthusiastic and friendly. We were seen as their children. They not only taught us knowledge but told us how to do better. What’s more, dormitory life is also worth mentioning. Living far away from my home, I became quite independent by the end of the first semester at senior high. My roommates and I worked as a team to do some cleaning every day. We had a good time living as a family together, and my social skills were gradually improved. This is my high school life, busy but fulfilling. I will never forget it. 1. It seems that the author’s high school life is anything but ______. A. memorable B. impressive C. tiring D. bitter 2. What can we infer from the third paragraph? A. The author was unhappy about what she was told to do by her parents and teachers. B. The author was a hardworking student when at high school. C. She learned how to get along with others. 4. Where is this passage most likely to be found? A. In a newspaper covering breaking news. B. In a fashion magazine. C. On a college composition website. D. In a guidebook. Passage B Happiness is important for everyone. Most people want to be happy but few know how to find happiness. Money and success don’t bring long-lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness. Some people believe that if they are wealthy, with the money they will be able to do anything they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not only money, but also many other things which can’t be bought by money. However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness, nor is holding a high position in the government. These people value (重视) their beliefs, or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy. Here are a few ways to help you be happier. The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job that we don’t enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have close friends usually enjoy happier and healthier lives. The second secret of happiness is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful things for other people. If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to get food for an old neighbor, or simply help around the house. Now maybe you know how to find happiness! 1. Some people who hold a high position in the government think they can ________. A. do what they want to do at any time B. enjoy health which makes them work hard C. take an active part in all kinds of activities every day D. get money and something they can’t buy with money 2. The writer thinks the secret of happiness is that people ________. A. think about getting money B. think about getting a good job C. often spend time with close friends D. often spend time thinking about the future 3. Many people find it happy to ________. A. do some meaningful things for others B. make much money and little success C. remember the old days and troubles D. go shopping to buy some food 4. The passage mainly tells us ________. A. how to have a bright future B. how to find happiness C. to do something good for others D. to value our beliefs or health 页 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ Lesson 3 教材衔接+研究类说明文—研究目的过程与结论 Step 1:知识积累之听力填词训练 Last year, I had the chance to study at a British secondary school as an exchange student. 参考答案: 细节理解题。根据第一段“However, a recent study has found that rather than protecting you, certain soaps might actually make you more attractive to mosquitoes.(然而,最近的一项研究发现,某些肥皂不仅不能保护你,反而可能会让你更吸引蚊子)”可知,不是所有的肥皂都可以阻止蚊子的攻击。故选D。 Passage C Developed by a team of WSU researchers, the robots’ tininess largely relies on a material known as a shape memory alloy (合金). 参考答案: 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“the two micro-robots do not require standard motors, and they use light and small ones instead of”可知,这两个微型机器人不需要标准的马达,它们使用轻而小的马达代替巨大沉重的运动部件。故划线词意思是“巨大的”。故选B。 Passage D Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)? A.Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B.mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C.CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D.A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries 参考答案: 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家们设计的一款新的机器人,这款机器人可以在外科手术中大显身手。 1.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段““Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster(灾害)response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment. (主要作者Kaushik Jayaram表示:“由于机器人体积小,且能够改变形状,我们预计这项技术将在四个重要领域得到应用。”这些领域包括灾难响应、检查高价值物品、环境监测和医疗治疗。)”可知,第三段主要讨论了这种机器人可能的应用领域,包括灾难响应、检查高价值物品、环境监测和医疗治疗。故选A。 2.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. (科学家们设计了一种名为“mCLARI”小型昆虫机器人,它可以控制甚至改变自己的体型,在不同的环境中穿行,以适应缝隙。)”以及文章第三段““Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment. (主要作者Kaushik Jayaram表示:“由于机器人体积小,且能够改变形状,我们预计这项技术将在四个重要领域得到应用。”这些领域包括灾难响应、检查高价值物品、环境监测和医疗治疗。)”可知,这款机器人是由科学家设计的,能够控制和改变形状以适应不同环境,预计在医疗等领域有广泛应用,这表明它是先进且有效的技术。故选D。 3.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)? 参考答案: 本文是说明文。是关于孩子们玩智力游戏的研究,介绍了研究考虑的因素,研究过程和结果。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中…found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 develop better spatial skill(在2岁到4岁之间玩智力游戏的儿童在空间能力方面更好)可知,孩子们可以从智力游戏中发展更好的空间技能。B. A scientific study(一项科学研究)符合以上说法,故选B项。 Passage B When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn’t sit quietly. 参考答案: 科学家研究发现当植物受到袭击时,它们不是默默忍受,而是发出一些气味来达到保护自己或者警告同伴的目的。 1. A. memorable B. impressive C. tiring D. bitter 2.
