It’s a sunny March afternoon at Winchester Village Elementary School in Indianapolis, and teacher Natasha Cummings is leading her class in a brand new lesson. It’s the first time she’s teaching it and also likely the last. The second graders audibly take a short quick breath when Cummings explains the day’s activity: They’ll be simulating(a total solar eclipse (日全食) using the real sun, an inflatable globe and a moon made out of a play dough ball mounted on a stick.
On April 8, a narrow strip of North America will experience a total solar eclipse, in which the moon entirely covers the sun, darkening the sky so that only the sun’s corona, a ghostly white ring, will be visible. Indianapolis is one of several cities in the path of totality. The last time that happened was over 800 years ago, and it won’t happen again until 2153. For many of Cummings’ students, this event is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Cummings hopes learning about and witnessing the eclipse will inspire her students, and get them excited about science. It’s an experience she expects them to remember for the rest of their lives. “This is a story you’re gonna be able to tell,” she reflects before class.
In a grassy area outside the school, Cummings’ eclipse simulation begins: Students take turns holding the inflatable globes, and casting a shadow with their play dough moons. Cummings directs them to aim the shadow over the spot on the globe where Indianapolis would be. It’s a little chaotic, but the students quickly figure out how to properly position the moon’s shadow over their hometown.
Thomas Hockey, a professor of astronomy at the University of Northern Iowa, says he didn’t learn about solar eclipses when he was in grade school. He thinks the fact that elementary school teachers like Cummings are now teaching about them is an indication that science education has improved since he was a child. "Science is not done by old, gray-haired people in lab coats, necessarily. Citizens can participate in it. It’s not a magic black box; it’s all around us,” Hockey says.
4. How do the students probably feel when told about the new lesson?
A. Frightened. B. Disappointed. C. Astonished. D. Satisfied.
5. Why is Cummings teaching her students about the eclipse?
A. To improve their story-telling skills. B. To stir up their passion for science.
C. To witness a real total solar eclipse. D. To seize a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
6. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A. The process of the simulation. B. The direction of Cummings.
C. The position of the moon. D. The reaction of the students.
7. What does Thomas Hockey suggest people do to learn science?
A. Do experiments in lab coats. B. Study hard in elementary school.
C. Participate in some magic tricks. D. Experience scientific phenomena.

While there are already apps that guide blind users to a bus stop’s approximate location, those people may unknowingly end up standing too far away from the actual stop. A new app addresses that shortcoming by letting the smartphone’s camera in on the act.
Known as All_Aboard, the AI-based app was developed by a team of scientists at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear treatment and research center. It’s made to be used along with a third-party GPS-based online navigational (导航的) map.
Users start by using other apps to get to a bus stop’s location. They then open All _Aboard and proceed to hold their smartphone up so that its back camera can “see” the surrounding street. Drawing upon a deep learning neural network which was trained on around 10,000 images of bus stops within that city, the app is reportedly able to visually identify the target stop’s sign if it’s within a range of up to 15 meters away. Once the sign has been spotted, the app guides the user via sonar-like beeps (哔哔声) which change pitch and speed as the person gets closer to the bus stop.
In field tests, 24 legally blind volunteers used both online maps and All _Aboard to locate 20 bus stops—10 in an urban setting and 10 in a suburban environment.
When it came to getting close enough to those stops, online maps alone had a success rate of just 52%, whereas All _Aboard boosted the number to 93%. Additionally, while the average distance between the map’s endpoint and the actual bus stop was 6.62 meters with online maps, it was just 1.54 meters with All _Aboard.
“Our findings suggest that the All _Aboard app could help travelers with visual impairments (视力受损) in navigation by accurately detecting the bus stop, and therefore greatly reducing their chance of missing buses due to standing too far from the bus stops,” said Massachusetts Eye and Ear’s Assoc. Prof. Gang Luo. “This study indicates that computer vision-based object recognition capabilities can be used in a complementary (补充的) way and provide added benefit to purely mapping-based, macro-navigation services in real-world settings.”
8. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To highlight other apps.
C. To show the new app’s shortcomings.
D. To detailedly compare the new app with others.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The importance of camera in smartphones.
B. The potential advantage of the new app.
C. How the new app All _ Aboard works.
D. Why users get closer to the bus stop.
10. What can we infer about All _ Aboard from the data given in paragraph 5?
A. High accuracy. B. Good reputation.
C. Perfect property. D. More application.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Blind Users Benefiting From Science
B. A New App Is In The Charge Of Its Users
C. Online Maps Needing Improvement To The Bus Service
D. All _ Aboard Making Navigation Efficient For The Blind

Fresco(湿壁画) refers to painting techniques used on plaster(石膏). Popular during the Renaissance period, especially in Italy, frescoes were usually used to decorate walls of public buildings.
The purest type of fresco painting, also known as "buon fresco", involves mixing pigments(颜料) directly with wet plaster. The color is thus actually part of the material, rather than a coating on top of it. The colors of a buon fresco are especially vibrant and long-lasting; the Bull-Leaping Fresco in Knossos, Crete was created around the 17th-15th centuries BCE, but the colors are still clear today. However, this technique is not without its unique disadvantages. For one thing, colors look different when they are wet than when they are dry. Artists of the time typically mixed their own plaster and color mixtures, working quickly to finish a part of a mural(壁画) before the plaster dried. The mixture they created the next time might have been a slightly different shade. If you look carefully at the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel, you can see which parts must have been completed in a single session by the faint differences in colors.
Fresco secco requires something to be added to the paint to make it stick to the dry plaster. This technique is sometimes used to repair a buon fresco that has been damaged, although the colors are generally not as bright. However, some colors actually worked better with fresco secco. During the Renaissance period, the available pigments for creating blue did not mix well with wet plaster; for this reason, skies, water, and blue clothing sometimes were painted as fresco secco after the buon fresco had dried.
In 1997, the frescoes by Giotto di Bondone in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy were damaged in an earthquake. 150 restorers spent five years gathering 60,000 pieces that they could find and set them back into place, much like a puzzle, although about 35 percent of the frescoes remains incomplete.
12. What does the underlined word "vibrant" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Bright. B. Simple. C. Watery. D. Rare.
13 What does the author want to show by mentioning the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel?
A. It was in Italy that true fresco was widely used.
B. It is crucial to differentiate varied painting styles.
C. It took time for painters to create their unique colors.
D. It was hard to create the exactly same color every time.
14. What makes creating buon frescon differ from creating fresco secco?
A. The limited choice of themes.
B. The amount of water in plaster.
C. The time of creating.
D. The cost of pigments.
15. Which can best describe the repair process of Giotto's frescoes?
A. Slow but creative. B. Complicated and dangerous.
C. Time-consuming and laborious. D. Discouraging but money-saving.

How to Deal with Academic Failure
Experiencing failure in academic settings is inevitable in your journey to study. However, once you get through it, you can bounce back from almost any academic failure.
Adopt the proper mindset
The proper mentality plays a big part in dealing with academic failure. ____16____, focus on how you will feel when you have mastered the areas that give you trouble. Stop thinking of yourself as a failure, and regard yourself as a person with a fixable problem. ____17____
Consider the troubles of chaotic personal relationships and stress. They are the most common external factor making students' academic performance suffer.____18____. Activities including sports, partying, or arts are social distractions that are also a common source of academic struggle. Disorganization is a huge factor. Making an inventory of upcoming assignments work as well.
Bounce back
____19____. Were your grades good and then suddenly fall, slowly decline, or are they changeable? If they slowly declined, this probably indicates a lack of proficiency in a foundational skill set. If your grades suddenly fall, then that can be indicative of the sudden presence of a troublesome external factor, like moving to a new school.
Once you have determined that, you need to develop a plan of action. Try to study at the same times and same places each day, so it becomes a routine. Enlist someone to help you stay accountable to your plan of action.____20____.
A. Identify the trouble spots
B. Analyze extracurricular commitments

It was a Saturday morning as I prepared to take my eight-year-old son, David, to the aquarium. His eyes were widened with excitement, and he chattered non-stop about the sea creatures we would see, the sharks, the dolphins... We boarded the bus, and after a few stops, we made ourselves comfortably seated. David gazed out the window, watching the world go by with wonder.
The bus continued its route, and with each stop, it became increasingly crowded. Passengers of varying ages and backgrounds filled the seats. David and I were engaged in a light-hearted conversation about marine life, our anticipation and joy building with each passing minute.
As we approached a mid-route bus stop, an elderly lady boarded, her movements labored and her legs visibly unsteady. The bus was full, and for a moment, there was an obvious hesitation among the passengers, each perhaps weighing the social morals against their own comfort. The elderly lady seized her walking aid, swaying slightly with each lurch of the vehicle.
Noticing the elderly lady’s struggle, David made a decision. Without a moment’s hesitation, he rose from his seat. His small hand gestured towards the elderly lady. “You can sit here, ma'am,” he said, his voice clear and sincere. The elderly lady’s face transformed with a mixture of surprise and gratitude. “Oh, thank you, boy,” she said, her voice filling up with emotion. David then took her hand gently, helping her navigate through the crowd to the seat he had left for her. With the help of David, the lady eased herself into the seat, her relief evident. I felt pride welling up within me as I watched what David had done. Looking at David, who was standing now, I saw not just the playful child he was known to be, but the empathetic and considerate young man he was growing into.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
As the bus rolled on, it was filled with renewed warmth among the passengers.

C 5. B 6. A 7. D

根据文章第一段内容“While there are already apps that guide blind users to a bus stop’s approximate location, those people may unknowingly end up standing too far away from the actual stop. A new app addresses that shortcoming by letting the smartphone’s camera in on the act.(虽然已经有一些应用程序可以引导盲人用户找到公交车站的大致位置,但这些人可能会在不知情的情况下站得离实际的车站太远。一款新的应用程序可以让智能手机的摄像头拍摄到这一过程,从而弥补了这一缺陷。)”,可知,本段提到虽然已经有应用程序可以引导盲人用户到达公交车站的大致位置,但这些用户可能会在不知不觉中站得离实际站点太远。这为文章想要解决的问题设定了背景和情境,随后在下一段中介绍了新的应用程序All_Aboard。因此,段落1的目的是引入文章的主题。故选A。
根据文章第三段“Users start by using other apps to get to a bus stop’s location. Once the sign has been spotted, the app guides the user via sonar-like beeps(哔哔声) which change pitch and speed as the person gets closer to the bus stop.(用户首先使用其他应用程序来获取公交车站的位置。

A. Bright. B. Simple. C. Watery. D. Rare.
13. What does the author want to show by mentioning the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel?
【答案】12 A 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据文章第二段中的描述“The colors of a buon fresco are especially … and long-lasting; the Bull-Leaping Fresco in Knossos, Crete was created around the 17th-15th centuries BCE, but the colors are still clear today.(buon fresco的颜色特别……且持久;克里特岛克诺索斯的公牛跳跃壁画创作于公元前17-15世纪,但颜色至今仍清晰可见。)”可知,下文说的是克里特岛克诺索斯的公牛跳跃壁画的颜色至今仍清晰可见,可推理出“vibrant”的含义为:颜色明亮、生动,故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的描述“For one thing, colors look different when they are wet than when they are dry. Artists of the time typically mixed their own plaster and color mixtures, working quickly to finish a part of a mural(壁画) before the plaster dried. The mixture they created the next time might have been a slightly different shade. If you look carefully at the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel, you can see which parts must have been completed in a single session by the faint differences in colors.(一方面,颜色湿的时候和干的时候看起来不同。当时的艺术家通常会自己混合石膏和颜料混合物,迅速完成壁画的一部分,以免石膏干透。他们下次混合的混合物可能会有稍微不同的阴影。如果你仔细看看西斯廷教堂的壁画,你可以通过颜色的细微差别看出哪些部分一定是一次性完成的。)”可以推断,作者提到西斯廷教堂的壁画是为了展示每次创造完全相同的颜色是多么困难,故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段的描述“The purest type of fresco painting, also known as "buon fresco", involves mixing pigments(颜料) directly with wet plaster.(最纯粹的壁画类型,也称为“buon fresco”,涉及将颜料直接与湿石膏混合。)”以及第三段的描述“Fresco secco requires something to be added to the paint to make it stick to the dry plaster.(Fresco secco需要在油漆中添加一些东西使其粘附在干石膏上。)”
根据文章最后一段的描述“In 1997, the frescoes by Giotto di Bondone in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy were damaged in an earthquake. 150 restorers spent five years gathering 60,000 pieces that they could find and set them back into place, much like a puzzle, although about 35 percent of the frescoes remains incomplete.(1997年,意大利阿西西圣弗朗西斯大教堂的Giotto di Bondone壁画在一场地震中受损。150名修复者花了五年时间收集了他们能找到的60,000片碎片,并将它们重新拼凑起来,就像拼图一样,尽管大约35%的壁画仍然不完整。)”可知,150名修复者花了五年时间收集碎片,可以推断,Giotto壁画的修复过程是耗时且费力的,故选C项。

The problem is an opportunity, because how a person responds to a problem is what creates success or failure.
C. Achieving academic goals is vitally important
D. Instead of judging yourself for past shortcomings
E. Only by recognizing your problems weren't created overnight
F. Look at the history of your grades and determine the overall trend
G. Talk to a friend, family member or teacher about helping you stay on track
D 17. A 18. B 19. F 20. G

根据下文“Consider the troubles of chaotic personal relationships and stress.(考虑混乱的人际关系和压力带来的麻烦)”以及“Disorganization is a huge factor.(杂乱无章是一个很大的因素)”可知,这是在指出要识别问题所在,与A项“Identify the trouble spots(识别问题所在)”意思相符,故选A项。
根据下文“Activities including sports, partying, or arts are social distractions that are also a common source of academic struggle.(包括运动、聚会或艺术在内的活动是会让人分心的社交活动,也是学业困难的常见来源)”可知,这里是在分析课外活动的影响,与 B 项“Analyze extracurricular commitments(分析课外活动的投入)”表达一致,故选B项。
根据下文“Were your grades good and then suddenly fall, slowly decline, or are they changeable?(你的成绩是好的然后突然下降,慢慢下降,还是多变的?)”可知,是在查看成绩变化的历史情况并确定总体趋势,与 F 项“Look at the history of your grades and determine the overall trend(查看你的成绩历史并确定总体趋势)”意思相符,故选F项。
根据上文“Enlist someone to help you stay accountable to your plan of action.(争取有人帮助你对自己的行动计划负责)”可知,与G项“Talk to a friend, family member or teacher about helping you stay on track(和朋友、家人或老师谈谈,让他们帮助你保持正轨)”表达的意思一致,都是说要找人帮忙监督,故选G项。

As the bus rolled on, it was filled with renewed warmth among the passengers. David, who was standing by the window now, caught other passengers’ attention due to his kindness towards the old lady. The passengers, who had been sitting quietly around David and absorbed in their own world, began to express words of compliment and smiles of encouragement to David. It was as if a single act had broken the ice, sparking a chain reaction of goodwill. Upon reaching the aquarium, David and I waved goodbye to the passengers, making our way to explore the marine world.
That evening, as we returned home, I couldn't help but reflect on the true treasure of the day. It wasn’t the sharks or the dolphins that left me the deepest impression, but the character of my son, which shone as brightly as any sea creature we had seen. David’s act of kindness on the bus had not only made the elderly lady’s journey more comfortable but had also reminded us that the future is in good hands with next generation like him leading the way. It was a day when my son, David, showed the world the true meaning of kindness, which made me really happy.
