A. want to eat out B. work on the Internet C. like traveling D. have a free account (账户) B As children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A's, the honor roll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers. When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life and careers don’t have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer. I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with what she wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do "some big things," like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn't sure of the right answer for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the answer. We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. The grown-up definition of the “right answer" is different than that in school. What would you do if you weren't afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to: What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at? If I had no fears, what would I do? What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal (even if it's not perfectly clear)? I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather than “right answer” questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today? 4. What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph? A. Life is harder for adults than children. B. Academic excellence is not necessary. C. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school. D. Rules in life are different from those in school. 5. What is wrong with the college student? A. She does badly in her studies. B. Her parents are not proud of her. C. She feels puzzled about her life career. D. She is not sure whether to do" some big things". 6. When looking for the answer in life, you need to . A. trust your parents B. listen to your heart C. follow valued advice D. learn from your classmates 7. Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer? A. What do I love to do? B. What matters most to me in life? C. What will make me look successful? D What will I regret not doing when I'm 80? C An expert has revealed whether carrots truly help you see in the dark and if an apple a day actually keeps the doctor away. Nutritionist Lily Soutter also clarifies if it really takes seven years to digest chewing gum (口香糖), whether you can swim after eating and if fish is good for the brain. She confirms that while carrots contain lots of vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy vision, they don’t help you see any better in the dark. Similarly, enjoying an apple a day won’t in itself reduce your chances of needing to visit a doctor, and chewing gum doesn’t take seven years to leave your system. And sadly, eating celery (芹菜) doesn’t burn more calories than you gain from eating it, despite 23 percent believing it to be the case. Yogurt maker Onken teamed up with Lily. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people, finding half of them are “confused” about food fact and fiction. Onken said, “Many of us rely on what we remember from school when it comes to nutrition. But we’re learning new things all the time about what different foods do for our health, such as the benefit of fermented (发酵的) foods to our gut and immune system. While some of what’s passed down over generations is super advice, some of it isn’t.” The study also found that swimming right after eating is wrongly believed by 34 percent of adults to be something you shouldn’t do. In fact, it’s exercising to high intensity immediately after eating that should be avoided, as it can give you a sudden pain. Almost half believe fish is good for the brain. They’re right, as long as they’re eating oily fish, because essential omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish contribute to normal brain function. Other “fake news” wrongly believed by many of those surveyed include eating chicken soup helps if you have a cold (27%) and drinking fruit juice is as healthy as eating whole fruit (17%). 8. What can we learn about Lily Soutter’s findings? A. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. B. Eating celery surely helps us lose weight. C. Eating carrots contributes to healthy vision. D. Carrots help us see things better in the dark. 9. Why is Onken mentioned in the text? A. To appeal to more people to find right food facts. B. To inform people of the benefit of fermented foods. C. To prove there are many makers working with Lily. D. To point out many people’s mistaken nutrition ideas. 10. What attitude should we take to the nutrition ideas passed down over generations? A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Learning New Things Is Vital to Health B. How to Fight “Fake News” About Health C. Welcome to the Most Popular Food Myths D. Nutritionist Reveals Truth About Food Myths D A hybrid electric vehicle (混合动力车) or HEV is a vehicle driven by the combination of petrol engine and electric motor. Terrence has been driving a HEV for five years. He really doesn’t understand why more people aren’t accepting them. “I probably spend about $ 7 a day on petrol,” the taxi driver told news. com. au. In his previous conventional vehicle Terrence said he was spending up to $ 30 a day on petrol, meaning he saves almost $ 6000 every year. The Toyota spokesman said this was quite a high saving and official tests estimate (估计) an average driver would only save about 33 percent off their current bill. This means a driver paying $ 30 a day on petrol would see their bill drop to about $ 20 using the hybrid. “A taxi driver that drives in built-up areas and spends little time on highways will notice a higher fuel saving,” he said. “Low speeds allow the electric motors to be used more and the petrol engine used less.” While some people are skeptical about how reliable hybrids are, Terrence said he had never run out of power. His Camry cost about $ 34,000 and so after five years, it’s nearly paid for itself. “For cab drivers, it’s a real advantage because of the cost-effectiveness,” he said. Terrence has no complaints about the car. “I love it, the calm and quietness of it, the simplicity of it—you just jump in and go. The maintenance(保养)is really low. But the only difficulty is finding someone to service the car as there are not many experienced mechanics(机修工).” Terrence said it’s “extraordinary” that more drivers aren’t buying more hybrid electric vehicles and that governments are not encouraging this more. “I think people have a view that you have to plug it in, which is not true. A lack of information about the cars may be stopping people from taking the plunge. It’s not promoted at all for the public to understand—it’s simplifying the actual owning of a car—you don’t have to do so many things to own it and run it, it’s just so much simpler. Why wouldn’t the government promote such a thing?” 12. How much does an average driver save each day by driving a hybrid, according to the Toyota spokesman? A. $ 30 B. $ 20 C. $ 10 D. $ 7 13. Terrence’s problem with his HEV at the moment is about the ________. A. speed B. power C. price D. service 14. When saying “extraordinary”, Terrence thinks it is ________. A understandable B. wonderful C. doubtful D. unbelievable 15. What does Terrence think prevent the popularity of hybrid cars? A. The difficulty in servicing the car. B. The restriction of the government. C. The lack of information about HEV. D. The inconvenience with charging the car. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone is faced with problems at some point or the other. ____16____ The problems, however, become different when past strategies do not work and there is no obvious solution. I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door mum asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going?” I answered back without hesitation (毫不犹豫地), “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed in relief. My plan had worked so far! I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at full speed. After half an hour I was at the beach seeking for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily. Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and it fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide (潮水) came in and carried the ball further away from the shore, I was excited. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current ((海洋或江河的)水流) swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草) tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly. D. What will I regret not doing when I'm 80? 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. Nutritionist Reveals Truth About Food Myths 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. Similarly, enjoying an apple a day won’t in itself reduce your chances of needing to visit a doctor, and chewing gum doesn’t take seven years to leave your system. And sadly, eating celery (芹菜) doesn’t burn more calories than you gain from eating it, despite 23 percent believing it to be the case.(她证实,虽然胡萝卜含有大量的维生素A,有助于保持健康的视力,但它们并不能帮助你在黑暗中看得更清楚。同样,每天吃一个苹果本身不会减少你去看医生的机会,口香糖也不需要7年才能离开你的身体。可悲的是,吃芹菜燃烧的卡路里并不比你从吃它中获得的卡路里多,尽管23%的人认为是这样。)”可知,吃胡萝卜有助于保持健康的视力。故选C。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Yogurt maker Onken teamed up with Lily. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people, finding half of them are ‘confused’ about food fact and fiction.(酸奶制造商Onken与Lily合作。他们对2000人进行了一项调查,发现其中一半的人对食物的事实和虚构感到‘困惑’。)”以及第五段“Onken said, ‘Many of us rely on what we remember from school when it comes to nutrition. But we’re learning new things all the time about what different foods do for our health, such as the benefit of fermented (发酵的) foods to our gut and immune system. While some of what’s passed down over generations is super advice, some of it isn’t.’(Onken说:‘谈到营养,我们中的许多人都依赖于我们在学校学到的东西。但我们一直在学习新的东西,了解不同的食物对我们的健康有什么好处,比如发酵食物对我们的肠道和免疫系统的好处。虽然有些是代代相传的超级建议,但有些则不是。’)”可知Onken认为我们一直在学习新的东西,了解不同的食物对我们的健康有什么好处,代代相传的或者依赖在学校时记忆的营养观念有些是错误的,由此可知,提到Onken是为了指出许多人错误的营养观念。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“Onken said, ‘Many of us rely on what we remember from school when it comes to nutrition. A. understandable B. wonderful C. doubtful D. unbelievable 15. What does Terrence think prevent the popularity of hybrid cars? A. The difficulty in servicing the car. B. The restriction of the government. C. The lack of information about HEV. D. The inconvenience with charging the car. 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. C 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍混合动力汽车(HEV)。它是一种由汽油发动机和电动机结合驱动的汽车。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中This means a driver paying $ 30 a day on petrol would see their bill drop to about $ 20 using the hybrid.可知,这意味着,使用混合动力汽车的司机,如果每天花30美元加汽油,他们的账单就会降至20美元左右。所以丰田发言人说,一名普通司机每天驾驶混合动力车能节省 $ 10($ 30 -$ 20)。故选C。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句But the only difficulty is finding someone to service the car as there are not many experienced mechanics(机修工).可知,但唯一的困难是找个人来维修汽车,因为没有多少有经验的机械师。所以Terrence目前的HEV问题在于服务。故选D。 【14题详解】 词义猜测题。根据最后一段中Terrence said it’s “extraordinary” that more drivers aren’t buying more hybrid electric vehicles and that governments are not encouraging this more. Terrence说,越来越多司机没有购买更多混合动力电动汽车,政府也没有更多地鼓励这种做法,这是“非同寻常”的。由此推知划线词的意思是“不可思议的”,故选D。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中A lack of information about the cars may be stopping people from taking the plunge.可知,特伦斯认为关于HEV的信息缺乏阻碍了混合动力汽车的推行。故选C。 【点睛】做词义猜测题时,切不可脱离语境想当然。在句子或段落中,我们可以利用熟悉的词语,根据语言环境所表示的关系推断生词词义。尤其注意划线词前后的内容。本题第3小题,根据最后一段中Terrence said it’s “extraordinary” that more drivers aren’t buying more hybrid electric vehicles and that governments are not encouraging this more. Terrence说,越来越多的司机没有购买更多混合动力电动汽车,政府也没有更多地鼓励这种做法,这是“非同寻常”的。由此推知划线词的意思是“不可思议的”,故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone is faced with problems at some point or the other. ____16____ The problems, however, become different when past strategies do not work and there is no obvious solution. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current ((海洋或江河的)水流) swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草) tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
