While other artists might use watercolors or oil paints, Mbongeni Buthelezi
uses waste plastic to create portraits (肖像) at his studio in Booysens,
Johannesburg. His medium is the plastic litter he collects from local rubbish
dumps and city streets.
"Animals are dying and fish in the ocean are dying-
because of this material. It is we humans that need to take responsibility," said
the 56-year-old artist. Over the past three decades, Buthelezi has been using his
works to both highlight and address the issue.
Buthelezi's use of waste wasn't always in defense of the environment. He first
began using plastic litter because he couldn't afford expensive oil paints while
studying at the college. Then, he developed a unique technique of using an
electric heat gun that produced hot air to melt (熔化) the plastic. According to
Buthelezi, this is more environmentally friendly than using flames to melt plastic
and doesn't release noxious smoke and gases into the atmosphere.
His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick
plastic background, often in more than one layer (层) to create complex textures
and color combinations. He calls the process simple and random, but believes
that the final pieces speak for themselves. "I'm interested in finding the details in
the painting, but also see the whole story as you view it from afar," he says.

Buthelezi also uses his art as a vehicle to tell important stories about South
Africa and the difficulties of life in South Africa's townships. In 2o1o, online
magazine Live Out Loud said his art "reflects humanity's often harmful impact on
the environment, but his original use of waste objects to picture an often forgotten
group of people truly sets him apart". His paintings have been exhibited in South
Africa, as well as Germany, the US, and Holland, for years.
24. Why did Buthelezi originally use waste plastic for his art?
A. To make his works eye-catching.
B. To develop his own artistic style.
C. To draw attention to plastic pollution.
D. To reduce the cost of creating art.
25. What does the underlined word "noxious" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Poisonous. B. Burning.
C. Floating.
D.Heavy.
26. How does Buthelezi create his artworks on a thick plastic surface?
A. He applies brightly painted plastic.
B. He combines plastic with watercolors.
C. He lavers the melted pieces of waste plastic.
D. He uses glue to stick the plastic litter together.
27. What can be inferred about Buthelezi's works?
A. They cover limited subjects.
B. They have been well received.
C. They have sold well at home and abroad.
D. They are less expressive of poor people's life.

Fountains of lava erupted from the Sundhnikur volcanic svstem in southwest
Iceland on January 14th, 2024. Lava flows welled up from a new gap, attacking
the suburbs of Grindavik with at least three houses in their path burnt down.
Nearby, construction vehicles that had been working for weeks to build large
earthen dams in an attempt to divert (使转向) the lava's flow had to pull back.
Lava is subject to gravity like other fluids, so it will flow down along a path
of steepest descent (斜坡). With the temperature of its molten rock often well
above 1,ooo degrees Celsius, not much can stand in its way. Humans have tried
many ways to stop lava in the past, from attempting to freeze it in place by
cooling it with sea water, to using explosives to cut off its supply. However, no
attempt was successful.
Most recent efforts have focused instead on building dams in an attempt to
divert the lava's flow towards a different path of steepest descent, into a different
“lavashed", where lava would naturally flow. Results have been mixed, but
diversion can be successful if the lava flow can be clearly diverted into a distinct
area where lava would naturally flow-without threatening a different community
in the process. Many attempts to divert lava have failed, however. Barriers built
in Italy to stop Mt.'Etna's lava flows in 1992 slowed the flow, but the lava
eventually overtopped each one.
Diverting lava in Grindavik is difficult, in part because the land around
Grindavik is relatively flat, making it harder to identify a clear alternative path of
steepest descent for redirecting the lava. Icelandic officials reported on January
15th that most of the lava from the main fissure had flowed along the outside of
the barier. However, a new gap had also opened inside the perimeter (外围),
sending the lava into a neighborhood. Unfortunately, that implies that Grindavik
remains at risk.

First prize in the creative category of this year's Sony World Photography
Awards was presented in April to Boris Eldagsen. However, Mr. Eldagsen turned
down the prize and revealed that his image had been created not by a camera but
by artificial intelligence (AI).
By identifying and emphasizing the patterns they see in their training data,
AI models are developing an artistic style of their own. Open platforms such as
Midjourney and Dall-E generate images in seconds based on simple written
prompts(提示). No artistic skill is required."The image I produce isn't my
work. My work is the prompt," says Nick St Pierre, a designer in New York who
got into AI last year.
With updates to AI models come changes to their works. David Holz, the
founder and boss of Midjourney, rejects the idea that there is a single AI style.
The latest version of the program, released in March, has changed some of the
tendencies of the previous one,
he says. "The look of our images has changed
five times now over the past 12 months and will continue to do so," Mr. Holz
insists. “People want diversity.
As the models improve, they will remain dependent on man-made training
data.
"Image data are indexes(索引l) of a society's changing ideas," says
James Coupe, head of photography at the Royal College of Art in London, where
he is setting up an AI lab. He compares AI-generated images to a project in the
1990s by a pair of Russian artists. They surveyed public tastes in 14 countries
and produced artworks based on the results, which satisfy most of the people.
By identifying and picking common styles in their training data, generative
AI models are playing a similar role. Mr. Meyer, a researcher at Ruhr University
Bochum in Germany, thinks their ability to summarize visual stvles or eras could
make them powerful tools of analysis for art historians.
32. What's the function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To present the argument.
C. To predict the conclusion.
D. To describe the phenomenon.
33. What does Nick St Pierre think plays a key role in creating AI images?
A. Drawing skills.
B. Training data.
C. Written prompts.
D. Platform popularity.

What is repetition learning? 36 Repeating the learning that you wish to
undertake several times, to allow your brain or body to keep the information or skills
as necessary. This is true whether it is reading a mathematics formula(公式) until it
is memorized or kicking a football at a goal until you have perfected the technique.
You should know that repetition works best if you space it out over time-
something called spaced repetition. If you are trying to commit something to
memory, try repeating the information throughout the day, at increasing intervals.
For example, you might first, look at a word on a flash card, and repeat it in
your head a few times. Then look at it one minute later.
37
Repetition is a crucial learning tool because it facilitates knowledge transfer
from the conscious to intuitive(直观) or deeper recollection levels. The deepest
"aha" moments result from interaction with text, followed by another encounter.
38
Learning is a gradual process where you interact with ideas and
progressively amass(积累) concepts. Repetition matters because it speeds up
and deepens the engagement process.
39
Redoing a task allows the brain to make new connections, improving
performance. College students, teachers, and anyone looking to learn or teach a
new skill or language will find that repetition boosts retention(保留). This post
gives a detailed account of the benefits of repetition for learning.
Repeated review of previously learned material enhances connections in the
brain and aids in the retention of content longer.
40 Teachers have long
applied repetition in early childhood development classes and during teaching
languages because it's the first and most critical principle of learning.
A. Then five minutes later, then ten, and so on.
B. Repeating an encounter strengthens it in your memory.
C. You remember better when you learn through repetition.
D. The secret to improving your long memory is really simple.
E. The brain can link new knowledge to relevant old information
F. Some factors may influence the connection between different regions of
your brains.
G. We all know"practice makes perfect" and that is what repetition learning
boils down to.

完整的短文。
On the way to an appointment, I drove past a boat on the side of the road
with a For Sale sign. I had a quick thought that my son and I would have really
enjoyed the boat. He and I had loved being out on the water. We loved to go
fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving. We also liked
going to an island near Tampa Bay to look for sharks' teeth.
That night, my son, who had lost his life in a war, came back to me in a
dream. He told me to buy the boat that I had seen. He was very specific about
what he wanted me to do with the boat: provide boating trips to veterans(老兵),
military service members and families who had borne the death of a warrior. He
wanted me to take them to some of his favorite places in the bay and on various
rivers in the area.
The dream woke me up, but I was happy about having the dream. It was
comforting to see my son and hear his voice. For the next two nights, I had the
dream again. I had been diagnosed with PTSD, whose symptoms intensified due
tolack of sleep.
My doctor said I missed my son too much and advised me to drive back to
see if the boat was still there. "If it is gone, maybe your dreams will stop. If it is
still there, it sounds like it is going to be way out of your price range since you only
have about $2, 5oo. Maybe knowing you can't afford it will stop the dreams.
I jumped in my car and drove back to where I had seen the boat. It was still
there. I pulled in to take a closer look at the For Sale sign. There was no price
listed, just a phone number. I pulled out my cell phone and dialed the number.
