It makes a great first stop in Port Macquarie before you head out to tour the town. Wander into the building, and you’ll find the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre, with details about all the things to see and do in Port Macquarie. Then you can decide what you’d like to see and do there. So this centre is strongly recommended. After visiting the centre, you can admire exhibitions in the art gallery. Although I was the class clown at school, there’s an introverted (内向的) side to my personality. That’s because I have a neurological (神经系统的) condition that makes it hard for my brain to process visual information. Words swim on the page for me. I wanted to learn how to read but I couldn’t.
In primary school, I didn’t talk to any teachers or family about this. I was clever at hiding it. When I had to write anything down, I guessed, forming what I hoped was the right words. I became good at learning by heart.
When I started secondary school, a student in class made me stand on a chair and read. It was so humiliating that I developed a bad stutter (口吃). I continued to fall through the net, emotionally and educationally. The only thing I loved was practical biology. I wanted to be a doctor.
Then I left school and joined the military. I was determined to be a medic and trained hard. But things unraveled (揭开) when I did a course in pre-hospital emergency care. I passed all my practical exams, preparing for them by watching others. The problem was the written exam. I was so embarrassed but had to tell the examining doctor that I couldn’t read. He urged me to get back into education. I was 34.
I applied to do a medical degree at the Open University (OU). It was back to basics on the course. I knew the alphabet and some words, but my vocabulary was small. I paid for a tutor, who worked with me every week, teaching me to understand words through pictures.
It took me nine years to get that degree. Now, aged 47, I’m an ambassador for the OU, winning an award for embracing education so late in life. I now teach pre-hospital emergency care to medical school students. I also teach children and adults with learning difficulties because I want to give others the chances I had.
I still struggle to read a menu if I’m not wearing my special glasses, but luckily there’s always someone around to lend me a hand. I look back and wonder how many other people have struggled with education and where they are now. I’m proof that no one should be discounted (忽视), ever.

Since 2001, robotic tools have revolutionized the practice of surgery. They have greatly reduced the stress and physical demands normally placed on surgeons and have made certain procedures possible.
One example is "keyhole surgery", or minimally invasive (微创) surgery, which normally requires surgeons to stand at awkward angles and make difficult movements with their hands to make a cut inside the patient. But in June 2022, surgeon James Ansell used 3D glasses and two joysticks (操纵杆) to control four robotic arms to perform a procedure to remove a cancerous tumor (肿瘤). "My colleague said . that this feels like cheating, " Ansell said to The Guardian.
Another area of surgery that has had major technological breakthroughs in recent years is telesurgery. Telesurgery, or remote surgery, is the use of technology that allows a surgeon to perform a procedure on a patient not in the same physical location.
Normally, telesurgery relies on a wired connection due to concerns of harming the patient if a wireless connection were to drop during surgery, but China made several advancements in wireless telesurgery based on 5G technology.
China achieved the first 5G-based remote operation in March 2019 involving a brain surgery procedure between a surgeon in Sanya and a patient in Beijing, a distance totaling nearly 3, 000 kilometers, reported CGTN. More recently, a team of surgeons successfully completed remote micron-level eye surgery on rabbits located in a different city, reported China Daily. The rabbits were at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, whereas the surgical team who operated on them via a 5G robot were at the Hainan Eye Hospital in Haikou, Hainan province.
Looking to the future, people hope that remote surgery could become commonplace to help heal injured soldiers on the battlefield while keeping surgeons at a safe distance. Some even believe that robotic systems, combined with AI, could one day surpass human surgeons. In 2022, engineers at Johns Hopkins University in the US used their Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) to suture (缝合)the ends of a severed intestine (断肠) in four pigs, showing that certain procedures can be done autonomously by robots.
But, given current technological limitations and the high costs of these robots which can cost millions of dollars, the complete robot takeover of surgery may still be a while off.
46. What does the "keyhole surgery" example intend to show?
A. The complexity of robotic surgery.
B. The challenges in using robotic tools.
C. The progress enabled by robotic tools.
D. The need for advanced 3D technology.

48. What can be inferred about robots in the medical field from the passage?
A. They have not yet been in use.
B. They are currently in high demand.
C. They have surpassed human capabilities.
D. Their development still has a long way to go.
49. What prevents the widespread adoption of robotic surgery systems?
A. Unavailability of 5G technology.
B. Resistance from medical institutions.
C. Technological limitations and high costs.
D. Lack of skilled surgeons to operate them.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The benefits of remote surgery.
B. China's achievements in surgery.
C. The advancements in medical robotics.
D. The use of 5G technology in robotic surgery.

How many times have you found yourself in conversations with friends, family members or loved ones and discovered that you had completely tuned out to what they were saying? How much of our attention are we truly giving to the people who are supposed to be important to us?
According to research cited by Wright State University, while most people believe they are good listeners who don’t need to improve their listening skills, the average person only listens at about 25 percent efficiency.
So why aren’t we better listeners? As a society, we may be growing more narcissistic A 2007 study found a rise in self-centeredness and narcissism among college students. If we, as a culture, are becoming more self-centered, how can we, as individuals, work to become more caring and compassionate communicators?
We can begin by changing our attitudes toward conversations. As Stephen R. Covey wrote in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand but to reply.” A dialogue is an opportunity to learn, to see things from a new perspective, to open your eyes to new information and possibilities. Yet, too often we engage in conversation as if it’s a debate. We speak to hear our own voices — our own pre-existing opinions. In doing so, we tend to space out when spoken to. We wait, perhaps even patiently or politely, for the other person to finish, so we can say something we feel is of value.
Playwright Wilson Mizner said, “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while, he knows something.” Listening doesn’t just expand our knowledge on an intellectual level; it enables us to have a more personal, in-depth understanding of our closest friends. Relationships are truly enriched by an equal back-and-forth exchange in communication. When these dynamics become more one-sided, we tend to lose interest and create distance in our friendships, with less trust established, less honesty exchanged.
Thankfully, we can all improve our listening skills. Maybe we aren’t as good a listener as we believe. Do we tend to focus too much on ourselves — both in positive and negative ways? Do we get distracted by an inner coach, rather than living in the moment and really engaging in what’s being said? As we learn to quiet that inner voice in our minds, we can start to open ourselves up to others, becoming better listeners, thinkers, lovers and friends.
51. What is the author’s purpose in showing the social phenomena in Paragraph 1?
A. To show most people are confident about their listening skills.
B. To express his concerns about people’s lack of attention when talking.
C. To introduce the fact that people have low efficiency of listening in life.
D. To provide some information about how people behave in conversation.
52. Why does the author cite the research data from the year 2007?
A. To prove college students have become more self-cenfered and narcissistic over time.
B. To show the belief in people’s listening skills is outdated and needs to be updated.
C. To provide an example of how society’s narcissism affects personal relationships.
D. To support the argument that society is becoming more self-centered and narcissistic.
53. Based on the views of Stephen R. Covey and Wilson Mizner, which of the following statements is true?
A. People should listen to learn and see things from a new perspective.
B. A good listener is popular but does not necessarily know everything.
C. Most people listen with the intention to understand, not to reply.
D We should speak to hear our own voices and pre-existing opinions.
54. What does the underline phrase “space out” in Paragraph 4mean?
A. Become focused. B. Feel confused.
C. Be absent-minded. D. Remain anxious.
55. Which of the following titles best captures the main idea?
A. The Decline of Listening in Modern Society
B. Improving Listening Skills for Better Relationships
C. The Impact of Narcissism on Social Communication
D. Why We Should Listen More and Speak Less

When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.
56. What was the author’s most severe moment of his life?(No more than 8 words)

But given current technological limitations and the high costs of these robots which can cost millions of dollars, the complete robot takeover of surgery may still be a while off.

根据第二段“According to research cited by Wright State University, while most people believe they are good listeners who don’t need to improve their listening skills, the average person only listens at about 25 percent efficiency.”(根据莱特州立大学引用的研究,虽然大多数人认为他们是好的倾听者,不需要提高他们的倾听技巧,但一般人的倾听效率只有25%左右。)
根据第三段“As a society, we may be growing more narcissistic (自我陶醉的). A 2007 study found a rise in self-centeredness and narcissism among college students.”(作为一个社会,我们可能变得越来越自恋。
根据第四段Stephen R. Covey的观点“A dialogue is an opportunity to learn, to see things from a new perspective, to open your eyes to new information and possibilities.”(对话是一个学习的机会,是从一个新的角度看问题,看到新的信息和可能性的机会。)和第五段Wilson Mizner的话“A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while, he knows something.”(一个好的倾听者不仅在任何地方都受欢迎,而且不久之后,他就会知道一些事情。) 故选A。
根据第四段“We speak to hear our own voices — our own pre-existing opinions.”(我们说话是为了听到自己的声音——我们自己已有的观点。)和“We wait, perhaps even patiently or politely, for the other person to finish, so we can say something we feel is of value.”(我们耐心地、礼貌地等着对方把话说完,这样我们才能说一些我们觉得有价值的话。)
根据第四段“We can begin by changing our attitudes toward conversations.”(我们可以从改变我们对对话的态度开始。)和最后一段“Thankfully, we can all improve our listening skills.”(感谢的是,我们都可以提高我们的倾听技巧。)、“As we learn to quiet that inner voice in our minds, we can start to open ourselves up to others, becoming better listeners, thinkers, lovers and friends.”(当我们学会让内心的声音安静下来时,我们就可以开始向别人敞开心扉,成为更好的倾听者、思考者、爱人和朋友。)

_______________________________________________________________________________
57. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 2? (No more than 3 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
58. What message does the author want to convey with his personal experience in the 3rd paragraph? (No more than 15 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
59. Why did the author thank the University of Georgia? (No more than 10 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
60. What will you do if you are in a dark moment? Please explain. (No more than 20 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
56. His almost being kicked out of PhD program
57. be full of
58. What seems like bad news now can turn out to be good in the future
59. The research and writing training helped him professionally and academically
60. I will seek support and stay positive, believing that the difficulties are temporary and trying to find a solution.
根据文章第一段“When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016. (当我回想起生命中最艰难的时刻时,具有讽刺意味的是,许多事情最后都变成了我的祝福。最严重的一次是我几乎被踢出2016年在乔治亚大学的博士项目。)”可知,作者一生中最艰难的时刻是在2016年作者差点被踢出在乔治亚大学的博士项目。故答案为His almost being kicked out of PhD program。
根据划线词组下一句“I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends. (我大部分时间都在接受治疗来应对这种压力,而唯一让我能够忍受这一切的是来自家人和朋友的巨大支持。)”可知,由于课程不适合作者,作者整整一年都充满了疲倦、不安全、恐惧和排斥。由此可知,划线词组的意思和“充满”相似。故答案为be full of。
根据第三段内容“I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.” What seems like bad news now can turn out to be good in the future。
根据文章第四题“Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable. (具有讽刺意味的是,乔治亚大学的研究和写作训练对我的学术、专业和个人写作都有很大的帮助。我在乔治亚努力学习,并得到了回报:我经历的学习和成长是无与伦比的。)”可知,作者感谢乔治亚大学是因为那里的研究和写作训练对他的学术、专业和个人写作能力发展有重要帮助。故答案为The research and writing training helped him professionally and academically.
I will seek support and stay positive, believing that the difficulties are temporary and trying to find a solution.

Dear Chris,
In response to your request, I have conducted the survey on English extensive reading among my classmates. Here are the results:
The majority of the participants (73%) occasionally engage in this practice.Very few (7%) of those surveyed report reading frequently while one fifth (20%) admit they have never done it before.
As a passionate bookworm, I definitely vote for the “frequently” option. First an foremost, extensive reading deepens my appreciation for English, which in turn increases my language proficiency. Second, the worlds created by the authors, either fictional or not, allow me to know society and myself better, enabling me to see a new world. Last but not least, not only can extensive reading enable me to broaden my horizons but also cause me to foster my creativity. While I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be, I recognize its importance and will tryto incorporate it into my routine.
Thanks for involving me in your research. I hope you find the above information useful. If you have any other questions, please let me know as soon as possible.
Yours,
Li Jin
