I am Garrison. I live on a small farm in Kenya. As a child, I enjoyed trying new ideas. Sometimes I could make my own inventions, such as electronic toys from car parts and peach-picking sticks. I also made other useful daily things for my neighbours.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. One night, a lion came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. So I decided to “invent” a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought the lion was scared of fire. But I came to know that didn’t help, because it was even helping the lion to see through the cowshed (牛棚).
And a second idea was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lion into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But the lion was very clever. It came the first day, saw the scarecrow, and went back. But the second day, it came and found that the scarecrow didn’t move. It was always there! So the lion jumped in and killed another cow.
However, one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a flashlight. To my surprise, the lion didn’t show up. Then I realized that the lion was afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea…

What do you think of a “talking kitchen”? A French Digital (数字的) Kitchen has been developed at Newcastle University in the UK. It teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time. For the first time, students can learn the language by the following cooking steps.
All grammar and ▲ have been carefully chosen to make sure the users can understand French well. After learning for some time, the users can test themselves by doing a short test on the computer.
The kitchen project was started by professor Paul Seedhouse. He became interested in the idea after he visited another kind of talking kitchen. He said, “The purpose of the French Digital Kitchen is to make learning a language more interesting and more educational.”
How does the kitchen work? There is a computer in the kitchen. With this computer, the users can first choose a French recipe (食谱) that they want to follow. Using information in the computer, the kitchen start to guide the users how to make a French dish. If you follow the instructions on the computer, it moves on to the next. If you go wrong, the program goes back and repeats the recipe or information. At any time, the users can ask the kitchen to repeat the recipe or any information.
The new kitchen can be used in schools, universities and even people’s homes. The researchers can also be developing the European Digital Kitchen, for the next three years.

The Mars rover(探测器) Zhurong has traveled more than 1.9 km since it first set its wheels on the surface of the planet in May last year.
Since May last year, Zhurong has worked on the surface of Mars for 342 Martian days at a distance of 240 million kilometers from Earth. A Martian day is about 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth. Zhurong touched down in the northern half of Mars, on May 15th, 2021. Since then, it has collected surface rock samples(样品)and taken pictures.
Mars is about to enter the winter season, during which night temperatures will drop to -100℃, with a high probability of sandstorms. Mrtian winters last about six Earth months.
Scientists have made special designs on the Zhurong rover, including low temperature resistance(阻力), sand resistance, power safty and other features, to make sure that the rover can work safely on Mars.
It is also reported that lunar(月球的) rover Yutu-2, or Jade Rabbit-2, 2019, has been worked for 42 lunar days since the first-ever soft landing in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on January 3, 2019, and moved 1,181 meters on the moon surface.

It is impossible to name all Chinese customs in a single article. Even so, in this passage we bring you four Chinese customs that you may not know. Here we go!
Asians usually do not show their feelings openly, also avoiding any unnecessary physical contact(接触). The Chinese see badly that people kiss each other on the cheeks, shaking hands was also frowned(皱眉)upon in the past. For them, it is enough to make a small nod when greeting.

Service hours:

In Qin dynasty, there was a man called Shang Yang. He was a statesman and worked out many reforms (改革) for the state. But his reforms were not easily accepted at first. Most people didn’t trust him. So he came up with an idea. He put a thin wooden pole (木杆) at the south gate of the Qin capital. Many people came to see him and the pole.
Then, in front of the crowd, Shang Yang said loudly, “The man who takes this people to the north gate will get to gold pieces.” It was a simple job and the reward (报酬) was so large.
