B As I was young, smart phones weren’t created, and our TV only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure. I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again. I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last turning and saw a house in the distance. I recognized that house. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said: “All roads lead home.” It is true. In this life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though, is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours. 4. Why did the author hardly feel bored when he was young? A. Because he had many friends. B. Because he used to explore the old dirt road. C. Because he could watch TV all day. D. Because he could have fun in nature. 5. How did the author feel when he was exploring the dirt road? A. He was unconscious. B. He felt nervous. C. He thought he would be trapped in the woods. D. Always make choices on our own. B. All roads lead home. C Every effort is worthwhile. D. It’s our attitude that matters in our life. C Witnessed by organizers, sports figures, performers and students, the flame for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games—housed in a red lantern—drew crowds of onlookers as it was escorted (护送)by volunteers into the ceremony held at Beijing's Olympic Tower. The flame arrived early on Wednesday, October 20 after being flown from Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, where it was lit two days earlier. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. Games events are scheduled in three zones—downtown Beijing, the capital’s northwest Yanqing district and co-host Zhangjiakou in Hebei province. As an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games, the torch relay plays a significant role in promoting the host's international image while spreading the message of peace, solidarity, friendship and health. Due to the pandemic, however, games organizers have cut back the traditional torch relay to a small-scale event. The relay will take place in three host areas and involve about 1,200 torchbearers. The shortened torch relay with reduced crowds will help ensure the health and safety of all participants as well as that of local communities. The relay is scheduled for Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, with the route connecting landmarks, historical sites and major tourism attractions in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The traditional offline event will make sure that people get to feel the warmth of the flame and get inspired by the Olympic spirit up close. An online version of the torch relay making use of virtual reality (VR)technologies is also planned for social media platforms. Although the length and duration of the torch relay has been reduced, this represents an innovative approach to maximize the benefits of the technology in connecting more people in an interactive way. The designs of the torch, lantern and cauldron (主火炬)echo each other within a consistent concept that strikes a strong impression of dynamism and vitality. The lantern, which will be used for the flame exhibition tour, is based on the Changxin Palace Lamp, a bronze oil lamp from the Western Han Dynasty, while the cauldron features the same red and silver colors and cloud pattern as the torch. Drawing inspiration from the main cauldron for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, the torch for the Beijing 2022 Games is called the uflying ribbon". 8. How was the flame sent to the welcoming ceremony in Beijing? A. On a tower. B. In a red lantern. C. By a sports figure. D. Through VR technologies. 9. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The preparation work has been adapted to the pandemic situation. B. The Olympic Games help promote the host's international image. C. The torch relay is an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games. D. Games organizers must ensure the health and safety of all participants. 10. Why are VR technologies used in the torch relay? A. To welcome more athletes to the relay. B. To attract people to the tourism attractions. C. To connect more people in an interactive way. D. To make people feel the warmth of the flame close. 11. What do we know about the 2022 Winter Olympic Games? A. It is scheduled from Feb. 2 to Feb. 4. B. Zhangjiakou will co-host the games events. C. The torch relay will avoid historical sites in Beijing. D. The designers of the torch are inspired by flying ribbon. D Russia has announced that it is developing a specialized washing machine for astronauts to use in space. The announcement came from a missile, spaceship and space station manufacturer RKK. Normal washing machines require gravity to function, not to mention significant amounts of water that has to be stored somewhere and increases weight — they are not suitable for space missions (任务). This means that astronauts cannot wash their clothes and either have to pack enough for their whole trip or rely on costly resupply missions and throw used items into space. Crewmembers taking part in long-term missions on the International Space Station (ISS) often end up wearing the same garments for several continuous days and just change into new ones when they get dirty. Aside from this issue, wearing dirty clothes can be uncomfortable for the astronauts and could also provide perfect conditions for dangerous bacteria to grow and spread. RKK has previously outlined plans for a space washing machine in a Russian space industry journal paper published in 2017. In the paper, the authors estimated (估计) that 1,450 pounds of clothes are surprisingly transported to the ISS every year to cover the requirements of just three astronauts. And this quantity could increase to three tons for a two-year voyage to Mars involving six crewmembers and could increase the costs and complexity of a mission. The Russian scientists said that, instead of water, the washing machine would use the carbon dioxide produced by the astronauts’ breathing in the spaceship. Special technology would then turn the gas into a liquid under high pressure in order to clean the clothes. The Russian designs are not the first proposals for a space washing machine. NASA has previously made a model of a low-power, low-water washing device (设备) which was designed to work in the microgravity of low-Earth orbit or that of the moon or Mars. 12. Normal washing machines are not suitable in the spaceship mainly because __________. A. they lead to serious space pollution B. they make some bacteria spread C. they require gravity to function D. they increase the weight of the spaceship 13. What might be the biggest advantage of the specialized washing machine? A. Helping astronauts dry their clothes. B. Having a competition against NASA. C. Making the missions cheaper and easier. D. Getting astronauts to adapt to the environment. 14. Where can astronauts get the liquid for washing clothes in the spaceship? A. From the water tank in the spaceship. B. From the outer space. C. From the recycling water in the spaceship. D. From the gas carbon dioxide. 15. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Russia is developing a space washing machine. B. A space washing machine has been used in Russia. C. NASA’s made a model of a space washing machine. D. RKK transports tons of clothes to astronauts in space. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中 有两项为多余选项。 What Can We See in a Logo? We see hundreds of logos on signs, vehicles, websites, and even on the clothes we wear. All of these logos are designed to attract our attention.___16___However, a recent research supports the idea that remembering what a logo looks like is a very difficult task. Researchers gave 85 students a simple assignment to draw the logo of a well-known company from memory. Surprisingly, only one student in the study could accurately draw the logo from memory.___17___Researchers have developed a theory that they think might help to explain this blind spot in our memories. Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize with a quick glance. Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them. This process is known as “attention saturation(注意力饱和)”.___18___ Even though the brain is accustomed to ignoring unnecessary details, it is programmed for recognition. When we see images such as logos over and over again, we become familiar with them. This constant exposure leads to something scientists refer to as “gist memory”, which means that our brains remember the basic idea without all of the details.___19___. In fact, familiarity with a popular logo can even make people feel more comfortable about purchasing or using certain products. Logos are everywhere we look today. A fancy design or a thoughtful color combination may be a good start for a logo concept, but there are other factors to consider.___20___A clever design may be interesting, but most people will forget the details—especially if our brains have nothing to say about it. A. This may be inspiring to logo designers. B. People will know the product behind the logo. C. This general sense of memory has its own benefits. D. So why is it so difficult for people to recall the details of images? E. They also help us remember a product or service connected to the images. F. Our brains actually signal us to ignore information we don’t think we will need to remember. G. Logo designers need to know that people will only remember what they believe is worthwhile. 第三部分:基础知识运用 第一节:阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Evelyn Glennie was the first lady of solo percussion in Scotland. 11. 【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize with a quick glance Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them. 【答案】16.
