The night sky is our earliest library. There, we stored our knowledge, and passed it down around the fire, before we invented the written word.
I remember going to the local university for an astronomy(天文学) night when I was a child. That night, I saw Saturn, one of the planets, and its rings with my own eyes for the first time. The rings shone bright against the blackness of space and suddenly the universe(宇宙) wasn’t something that you only read about or imagined in your head. It was right there, and you were a part of it. That moment is priceless.

While starlight is good, light pollution here on Earth can be a real problem. For the past 200 years or so, we have used too much electricity(电) to make the night brighter. However, brighter doesn’t usually mean better, especially when a lot of that light shines up into the sky where no one needs it.

Luckily, some cities have taken action, like setting up new downward-directing lights along the streets. I hope that more cities will join in and continue the practice of controlling unnecessary lighting, so that more of us can watch the night sky in a way humans have done for thousands of years.

You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.”. It’s almost 6,400 kilometres long. As the world’s third-longest river, it covers about one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Belt covers eleven provinces and cities, making up over 40 per cent of China’s total population and GDP.
On December 26, 2020, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which came into force on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.

The mother river is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the Chinese paddlefish in the river have died out there. There’s also deserted land and soil pollution near the river.
According to the law, fishing will not be allowed in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流) and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined(罚款).

Digging sand will be strictly limited(限制) in the river. Many companies are digging sand along the river. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to decline.
Companies and factories along the river will need to focus on green development. If their activities do harm to the waterways, they will be moved away.

How to be a greener person
It’s our duty to protect the environment around us. Too much waste is a big problem, so we should live a low-carbon life.
First, we can go to school by bike or by bus. Second, we should save water. We can save energy by turning off the lights when we leave a room. We should use both sides of the paper and separate the garbage. Third, we can recycle many things, such as glass, plastic and waste paper. I will take the cloth bags to the supermarket when shopping. And we mustn’t drop litter in public places.
I hope everyone will be aware of this problem, so that everyone will work together. So it’s time for action. Let’s work together to make the Earth more and more beautiful.
