Have you seen the clay soldiers (士兵) in Xi’an’s terracotta museum? Do you know the true colors of them?
More than 2,000 years ago, Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, ordered people to build the Terracotta Army. He hoped that the army would guard him after he died.
In 1974, some farmers found several clay soldiers by accident in Xi’an. After that, about 8,000 more were found by archeologists (考古学家). Today, the clay soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are light brown. But they weren’t always this color. When they were made, they had the colors of white, green, blue, red, purple and yellow. Sadly, most of the colors disappeared today.
An area with more than a hundred clay soldiers was discovered by archeologists a few years ago. Many of them still had black hair, pink faces and black or brown eyes when they were found. If they were not protected well, their colors would disappear, too. After a clay soldier was found, archeologists used two steps to keep its color. First, they sprayed (喷) a special “water” on it. Then, they covered it in plastic.
Archeologists are facing a new challenge now. They are going to find a way to put the colors onto the clay soldiers again. If they succeed in doing it, people will be able to see what the clay soldiers originally (最初) looked like. It must be very amazing.

“Just because you can’t see something, that doesn’t mean it’s not there.” This old saying is quite meaningful for British sculptor (雕刻家) Willard. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the head of a pin. You can see them clearly only through a microscope (显微镜).
Many people want to own his art pieces. He’s been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievements. At every one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. How does he do it?
The answer is very, very carefully. So carefully, in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths. Willard usually works under a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works, he uses the hair from a fly as a paintbrush.
Creating theme detailed works is a very long and difficult process, and it isn’t always enjoyable. “It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish,” he says. A single item can take at least several weeks to complete.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort and took time. His interest in creating small things began when he was five. He started creating houses and playgrounds for ants.Willard was not a strong student. He had difficulty in reading and spelling words. Some kids used to call him a loser. This made him feel small, so focusing on little things helped him to feel big. A newspaper reporter said, “Willard has shown the world that he is special. Though his works are small, he is great.”

Tea and coffee are two of the most popular drinks in the world. However, people usually like one over the other. These drinks also have very different uses.
Tea drinking started in China over 4,000 years ago. Tea is made from leaves. These days, some people drink tea for health, using it to help with stress or losing weight. However, most people in tea-drinking countries think of tea as more than just a healthy drink. In Turkey (土耳其), tea is always there when people meet. Whether in someone’s home or a company, tea is always offered as a way of welcoming. In the UK, homes and offices usually have tea time. Tea and other dishes are served at tea time in the afternoon. It is a way of relaxing with friends or co-workers (同事).
Coffee came much later than tea, just over 1,000 years ago. Coffee is made from beans. Something in the coffee beans makes a person feel active. Most people do not drink coffee to relax. Instead, they drink coffee to get going. Many people drink coffee in the morning to help them wake up. Others will also drink coffee during short breaks in the afternoon to keep going through the working day. Some people may visit coffee shops just to meet and talk with friends. However, many people in coffee shops drink coffee while working on their computers.

I’m very proud of my hometown. In the winter of 2023, its ice and snow culture attracted tourists from all over the world. Everyone who came here praised its beauty. The Ice and Snow World showed the unique charm of Harbin ice and snow culture and tourism to the world.
