10 January, a wedding ceremony, India
When Nadim invited me to his sister’s wedding, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime. I was definitely not wrong!
The wedding ceremony took place in a brightly decorated hotel room. There were hundreds of guests, all dressed up in formal, colourful clothes. According to tradition, the bride was wearing an eye-catching red silk sari.
I did not understand all of the traditional customs, but a few made a deep impression on me. One was the bridegroom’s entrance on a beautiful white horse. I had never seen that back home! Another was the part when Nadim’s father proudly led his daughter through the rows of seats to her husband. It reminded me of my sister’s wedding. Although our cultures are so different, the smiling faces are the same.
The customs that followed were anything but ordinary. The couple joined hands and walked around a small fire four times. Then they took seven steps together by the fire, and with each step made a different promise about how they were going to support each other and live together happily. It was very romantic!
After ceremony, it was time for the celebrations. That is a story for another day, but let’s just say there was a lot of dancing. Now I know I have two left feet... and both of them hurt!

Last July, I visited Cambridge, a historical university town in England. It is well known that Cambridge University is one of the best universities in the world, but few people know its unique university system. The trip made me know more about the school. It turned out so different from what I had expected!
At Cambridge, there are 31 colleges. These colleges are places where students live, enjoy entertainment, study at libraries and use leisure equipment. Once you enter a college, it becomes your community. Each college is different in terms of places, equipment and atmosphere (氛围). This is why, when applying to Cambridge, applicants (申请人) take great care to choose the right college for themselves. Sometimes, it is just a matter of whether it “feels right” for you.
I also had the chance to visit their Museum of Classical Archaeology (考古学). For someone who is crazy about classics (经典), Cambridge is the perfect place to come and learn from their museums. Classics have been interesting me since I was a kid, and I have developed a deep love for Greek mythology (神话) in comic books. In most museums that Cambridge has, it is easy to find exhibits (展品) that enable you to gain knowledge in any area of interest. There is a museum for almost everything you can think of, including earth sciences, art and — of course — classics.
If you ever have the chance to visit Cambridge, I would suggest visiting their museums as part of your trip. Not only would you be able to immerse yourself in the studying atmosphere, but you could enjoy the wonderful exhibits each museum offers.
8. How did the writer learn more about Cambridge University according to the passage?
A. By reading books. B. By visiting it.
C. By watching TV. D. By surfing the Internet.
9. Why should applicants be careful about choosing the right college?
A. Students have different interests. B. Not all colleges are open to them.
C. The colleges are similar to each other. D. Each college is different in its own way.
10. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The writer’s deep interest in classics.
B. The great advantages of visiting Cambridge’s museums.
C. The large collection of exhibits in Cambridge’s museums.
D. The writer’s visit to the Museum of Classical Archaeology.
11. Which of the following words can be used to replace the underlined word “immerse” in the last paragraph?
A. Put. B. Teach. C. Value. D. Dress.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. A

If she was to buy a nice gift for her husband Jim. she would need more money. But how could she earn some? Della stood in front of the mirror in her apartment, She looked at her reflection, brushed her long, brown hair, and made up her mind: she was going to sell her hair. With the money she received for it, she would buy Jim a perfect gift.
Della had her hair cut off and sold it for twenty dollars. She spent the next two hours hunting for Jim’s gift. She found it at last: a simple but beautiful watch chain for his gold watch, which had been passed down to him from his grandfather. 【答案】 Did she look like a little schoolboy without her beautiful long hair? Would Jim still think she was pretty? She was about to find out. As she entered the room, Jim’s eyes widened in surprise, but instead of commenting on her new look, which she had transformed into a schoolboy-like appearance, he pulled her into a tight embrace, his words echoing. “Della, you remain the most beautiful person to me, both externally and internally.” His heartfelt reassurance, like a warm blanket, instantly dispelled her lingering nervousness.
And the next day would be Christmas. As they exchanged gifts that Christmas Eve, Della presented Jim with the watch chain, her eyes shining with love and gratitude. And as Jim fastened the chain to his cherished gold watch, he whispered softly, “No gift could ever compare to the gift of your love, Della. You are my greatest treasure.” In that simple exchange, they found that the true essence of Christmas lay not in the value of presents, but in the depth of their affection for each other. And as they celebrated the holiday together, surrounded by love and warmth, Della knew that she was the richest woman in the world, regardless of the contents of her purse.

A The writer’s deep interest in classics.
A. Put. B. Teach. C. Value. D. Dress.
D
