Notes to the text
When we look at a pine cone, we might think how much it looks like the tiles on a roof. An open flower might make us think how closely it resembles an umbrella. It is natural to think in this way, but of course it wasn't the umbrella that inspired the flower or the roof that inspired the pine cone.
Paraphrase: People naturally think that a pine cone looks like the tiles on a roof and that an open flower is similar to an umbrella, but in fact inspiration for the umbrella came from a flower and inspiration for the roof from a pine cone.
“how much it looks like the tiles on a roof”为宾语从句;
“It is natural to think in this way”为“It is+adj.+to do sth.”句型,其中 It作形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式短语;
It is fantastic to work as a volunteer.( 作为一名志愿者工作真是太棒了。)
“it wasn't the umbrella that inspired the flower or the roof that inspired the pine cone.”是强调句型“It is/was+被强调的部分+that+其他部分”的否定形式,强调 the umbrella 和 the roof。
It was not what you say but what you do that really counts.(真正重要的不是你说了什么,而是你做了什么。)
Notes to the text
Today, architects continue to explore ways to capture the beauty of natural forms, to mimic the way nature works or even to make natural organisms part of a building.
Paraphrase: Today, architects continue to explore ways in which they absorb the beauty of natural forms, imitate how nature works or even use natural organisms in buildings.
本句中三个to do 作后置定语修饰 ways。way to do也可以转换为way of doing结构。例如: The best way to see/ of seeing the paintings is to start from the top floor and walk down to the bottom.(看画展最好的方式是从顶层看起,一直往下走看到底层。)
此外,本句中含有一个定语从句 nature works,先行词 way后面省略了关系词that或者in which.
Notes to the text
The insects built mounds covered in little holes designed to allow air to move freely in and out of the mounds.
Paraphrase: The termites built mounds covered in little holes which were designed to make air move in and out of the mounds.
本句中有两个过去分词短语作后置定语,分别是covered in little holes 作 mounds的后置定语, designed to...作holes的后置定语。过去分词短语作定语通常后置, 在句法上相当于定语从句。例如: Paper cuttings used for religious purposes are often found in temples. = Paper cuttings which /that are used for religious purposes are often found in temples.(用于宗教目的的剪纸常常可以在寺庙里见到。)
Notes to the text
The building therefore not only responds to its environment and uses less energy, but also reduces damage to the environment by generating its own renewable energy.
Paraphrase: Therefore, the building uses less energy, as well as responds to the environment. In addition, it can generate renewable energy, which is less damaging to the environment.
本句中含有并列连词not only… but also…, 表示并列或递进关系, 意为“不但……而且……”。not only… but also…与as well as所连接的并列成分各有侧重, not only… but also…是把重点放在后者, as well as是把重点放在前者, 因此在转换时一定要调整顺序。例如: Not only the teacher but also the students wish for a holiday.=The students as well as the teacher wish for a holiday.(不仅老师希望放假, 学生也希望放假。)
