My name’s Ella, and I’m 22. Last year I went to Thailand and stayed there for two weeks with my sister Josie. We went to help as part of a group of volunteers at an elephant sanctuary(大象保护区)—a place where people can look after and save the sick elephants.
One of our main jobs at the sanctuary was to collect the elephants’food. Elephants eat plenty of grass and banana plants, so collecting their food took most of the day. After that, we also helped wash the elephants in the river using big brushes and soap. I found that so much fun, even if I got wetter than the elephants did! The part of the day I most looked forward to was the evening. By the light of the moon, we led the elephants on foot into the forest area where they spent the night.
All the volunteers stayed in the same house. The meals were delicious and included meat and fish, which both of us liked best. After dinner, all the volunteers spent the evening talking, singing and dancing.
Now we’re back in the UK. Josie doesn’t often talk about Thailand. I think her heart is full of sorrow that she didn’t make good use of her time there because she was missing her friends too much. But when she looks back, she can see how lucky she was to go there. Maybe she’ll go back one day—I certainly will!

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate the new year at midnight on Dec.31st or Jan.1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal(正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne at midnight. During the first minute of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness. But some cultures prefer to celebrate it by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and that the new year can start afresh(重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. The full moon, full feelings
Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying moon cakes for centuries. Moon cakes are in the shape of a full moon on the Mid-Autumn night. They carry people’s wishes to the families they love and miss.
There are many traditional folk stories about this festival. However, most people think that the story of Chang’e is the most touching. Chang’e was Hou Yi’s beautiful wife. After Hou Yi shot down the nine suns, a goddess(女神) gave him magic medicine to thank him. Whoever took this could live forever, and Hou Yi planned to take it with Chang’e. However, a bad man, Pang Meng, tried to steal the medicine when Hou Yi was not at home. Chang’e refused to give it to him and took it all. She became very light and flew up to the moon. Hou Yi was so sad that he called out her name to the moon every night. One night, he found that the moon was so bright and round that he could see his wife there. He quickly laid out her favourite fruits and desserts(甜品) in the garden. How he wished that Chang’e could come back!
After this, people started the tradition of admiring the moon and sharing moon cakes with their families.
