J. K. Rowling is a British author of the Harry Potter series of books. She composed much of her first work, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone in a poor situation, often planning out her chapters in cafes near her small apartment in Edinburgh.
Previous to Rowling penning the Harry Potter books, her life was full of struggle and loss. Her mother died in 1990 because of a disease. Her first marriage, to Jorje Arrantes in 1992, ended just over a year later. Unable to find work, Rowling struggled to support herself and her daughter on State Aid assistance. Her financial circumstances would not change until the late 1990s, when the Harry Potter series went beyond all expectations for success. Aided by the Scottish Arts Council, Rowling was able to complete her first novel, but initial encouragement from publishers was actually non-existent. She was told to find a day job, and the UK publisher, Bloomsbury, firstly published only 1000 copies of the novel, titled in the UK as Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone.
Within a half year of its publication in 1997, the novel achieved its first award, the Nestle Smarties Book Prize. A few months, later, it received the British Book Award for Best Children’s Book of The Year. By 1998, Scholastic purchased publication rights, and Rowling, now on her third part of the series, was enjoying great success.
The popularity of the series has made Rowling the most popular children’s author ever. The interest in the books from both adults and children aroused the enthusiastic reading among younger children eager for the next part of Harry’s adventures.
Queen Elizabeth II honored Rowling in 2000, titling her as an Officer of the British Empire. She remarried in 2001, to Dr. Neil Murray, with whom she has two children, David and Mackenzie. In her public life, she devotes time to causes dear to her, including relieving world poverty, and funding research towards medicine.

A. By finding a day job. B. By writing some stories.
C. By receiving government support. D. By working for cafes near her house.
5. Who contributed a lot to Rowling’s first novel?

Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings(幼苗)aboard the Tiangong space station and this experiment may offer key insights into how astronauts can grow food to support long—term space missions, experts said on Monday. This experiment is the first to produce the complete life cycle of the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a mature plant producing new seeds.
The breakthrough was conducted in the Wentian space laboratory, which was launched into orbit on July 24, 2022. Three astronauts were conducting the experiment smoothly and testing the plants according to the plan.
“The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher of the task, adding that the experiment also contained seedlings of a small flowering plant often used by scientists to study mutations(变异). “The astronauts will keep monitoring the plants, and if it is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies,” she noted
The flowering stage is crucial for plant reproductive development. “We want to investigate how microgravity can affect the plant flowering time and whether it is possible to use the microgravity environment to control the related process,” she said.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds of rice and other crops to space to help them mutate and produce higher yields once they were planted on Earth. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the tough conditions of space such as microgravity and lack of air.
Rice has been a main food for astronauts since the early days of space exploration. Freeze—dried chicken and rice was the menu for the Apollo 11 mission, which carried the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969.
“But if we want to land on and explore Mars, bringing food from Earth is not enough to provide for the astronauts’ long journey and mission in space. We have to find a food source for long term space explorations,” Zheng added.
8. What’s the significance of Chinese recent space rice experiment?
A. It enables human beings to move to another planet.
B. It helps people get a better idea of the human life cycle.
C. It inspires more other countries to do space explorations
D. It makes it possible to carry out long—term space missions
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The mutation. B. The experiment. C. The exploration. D. The space mission.
10. Why have crop seeds been brought to space since the last century?
A. To promote genetic changes and increase crop harvest.
B. To figure out how to create an earth—like environment.
C. To study the impact of microgravity on crop growth.
D. To develop new crop species with strong ability to adapt.
11. Where is the text most probably from?
A. A medical report. B. A fashion magazine.
C. A science newspaper. D. A history book.

Beijing’s Forbidden City is a place full of wonder. From its thousands of rooms to its many beautiful artifacts, there’s no wonder it’s one of China’s most popular tourist destinations.
But even more than 600 years after it was built, it’s still managing to serve up surprises. Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it’s estimated that the Forbidden City has survived more than 200 earthquakes. And while most structures aren’t made to survive natural disasters, let alone ones built hundreds of years ago, it seems that the Forbidden City was built to withstand anything.
A recent television documentary by UK broadcaster Channel 4 explored the skills of the ancient building’s designers. A group of Chinese carpenters and engineers were shown building a scale model (成比例模型) of one of the Forbidden City’s palaces, at one fifth of the size.
To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is, the model was put to the test. It was subjected to a simulated (模拟的) earthquake of 9.5 on the Richter scale — equivalent to the largest ever recorded quake — and survived. Instead of falling apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.
According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City’s strength, as well as other ancient Chinese structures’, lies in dougong — a centuries-old building method invented in China. This is the name for special brackets on buildings. Despite being held together without any nails or glue, the brackets are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets rough.
“Dougong design is an important earthquake-resistant feature of classical Chinese structures because the framework changes in shape when under pressure, much like the shock absorbers (减震器) of a car,” according to Chinese National Geography.
“Ancient Chinese craftsmen created structures that were both enduring and aesthetically (在美学方面) pleasing using dougong, revealing their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.”
The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and cultural significance, but perhaps it should add one more thing to its list of attractions: earthquake shelter.
12. What is the article mainly about?
A. What has made the Forbidden City a popular tourist destination.
B. What has helped the Forbidden City survive so many earthquakes.
C. The characteristics of Chinese architecture during the Ming Dynasty.
D. A variety of building methods used in ancient Chinese structures.
13. Which of the following can best replace the underlined phrase “was subjected to” in Paragraph 4?
A. Suffered. B. Was controlled by.
C. Obeyed. D. Was affected by.
14. What was the aim of the test in the UK documentary?
A. To reproduce a real earthquake from the Ming Dynasty.
B To discover a long-lost Chinese building method
C. To explain the impact of earthquakes on ancient buildings.
D. To prove the strength of ancient Chinese architecture.
15. What is “dougong” according to the text?
A. A paint that gives Chinese buildings an attractive look.
B. A tool used by ancient people to measure earth-quakes.
C. Special building parts that keep a traditional Chinese building together,
D. A building piece located in the center of a traditional Chinese house.

Every culture has a specific way of eating. North Americans and Europeans use forks, knives and spoons. In Asia, chopsticks are the top choice.
You might think it’s easy to use chopsticks, but actually it’s not as simple as it first appears. I learned this lesson a couple of years ago.
I had applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. My new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job. He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. I was nervous. I knew we would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique (技巧). I had failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression? Would they laugh at me? Would I make a complete fool of myself?
I went home that evening and cooked some rice and chicken. I put the food on my plate, and I spent the next hour attempting to learn how to use chopsticks. Try as I might, I could not hold the food with my chopsticks. I didn’t get much sleep that evening. I tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed, worrying about the coming lunch.
The next day, I could hardly contain my anxiety and headed to the restaurant. We were seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the waiter in Mandarin. My heart was beating wildly, but then I noticed a strange thing. Instead of the customary chopsticks, each of us had knives, forks and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with the chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment, so he had called ahead and arranged for us to be served with knives and forks. I couldn’t believe how thoughtful he was.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为100左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Immediately, I made up my mind to take this opportunity to learn how to use chopsticks.

J. K. Rowling is a British author of the Harry Potter series of books. She composed much of her first work Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone in a poor situation, often planning out her chapters in cafes near her small apartment in Edinburgh.
Queen Elizabeth II honored Rowling in 2000 titling her as an Officer of the British Empire. She remarried in 2001, to Dr. Neil Murray, with whom she has two children, David and Mackenzie. In her public life, she devotes time to causes dear to her, including relieving world poverty, and funding research towards medicine.

B. To discover a long-lost Chinese building method

【答案】范文
Immediately, I made up my mind to take this opportunity to learn how to use chopsticks. I asked the server to bring some chopsticks for me. When they arrived, I took them carefully in my hand. I looked up at my boss and we smiled at each other. As I grasped the chopsticks and took hold of a bit of rice and meat, trying to get them into my mouth, my fingers slipped and the food fell back to the plate. However, I didn’t give up, and eventually managed to eat my entire meal by using chopsticks. It felt like a great achievement to me. In the end, I wasn’t embarrassed at all. I’m glad that my new boss was so thoughtful a person that he could take everything into consideration.
