Making it to 100 years old is a big achievement on its own, but being active at that age is absolutely worthy of praise and admiration. Jayne Burns, who just turned 101 years old, still has a part-time job at a craft store in Ohio, drives herself to work, and simply doesn’t see herself retiring anytime soon. Not only does she seem to love keeping busy, but she credits it as one of her secrets to living a long life.
Burns first caught the internet’s attention on TikTok. There, her coworker Maggie HusVar told her followers about her then 98-year-old friend. Maggie then asked Burns to share a piece of advice with her new fans, to whom Burns said, “Keep moving.”
The senior woman recently celebrated her 101st birthday, and she certainly hasn’t changed her mind about slowing down. Burns took the job in 1997 after her husband died, and has expressed that she enjoys what she does, so she wants to keep doing it. “I’ll work for as long as I can or as long as they’ll have me,” she said.
In celebration of her milestone birthday, Burns recently shared some more tips for a long life. “I was always active all my life doing things. So I think that has helped more than anything.” As a cancer survivor, she said she used to watch her sugar intake, but she doesn’t anymore, as she loves sweets. Despite her age, she still follows a beauty routine. “I use a moisturizer(保湿霜) and makeup. I figured I did it all my life, so I’m ‘not’ going to stop now,” she says.
Overall, her top secret for a long life is to make friends and find happiness in the company of others. “It’s important to find people who are friendly and kind.” she says. “I enjoy talking to everybody I work with, and meeting the customers who are very nice, even if some of them are surprised to see me at the cutting table.”

When we’re facing an annoying problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm. We’re looking to get the best ideas as quickly as possible. I love seeing it happen — except for one tiny wrinkle. Group brainstorming usually backfires.
In brainstorming meetings, many good ideas are lost — and few are gained. Extensive evidence shows that when we generate ideas together, we fail to maximize collective intelligence. Brainstorming groups fall so far short of their potential that we get more ideas — and better ideas — if we all work alone. As the humorist Dave Barry joked, “If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings’.”
To unearth the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, we’re better off shifting to a process called “brainwriting”. The initial steps are solo. Start by asking everyone to generate ideas separately and then share them unnamed among the group. To preserve independent judgment, each member evaluates them on their own. Only then does the team come together to select and improve the most promising options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing them, teams can appear and advance possibilities that might not get attention otherwise.
For instance, Dow Chemical invited people to enter an innovation tournament to save energy and reduce waste. They invited any proposals that cost no more than $200, 000 and had the potential to pay for themselves within a year — and invested in the most promising ones. Over the next decade, they bet on 575 ideas that saved the company an average of $110 million per year.
Research by organizational behavior scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why this method works. They find that a key to collective intelligence is balanced participation. In brainstorming meetings, it’s too easy for participation to become lopsided (倾向一方的) in favor of the biggest egos (自我价值感), the loudest voices, and the most powerful people. The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into the conversation. The goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room — it’s to make the room smarter.
5. Which is the closest in meaning to “backfire” in Paragraph 1?
A. shoot from behind the back B. make a fire in the backyard
C. produce an unexpected result D. achieve what was planned
6. What prevents brainstorming sessions from maximizing collective intelligence?
A. Limited time for discussion. B. Lack of diverse perspectives.
C. Difficulty in reaching agreement. D. Overemphasis on individual ideas.
7. Why does brainwriting involve initial solo steps?
A. To encourage independent ideas. B. To speed up the idea generation process.
C To give more attention to promising ideas. D. To increase the influence of powerful individuals.
8. What is the main purpose of the example of Dow Chemical?
A. To prove the effectiveness of brainwriting.
B. To illustrate the principle behind brainwriting.
C. To emphasize the value of traditional brainstorming.
D. To make a comparison between brainstorming and brainwriting.

Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. Now, there is a new way we get the news: computer-created news readers.
Recently, China’s Xinhua launched(推出)the world’s first AI news presenters with the Chinese search engine Sogou. The news readers created by machine learning technology are based on two real-life newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English; the other, in Mandarin Chinese.
Machine learning is used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen, which look and sound like real people. Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China’s latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis. But several experts suggested that the term Al does not correctly describe abilities of the robotic news readers.
On social media, many Chinese noted that the AI presenters did not seem real. People blamed them for not being more lifelike. Others wondered about the effects robots might have on employment and workers. Some people argued that only low-level jobs requiring heavy labor will be easily replaced by robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low-cost labor machines.
Some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations. Britain’s BBC recently released a video that used machine learning to make it look like one of its news readers speaking different languages. The London-based company that developed the system says its goal is to “remove the language barrier” for many different kinds of video across the Internet.
9. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A. Introduce the topic of the text. B. Summarize the different opinions.
C. Add some data about the AI presenters. D. Compare different ways of getting news.
10. What is the machine learning technology used to do?
A. To bring newscasts up to date every hour.
B. To help AI presenters speak more fluently.
C. To keep AI presenters from making any mistakes.
D. To ensure images and sounds are like those of real persons.
11. What are some people worried about when AI presenters were launched?
A. Robots will rule over the world in the end.
B. Robots will eventually replace human all over.
C. Robots may endanger most people’s health.
D. Robots may threaten some people’s employment.
12. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. BBC has done similar experiments as Xinhua does.
B. BBC has removed the language barrier in newscasts.
C. BBC shows interest in Xinhua’s AI news presenters.
D. BBC’s news readers can explore different technologies.

Manage your Sunday well.

Don’t forget to relax.
____16____ It’s important to make space for relaxing activities to ground yourself. Maybe a body scan meditation (冥想) a midafternoon shower or bath, an engaging movie or show. “I was really horrible, wasn’t I?” asked Jackson. “I need to apologize to Mrs Herring. She’s done a lot for me.”
“Well, then, I have an idea,” Mr Herring said.
A few days after this, Mrs Herring returned home from the hospital to find her house decorated with balloons. And there were also flowers on the living room table, where a beautiful cake awaited her. “Happy birthday, honey, and welcome back home,” Mr Herring, said as he led her inside. On her 60th birthday, all the family members wished Mrs Herring, but her sad eyes were searching for Jackson everywhere.

【答案】Dear students,
On behalf of the Student Union, I’m writing to extend my warm welcome to you and introduce some traditional Chinese cuisine at our dining hall for the upcoming International High School Basketball Open Tournament.
As part of your visit, I would recommend “Dumplings” at our canteen, which are loved by people of all ages. These little pockets of joy are made by wrapping fillings such as chopped meat or vegetables in thin dough wrappers and then steaming or frying them. By enjoying dumplings, not only will you satisfy your taste buds but you can also get a glimpse into the diversity and unity of Chinese culture.
We hope that you have a wonderful time during the basketball tournament and enjoy the delicious flavors of our Chinese cuisine.
The Student Union

【答案】One possible version:
On the doorstep stood Jackson with a huge bouquet (花束) of red roses in his hands. He walked up to Mrs Herring, hugged her, and said, “Happy birthday. Mommy! Were you planning on cutting the cake without me?” Mrs Herring was surprised to hear Jackson call her Mommy. She cried so much that even Jackson couldn’t keep his tears. Jackson said, “I’m sorry for what I have done. Mommy.” Mrs Herring said she had forgiven him on hearing him call her Mommy, which she had been waiting for a long time.
Then Mrs Herring asked Jackson to blow out the candles together. Mrs Herring cut the cake and gave the biggest piece to Jackson. With the piece of cake in hands, Jackson said. “This is my family, and I will treasure every moment we share.” That day, the Herrings and Jackson cried, laughed. and had a lot of cake together. Mrs Herring’s 60th birthday turned out to be the best one, and she was “gifted” with a loving son.
