Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share. First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control some things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live their life “on purpose” — they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. Because of their commitment (投身;献身), people are willing to do business with them, and it is always found in them. To live their life on purpose successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Instead of seeing it negatively or depressingly, they use the knowledge to spur (激励) themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately. 1. By living life “on purpose”, successful people do the following things except ______. A. stick to their goals all the time B. concentrate on their jobs C. do business with many people D. control other people’s thoughts 2. The underlined word “it’’ in the second paragraph refers to ______. A. the commitment with successful people B. the job that successful people do C. the main concern of successful people D. the business successful people do 3. What might be the suitable title for the passage? A. How Successful People Do Business. B. How People Live Their Life on Purpose. C. How Can People Be Successful? D. How Can People Do Their Own Things? B I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格)of directions every time I ask “ How can I get to the post office?” Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑的)in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “ Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.” In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “ Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile. People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance in time, not miles. “ How far away is the post office?” you ask. “ Oh,” they answer, “ it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “ Yes, but how many miles is it?” They don’t know. It’s true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “ Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “ I don't know”. People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan! 4. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually _______ . A. describe the place carefully B. show him a map of the place C. tell him the names of the streets D. refer to recognizable buildings and places 5. What is the place where people measure distance in time? A. New York. B. Los Angles. C. Kansas C. Iowa 6. People inYucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________ . A. in order to save time B. as a test C. so as to be polite D. for fun 7. What can we infer from the text? A. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences. B. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly. C. People have similar understanding of politeness. D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors. C We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be, mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light. Blue light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So, do the glasses work? “Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage, ” Dr. Rahul Khurana, a clinical spokesman, told Business Insider. Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain (眼疲劳). More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So, if eyestrain is the real issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use. 8. What do we know about blue light? A. It has the shortest wavelength. B. It’s a kind of nuclear radiation. C. It consumes a great deal of energy. D. It may come from electronic devices. 9. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses? A. Evidence of their benefits to eyes. B. Widespread use of smart devices. C. Belief in blue light’s harmful effect. D. Scientific understanding of blue light. 10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A Rubbing eyes makes people strained. B. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable. C. Blue light may connect with tired eyes. D. Eye problems are not easy to deal with. 11. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be______. A. useless B. harmful C. tiring D. beneficial D Some years ago, a 28yearold Californian wife and mother of three children died from drinking too much water. Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a waterdrinking contest that was held by a local radio show. Called “Hold Your Wee For A Wii”, the contest organizers promised a free Wii video game machine to those who drank the most water without going to the bathroom. The woman who died drank about 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other participants complained of discomfort and showed signs of pains, they were laughed at by the organizers. This tragic news story shows the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health. Consuming more water than you need can increase your total blood volume (容量). And since your blood volume exists within a closed system, increasing your blood volume puts unnecessary stress on your heart and blood vessels (血管). Your kidneys (肾) must work overtime to get rid of extra water out of your system. Your kidneys are not a pair of pipes. Flushing more water through your kidneys doesn't necessarily help it become cleaner. Rather, your kidneys can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time. And drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of kidney damage. Putting unnecessary stress on your system and your kidneys by consuming unnecessary water is an unnoticeable process. For the average person, it is usually impossible to know that this stress exists, as there are usually no obvious symptoms on a momenttomoment basis. But make no mistake about it: this stress is real and can hurt your health over the long term. 12. Why is the Californian woman mentioned? A. To lead to the topic of the text. B. To tell us a tragic news story about a mother. C. To tell us it can be dangerous to take part in contests. D. To tell us how much water we can drink at most one time. 13. When the participants showed signs of pains, the organizers ________. A. became very concerned B. were laughed at by others C. tried to reduce their pains D. didn't pay much attention to them 14. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. How water is consumed in our body. B. The importance of water to our health. C. Why drinking too much water is dangerous. D. The function of kidneys in consuming water.。 15. The stress caused by consuming unnecessary water ________. A. isn't that dangerous B. can never be found out C. is really harmful in the long run D. leads to some obvious symptoms 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Maybe you are an average student. ___16___ However, Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. The underlined word “it’’ in the second paragraph refers to ______. What might be the suitable title for the passage? A. How Successful People Do Business. B. How People Live Their Life on Purpose. C. How Can People Be Successful? D. How Can People Do Their Own Things? 【答案】1. D 2. A 3. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了使人成功的因素和成功人士身上的特点。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“They understand that they cannot control some things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions.(他们明白他们不能控制生活中一些事情,比如自然、过去和其他人。但同时,他们也很清楚,他们可以控制自己的思想和行为)”可知,通过“有目标地”生活,成功人士是控制自己的想法,而非别人的想法。所以D选择项不包括在内。故选D。 【2题详解】 词句猜测题。根据前文“Because of their commitment , people are willing to do business with them(因为他们的承诺,人们愿意与他们做生意)”可知,这种承诺总是存在于他们身上。这里的it指的是上文“成功人士的承诺”。故选A。 【3题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Do you know what elements make people successful? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.(你知道是什么因素使人成功吗?采访和调查表明,成功人士有几个共同的成功秘诀)”及全文可知,本文介绍了使人成功的因素和成功人士身上的特点。所以“How Can People Be Successful?(人们怎样才能成功?)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选C。 B I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格)of directions every time I ask “ How can I get to the post office?” Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑的)in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “ Go straight down to the corner. A. Rubbing eyes makes people strained. B. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable. C. Blue light may connect with tired eyes. D. Eye problems are not easy to deal with. 11. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be______. A. useless B. harmful C. tiring D. beneficial 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11.
