Many years ago, many zoos kept all kinds of animals in small cages(笼子). Small cages made it easy for people to see the animals, but a small cage is not a good place for an animal to live in.
Today zoos keep animals in different kinds of cages. The cages are very big and open. They usually have plants and a little lake. The cages look like the animals’ habitats.
Zoos help to protect all kinds of animals. They protect animals in the zoo and they protect animals in the wild. How do they do this? Zoos teach people how animals live in the wild. Zoos want people to help protect the animals’ wild habitats.
Many plants and animals are going extinct. Mammoths, which are related(有关联的) to Asia elephants, are now extinct. There are no mammoths in the world today. Scientists say that seventy-four different kinds of living things go extinct every day!

Sleep is a physical and mental(精神的) need. We all need to sleep, though the sleep hours are different from person to person. Doctors do not know why we need sleep, but they all agree that sleep is very important to us. Without enough sleep, the body may be weak.
One-third of adults have insomnia(失眠症). There are over 80 kinds of sleep-related disorders(失调). However, other adults are lucky and have no sleeping problems. They sleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows. Do you sleep well? If you have insomnia, here are a few suggestions.
1. Make a timetable, and stick to it.
We need to sleep at regular times. If your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day or on weekends, your sleep rhythms(节奏) aren’t predicted and the body doesn’t know how to act. So it’s important to have a regular wake-up time, even on weekends, vacations or after a night of poor sleep.
2. Don’t lie in bed awake.
“The best sleep tip you can give somebody is to get up—don’t lie in bed awake,” Grandner said. “Whether it’s the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset(调整). Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don’t spend that time awake in bed.”
3. Change your thinking about sleep.
“Many people regard sleeping as the final thing they have to do for daily activities. They would like to work or watch TV very late rather than sleep on time. That thinking needs to be changed,” Grandner said.
“Don’t see your sleep as the time you have left in your day,” he advised. “See your sleep as the time you need in order to prepare yourself for an energetic(精力充沛的) tomorrow.”
“It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it’s an important one,” Grandner added.

Why should we protect wild animals?
My favourite animal is the panda. Pandas are white and black. They like climbing trees and walking in the forests. They feed on bamboo. They are very cute and lovely.
But their situation is not very good. For one thing, pandas don’t have many babies and baby pandas often die. For another, pandas eat bamboo, but the bamboo forests are getting smaller.
To protect animals is to protect ourselves. So we should create a better life for pandas. We can set up nature parks with lots of bamboo so that pandas can have enough food to eat. It is also a good idea to raise money for them.
