After my mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病), the plants in our house began to die. In years past, I remember the deep, earths smell that would rise up in our house after my mother had made her weekly watering rounds. Back then, I never connected it with the care taking that was at the foundation (基础) of everything she did.
But now, leaves were dropping, some dry and edged with brown, and many of the stems bare (光秃秃的). It was a mark of how my mother is no longer able to care for all the things to which she lovingly attended. I had been so focused on the increasing demands (要求) of her own care that her beloved plants had escaped my notice.
I began her old rounds, pouring water into the thirsty soil (土壤), and soon they thrived. That’s the thing about house plants: They demand nothing. They wait quietly, no matter how thirsty they are.
But even after my best attempts some of the plants could not be revived (复活). My mother’s kind caregivers have since brought new ones to add to her collection, and my father buys fresh flowers every week at the fruit and vegetable market.
Even as Alzheimer’s steals so much of her moment-to-moment memory, her desire to care is still there. I would guide her down the steps to water one of the plants herself with her little white watering can. I watched as her trembling (颤抖的) hands plucked (摘) the leaves that had turned brown. Each time, she smiled up at me with deep satisfaction because being able to care for something is still what brings her the greatest joy.
I look at plants differently these days. I see them as my mother does: quiet reminders of the need for kindness toward all living things. It is clear to me that the things we spend a lifetime cultivating (培养) are never truly lost; the love she has planted in me still blooms.
29. Why did the plants in the author’s house begin to dip?
A. They were attacked by a disease. B. The author paid no attention to them.
C. The author’s mom didn’t like them any more. D. The author was not good at caring for them.
30. How did the author revive the dying plants?
A. By watering them regularly. B. By plucking the brown leaves.
C. By moving them out of the house. D. By asking a gardener for help.
31. What brings the greatest joy to the author’s mother?
A. Memories of the past. B. Her caregivers’ help.
C. Showing her kindness and care. D. New plants bought by her husband.
32. What message does the author want to convey with the article?
A. We should always care for our family. B. Alzheimer’s has a huge impact on people.
C. Plants can bring us satisfaction. D. Small acts of kindness are powerful.

The pirates (海盗) did not return. After lunch, the doctor took his pistol (手枪) and sword. He put the map in his pocket and left. He wanted to find Ben Gunn.
It was very bat and unpleasant inside the fort. I had a plan and I needed to leave the foal. I took two pistols and left quickly when Gray and the square were with the captain.
First I ran down to the white rocks and looked for Ben Gunn’s boat. I soon found it under bushes. It was a simple boat, made out of branches and goat skins, and it was very light to carry.
I decided to wait until it was dark and row to the Hispaniola. I wanted to cut the ship adrift (漂流), leaving it to float with the currents (洋流). As I waited, I could see the pirates fire burning, and out on the watch the lights on the ship.
As soon as it was dark, I got into the boat and rowed out to the Hispaniola. I found the rope that connected the ship to the anchor (锚) and cut through it with my knife until the ship was free. As I did this, I could hear the angry voices of Israel Hands and another mutineer (叛变者) in a cabin above me.
The ship began to move away in the night air. By then I was so tired that I fell asleep and dreamed of home and the admirel Benbow.
When I awoke, I found myself at the south-west end of Treasure Island. I was only about 300 metres from the shore. When I lay quietly in the bottom of the boat, it moved perfectly over the watch.
But as soon as I sat up, the boat went out of control. So I lay down, and used the paddle from that position. I moved slowly closer to the land, but the current was strong and the boat moved past the bay (海湾).
I moved slowly to the next bay, and suddenly I saw the Hispaniola in front of me. The wind and the currents were moving the ship. I couldn’t see anyone on it. As soon as I was close enough, I held a rope and climbed on board. Just in time, as my little boat hit against the side of the ship and it sank under the water. I climbed to safety on the deck, realizing that my only way of escaping—my little boat—was lost.

A new font(字体) designed by a Finnish software company could make your writing more polite and hopefully reduce cyberbullying(网络暴力).
Polite Type, developed by TietoEVRY, replaces harmful language with nicer words as you type. For example, if you type “you are ugly”, it will be replaced with “you are not traditionally beautiful”.
“We want bullies(欺凌者) to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said company manager Kia Haring.
The problem of cyberbullying has been around since the internet was invented. Nearly everyone who has used the internet has experienced it, or at least seen it in action.
Polite Type is a good step in the right direction. But how do we really deal with cyberbullying? For one, we can choose to be “invisible (隐形的)”—that is, to surf the internet without making any profiles (个人资料) or leaving any comments(评论). This, however, isn’t a real solution, as it forces us to give up our right to “exist (存在)” online.
We can also choose to simply take no notice of bullies. However, this isn’t perfect either, as it can be hard to forget people who are especially cruel (残酷的).
A better solution could be to block and report. If you block someone on social media, they won’t be able to see or comment on your posts. Most websites have rules against harmful language if you report a bully’s profile to the website, they will often stop that person from using the website. Sometimes direct action like this is the best action to take.
37.What is Polite Type?
A.A Finnish software company.
B.A kind of cyberbullying.
C.A new font that can rewrite hurtful words.
D.An organization that deals with bullies.
38.What does Haring mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Bullies usually don’t have a good education.
B.Bullies often use polite words to chat online.
C.Bullies should rethink what they are doing.
D.Bullies should express their opinions clearly.
39.What are the last three paragraphs about?
A.How cyberbullying affects our life.
B.What we can do to deal with cyberbullying.
C.How Polite Type can protect us from bullying.
D.What rules websites should make to stop bullies.
40.What is the author’s opinion on cyberbullying?
A.It is a new problem.
B.It happens to everyone at least once.
C.There is no effective solution for it.
D.Taking direct action against it is best.
