or apple blossoms (花).
He could catch butterflies and show them to his brother. He could pick apple blossoms and

The River Nile is the longest river in the world. It is about
6.670 kilometres in length. It covers about 3.4 million sauare
kilometrcs, which is about 1o% of the area of Africa.
The main source (头-) of the River Nile is the White Nile
in the small country called Burundi. In Sudan, the White Nile is
joincd by the Blue Nile, which flows from Ethiopia. From this
point on, the river is called the River Nile. In Egypt, the Rivcr Nile
runs across its flat land to Cairo, wherc it forms a very large dclta
(三伯洲). It thcn goes into the Mediterrancan Sea
ln the past, summer rains and melting snows made the River Nile flood its banks every
autumn. These floods left bchind water and rich mud, lctting farmers grow crops along the
rivcrbanks, in the delta, and to the south of it. By building a numbcr of dams, the Egyptian
control the flow of water in the River Nile. The biggest dam is the Aswan High Dam. It holds
Oloodwater back in Lake Nasser. Thc pcople who live along the Rivcr Nile no longcr have to
deal with the yearly flooding of their homes and land. Small canals (运河) have been built tc
carry watcr to the ficlds and villages. Water rushing over the dam wall is also used to produce
clectricity.
Whcn Lake Nasscr gets hot. lots of its watcr changes into water vapour. The fertile (e沃
的) mud that would spread ovcr the ficlds while flooding now gocs down to the bottom of the
lake. Without this mud. farmers in the River Nile valley now have to use chemical fertiliser
(化巴) on their crops. Moreover, the soils in the delta are becoming saltier because there is less
freshwater flowing down the Rivcr Nile and more saltwater from the Mediterranean Sca cnn
flow into thc delta.
Most towns and cities in Egypt and Sudan are near the River Nile, For locals, the river is
important for moving goods and people, especially in the flood season when road transport is
difficult. Ships can travel along most of the River Nile in Egypt and Sudan, except when the
watcr is vcry low
